Marlins, Nationals Continue Series In Miami

Expectations were high for the Miami Marlins after a spending spree last winter put them in position to challenge for the NL East title. What was not expected is that challenge would be presented to the New York Mets and Washington Nationals at this stage of the 2012 campaign.

That is where we stand, however, eight weeks into the schedule with the Nationals on top of the division and holding a 2.5-game advantage over the Mets and Marlins in a deadlock for second.

Miami cut into that lead with a 5-3 triumph Monday as 115 chalk vs. Washington, and the two squads were set to play Game 2 of the series on Tuesday when the Fish were $1.35 home favorites. Anibal Sanchez was slated to pitch for the Marlins against the Nats' Edwin Jackson with a 7½-run total.

The division foes will draw their series to a close Wednesday night (7:10 ET). Chien-Ming Wang is in line to make his first start of the season for Washington while Josh Johnson takes his turn in Ozzie Guillen's rotation.

Wang has made one 3-inning relief stint since returning from the DL, picking up the win and allowing a solo homer for the only damage while he was on the mound last Friday in Atlanta. He made 11 starts for the Nats in the second half of 2011, facing the Fish in one of those. At Nationals Park, Wang worked 6-2/3 and allowed three runs – all on home runs to Gaby Sanchez and Brett Hayes – in grabbing the win.

Johnson was nicked up in his last outing (5 IP, 3 ER), but the Marlins still got the 7-6 home win over Tim Lincecum and the Giants to reward those laying $1.50 in the contest. It was the fifth straight Miami win with Johnson on the hill as the big right-hander has been showing signs of finally getting back to form following his shoulder injury.

The series opener on Monday was the 301st game between the two clubs, and Miami's victory left the Marlins with a 170-131 record in the series (90-57 since 2004 when the Expos left Quebec for DC). Four of the last five contests have gone 'under' the total.

Snakes & G-Men Collide In NL West Battle
While all five clubs in the NL East were over .500 and packed within four games of each other entering play on Tuesday, the NL West standings couldn't be more different. The Los Angeles Dodgers were holding a 6.5-game lead over second-place San Francisco, and 10.5 ahead of third-place Arizona.

It was the Giants and Diamondbacks who were supposed to battle for the division flag this year, and their ongoing series in San Francisco could very well determine which team is going to present any challenge to the Dodgers in 2012. They will complete the 3-game set Wednesday (10:15 p.m. ET) with a mound duel between a couple of struggling pitchers who were expected to serve as staff aces. Ian Kennedy gets the call for Kirk Gibson's D-Backs and Tim Lincecum is on the bump for Bruce Bochy's Giants.

San Francisco drew first blood with a 4-2 win Monday as a +110 underdog, the Giants' third straight victory over the Diamondbacks this season after dropping the first four clashes. The middle game of the series found the Giants 125 favorites behind Ryan Vogelsong; Joe Saunders was scheduled for Arizona and the match carried a 7-run total.

Kennedy takes the hill Wednesday on a personal 5-game losing skid, while the Snakes have dropped his last six starts. The former USC standout has been bitten by the long ball bug with seven drives leaving the yard during his last four assignments (23 IP). He beat the Giants in his season debut, working into the seventh at home while allowing three runs in a 5-4 win, and Arizona was 4-1 vs. San Fran with Kennedy on the mound last year (1.22 ERA).

That win for Kennedy against the Giants back in April came at Lincecum's expense, and it has been a struggle for the wee right-hander ever since. The 2-time Cy Young winner checks in with a 6.41 ERA which is more than three runs higher than his career mark. The Giants are 1-4 in his five outings at AT&T Park where he has a bloated 4.80 ERA this season

Hot and Not

May 29, 2012

The 2012 MLB season is just about to enter the month of June, allowing baseball bettors to compile a ton of data on each team up to this point. A couple of teams produced some healthy returns for their backers last week, while others simply torched their supporter’s bankrolls. Here’s a look at some of the hottest and coldest teams in the league post Memorial Day.

Money-Makers

Los Angeles Angels (7-1, $619): The team most everyone expected to take the field at the start of the 2012 season looks to have finally found its groove, as manager Mike Scioscia’s squad checks in at 17-10 ($400) in the month of May. After winning Monday night’s slugfest with the Yankees at home, Anaheim has gotten back to the .500 mark. The addition of rookie Mike Trout into the everyday starting line-up has sparked the offense in a big way, and it’s also helped that Albert Pujols has finally rediscovered his slugging ways. As it is, LA sits 6.5-games in back of the 1st place Texas Rangers, but there’s still plenty of season remaining for this club to get back into the playoff picture.

On The Docket: The Halos got two more with the Evil Empire before hosting the Rangers in the division rivals second series of the season; LA dropped two of three when it paid a visit to Arlington a couple weeks back.

Chicago White Sox (6-1, $461): The Palehose got the job done with their pitching last week to reach the top of this list, but Manager Robin Ventura’s troops busted out the bats this past week en route to securing five wins in six tries against the division rival Twins and Indians. They racked up a total of 54 runs in those games and went yard 12 times before Chris Sale picked up his sixth win of the season after striking out 15 Rays in Tampa Monday afternoon. In doing so, the White Sox now sit just a half-game in back of the Tribe for the top spot in the AL Central.

On The Docket: Paul Konerko and his mates have two games remaining with Tampa Bay before returning home to face the Seattle Mariners for three. They’ve profited $786 as visitors but are $301 in the red as hosts.

Philadelphia Phillies (5-3, $234): Don’t look now, but the Phillies are making a charge within the highly competitive NL East even though their two big boppers – Chase Utley and Ryan Howard - continue to rehab in an attempt to get healthy for a late season run. After dropping two of three at home to the division leading Nationals, manager Charlie Manuel’s troops went into St. Louis and took three of four from the Redbirds and then went into New York and took the series opener from the Mets. Recent injuries to Carlos Ruiz and Roy Halladay are concerning, but this club has been getting unexpected contributions all season long.

On The Docket: The Phillies got two more with the Mets at Citi Field before returning home to face the Marlins through the weekend; Philly’s been at its worst at home where it’s 11-13 and -$893 for its betting backers.

Money-Burners

Atlanta Braves (0-8, -$907): Every team endures a prolonged losing stretch throughout the regular season, so it’s best to get it out of the way early as opposed to late when contending teams are all fighting for playoff spots. The Braves are currently in the midst of theirs, and it’s cost them the lead atop the NL East. That said; manager Fredi Gonzalez has been forced to deal with a myriad of injuries. The list includes Chipper Jones, Brian McCann, and Freddie Freeman – all of the team’s main RBI guys. The losing streak reached eight in a row on Memorial Day after Lance Lynn dominated them en route to securing his eighth win of the season.

On The Docket: Atlanta has two remaining with the Redbirds at home before hitting the road to battle the 1st place Nats through the weekend; they’re 16-13 ($311) as visitors to date.

Oakland A’s (1-6, -$496): The losing streak increased to six in a row for manager Bob Melvin’s Athletics who got swept at home by the New York Yankees before dropping the series opener with the Minnesota Twins Monday afternoon. It’s been painful to watch this team attempt to score all season long (#28 at 3.31 runs per game), but some added punch could be right around the corner with Yeonis Cespedes and Manny Ramirez both expected to return to the team over the course of the next week.

On The Docket: The A’s will close out the week on the road at Minnesota and Kansas City before returning home to host the Texas Rangers for four. They’ve dropped 10 of their 25 games played at home (-$515) but stand 12-12 as visitors ($613).

Seattle Mariners (2-6, -$383): After sweeping the Rockies at Coors in Interleague play and following it up by taking two of three from the AL West leading Rangers at home, it looked as if manager Eric Wedge’s Mariners were onto something. Then they dropped all four of their home clashes with the Angels and that idea was quickly scrapped from the drawing board. This team’s offense is frustratingly inconsistent, and while the pitching staff has churned out 28 quality starts (#12), the M’s sit nine-games under .500 because of it.

On The Docket: The Mariners got two more in Arlington before heading to Chicago to battle the red hot White Sox at “The Cell.” If their batting lineup continues to struggle in that venue, there’s simply no hope for this team offensively!

Wednesday’s betting tips: Rondo calls Game 2 “must win”

Weather to watch

Seattle Mariners at Texas Rangers – 21 mph winds are expected to blow in from right field.

Cincinnati Reds at Pittsburgh Pirates – 11 mph winds are expected to blow out to right-centerfield.

Who’s hot

NBA: The under is 25-8 in the Heat’s last 33 home games.

NHL: The Kings are 8-0 in their last eight road games.

MLB: The over is 37-13-1 in Dana DeMuth's last 51 games behind home plate. He's scheduled to work Wednesday's O's-Jays matchup.

WNBA: The Minnesota Lynx are 6-1 ATS in their last seven road games.

Who’s not

NBA: The Celtics are 3-8 ATS in their last 11 playoff games as an underdog.

NHL: The over is 7-20-1 in the Devils’ last 28 vs. Western Conference.

MLB: The Cubs are 3-14 in Ryan Dempster's last 17 starts.

WNBA: The Washington Mystics are 2-10 ATS in their last 12 games overall.

Key stat

8.1 – The Los Angeles Kings have converted only 8.1 percent of their powerplay opportunities in the playoffs. Meanwhile, the Devils struggled early in the postseason with their penalty kill, but rebounded to shut down the Rangers on all of their six PP chances over the last three games of the Eastern Conference final.

Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Dustin Pedroia, Boston Red Sox – Pedroia sat out Tuesday’s game after jamming his thumb Monday night. He’s considered day-to-day for now. The second baseman is hitting .292 with five homers and 21 RBIs this season.

Game of the day

Los Angeles Kings at New Jersey Devils (100, 4.5)

Notable quotable

"It's the conference finals, we can’t just keep giving games away. We feel this is a must-win game for us. Eventually if we’re going to beat these guys, we're going to have to beat them at some point in time at home." – Boston Celtics guard Rajon Rondo about Game 2 against the Miami Heat.

Notes and tips

Boston Celtics coach Doc Rivers told ESPN.com Tuesday he was considering sitting Ray Allen for a game during the Eastern Conference finals, but that he would play in Game 2. Rivers spoke of the dilemma in sitting Allen, who has played with bone spurs in his ankles and struggled as a result. Allen went 1-for-7 on shooting and scored just six points in 39 minutes against in Game 1. He's averaging 9.6 points per game in the postseason, well below his career averages. The Celtics are set as 8-point underdogs in Game 2.

The defending-champion Minnesota Lynx have picked up right where they left off last season, going 4-0 straight up and 3-1 against the spread to begin the WNBA season. The Lynx pace the league averaging better than 90 points per game and take on Washington, which owns the league’s worst offense at 60.5 points per contest, on Wednesday. The Lynx opened as 11-point road favorites.

The NBA Draft Lottery - also known as the Anthony Davis Sweepstakes - is set to go Wednesday. The Charlotte Bobcats are pegged as a +180 favorite to win the lottery followed by Washington (+200), Cleveland (+500), and New Orleans (+650)

Public opinion: Wednesday's top consensus plays

Consensus percentages and odds current as of 8 p.m. ET, Tuesday.

NBA:

Boston Celtics at Miami Heat (-7.5, 177)

The Boston Celtics looked like they were ready to battle with the Heat through the first half of Game 1, but it was downhill for the most part after that. Boston hit just two of its first 12 attempts in the third quarter and never recovered. Coach Doc Rivers said his club would be better prepared for Game 2 and it looks like most bettors believe him.

Consensus: Celtics 55.9 percent

NHL:

Los Angeles Kings at New Jersey Devils (100, 4.5)

Even though goaltenders Martin Brodeur and Jonathan Quick are in the running for the Conn Smythe trophy, early bettors are taking a long look at the over with this 4.5-goal total on the board. Just one of New Jersey’s game against the Rangers played over, but the Kings’ offense has come alive, averaging 2.93 goals per contest in the postseason.

Consensus: Over 57.8 percent

MLB:

San Diego Padres at Chicago Cubs (-133, N/A)

Oddsmakers traditionally love the loveable losers, but maybe bettors are actually realizing how terrible this year’s Cubs team really is. Ryan Dempster, one of the club’s mainstays in the rotation for years, helped Chicago to just three wins in his last 17 starts.

Consensus: Padres 65.3 percent

WNBA:

Chicago Sky at San Antonio Silver Stars (-5, 150)

San Antonio has had a light schedule so far with just two games on record. The Silver Stars split the pair straight up, but have covered in both. They dropped an 83-79 decision to Connecticut last Friday, covering as 7-point underdog. This will be San Antonio’s home opener, while Chicago heads into the matchup riding a 4-10 skid against the spread on the road.

Consensus: Silver Stars 64 percent

Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

We're going to go thru the over/under win totals for each NFL team in this space over the next week, division-by-division. Today, the NFC South:

-- Falcons 9, under -$135-- Try punting on 4th-and-1 next year.

-- Panthers 7.5, under -$115-- Newton needs a better defense.

-- Saints 10, over, -$125-- Multiple distractions; a huge ?mark.

-- Buccaneers 6, under -$120-- How did Schiano get to the NFL?

Remember, what I've listed here are just odds, not any prediction.......

***************

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Random midweek stuff..........

13) It’s a fair question to ask; is Tampa Bay’s Drew Sutton the worst player ever to bat cleanup in a big league game? Bizarre lineups sometimes get used in September, but Tampa Bay’s Memorial Day lineup makes you wonder if Joe Maddon has Chicago’s Chris Sale on his fantasy team.

12) Sutton has 178 career AB in 91 games; Sunday was just his sixth game this season (he was 0-8 in previous two). Jose Lobaton batted 5th; this was his first game since April 12, just his 27th big league game overall (63 PA). The four guys who batted behind Lobaton have to be wondering where they stand with the ballclub, or maybe now they know.

11) This lefty/righty crap is out of hand, its almost become a self-fulfilling prophecy, where left-handed hitters believe they can’t hit lefty pitchers. Luke Scott is 9-56 vs southpaws, so he has to sit against lefties, but Matt Joyce is hitting .250 with two homers against southpaws. Lobatan/Sutton make Joyce look like freakin’ George Brett, no matter who the pitcher is. He should have been in Monday’s lineup.

10) Then there’s Carlos Pena, who’s been fooling big league skippers for over a decade now. A decent fielder who hits like Rob Deer, Pena is .185 vs lefties, .220 vs righties, not exactly the kind of production you want from a corner infielder. Billy Beane preferred Scott Hatteberg to Pena, even before Hatteberg had ever played a game at 1B.

9) That said, the Rays win a hell of a lot more than they should; Maddon is generally an excellent skipper. Maybe getting goofy now and then and playing weird lineups keeps his team loose and on their toes and helps them win in the long run. Go figure.

8) Paul Konerko is 27-50 during his 14-game hitting streak, which ended on Tuesday. That’s 27-50 with a lot of pop.

7) Kid named Billy Hamilton already has 52 stolen bases for a Reds’ farm club in the California League; he’s batting .316 with 10 doubles, 7 triples, and 22 walks. Only red flag is that this his fourth year in pro ball, and he’s still in Advanced Class A. He won’t be 22 until September, though.

6) If you like to play season over/under win totals in the NFL, know that LVH has the Browns at 4.5 wins, MGM has them at 6; play under 6, over 4.5, and if the Browns go 5-11, you win both plays- if they go 6-10, you win one, push one.

Same with the Giants, who are 8.5 at LVH, 10 at betonline.com; if Big Blue has another miraculous 9-7 season, you hit your middle and cash both tickets. Otherwise, all you lose is 10% vigorish on one play, unless they go 10-6 then you get a win and a push.

5) Miami Dolphins will be featured on HBO’s Hard Knocks this summer; expect to see lot of Reggie Bush and bizarre lineman Richie Incognito, who once owned a vehicle with 31 TVs in it. Where did they all go? You’ll probably see a lot of rookie QB Ryan Taneyhill’s wife too; the cameras will definitely like her.

4) NBA Draft Lottery is Wednesday night, the one TV show no one wants to be on, unless you traded into that draft slot. The team that gets the #1 pick (and Anthony Davis) will be glad to be there, though.

3) Ray Allen is shooting 26.8% behind the arc in these playoffs, only 60% from the foul line; he has always been a great shooter. Whats up with that?

2) Technology is our friend: my regular dentist e-mailed my dental x-rays to the root canal specialist for my Wednesday appointment, so I don’t have to stop and pick them up on my way to being tortured Wednesday morning. Novocaine is also our friend.

1) Friday is National Doughnut Day; Krispy Kreme and Dunkin’ Donuts are both giving away free stuff. Enjoy!!!

Lucas Harrell, Houston Astros (4-3, 3.72 ERA)

Harell showed up Clayton Kershaw in his last start, allowing just one run on five singles over 7 1/3 innings of a 3-1 win. He didn’t strike out a batter and walked three, but only needed 94 pitches to get the job done thanks to his dirty sinker. Harell forced the Dodgers into 17 groundball outs and hasn’t allowed more than two runs in his last four trips to the hill.

Yovani Gallardo, Milwaukee Brewers (3-4, 4.19 ERA)

If it weren’t for two rotten starts, Gallardo’s numbers would be much better. He just allowed one run over 7 1/3 innings, striking out five and walking three in a win over Arizona. The victory was Gallardo’s eighth quality start of the season and has thrown at least six innings in each of his last five turns in the rotation.

Slumping

Ian Kennedy, Arizona Diamondbacks (3-5, 4.65 ERA)

Kennedy finished with five losses last season, but has already eclipsed that number before June this year. He was smacked for four runs on seven hits in 5 2/3 innings in a 7-1 loss to Milwaukee. Kennedy gave up two taters and has now yielded seven homers in his last four starts.

Jon Lester, Boston Red Sox (3-4, 4.72 ERA)

Lester’s up-and-down season continues. He allowed seven earned runs and three home runs in last week’s 7-4 loss to the Rays, throwing 48 strikes in his 81 pitches. He won his two previous starts before that, but allowed eight hits in each and allowed four runs in five innings against Philadelphia.

Prepare for the worst: What's behind Weaver and Halladay?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Nothing causes a baseball fan to gasp in horror like seeing your team’s ace grimace on the mound.

The slow, worried walk of the manager out to the pitcher is usually paced by the trance-like chanting of “Oh shit, Oh shit, Oh shit” by team faithful - especially if the pitching reservoirs are an unknown commodity.

There are more than a few worried clubs out there with top-tier hurlers nursing ailments, most recently the Philadelphia Phillies with Roy Halladay, and the Los Angeles Angels with Jered Weaver.

Here’s a look at those injuries and how each team would absorb the loss of a staff ace:

Jered Weaver, Los Angeles Angeles

Weaver left with back pain in the first inning of Monday’s start against the New York Yankees and is now headed for a stint on the 15-day DL. The stud right-hander, who is 6-1 with a 2.61 ERA.

The injury comes at a bad time for the Halos, who take on the Yankees and Texas Rangers this week, hoping to jump above .500. On top of that, the staff is monitoring starter C.J. Wilson, who is day-to-day with a blisters on his fingers. And not the good Ringo Starr kind either.

Relievers Bobby Cassevah and Jordan Walden stepped in for the bulk of the innings once Weaver went down – two of five bullpen pitchers used Monday. Los Angeles could call up Garrett Richards from Triple-A Salt Lake (6.30 ERA in May). Richards appeared in seven games – three starts – last year, posting a 0-2 record and 5.79 ERA with the Angels.

Roy Halladay, Philadelphia Phillies

The Doc visited the doctor to get a closer look at his ailing right shoulder and will now be on the DL for six to eight weeks with a shoulder strain. Halladay left in the second inning of Sunday’s loss to the St. Louis Cardinals and had to wait a day to be examined due to the Memorial Day holiday. Halladay has been a workhorse, having avoided the disabled list since 2005.

Philadelphia is already down one starter, with budding ace Vance Worley on the 15-day DL due to elbow inflammation. With Halladay being shut down for a while, the team can hold up with a four-man rotation until June 6 thanks to a break in the schedule Thursday. Then they may need to dig into Triple-A Lehigh Valley, possibly calling up Dave Bush (4-3, 2.73 ERA), Tyler Cloyd (4-1, 2.15 ERA) or Scott Elarton (5-1, 2.98 ERA).

Ted Lilly, Los Angeles Dodgers

The injury bug has struck the Dodgers rotation, putting left-hander Ted Lilly on the shelf for 15 days with shoulder inflammation. Lilly was off to a strong start for Los Angeles, going 5-1 with a 3.14 ERA and earning 4.17 units.

The Dodgers brought in fellow southpaw Michael Antonin from Triple-A Albuquerque for Monday but sent him back in place of Double-A Chattanooga arm Nathan Eovaldi, who takes the mound in place of Lilly Tuesday. Eovaldi appeared in 10 games – six starts – last season, posting a 1-2 record and 3.63 ERA.

Yu Darvish, Texas Rangers

The Rangers have their fingers crossed for Darvish after the Japanese sensation left his start against the Toronto Blue Jays in the fifth inning due to a sore back Sunday. The rookie right-hander told reporters it may have been a stomach issue that caused the discomfort in his lower back, but Texas won’t be taking chances with its $108 million arm.

Already without the services of starter Neftali Feliz, who is expected to sit until at least the All-Star break with a sprained ulnar collateral ligament, the Rangers signed veteran Roy Oswalt to a one-year deal Tuesday. It's thought the 34 year old will need a couple of weeks before he's ready for big-league hitters. Meanwhile, reliever Scott Feldman has stepped into the rotation in place of Feliz, going 0-2 in three starts heading into Tuesday.

As for Darvish, he’s scheduled to start against the Angels and C.J. Wilson – the man he replaced in the rotation – this Saturday. There has been a stomach bug going around the Texas clubhouse, so the discomfort could pass before the weekend. However, if not, Texas would need to dip into the Triple-A ranks, looking to oft-injured Greg Reynolds or Neil Ramirez.
