The Texas Rangers have signed free-agent right-hander Roy Oswalt, according to an individual familiar with the process.
Club officials were not immediately available for comment.
Oswalt, 34, spent last season with Philadelphia, going 9-10 with a 3.69 ERA. He was on the disabled list twice last season because of lower-back inflammation.
The length and terms of the deal with Oswalt could not be determined. He is likely to make a few minor-league starts before joining the Rangers. Left-hander Andy Pettitte, who sat out all of last season, made four minor-league starts before going into the New York Yankees' rotation.
Oswalt and the Rangers talked during the off-season, but the club could not find a fit for him. An opening arose when right-hander Neftali Feliz went on the disabled list May 19 because of a sprained ligament in the right elbow.
Right-hander Scott Feldman replaced Feliz in the rotation, but that left the bullpen without a true long reliever. Manager Ron Washington has indicated he liked having Feldman in that role.
According to Yahoo! Sports, the Los Angeles Dodgers also made an offer to Oswalt.
We'll have more on this developing story as it becomes available.
