Seattle Mariners In Texas For Memorial Day

Two of the best young National League pitchers square off in ESPN's Sunday broadcast when the Washington Nationals and Atlanta Braves close out a weekend series in prime time at Turner Field. Gio Gonzalez is on tap for the NL East-leading Nats with the Braves just a game behind beginning the holiday weekend and scheduled to throw Brandon Beachy in opposition.

Don Best Sports is sending this game out with the Braves $1.40 favorites, and favoring the 'under' on a 7½-run total.

Kenny White says the weather might be the most important factor in this battle between division rivals.

"Check the weather," the Don Best analyst noted Friday in the Las Vegas studios. "Beachy's last outing in Cincinnati where the temperature approached 90, he gave up three home runs. He'd only allowed one in his first 54 innings."

The Weather Channel projected the low-to-mid 80s for first pitch (8:00 p.m. ET) for Atlanta in its Friday forecast.

That might be warm enough to shy away from Beachy, but Don Best Sports' Pat Williams thinks Washington's pitcher is already hot enough on his own.

"Gio Gonzalez, you know I've been high on this guy all season long," Williams said. "I mean, this train is rolling down the tracks and it ain't coming off anytime soon."

The Washington lefty is 6-1 with a 1.98 ERA, and has allowed just one home run in nearly 55 innings of work. Seven quality starts are among Gonzalez' nine trips to the mound, tied for second on the team with Stephen Strasburg entering weekend play behind Jordan Zimmermann's eight.

Williams sees value on both the Nats and 'under' for the game, but White reminds players that Beachy is tough at home.

Mariners At Rangers For Memorial Day Contest

Two-time defending American League Champion Texas will be at home for the unofficial start of summer on Memorial Day as the Rangers host the Seattle Mariners. The battle between AL West foes will begin at 8:05 p.m. (ET).

Don Best projects Texas as a $1.90 favorite with left-hander Matt Harrison on the mound. Seattle goes with Kevin Millwood in the matchup. The total is 10 and shaded to the 'over,' which doesn't suggest a pitching duel.

White called Millwood "the ageless wonder" despite checking in with a 3-4 record. Three straight wins have helped lower his ERA to 3.72, and Millwood threw six innings of shutout ball against the Rangers in Seattle on Wednesday. He is currently working on a 20-2/3 innings scoreless streak.

The solid streak should come to an end in this start, White believes, projecting Millwood to "get hit...and get hit hard" in Monday's game.

Williams believes Harrison to be just as easily vulnerable on Monday, and that sets up the expected high-scoring game the oddsmakers are anticipate.

Don Best Sports wishes everyone a safe and prosperous Memorial Day Weekend.

Sunday's betting tips: Spurs on ATS run vs. Thunder

Weather to watch

Kansas City Royals at Baltimore Orioles – An 11-mph wind will be blowing out to left at Camden Yards. Temperatures will be in the high 80s.

Who’s hot

MLB: Detroit is 11-5 in Rick Porcello’s last 16 road starts.

MLB: The under is 7-3 in Houston pitcher J.A. Happ’s last 10 starts on four days’ rest.

NBA: The Spurs are 7-2 ATS in their last nine games against the Thunder.

WNBA: Atlanta is 13-4 ATS in its last 17 games against Indiana.

Who’s not

MLB: Atlanta is 1-5 in Brandon Beachy’s last six starts vs. NL East teams.

MLB: The Indians are 3-13 in the last 16 games with umpire Marvin Hudson behind the plate.

NBA: The under is 0-4 in the last four Thunder-Spurs games.

WNBA: Seattle is 1-9 ATS in its last 10 games against Minnesota.

Key stat

33 – That’s how many shots OKC forward Serge Ibaka has blocked in nine playoff games, a continuation from the regular season when he averaged an NBA-best 3.65 and set a franchise record with 241 blocks. “We understand he’s a heck of a weak-side defender and a great shot-blocker,” Spurs big man Tim Duncan said. “We all have that in the back of our minds. We’ll play it accordingly.” Game 1 of the Western Conference finals is Sunday night in San Antonio.

Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

The Braves placed third baseman Chipper Jones on the 15-day DL, retroactive to May 24, with a bruised left calf. It’s a big blow to Atlanta. The Braves are 21-8 in games Jones has played, 5-14 in games he hasn’t. And they’ve dropped 10 of the last 12 games he’s missed. Look for Juan Francisco to see most of the starts in Jones’ absence.

Game of the day

Oklahoma City Thunder at San Antonio Spurs (-5.5, 204.5)

Notable quotable

“He can shoot. He’s athletic. He’s quick. You can’t stop a guy like that. … You just have to make it difficult for him. Don’t let him catch the ball where he wants to catch it. Try to get a hand in on some of his shots. Just be physical with him.” – Spurs forward Stephen Jackson, on the challenge of guarding NBA leading scorer Kevin Durant.

Notes and tips

The Indians placed catcher Carlos Santana on the 7-day disabled list with a mild concussion he suffered Friday when he got hit in the facemask by a foul ball. Santana, who has five homers and 24 RBIs in 43 games, must pass a concussion test before he can return.

Los Angeles Kings winger Simon Gagne (concussion) is practicing with the team and has been cleared for contact, but is unlikely to play in the Stanley Cup finals against New Jersey. Gagne has not played since Dec. 26.

Heat forward Chris Bosh (abdominal strain) says his rehab is going “better than expected,” but he has not resumed basketball activities and Miami is preparing to play the Eastern Conference finals without him. Bosh hopes to play at some point in the series, which begins Monday in Miami.

Braves catcher Brian McCann was out of the starting lineup for the fourth straight game Saturday with flu-like symptoms, but did pinch-hit. He remains day-to-day. The All-Star is hitting .254 with six homers and 24 RBIs.

Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

We're going to go thru the over/under win totals for each NFL team in this space over the next week, division-by-division. Today, the AFC West:

-- Broncos, 9.5, under -$120-- How happy is John Fox these days?

-- Chiefs, 8, over -$130-- ESPN guys were touting Chiefs this week.

-- Raiders, 7, under -$120-- Not much stability for this franchise.

-- Chargers, 9, over -$130-- Not favored here for first time in years.

Remember, what I've listed here are just odds, not any prediction.......

**************

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: In a perfect world, where I decide everything....

13) The drinking age would be 18; if you're old enough to go to war, you're damn sure old enough to have a beer.

12) That said, I'd raise the driving age to 17; 16 is too young to drive. Too many distractions. Of course, I'm 52 and always distracted. Go figure.

11) I'd get rid of the designated hitter, except for spring training and in the All-Star Game. If you can't play the field, then retire.

10) Speaking of the All-Star Game, I'd get rid of the National and American Leagues and go with geographic realignment, then whichever conference had the edge in interconference play would get home field edge in World Series.

Every third year, the All-Star Game would be US against the World.

9) No more Electoral College; the Presidential candidate who gets the most votes wins, regardless of what state anyone lives in.

8) I'd take the radios out of NFL players' helmets; coaches have six days to coach the players. On Sunday, just let the players play.

7) If I ran the Colorado Rockies, wouldn't have any 49-year old pitchers who can't get hitters out; we'd be releasing Jamie Moyer, maybe hire him as a coach or an announcer, but his playing days would be over. .

6) NBA playoff series would be best-of-3, the Finals best-of-5. You don't need seven games to determine which team is better, not in basketball. I'd also let kids jump right from high school to the NBA, and if they don't get on a roster the first year, they could enroll in a college for second semester, starting that January, and start playing ball the following fall.

5) Someone would put a Steak 'n Shake and In 'n Out burgers in Albany.

4) If I ran NBC, I'd tell Notre Dame to get in a conference for football, or no more TV money from us; they'd be scurrying to a league pretty quickly.

3) No more fighting in the NHL; I know lot of people within the game want to keep it. I think its a great game, with or without, but better without it.

2) If I were former used car salesman Alan R Selig, I'd use my vast power as Commissioner of Baseball to make the Wilpons sell the Mets. These people are either corrupt, stupid or both; why would you want them owning one of your most visible franchises?

1) I'd go along with Governor Christie in New Jersey and make gambling on sports legal in the whole country; legalize internet poker too. This could be happening soon; we'll see later this year.

Public opinion: Sunday's top consensus plays

NBA:

Oklahoma City Thunder at San Antonio Spurs (-5.5, 204.5)

The Spurs are on an 18-0 SU and 15-2-1 ATS run, but bettors are grabbing the points with the explosive Thunder, who have been nearly as impressive as San Antonio in these playoffs. OKC has sent home the last two NBA champions, losing just once. "I know they're the No. 1 seed — they're a tough group, they haven't lost in a couple months," said Thunder forward Kevin Durant, the league's leading scorer. "But I think we bring another dimension to the table as well and we come out and compete."

Consensus: Thunder 59 percent/Spurs 41 percent

MLB:

Cleveland Indians at Chicago White Sox (-159, 9)

Bettors like the first-place Indians, who will face White Sox starter Gavin Floyd. He's 6-4 with a 4.42 ERA in 13 career starts against Cleveland. The Indians counter with Ubaldo Jimenez, who has gone six innings while allowing three runs in each of his last two starts. However, Jimenez continues to struggle with his control, having allowed 38 walks in 52 innings.

Consensus: Indians 60 percent/White Sox 40 percent

Sunday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Streaking

Chris Capuano, Los Angeles Dodgers (6-1, 2.25 ERA)

Batters are hitting .201 against the 33-year-old lefty, who has lasted at least six innings in seven straight starts. This is the most wins and lowest ERA Capuano has ever had through his first nine starts in any season. In 14 career appearances against Houston, he’s 6-4 with a 3.34 ERA.

P.J. Walters, Minnesota Twins (2-1, 2.95 ERA)

The 27-year-old right-hander, who had only made four career starts before this season, has shined in three starts for the Twins. Last time out he tossed a complete game against the White Sox, allowing two runs on five hits and fanning eight. He has a WHIP of 0.94 and is holding batters to a .200 average. However, Walters has served up five homers.

Slumping

Jamie Moyer, Colorado Rockies (2-4, 4.99 ERA)

With an obscene WHIP of 1.75, Moyer might not make it until age 50. The 49-year-old, soft-tossing lefty has given up at least five earned runs in three of his last four starts. The league is hitting .325 against him. In nine career appearances vs. the Reds, Moyer is 2-4 with a 6.00 ERA.

Clay Buchholz, Boston Red Sox (4-2, 7.84 ERA)

Batters are hitting .330 against the 27-year-old right-hander, who was tagged for five earned runs in 5 1/3 innings last time out against the Orioles. He has given up 11 gopher balls this season, and has just as many strikeouts, 27, as walks.

Sunday Night Baseball: Nationals at Braves
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Washington Nationals at Atlanta Braves (-140, 6.5)

Sunday Night Baseball features the Nationals and the Braves, with host Atlanta trying to stay close to Washington atop the National League East. The Nats won 8-4 Saturday after taking the series opener 7-4, marking the first time Washington has scored seven or more runs in consecutive games this year.

ESPN LOVE

In the past, the Nationals were never a team considered for ESPN's programming, but this up-and-coming team is now making their second Sunday night appearance on the network this month.

They lost the earlier showing against the Phillies, 9-3 as +100 home underdogs, on May 6. The big news from that game was when Cole Hamels beaned Bryce Harper in the first inning. Harper would later steal home, becoming only the second player in Nationals' franchise history to do so.

LIFE'S A BEACHY

Atlanta's starter Brandon Beachy has been surprisingly tough for the Braves. He's 5-2 with a 1.77 ERA, giving up just 40 hits in 61 innings. The righty has won two of his last three starts, sporting a 2.05 ERA in that span.

Beachy faced the Nationals twice last season in Washington, posting nearly identical stat lines. He went 11 total innings giving up eight runs and 12 hits, striking out 13 while walking only five. This will be only his fourth home start of the season.

GIO'S GOOD

Nationals starter Gio Gonzalez is no slouch either. He's 6-1 with a 1.98 ERA, allowing just 32 hits in 54.2 innings. Outside of a disastrous first start against the Cubs at Wrigley Field, the former Oakland starter has been great on the road. He allowed just four earned runs in four starts against San Diego, L.A., Cincinnati, and Philadelphia. It appears Gonzalez has begun to conquer his control issues, walking four or more batters in a game just twice this season.

HITTERS TO WATCH

Danny Espinosa 3-for-7 vs. Beachy
Ryan Zimmerman 4-for-6 vs. Beachy
Jack Wilson 2-for-12 vs. Gonzalez (Only Atlanta hitter who has faced him)

TRENDS

*Washington is 1-5 in their last six Sunday games
*Washington is 4-0 in Gonzalez's last four starts
*Atlanta is 4-0 in their last four Sunday games
*The over is 3-0-1 in Beachy's last four Sunday starts
