Diamondbacks Begin Week At LA Dodgers

Bettors may soon start to identify the acronym TGIF as standing for Thank God It's Free cash day at MLB betting windows. Friday's results saw a season-long trend continue that's getting difficult to ignore, even if it is without rhyme or reason.

Eleven of the 15 games on the May 11 slate went 'over' the total, marking the fifth time in six Fridays that high-side wagers have won out. For the season, the 'over' now stands 49-30-4 on the final day of the conventional workweek, while the 'under' is 209-178-15 the other six days.

Again, there isn't a logical explanation other than maybe it's tied to this 2012 Mayan calendar stuff. We'll keep an eye on the strange little phenomenon as the season progresses, but in the meantime, here's a look at a Sunday contest to wrap up Week 6 and another to begin Week 7.

Hamilton Continues Tear As Halos, Rangers Wrap Up Series
The price of Josh Hamilton's next contract continues to go up as the Texas Rangers slugger maintains his assault on American League pitchers. Hamilton popped two more homers in Friday's 10-3 Texas win over the Los Angeles Angels, giving him eight long balls this week and an MLB-best 17 for the season.

Game 2 of the series includes a strange twist as CJ Wilson, whose Friday outing was cut very short by a rain delay, will start again Saturday for LA. Texas counters with Matt Harrison, and the Rangers are priced around $1.60 for the matchup that is carrying a 9½-run total on the Don Best odds screen.

The series finale will be the weekly ESPN Sunday Night Baseball broadcast (8:00 p.m. ET), and pits Jered Weaver on the hill for the Angels against Texas' Neftali Feliz.

It will be Feliz' first career assignment vs. the Halos after spending the past three seasons in the Rangers bullpen. It's also just his second start this year at home, the other coming more than a month ago when he tossed seven scoreless frames vs. Seattle in his season debut. Feliz is coming off an excellent performance Tuesday in Baltimore where he worked six innings, allowed just one run and four hits, and struck out a career-high eight batters.

Weaver brings a perfect 5-0 record (Angels 5-2) into Sunday's clash to go with his 1.60 ERA, second in the AL. He has won two straight starts while allowing just a single run over the last three, a span that includes his May 2 no-hitter vs. Minnesota. He has seen the Rangers plenty during his career, and has struggled at their ballpark in Arlington. The Halos have won just two of his last nine starts in Texas while Weaver's ERA is a lofty 5.74 in the hitter-friendly confines.

D-Backs & Dodgers Begin Series In LA
We've reached that quirky part of the MLB schedule when teams play a pair of short 2-game series before heading into next weekend's round of interleague play. One of those 2-game quickies gets underway Monday in Los Angeles where the Dodgers host the Arizona Diamondbacks with a 10:10 p.m. (ET) first pitch.

The starting pitching matchup for Game 1 lends promise for a low-scoring affair as Ian Kennedy gets the call for Arizona opposite LA's Clayton Kershaw.

It's the first meeting of the season between the division rivals, and an important one for Arizona who snapped a 5-game skid Friday with a 5-1 home triumph over San Francisco. The Dodgers are all alone at the top of the NL West standings, and the D-Backs can ill-afford to drop both games at Chavez Ravine despite it still being early.

It is also an important start for Kennedy who is coming off a rough outing vs. St. Louis in general and Carlos Beltran specifically (7 IP, 6 ER, 2 Beltran HR). Arizona has now lost his last three trips to the mound, but perhaps a game away from Chase Field can help get Kennedy back on track. The California native owns a 5.40 ERA at home compared to a 1.86 mark on the road.

The good news for the D-Backs is they went a perfect 4-0 in Kennedy's matchups with the Dodgers a year ago, including a couple of dubyas in Los Angeles.

The bad news is Arizona will be going up against a tough customer in reigning NL Cy Young winner Kershaw. After winning the southpaw's first five starts of the season, LA has now dropped his last two assignments. Kershaw was 3-1 with a 1.42 ERA when facing the Diamondbacks in 2011, and the Dodgers have won 16 of his last 20 starts at home (1.85 ERA in those games )

Sunday’s betting tips: Pettitte favored in MLB return

Who’s hot

NBA: The over is 4-1 in Clippers last five road games.

NBA: The Heat are 5-1 ATS in their last six games as a favorite.

MLB: Cincinnati is 6-2 in Bronson Arroyo's last eight starts.

Who’s not

NBA: Grizzlies are 3-10-2 ATS in their last 15 games overall.

NBA: The under is 2-6 in the Pacers' last eight road games.

NBA: Minnesota has won just 14 of its last 57 games overall.

Key stat

0 – The Los Angeles Kings didn’t allow a single power play goal in their four-game sweep of St. Louis. The Kings shut down all 17 power plays they faced and lead the league killing 92.1 percent of their penalties in the playoffs.

Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Yoenis Cespedes, Oakland Athletics - The Oakland A's placed rookie outfielder Yoenis Cespedes on the 15-day disabled list Saturday with a strained muscle in his left hand. Cespedes is hitting .245 with five home runs and 21 RBI.

Game of the day

Los Angeles Clippers at Memphis Grizzlies (-8, 178)

Notable quotable

"Come on, man, there's still a lot of games left. You're trying to create or write something negative like everybody else has already. It's just one game. We just need to come back tomorrow and put ourselves in a situation to try and win the series on Sunday." – Los Angeles Angels slugger Albert Pujols, is hitting just .192, after the Angels were pounded 10-3 by Texas Friday. The Angels were tied for last place in the AL West heading into Saturday’s action.

Notes and tips

Andy Pettitte makes his first MLB start since 2010 Sunday against the Seattle Mariners. Oddsmakers have Pettitte and the Yankees set as -140 favorites. The veteran lefty was 0-2 with a 3.71 ERA in four minor league starts and is expected to be on a 100-pitch count Sunday.

The Angels have traded away two major league catchers in the last two years -- Mike Napoli and Jeff Mathis. They'd take either one of them back right now. Chris Iannetta underwent a 40-minute procedure to remove the pisiform bone in his right wrist Friday. The small bone was fractured on May 2 when Iannetta was hit by a pitch. The projected recovery time is six to eight weeks. Iannetta was acquired in a trade with the Rockies last winter to be their primary catcher and inject some offense into the position. With him out, the Angels will turn to Bobby Wilson and John Hester, neither of whom has ever been a front-line catcher in the majors.

Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver DeSean Jackson is urging teammate, running back LeSean McCoy, to not hold out of training camp this summer. McCoy is entering the final year of his contract, much like Jackson last year when he held out following the lockout. Jackson was heavily criticized for the approach he took and he does not want the same thing to happen to McCoy. Both players are represented by agent Drew Rosenhaus. "I think it would be in his best interest to come" to offseason practices and camp, Jackson told the Philadelphia Inquirer on Friday. "Looking back now it really hurt me more than I thought it helped me. Hopefully he saw everything I went through, and hopefully Drew won't have him go through the same thing."

The Chicago Cubs placed right-handed reliever Carlos Marmol on the 15-day disabled list with a right hamstring strain, the club announced Saturday. In his place, the Cubs brought up right-hander Casey Coleman from Class AAA Iowa. Marmol, who recently lost his job as the team's closer, is 0-1 with a 6.35 ERA and two saves in 15 appearances this season. Coleman is 2-3 with a 3.48 ERA in seven games (six starts) for Iowa this year.

Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

Odds to win next spring's college basketball national championship.......

7-1-- Indiana Hoosiers-- Zeller returning was vital for this.

8-1-- Louisville Cardinals-- Very deep roster.

12-1-- Kentucky Wildcats-- Defending champs have talented newcomers.

15-1-- Kansas Jayhawks-- New conference rivals: West Virginia/TCU.

15-1-- Syracuse Orangemen-- Do they give Bernie Fine his job back?

15-1-- Ohio State Buckeyes-- Looking back, wish Oden had stayed longer in Columbus; leaving early crippled his NBA career.

15-1-- Michigan State Spartans-- Need their guys to stay healthier.

*****************

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday.........

13) To me, best-of-7 series aren't conducive to basketball; you just don't need seven games, best-of-3 would be excellent. March Madness is thrilling because its single elimination and the best team doesn't always win. In the NBA, except for injury-riddled teams, the best team most always wins.

12) Eric Karros had a great tidbit on the FOX baseball game Saturday; when Josh Hamilton had 18 total bases in his 4-HR game earlier this week, Adrian Beltre was hitting behind him in the lineup.

Shawn Green holds the big league record with 19 total bases; that night, in 2002, the batter hitting in front of Green? Adrian Beltre.

11) Group of guys in sportsbook were fired up tonight, rooting for Andre Iguodala to score more than 17.5 points (he scored 19) and for both teams to combine for 10 made 3-pointers (they made 7). Lot of interesting prop bets they come up with, to keep the action lively throughout the game.

10) This trade happened in the NBA this season..........

Washington Wizards:
Traded: Javale McGee, Ronny Turiaf, Nick Young
Received: Nene Hilario, Brian Cook and a 2nd-round pick.

Denver Nuggets:
Traded: Nene Hilario
Received: Javale McGee, Ronny Turiaf

Los Angeles Clippers:
Traded: Brian Cook and a 2nd-round pick
Received: Nick Young

Anyone wonder why the Wizards always lose? Who gets rid of a freakish athlete like McGee?, and Young is helping the Clippers too. Cook played 9.7 mpg for the Wizards; he is 31. Hilario is pretty good, but he is 29. Look at the way McGee runs and jumps-- he's a unique talent!!!!! Yikes.

9) Texas Rangers haven't had a player on the DL yet this season.

8) Interesting decision by the Angels, starting CJ Wilson two days in a row, after he threw 22 pitches in a rain-delayed game Friday night. Angels won the Saturday game, will be interesting to chart Wilson moving forward.

7) Last week, one of our trivia answers identified Kyle Drabek as the only pitcher in the big leagues with a single digit uniform number. Since then, the Rockies called up Alex White, who wears number 6, so now there are two.

6) Very quietly, Carlos Zambrano has been excellent for the Marlins; in his last two starts, he's thrown 16 scoreless innings.

5) Two of the big news stories on the Las Vegas local TV tonight were the graduation at UNLV, and the Runnin' Rebels signing Anthony Bennett, who one station touted as UNLV's best recruit since Larry Johnson. Wow.

4) No Stanley Cup champion has gone seven games in its first two playoff series, the way the Rangers have this spring. New York advances with a 8-6 playoff record. Washington goes home at 7-7.

3) Some influential Florida State people are pushing the school to look at a move to the Big X, which is called the Big XII but only has ten teams right now, with TCU/West Virginia joining this year, and A&M/Mizzou going. Being in the ACC does very little for the Seminoles' football program.

2) Roy Halladay has no wins in his last five starts. Very unusual.

1) Happy Mother's Day to all you moms out there, if any of you readers are actually moms. I'll think of you while I'm sitting by the pool today.

Public opinion: Sunday's biggest consensus bets

Check out Sunday’s biggest consensus plays in the NHL, NBA and MLB.

NBA

Los Angeles Clippers at Memphis Grizzlies (-8, 178)

The Memphis Grizzlies barely edged the Los Angeles Clippers for the No. 4 seed and home-court advantage, putting them in position to host Sunday’s winner-take-all Game 7. The Grizzlies have clawed back from a 3-1 series deficit with two straight victories, including Friday's night's 90-88 win in Los Angeles over the hobbled Clippers. Memphis has won two of three at home in the series, but blew a 27-point lead in Game 1 and frittered away most of a 24-point edge in Game 5.

Consensus: Los Angeles (75 percent)/Memphis (25 percent)

NHL

Los Angeles Kings at Phoenix Coyotes (+101, 4.5)

Goaltending will be the focus as the Los Angeles Kings visit the Phoenix Coyotes in Game 1 of the Western Conference finals Saturday night. Kings netminder Jonathan Quick is enjoying the best season in franchise history, nominated for the Vezina Trophy following a dominant regular season and boasting similarly stingy numbers so far in the playoffs. Phoenix has its own star goalie in Mike Smith, the only player in the postseason with two shutouts on his resume.

Consensus: Los Angeles (60 percent)/Phoenix (40 percent)

MLB

San Diego Padres at Philadelphia Phillies (-200, 7.5)

Despite persistent trade rumors surrounding Philadelphia starter Cole Hamels, the betting public is all over him even with the hefty price tag. He missed his last start after being suspended for intentionally hitting rookie Bryce Harper with a pitch. Hamels allowed just one run in eight innings during that win while striking out eight. The Phillies are just 6-8 at home this season.

Consensus: Philadelphia (74 percent)/San Diego (26 percent)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sunday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Streaking

Jered Weaver, Los Angeles Angels (5-0, 1.60 ERA)

Weaver wasn’t nearly as dominant in his first start after his no-hitter, but didn’t give his supporters anything to complain about either. He allowed one run on three hits in six innings in an 8-3 win over Minnesota. He walked two and struck out a pair and has allowed only nine runs in 50 2/3 innings this season.

Lance Lynn, St. Louis Cardinals (6-0, 1.40 ERA)

Lynn continued his remarkable rookie season, throwing five scoreless innings in what turned out to be a 9-6 victory over Arizona. He allowed three hits while striking out seven and is now working on a tidy 0.85 WHIP so far this year.

Slumping

Kevin Millwood, Seattle Mariners (0-4, 5.88 ERA)

Millwood had trouble with his control in his last trip to the hill, walking five batters in just five innings. He also gave up five runs on eight hits in a 6-4 loss to Detroit. The 37-year-old has lost four straight decisions, yielding 15 runs over that span.

Philip Humber, Chicago White Sox (1-2, 6.83 ERA)

Humber’s perfect game seems like a very long time ago. Since then, he has allowed 20 earned runs, including five home runs, in 13 1/3 innings. He didn’t make it out of the third inning in his last start, giving up eight runs in an 8-6 loss to Cleveland. "I'm doing my best, it's just the last two or three times out there, it's been rough,” he told reporters. “I'm definitely hoping for better results. I'm doing the best I can to make that happen, but right now it's kind of a grind."

Sunday Night Baseball: Angels at Rangers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Angels at Texas Rangers (-130, N/A)

Two of baseball's best at their craft square off Sunday night when the Texas Rangers host the Los Angeles Angels in the rubber game of their three-game series. Texas slugger Josh Hamilton attempts to continue his power display against Los Angeles ace Jered Weaver, who has yet to lose this season. Hamilton leads the major leagues in batting average (.402), home runs (18) and RBIs (41). He has gone deep nine times over his last six games and has more blasts than the entire San Diego Padres club (13). Weaver is tied for first in the American League in wins (five), ranks second in ERA (1.60) and is fifth with 47 strikeouts.

Hamilton is 9-for-34 (.265) lifetime against Weaver with five doubles, a homer and three RBIs. Weaver has registered five strikeouts in the head-to-head battle. The Angels have won eight of their last 12 games while the Rangers have captured four of six. Texas has claimed 13 of the last 21 meetings between the AL West rivals.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Angels RH Jered Weaver (5-0, 1.60 ERA) vs. Rangers RH Neftali Feliz (2-1, 3.38 ERA)

Weaver is coming off back-to-back victories over Minnesota in which he allowed a total of one run and three hits over 15 innings. After tossing a no-hitter against the Twins at home on May 2, the 29-year-old tossed six strong innings at Target Field five days later for his first road win of the year. Weaver owns a 9-6 record with a 3.41 ERA and two complete games in 25 career starts against Texas.

Feliz will be making the sixth start of his career, all this season. The former closer allowed more than three runs just once over his first five outings. In his only start at home, Feliz tossed seven scoreless innings in a win over Seattle in his season debut. The 24-year-old limited the Orioles to one run and four hits over six frames in a win at Camden Yards on Tuesday.

WALK-OFFS

1. Angels slugger Albert Pujols went 1-for-3 on Saturday to raise his average to .195.
2. Hamilton is the second player in history to hit 18 homers in the first 34 games of a season. Cy Williams accomplished the feat in 1923.
3. Hamilton's blast on Saturday extended his hitting streak to 12 games. But teammate Elvis Andrus went 0-for-3, ending his streak at 11 contests.
