Tigers' Casey Crosby set to make major-league debut Friday vs. Yankees

BOSTON -- Nothing like making your major-league debut against the New York Yankees.

Left-hander Casey Crosby will do that Friday night at Comerica Park.

Crosby will step into the rotation spot of Doug Fister, whom the Tigers put back on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday. Fister has a recurrence of the strained side that kept him out for a month earlier this season. The Tigers called up Crosby to take his spot.

Crosby is 4-2 with Triple-A Toledo with a 4.26 ERA. In his last two starts, he has allowed five earned runs in 15 innings and -- here's the impressive part -- with one walk and 16 strikeouts.

Crosby, 23, was a fifth-round pick of the Tigers in 2007. This spring, he competed for the open rotation spot, which Drew Smyly won.

The Tigers counted on Fister as their No. 2 starter. He hasn't won a game this season, and now there's no telling how long he'll be out. He was due to have an MRI exam Wednesday.

In his most recent start, Fister allowed six runs in Boston on Monday. He left far more pitches up than usual. This could be because Fister, apparently in reaction to the injury's return, has been dropping his arm angle. Manager Jim Leyland said that pitching coach Jeff Jones noticed on tape that Fister's arm angle wasn't where it belongs.

Fister made one rehab start in the minors before he returned from his first stay on the disabled list this season. This time, said Leyland, the Tigers will have to be absolutely sure he's healed before he comes back. So he might make more than one rehab start. In the meantime, Crosby gets a big opportunity, beginning with Friday night, when the first big-league hitter he faces might well be Derek Jeter.
