Red Sox & Phillies Continue Set In Philly

Come October, will we look back to this matchup of current division cellar dwellers as a World Series preview? Probably not, but you could definitely name a slew of more unlikely Fall Classic battles at this point.

The Boston Red Sox and Philadelphia Phillies continue their almost-annual meeting Saturday with a 7:15 p.m. (ET) first pitch at Citizens Bank Park. Game 2 of the series will find Jon Lester on the mound for the visitors against Joe Blanton. Boston opened as slight favorites (-115) with the total 7½ and priced -130 to the 'over.'

Philly and Beantown have met eight of the last nine seasons – and 16 total series – in a sort of an arranged marriage as 'interleague rivals.' The Red Sox had the 27-19 overall edge before Friday's contest that listed Cole Hamels and the Phils as 145 favorites with a 7-run total. This is the fifth series in the last six to be played in Philadelphia where the Sox are 14-12.

Lester's scorecard is a mess this season, a couple of bad outings that Boston split along with two decent efforts that the Red Sox dropped. One might think that a 3.71 ERA for a team that scores 5.41 RPG (3rd-most) would be a real good thing, but Boston is just 3-5 in Lester's starts. He looked real good in his last assignment vs. Seattle, but that was the Mariners and not a more potent attack even if the Phils are a wounded bunch.

All told, Boston is 12-5 in Lester's regular season starts vs. NL clubs, and a perfect 3-0 when he faces the Phils. All three of those games were played in the City of Brotherly Love where Lester has tossed 21 innings and allowed just a single earned run.

Philadelphia clawed back over .500 with a Thursday's win and begins this series on a 5-game streak. Granted, the last two were against the lowly Chicago Cubs, but the offense did awaken for 17 runs in those two tilts.

Blanton has been as steady as Charlie Manuel might have hoped, and with Vance Worley now nursing a sore wing, Blanton becomes even more crucial to Philadelphia's hopes for 2012. Say all you want about the impact Ryan Howard and Chase Utley can have once they're healthy, but the Phillies' rotation is going to carry them into the postseason more than any other facet.

Philadelphia picked up wins in three of Blanton's last four assignments, but has dropped both of his assignments vs. Boston since joining the club, one a decent outing at Citizens Bank Park and the other a disaster at Fenway.

Haren, Halos Try Luck At Petco Park
They've met 22 times before in interleague play, but this weekend is the first time for the Los Angeles Angels and San Diego Padres to battle at Petco Park. The all-time series was split 11-11 with each club 7-7 in Anaheim and 4-4 in San Diego entering Friday's contest that had the Angels priced at -170 behind Jered Weaver. The Pads were countering with Jeff Suppan in that contest which was still pending.

Mike Scioscia's club will once again be road chalk Saturday night when the Halos send Dan Haren to the hill as a $1.40 favorite with a 6½-run total. Tim Stauffer was slated for San Diego in the 10:05 p.m. (ET) first pitch.

Haren drags a string of three losses into this match, and the Angels have won just one of his eight assignments so far. He's been the victim of his own pitching and a dormant LA attack. The Halos haven't scored a run in Haren's current 3-game skid, and just 19 total in the eight games with nine of those coming in an April defeat at Minnesota.

Though Petco might be a new experience for a lot of Angels, Haren is familiar with the stadium from his time spent in the Arizona rotation. The Diamondbacks split his six starts here (3.82 ERA), and the Halos were 2-1 in Haren's three interleague outings a year ago (4.67 ERA).

Stauffer is taking the mound for just the second time in 2012 after beginning the season on the DL with a sprained right elbow. He tossed five frames and allowed four runs (three earned) Monday at Washington, a game in which the Pads eventually dropped by an 8-5 count. Stauffer has never faced the Angels, and San Diego dropped two of his three interleague starts last season despite his 2.25 ERA over 20 innings of work.

Albert Pujols is the only batter in LA's lineup that has much experience either at Petco Park or against Stauffer. Pujols owns a .258 career average at the stadium (97 AB) with seven homers, and is 2-for-13 lifetime vs. Stauffer without a long ball

Interleague Action

May 18, 2012

This weekend marks the start of the first round of MLB Interleague Play for the 2012 regular season, continuing a tradition that began in 1997. The schedule includes a total of 252 games with 14 three-game series set to start this Friday and an extended round of Interleague Play that will run from June 8 to June 24.

The following is a look at some overall pertinent facts and figures as well as a closer look at some of the most intriguing matchups to get you ready for all the action.

MLB Interleague Overview - Results

This will be the 16th season that Major League Baseball has scheduled games between the National and American League which has come to be known as Interleague Play. The popularity among baseball fans continues to remain strong. In 2011, the average Interleague game drew over 12 percent more fans to the ball parks than the average attendance figures for traditional intraleague games.

Over the years, certain teams have made the most of the opportunity to square-off against ball clubs from the other league. The New York Yankees have the best overall record in Interleague Play at 157-107. The next best team has been the Chicago White Sox with an overall record of 153-111. As a whole, the AL has gotten the best of it with a 52.3 winning percentage.

The Miami Marlins have the best record in the National League at 135-117 but there are only four other NL teams with an overall winning record. The Pittsburgh Pirates have the dubious distinction of having the worst Interleague record in the majors at 81-130.

2011 Interleague Results

The AL won the 2011 series with a record of 131-121 marking the eighth consecutive season that they posted a better record than their NL counterparts. The Yankees along with the Los Angeles Angels had the best record in the American League at 13-5, while the Kansas Royals had the worst at 5-13. Six of the 14 teams in the AL ended Interleague play with a winning record.

The teams with the best Interleague record in the NL were the Atlanta Braves and San Francisco Giants at 10-5. The team with the worst record was the Houston Astros at 4-11. Overall, there were nine NL teams that ended up above .500 in Interleague action for the year.

May 18 to May 20 Schedule

The battle for bragging rights in “The Windy City” official kicks off this weekend’s Interleague action with the White Sox and Cubs squaring-off this Friday afternoon at Wrigley Field in a 2:20 p.m. (ET) start.

The rest of the matchups are as follows:

Baltimore Orioles vs. Washington Nationals
Boston Red Sox vs. Philadelphia Phillies
Cincinnati Reds vs. New York Yankees
Miami Marlins vs. Cleveland Indians
Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Detroit Tigers
New York Mets vs. Toronto Blue Jays
Atlanta Braves vs. Tampa Bay Rays
Texas Rangers vs. Houston Astros
Arizona Diamondbacks vs. Kansas City Royals
Minnesota Twins vs. Milwaukee Brewers
Seattle Mariners vs. Colorado Rockies
Los Angeles Angels vs. San Diego Padres
Oakland Athletics vs. San Francisco Giants

St. Louis Cardinals vs. Los Angeles Dodgers (NL Matchup)

Series in the Spotlight

While all 14 of this weekend’s Interleague series offer some interesting matchups both on the mound and in the field, there are a couple that have the potential to be the most entertaining given the natural geographic rivalry they create.

Crosstown Classic - White Sox vs. Cubs

Team Overviews

The White Sox come into this weekend’s series with an overall record of 18-21 which has the team 4.5 games in back of Cleveland in the AL Central. They are 2-4 in their last six games but coming off a 6-1 victory over the Angels as road underdogs (+141) to raise their record on the road to 11-9. Chicago is currently ranked 10th in the AL in hitting with a .248 team batting average and ranked ninth in scoring with 158 runs. The pitching staff is ranked seventh in the AL with a team ERA of 3.89.

The Cubs bring a three-game losing streak into Friday’s contest. They are also bringing up the rear in the NL Central with an overall record of 15-23 and are seven games out of first. Their back-to-back losses to Philadelphia at home have dropped the Cubs to 9-12 at Wrigley this season. This Chicago team is ranked 10th in the NL in hitting with a team batting average of .245 and averaging 3.76 runs per game, which is ranked 12th. The Cubs have a team ERA of 4.10, which is also ranked 12th in the NL.

Top Matchup on the Mound

Jake Peavy vs. Paul Maholm

Peavy is set to get the start in Sunday’s series finale. The right-hander is 4-1 on the year with a 2.65 ERA, but coming off a rough outing against Detroit this past Tuesday. He allowed six earned runs on nine hits including two home runs to end his streak of eight consecutive quality starts dating back to the end of last season.

Maholm will be making his eighth start of the season. He comes in with a 4-2 record and 4.35 ERA. The left-hander gave-up four earned runs on seven hits in six innings of work this past Wednesday against St. Louis. Maholm had only yielded a total of three earned runs in his four previous outings.

Betting Trends

The White Sox are 20-6 in their last 26 Interleague games on the road and 42-16 in their last 58 Interleague games overall. The total has stayed ‘under’ in 10 of their last 12 Interleague road games.

The Cubs are 1-4 in their last five games against the AL Central and 1-4 in their last five Interleague home games. The total has stayed ‘under’ in five of the Cubs last six Interleague games at home.

Head-to-head, the White Sox are 4-1 in the last five meetings and 5-2 in their last seven trips to Wrigley Field. The total has stayed ‘under’ in the last five meetings.

Best of the Rest

Beltway Series - Orioles vs. Nationals

What makes this series so intriguing is that both teams are off to strong starts and are at or near the top of their respective divisions. The Orioles are 25-14 with a one game lead over Tampa Bay in the AL East and the Nationals are 23-15 and a half game in back of Atlanta in the NL East.

The key pitching duel in this series pits Baltimore’s rookie phenom Wei-Yin Chen against Nationals’ ace Stephen Strasburg in Sunday’s series finale. Chen is off to a perfect 4-0 start with a 2.45 ERA in his first seven MLB outings. The left-hander has yet to give-up more than three earned runs in any game this season.

Strasburg has shown no ill effects in his first full season back from Tommy John surgery. The right-hander is 3-1 with an ERA of 2.25 and a 1.02 WHIP. He gave-up four earned runs in his last outing after giving-up a total of seven in his first seven starts.

The Orioles are 6-4 in the last 10 meetings but just 1-4 in their last five games in Washington. The total has gone ‘over’ in four of the last six games between the two

Saturday’s betting tips: Bayern owns huge advantage at home

Weather to watch

Oakland Athletics at San Francisco Giants – 11 mph winds are expected to blow out to right-centerfield.

Who’s hot

-The Spurs are 7-1-2 ATS in their last 10 games as a road favorite.
-Rangers are 10-3 in their last 13 games playing on two days rest.
-The White Sox are 20-6 in their last 26 interleague road games.

Who’s not

-The Clippers are 2-6-2 ATS in their last 10 games as an underdog.
-The under is 1-4-1 in the Devils' last six home games.
-The Tigers were 3-8 in their last 11 home games heading into Friday's action.

Key stat

1 – Bayern Munich lost just one game on its home pitch, the Allianz, in Bundesliga play this season, going 14-1-2. They conceded just six goals in those home games while scoring 49 themselves.

Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Blake Griffin, Los Angeles Clippers – Griffin’s injury list continues to grow. It was well known that he has been playing through ankle and knee injuries, but he was also diagnosed with a hip pointer after Game 2’s loss to San Antonio. Griffin still hit seven of his 16 shots from the floor in that defeat, scoring 20 points.

Game of the day

Chelsea (+300) at Bayern Munich (-125) – Draw (+250)

Notable quotable

"We definitely feel that we can win this series. In any playoff series, momentum shifts dramatically every single game. I've seen it coming from the first day of training camp. This is who we've been all year. We're a balanced team . . . not two guys trying to create all the time." Pacers coach Frank Vogel after blowing out the Miami Heat Thursday to take a 2-1 series lead. The Pacers moved to +105 underdogs to beat the Heat (-125) in the series.

Notes and tips

The New Jersey Devils website is doing its part to ensure the club has a solid home-ice advantage against the New York Rangers Saturday afternoon. The Devils’ official website has urged New Jersey ticketholders to only sell tickets to Devils fans, as Rangers supporters continue to try to get a strong support group for their club across the Hudson River. The Devils organization is dubbing it as the “No Blue” campaign. With the series tied at one game apiece, New Jersey is set as a -130 favorite in Game 3.

The Arizona Cardinals aren't handing anything to quarterback Kevin Kolb entering training camp. Coach Ken Whisenhunt plans to determine Arizona's starting quarterback this summer in a competition between Kolb and John Skelton that could stretch into preseason games. Kolb entered the 2011 season as the undisputed starter but the 27-year-old missed seven games due to concussion-like symptoms. He had just over five weeks to pick up the offense, with no benefit of offseason workouts and minimal playbook knowledge, before starting his first game in September. Skelton, more than three years younger than Kolb, lacks mobility and didn't protect the ball well in seven starts in 2011. He was intercepted 14 times and sacked 23 times in 151 attempts last season.

The Miami Heat cancelled their practice Friday, a day after it lost in a blowout to the Indiana Pacers in the Eastern Conference semifinal series. The Heat, who fell to 2-1 in the series after losing 94-75 on the road Thursday, also cancelled media availability of players. The Indiana Pacers also cancelled their Friday practice. The series resumes Sunday with Game 4 in Indianapolis.

With Adam Lind banished to the minors, Vladimir Guerrero could return to the majors sooner than expected. Guerrero, recently signed by the Toronto Blue Jays to a minor-league contract, has impressed during workouts at the Blue Jays' spring training site in Dunedin, Fla. The 37-year-old former Montreal Expos star was scheduled to see some game action at extended spring training next week. Now the first appearance is supposed to come Friday. Then who knows? Asked how the time frame for Guerrero's possible return to the majors has been affected by Thursday's events, manager John Farrell said: "Quickly shortened up."

Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

-- Lakers went 41-42 from foul line, beat Oklahoma City by 3, as home team is now 3-0 in series. Game 4 in Saturday night at Staples.

-- 76ers rallied back from 18 down in second half, beat Celtics by 9, tying their series 2-2, as series shifts to Boston.

-- Marlins are getting a lot out of Carlos Zambrano; he gave up two runs in seven IP, as Miami won again, this time in Cleveland.

-- They had 34,715 in Houston for Rangers-Astros, good sign for when Astros move to the AL and Texas is a division rival.

-- Very touching scene at Wrigley, with Kerry Wood striking out only guy he faced, in his last big league appearance. His little son ran on the field and hugged him as he walked to the dugout. Good stuff.

-- AL teams were 9-5 on first night of interleague play. Over was 7-7, 3-3 in games with a DH, 4-4 in games with no DH.

Public opinion: Saturday’s best consensus plays

NBA:

San Antonio Spurs at Los Angeles Clippers (5, 192)

The Clippers are just 1-3-1 against the spread in their last five and the team is going to need Chris Paul to step up in a hurry. With the Spurs blanketing him on every possession, He has 13 turnovers in the series and is shooting just 31 percent from the floor.

Consensus: Spurs 60 percent/Clippers 40 percent

NHL:

New York Rangers at New Jersey Devils (-120, 4.5)

The Devils thoroughly outplayed the Rangers in Game 2 and now head home looking to take a lead in the series. They opened as high as -135 at some online shops but can now be found as low as -115. The Devils have won four straight home games and are riding a 37-16 run in their last 53 as a home favorite.

Consensus: Rangers 52 percent/Devils 48 percent

MLB:

Texas Rangers at Houston Astros (+160, 9)

Houston starter Lucas Harrell has been a lot better at home than he has on the road, but he’s hardly an imposing figure on the mound against this offense. Harrell has 22 strikeouts and 18 walks in 45 innings this year and has won just once in his last seven starts, dating back to last season.

Consensus: Rangers 73 percent/Astros 27 percent

Saturday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Streaking

Joe Blanton, Philadelphia Phillies (4-3, 2.96 ERA)

Blanton has won three of his last four trips to the mound and is coming off a win over Houston that saw him go seven innings, allowing just a solo homer while striking out seven. He walked only one after issuing three free passes to first in his start before that. Control normally isn’t much of a problem for him, with only seven walks on his resume this season.

Clayton Kershaw, Los Angeles Dodgers (3-1, 2.22 ERA)

After giving up five earned runs and three homers in a loss at Colorado earlier this month, Kershaw seems to be back on track. He has allowed only nine hits and two earned runs in 15 innings of work since then, striking out 13 batters. The lefty fired seven shutout innings in a 3-1 win over Arizona earlier this week, but wasn’t pleased about allowing three walks.

Slumping

Dan Haren, Los Angeles Angels (1-4, 4.41 ERA)

Haren has lost three straight starts and is having some control problems. He walked four batters and gave up four runs in six innings during a 5-0 loss to the A’s in his last outing. His velocity has been down all season and he has allowed a homer in each of his last three starts. Haren ranks last in the bigs having lost 10.24 units for his supporters this season.

John Danks, Chicago White Sox (2-4, 6.46 ERA)

Danks’ tough season got even worse the last time he toed the rubber. He lasted a season-low three innings, yielding five runs on nine hits while walking three in
a no-decision against Detroit. The veteran has only two strikeouts in his last three starts and has 26 punch-outs compared to 22 walks in 47 1/3 innings this year
