I'm really trying to take up golf as a regular hobby.

I've played 2 rounds of 9 holes ( starting at the cheap, 9 hole golf course.) The first time my back was sore for a week, probably because my messed up swing.

Next time I took a friend who knows a tiny bit about golf. I worked on things like keeping my head down. And he had me pause for a brief second at the top of my swing, as I was getting a better stroke like that. He described my swing as my body loading up and trying to unleash on the ball. probably not a good thing. lol.

What tips would you give a newbie?

My putting is just horrific... I cannot use a wood unless I'm hitting of a tee. not sure why. I've been to the driving range a bunch and played ona golf simulator a handful of times, but otherwise completely a beginner.

I am sure I could use better equipment as right now I am just using a set I bought at target in College when I thought about getting into it. I finally bought some golf shoes.

I am absolutely planning on it... just trying to get a feel for the game first... like I didn't know I struggled to hit woods without a tee until I played. Hopefully by the end of the month Ill go sign up for lessons.

Practice, Practice, Practice! go hit at the driving range
"find your swing" I never knew what that phrase meant until I started hitting the ball right (most of the time). Golf is not something you can learn over night. Hitting the ball right requires a lot of practice, its all about muscle memory, patience. There is no one to play defense or stop you. Just you and the ball.

Imo

When you go to the range start with your PW then 9 and maybe move to your 8 iron. Until you start hitting the ball well....
If your putting sucks....spend a lot of time with 3 balls, and only putt 3ft's and move back a foot at a time.......if you don't make all 3 move back up a foot.......
This is a good drill for people new to golf

One thing that helped my putting was trying to visualize a circle around the hole roughly the size of a five gallon bucket. Instead of trying to hole the putt from meduim to long distances, I would just try to putt the ball into the "Bucket". With some practice you find yourself getting the ball close to the actual hole not running it by by 10 feet which will save you three putts down the road.

A few lessons go a long way. Maybe even try a few youtube instructional videos.

buy the best clubs there are, the newest and the best. Also spend as much $ on shirts and shoes and pants as possible. smoke long cigars. Put your phone on vibrate, every few holes take it out of your pocket and pretend to answer it. Walk off to the side of the tee box and pretend to talk with someone. Say stuff like "I don't care what their lawyer says, tell Johnson to stick it in his ass, if he won't deliver the product, we will give the account to Windsor" Say that just loud enough others can hear you.

Walk with a slight limp, and blame poor shots on a recent injury you got while working on your sail boats rigging.

Most of all, enjoy your self. You will meet some great folks on the golf course. Real down to earth folks.

- head down
- down ever try to "kill it". I can hit the ball farther than most players with a 3/4 swing than they can with a full. (and I'm only 5-10, 180)
- At the range, start with the short irons and work your way up to the long irons and woods.
- At the range, practice holding your finish and making what you think is a swing that would look good to someone watching. Dont hit any ball while doing this. I have taken lessons and have given lessons and this works. What it does is starts your muscle memory for your finishing balance. Without getting to into it...it the way you will start hitting your woods well
- practice, practice, practice... In the back yard on your short game, putting on carpet (even hardwood or lanomium, some greens feel that fast)

The key to putting is three fold.

#1 always hit the ball hard enough to get to the hole. Short putts never go in.

#2 obvioulsy you can make anything inside of 5 1/2 feet, so just pick it up. It speeds up the game.

#3 get one of them saber tooth putters, where you can scoup the ball up off the ground and flip it in the air and catch it. That looks cool as hell.

On a side note, when in doubt if you should putt or chip, always putt. A miss hit putt will end up much closer to the hold than a miss hit chip. I have been known to pull out my putter any where inside of 40 yards.

I overheard a teaching pro on the driving range today telling his student to take it back slow, and then make sure you accerlate the entire way through the swing. Never let up! He also said on windy days like we had today, if you are pressed for time, bring some range balls with you and work on your short game instead of going to the driving range. He really emphasized this. The short game isn't nearly as fun as trying to hit the ball 300 yards out on the range. But it is the chips and putts that are ultimately going to affect your score the most.

practice short game as much as possible - your handicap will decrease very quickly by improving your play around the greens

striking irons - hit down on the ball, dont try to scoop it clean

trust your swing - when you hit the course, dont try to think too much during your swing, that is for the range. On the course is all about muscle memory

club up - beginners love to see how far they can hit a pitching wedge. Instead club up and dont swing so hard. If you max out a PW at 145, and the pin is 145 away , hit a smooth 9

If you're going to get serious about playing, do yourself a favor--take some lessons--ask around to find a pro that is well liked, and do what he tells you..Make sure you practice between lessons..it will be addicting as hell when you start to get better and see some progress, but definitely get schooled in the fundamentals...have fun!! on a side note, my ex-wife accused me of loving golf more than I loved her--I told her I loved her more than soccer..Needless to say, that didn't go over so well
