Dodgers, Diamondbacks Part Of Packed Hump Day

Hump Day has it all this week, from a half-dozen matinees, to a prime-time game on ESPN plus a late-night affair in the desert. I'm ordering one from Column A, another from Column C and an update from Column B.

We'll start in the middle of Wednesday's sandwich with a combination review and preview of the Nationals-Phillies series in Philadelphia. Washington took Monday's opener 2-1 behind the pitching of Gio Gonzalez and his bullpen. The Nats closed at -130 for the game which never threatened the 7-run total.

The setback in Game 1 dropped the Phils a game below .500 (21-22, -8.7 units) in last place of the NL East, still five behind first-place Atlanta who also suffered defeat on Monday. The victory improved the Nationals to 25-17 (+4.6 units) and inched them to within a half-game of the Braves.

Tuesday's tilt opened with the Phillies 160 favorites in a mound matchup between Roy Halladay and Washington's Jordan Zimmermann. The price was bet down to -150 on the Don Best odds screen with the initial 6½-run total holding. Philadelphia is 6-1 in Halladay's seven starts vs. the Nats since joining the club before the 2010 season.

It is Wednesday's series finale that has created most of the buzz surrounding this series as Cole Hamels faces the Nationals for the first time since admitting to beaning Bryce Harper a little more than two weeks ago in DC. The Phils have cashed each of his last seven trips to the mound, and they opened as $1.60 chalk. Edwin Jackson is slated to start for the Nats with a 6½-run total ('over' -120).

Rangers, Mariners close set at Safeco Field
Shifting to Column A, the Texas Rangers and Seattle Mariners will wrap up their 3-game set with a 3:40 p.m. (ET) first pitch on Wednesday. Texas sends Scott Feldman to the mound for just his third start of the campaign; Seattle counters with Kevin Millwood who is coming off a 2-hit shutout last Friday at Coors Field.

Texas is as high as -150 on some Wednesday openers and the total is eight runs.

The Mariners scored a mild upset as +125 'dogs Monday when Felix Hernandez bested Rangers rookie Yu Darvish by a 6-1 count. Texas was a favorite in the -150 to -160 range for Game 2 on Tuesday, with those results still pending. Matt Harrison was scheduled for the visitors against Seattle's Hector Noesi.

Feldman has been pressed into the rotation in place of Neftali Feliz who was placed on the DL due to an elbow injury. Feliz is expected to miss the next 6-8 weeks, and there is concern he won't be able to return to a starting role once he does come back. That has prompted talk that Texas is looking for another starter, and the name Roy Oswalt has popped up after the former Astros and Phillies pitcher recently worked out for the Rangers.

Don't look for more than 4-5 innings (80 pitches or so) out of Feldman on Wednesday. The lanky right-hander has made seven starts (plus four relief outings) vs. the Mariners since the '09 campaign got underway, and Texas is 4-3 in his starting assignments.

Millwood's shutout in Denver was his first blank job since he hurled three for the Phillies in '03. He also had a solid outing in a win at the Yankees before that start, and did a great job in his season debut at Texas back on April 11 (6 IP, 1 ER), failing to get the decision in the Mariners' 4-3 comeback win.

Lilly & Saunders Meet In Desert Finale
We reach dessert on Wednesday's slate that concludes with an NL West clash between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Arizona Diamondbacks. The first pitch at Chase Field (9:40 p.m. ET) will be delivered by Joe Saunders, and he'll be opposed by LA's Ted Lilly in a matchup of veteran southpaws.

Chris Capuano's arm and three homers from the Dodgers lineup helped Los Angeles to a 6-1 win on Monday as small road pups. The Diamondbacks were once again favored in Game 2 with Trevor Cahill priced at -140 against LA's Aaron Harang.

The Dodgers are rolling along with the best record in the bigs – 29-13, +14.3 units entering play Tuesday – and Lilly has been a big factor behind the fast start. Los Angeles is 6-1 when he takes the mound, 2-0 on the road. Lilly has made six starts vs. Arizona since donning LA blue during the 2010 season, and the Dodgers are 3-3 with his ERA a respectable 3.40.

Saunders rolled through April but has since struggled a bit, especially in his last two starts at home (12 ER, 8-1/3 IP). The D-Backs have dropped three of his four assignments so far at Chase Field. Like Lilly, Saunders joined Arizona midway through 2010 and he's seen LA eight times since that point. Arizona is 3-5 in those games (1-3 at home) with Saunders sporting a 4.53 ERA.

Wednesday's finale opened close to a pick 'em and carried a total in the 8½-9 run range.

Wednesday's betting tips: Rays can't solve lefties

Weather to watch

Boston Red Sox at Baltimore Orioles – There’s a 50 percent chance of thunderstorms for this afternoon game. Temperatures will be in the high 70s.

Who’s hot

NBA: The over is 6-1 in the last seven Boston-Philly games.

NHL: The Devils are 6-0 in their last six games playing on one day’s rest.

MLB: The Giants are 14-6 in Barry Zito’s last 20 starts vs. NL Central teams.

MLB: Miami is 4-0 in Carlos Zambrano’s last four starts.

Who’s not

NBA: Boston is 1-5 ATS in its last six games in Philadelphia.

NHL: The over is 2-6-2 in the last 10 Devils-Rangers games in New York.

MLB: Houston is 0-4 in Wandy Rodriguez’s last four starts vs. the Cubs.

MLB: The Rays are 0-5 in their last five games vs. left-handed starters.

Key stat

19 – That’s the margin by which Boston has outscored Philly the past two games with Brandon Bass on the court. Without Bass on the floor, the Sixers have outscored the Celtics by 12. In mid-range field-goal percentage, the Celts are shooting 53.1 percent with Bass on the floor and 26.7 percent without him. The 6-8 power forward has scored in double digits in every game of the series and is averaging 21 points over the last two.

Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Celtics guard Avery Bradley is questionable for Wednesday’s Game 6 after missing Game 5 with problems in both shoulders. Bradley had averaged 23.5 minutes in the series’ first four games. His absence Monday forced Ray Allen back into the starting lineup. Allen went 2-for-7 for 5 points, but Boston overcame it thanks to Brandon Bass’ career-high tying 27 points.

Games of the day

New Jersey Devils at New York Rangers (-130, 4.5)

Boston Celtics at Philadelphia 76ers (-2, 175.5)

Notable quotable

"Not even close. Not even close. You've got fans and then you've got fairweather fans. Take it how you want it." – Kevin Garnett, comparing what he called the Celtics’ “ridiculous crowd” with Sixers fans. Boston leads the series 3-2 heading into Wednesday’s Game 6 in Philly.

Notes and tips

Pacers star Danny Granger sprained his left ankle during the second quarter of Tuesday's Game 5 loss and left the game for good in the third quarter. His status for Thursday's Game 6 is unclear.

Heat forward Chris Bosh (abdominal strain) has been ruled out for Thursday’s Game 6, and coach Erik Spoelstra said "it's too early to say" if Bosh might be able to play in a potential Game 7. Bosh was injured in Game 1 after he got hit while dunking and appeared to land awkwardly on one leg.

The Rangers get winger Brandon Prust back for Game 5 Wednesday, after he missed Game 4 due to suspension. Prust was disciplined for elbowing New Jersey's Anton Volchenkov in the back of the head in Game 3. The Devils tied the series 2-2 with a 4-1 win on Monday.

D-Backs catcher Miguel Montero missed Tuesday's game against the Dodgers with a right groin strain he suffered while trying to track down a foul pop-up on Monday. Montero, 28, is hitting .255 with two homers and 21 RBIs in 38 games. He was replaced by Henry Blanco. Montero expects to return by this weekend at the latest.

The Red Sox activated infielder Kevin Youkilis on Tuesday and put outfielder Ryan Sweeney (mild concussion) on the seven-day disabled list, retroactive to Sunday. Sweeney is the sixth Red Sox outfielder on the DL, joining Carl Crawford, Jacoby Ellsbury, Darnell McDonald, Ryan Kalish and Jason Repko.

Rays outfielder Desmond Jennings is expected to return from the DL on Sunday. He's been sidelined since May 12 with a left knee sprain. The 25-year-old is hitting .265 with three homers and 11 RBIs in 31 games.

Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

-- If Dwight Howard didn't like Stan Van Gundy, how do you think he'd like Jerry Sloan? Sloan is rumored to want back in to NBA coaching.

-- Miami shot 61% from floor and hammered the Pacers, who seem to be helpless if James/Wade play well, which they did the last two games.

-- Tip of the cap to the late Eugene Polley, who died this week at age 96. Man invented the remote control for our TVs. Thank you, sir.

-- Tremendous hockey game in Glendale, with the Kings advancing to the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time since 1993. LA wins 4-3 in OT.

-- In Phoenix, more LA-Arizona drama, as D'Backs blew a 6-1 lead in 7th inning, then blew a 7-6 lead in 9th, as Dodgers continued their dream year with an 8-7 win. Tough night for the two desert teams. Very tough.

-- Imagine being a middle-aged person who has rooted for the LA Kings his/her whole life; this is only your second chance at the Finals. Must be so exciting, especially winning the conference final on an OT goal. Hope all those Kings fans are enjoying the ride.

**************

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud..........

13) Recruiting must be fun these days for San Diego State 's Steve Fisher; he has former Fab Fivers Chris Webber/Jalen Rose all over TV during the NBA playoffs, and he has Aztec alum Kawhi Leonard starting for the Spurs, a team that rarely starts a rookie. What better advertisement for a kid to go play for Fisher? Oh yeah, the weather’s pretty good there, too.

12) This is hard to believe, but Elias Sports Bureau knows all, and they say before Monday night, when Pittsburgh rallied from a 4-0 deficit to beat the Mets, the Pirates had lost 160 games in a row when trailing by 4+ runs. 160 games in a row. Not good.

11) Are there NBA teams who don’t want their stars playing in Olympics this summer, or in the practice games to get the Olympic team ready for London? If so, other than Mark Cuban, they’re awful quiet. Have to think there are some dissenters out there somewhere.

10) Tommy Dempsey is quitting as coach at Rider to go to Binghamton? Is this the case of a guy on thin ice jumping before the ice breaks underneath him, or what? America East isn’t close to as good a league as the MAAC. Interesting career move.

9) Speaking of America East, not often a kid transfers from UAlbany to the ACC, but Logan Aronhalt did just that, going from the Great Danes down to Maryland. Very curious to track his progress with the Terps.

8) Washington Nationals have won nine of their last ten games against the Phillies. Nats are getting a terrific year out of lefty pitcher Gio Gonzalez, but one of the guys they traded to Oakland to get him, Tommy Milone, is 4-0, 0.90 in four home starts. Problem is, he is 2-3, 7.56 on the road.

7) Roger Clemens started this, and now Andy Pettitte/Roy Oswalt are carrying it on; the veteran starting pitcher signing with a contender a decent ways into the season.
Picking his spot to try and get into the postseason, partly because they’re not durable enough anymore to pitch a whole season. Curious to see where Oswalt winds up; he’s never pitched in the AL before, against the DH.

6) Kobe Bryant will make $58M over the next two seasons. Wonder who will be coaching him for those two years.

5) Cincinnati-Xavier hoop rivalry, one of the most bitter in the country, will be played in the neutral downtown arena next season. Good idea after last year’s ugly fracas. Let things cool down for a couple years.

4) If a college coach wishes a recruit “Good luck” before a game he is at, that’s an NCAA violation, further evidence the NCAA rulebook needs to be pared down. A lot. Too many silly rules.

3) Buccaneers traded Kellen Winslow Jr to Seattle, then signed former Colt TE Dallas Clark, who won’t enjoy catching balls from Josh Freeman as much he did being one of Peyton Manning’s top targets with Indy.

2) Have to give Dick Vitale a lot of credit; he has dedicated himself to raising money to fight cancer; his gala dinner in Florida Friday night raised over $2.1M. He has done a tremendous amount of fund raising to battle cancer. Good for him.

1) Guy who caught Scott Van Slyke’s first big league homer in LA Sunday night wasn’t greedy, asking for a signed ball in exchange for the actual home run ball; kid could’ve gotten a lot more had he tried.

Public opinion: Wednesday's top consensus plays

NBA:

Boston Celtics at Philadelphia 76ers (-2, 175.5)

No team has won consecutive games in this series, making the Sixers potentially attractive here. But they can’t afford to let the Celts take 33 free throws like they did in Game 5. Philly was outscored by 16 at the foul line in Monday’s 101-85 loss. Rajon Rondo is averaging 14.6 assists in the series and has hit 22 of his last 40 shots.

Consensus: Celtics 57 percent/76ers 43 percent

NHL:

New Jersey Devils at New York Rangers (-130, 4.5)

This increasingly chippy series appears headed the distance, which would be the third Game 7 for the Rangers this postseason. The home team has won five of the last seven meetings, and the pressure is on New York to respond to New Jersey’s 4-1 thumping in Game 4. Whichever team controls the front of the net should prevail.

Consensus: Rangers 69 percent/Devils 31 percent

MLB: Los Angeles Dodgers at Arizona Diamondbacks (-105, 9)

Bettors believe in 36-year-old Ted Lilly, who has an incredible WHIP of 0.90. Arizona's Joe Saunders hasn't been too shabby overall, but he's been rocked in his last three starts to the tune of a 9.42 ERA. The Dodgers own the best record in baseball.

Consensus: Dodgers 65 percent/Diamondbacks 35 percent

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Wednesday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Streaking

Ted Lilly, Los Angeles Dodgers (5-0, 1.79 ERA)

The 36-year-old lefty seems to be getting better with age. He has a sparkling WHIP of 0.90 and is holding batters to a .170 average. Lilly has gone at least six innings in every start this season. Last time out, he allowed zero earned runs over seven innings to the Cardinals. However, Lilly is just 5-7 with a 4.14 ERA in 14 career appearances vs. Arizona.

Scott Diamond, Minnesota Twins (3-0, 1.40 ERA)

The 25-year-old lefty is perfect through three starts, though he was finally scored upon in his last outing. He owns a WHIP of 0.98, and the league is hitting .236 against him. Diamond is showing great control, with 13 strikeouts against two walks in 19 1/3 innings.

Slumping

Daniel Bard, Boston Red Sox (3-5, 4.85 ERA)

The 26-year-old right-hander has yielded at least four earned runs in three of his past four starts. He has a terrible strikeout-to-walk ratio of 26:25. After Bard walked five and hit two batters in five innings against the Phils last Friday, Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine called the free passes unacceptable. "That amount of walks, you can't leave your team out there, and you can't keep letting those guys on base,” Valentine said. “He's tough to hit in the strike zone. Might as well throw it in there.”

Marco Estrada, Milwaukee Brewers (0-3, 4.63 ERA)

The converted reliever has served up eight homers in his last five starts. In his last four starts covering 24 innings, Estrada has yielded 15 earned runs on 26 hits. The Brewers lost each of those starts. Estrada was forced into the rotation following Chris Narveson’s shoulder injury, and the experiment simply has not worked.
