Is this the biggest scam goin right now or what? I mean these people expect extra money on top of their wages just for bringing your food from the kitchen to your table.

Man, just give me a shout when it's ready and I will walk up and pick it up myself.

No, seriously though, they expect it and demand it. There are people that work hard labour jobs or pump gas in -30 degrees celsius weather that don't get tips and they work minimum wage. Why do waiters get special treatment.

I dated a waitress before and asked her this and she said because we have to ''tip out'' at the end of the day whether we got a tip or not'' I don't get that shit. That's between the restaurant and the workers. You accepted a job for a certain wage. That's what you should expect.

That girl I dated used to brag about how sorryass guys would come in there tipping her crazy amounts to impress her and she would laugh with her coworkers in the back about how she probably makes twice what that loser that tipped her makes.

I'm not saying I don't tip. I do. I eat out a lot especially at nice restaurants and I do tip well. Lately though, it's annoying me how it's just acceptable and the way to do things.

They complain how hard of a job it is but give me a break. They obviously don't know what hard work is. When I was a teen I worked in a lumber yard in the summers for minimum wage. Now that was hard work man.

Anyways, that's my rant. I want to know if anybody else feels that tipping waitresses/waiters is the biggest scam going right now.

Ive worked as a waiter. at the time, minimum wage was $4.25 an hour. legally the restaurant was able to pay us $2.12 an hour.the rest was tips. I worked very hard, had to deal with some energy sapping rude unbelievably nasty people. the tips are your pay. and you have to tip out food runners, bartenders and busboys.

if you think waiters have it good, explain to me how many you have met at country clubs or while yachting? you are very ignorant

I see what you're saying Smith, but again, there are people that work much harder that don't get tips. I'm sorry I still don't buy it. Hard work compared to what?

Why is it the customers problem how much you get paid?

I glady tip my gas jockey when it's freezing out and he pumps my gas or when there's a lineup but still he/she quickly does my windows. Carrying food from point a to point b and putting up with some rude customers isn't all that tough.

You chose your job knowing full well what the wage is. Why is it my job to supplement your income? I also blame the restaurant industry for not paying a proper wage which pressures the customer into tipping.

That ex I dated? She boasted that she made 500 a night on tips at times and that she didn't claim it on her taxes which I'm sure many waiters don't.

Hard work my ass. I'm not ignorant. I think it's a scam and people need to wake up to it.

I'm not saying it's a path to riches. I'm sure just as some waitresses make 500 a night in tips, others might make 30 a night or less and barely make ends meet. I'm just saying it's not the customer's problem. It's something the restaurant industry needs to change.

As for me not lasting 2 weeks, I'd be ok. I may be doing very well nowadays but back in the day I worked all types of jobs, really tough jobs so excuse me when I laugh when people say it's hard work being a waiter. I'm not blind, I see and hear about their job duties. There's way tougher jobs. People working hard labour for minimum wage would trade places with a waiter in a second.

waitresses do not make $500 a night in tips. you are utterly clueless. Many strippers in Vegas are struggling to make a couple hundred.

Canadians were tables to get thru. they tip poorly. American servers just are nice and expect 10% which as you are pointing out is even at that grudging from ill informed Canadians. Servers realize its out of ignorance, like yours. as far as the restaurant ought to pay better, they pay half of minimum wage. the rest is tips. get it? if they paid better you would be paying $5 more for your entree. Only very cheap people come up with the "The restaurant ought to pay better" argument while tipping poorly. These are mutually exclusive. you are awful. please stay in Canada for the forseeable future.

Yikes....Okay well I'd rather 3-5 dollars more than have a waiter give me attitude or possibly spit in my food because he or she felt I didn't tip well enough last time I was there.

Also, I hate to break it to you, I guess you haven't read my other posts in the past but I am going to be an American by the end of this summer.

Don't be nasty though. No need to get worked up. I get what you are saying. I'm appreciating your side of it. I'm reading it. I understand the points you are making.

Also, you are the clueless one if you think some really hot waitresses don't make crazy amounts in tips. This chic did. She wasn't bullshitting me.

many waitresses who are older than 25 are single moms who deal with the jerks day in and day out for half of minimum wage plus tips because they need to pay bills and don't have a college education to try and do something less awful. And waiting tables is awful. I worked with some of these ladies and they always have pics of their kid in their notebook where they take orders.

Once ate at a seafood restaurant with the ex girlfriend, and the bill looked odd, so when we questioned the waiter, he tried to explain the charges and then ended with "That doesn't include the tip".

What a cheapskate. Wait staff don't get paid shit for salary and live on tips. I'm not saying if they do a bad job they deserve tips but if they do a good job, flip them the standard 15-20%. They usually have to split the tips with other members of the staff as well so it's not like all those tips go directly in their pockets.

If you dont want to tip dont, but i wouldn't recommend going back again, or you are likely to be eating spit, or worse!

Jaguara,

a waiter is working for you, not the restaurant. It's up to you to pay them.

If you want the restaurant to pay them (more than the government forces them to pay), expect to see it reflected in your menu prices.

tipping is the ultimate in capitalism, a good waiter or waitress will (should) be rewarded with more pay in the form of higher tips. poor workers will make less, and should eliminate themselves from the industry. restaurants that serve poor food will not attract high level wait staffs, and we as consumers will be left with great restaurants serving great food by great servers.

If you want to Obama it up and make it fair for everyone, then I suggest just raising menu prices 15% across the board and implement a no tipping policy and pay all the wait staff exactly the same per hour rate. we'll then be left with average food served by shitty waiters that spit in your food.

i worked in a restaurant for years during college and when I got out and it sucks. your basically a slave for the tables and people will abuse the shit out of you. Often times they are making like $2-4 an hr, and your right they did accept the job, except the industry is based off tips. so if you want to get rid of it, then guess what, that $7 hamburger you just ate at a dinner is now 10.50 bc the owner is going to have to pay someone $12+ an hr to serve even at a shitty place to do it. this way you atleast get some say in what your waiter/waitress deserves.

i normally do 20% if your good at your job, less if you piss me off or slack off (yes i can tell whose fault it is after 5+yrs in the industry), and more if you show some personality or make it entertaining.

jag- if you ever worked in the food industry you would be singing a different tune. I mean they take your order, bring you drinks, silverware/napkins, bring you your food, any sauces/seasoning they need, refill your drinks, take away dirty dishes out of your way etc etc. now if your bill was $25, you dont think they deserve $4-6 for that after you have had them running back n forth

+1 Great Post ! It sounds like you know what really goes on. Also it's fair to mention that the IRS pencils in your tip $$ even if you're stiffed.
