Struggling Dodgers Visit Phillies To Open Week

UPDATE (June 3): The Phillies will switch their rotation up and start Vance Worley in Monday's contest against the Dodgers. Worley has been on the DL with elbow problems, and is expected to be on a short pitch count for the game.

Steady as she goes for Mike Scioscia and the Los Angeles Angels who wrap up an important home series with their division rivals from Texas on Sunday.

The Angels fired the first salvo in the series with a 4-2 victory Friday night. Priced as +115 underdogs, Scioscia's troops rallied from an early 2-0 hole behind Mike Trout's bat and the bullpen backed Jerome Williams' fine start to seal the deal.

Texas was again a small favorite in Game 2 on Saturday that featured a mound duel between Yu Darvish and former Rangers hurler CJ Wilson. It will be Wilson's third start against his former mates in the Angels' first five meetings this year with Texas. Those results were still pending with most outlets on the Don Best odds screen showing 7½-runs for the total.

Sunday's series-ender is set for 3:35 p.m. (ET) and pits Texas southpaw Matt Harrison against Dan Haren.

Haren has really turned things around his last two times out after a rough beginning. He didn't pitch that poorly in all of his initial nine starts, but the results still weren't there with the Angels 1-8 in those contests. A 14-K shutout at Seattle and seven innings of 1-run ball Tuesday at home vs. the Yankees point to much better times ahead for Haren and his backers.

It's going to be especially important that Haren pick up slack as the ace or stopper in the Angels rotation while Jered Weaver is on the disabled list nursing a sore back. Haren missed the Rangers in Arlington during the mid-May set, and Texas has kicked him around pretty good the last three times they've faced him (Angels 1-2, Haren 8.63 ERA).

Harrison suffered the loss in the only game the Angels won in Texas a few weeks ago. The southpaw came out for the seventh, put two runners on and left with the score tied two-all before both eventually made a full 360 around the bases and scored on sac flies in a 4-2 Halos victory.

He made his major league debut against the Angels and won that assignment back in July 2008, but the Rangers are 1-3 in his four starts vs. their lineup since then with most of his work in 2009 against them from the 'pen. This will be just his second career start at the Big A, and his other happens to be his only victory in the series since his big league debut (Sept. 2011, 6 IP, 1 ER).

Dodgers Continue Road Trip In Philly
A couple of old National League rivals get together for the first time this season on Monday when the Los Angeles Dodgers visit the Philadelphia Phillies. The 4-game series gets underway with a couple of big names on the hill and ESPN will provide coverage beginning at 7:00 p.m. (ET).

The Dodgers just embarked on a long 10-game trek that started in Colorado this weekend and will eventually take them to Seattle next weekend. Los Angeles was struggling with seven losses among its last nine games entering Saturday's match with the Rockies, and the Dodgers' lead in the NL West had shrunk to four over the Giants.

The Phillies, meanwhile, had won seven of their last nine before Saturday's clash against the Miami Marlins. They're last in the NL East, but with only 2.5-games between themselves and the front-running Washington Nationals.

Los Angeles will pin its hopes Monday on Clayton Kershaw while the Phils send Cliff Lee to the bump at Citizens Bank Park.

Lee remains winless on the season despite decent stats such as a 3.00 ERA and a 1.02 WHIP that ranked 11th among all major league hurlers when play started Saturday. The Phillies have won three of his last four assignments, however, and he has all but owned the Dodgers over his career. Dating back to his time in Cleveland, his teams are a perfect 3-0 when Lee takes the mound vs. LA and his ERA stands at 0.40 in those contests.

The Dodgers won Kershaw's first five starts of the campaign, but went 2-4 with him toeing the rubber in May, including losses for the lefty in his last two assignments. Los Angeles is 0-5 in his last five tries against the Phils, and 0-3 when he starts at CBP where he has a 6.89 ERA.

Citizens Bank Park has been unkind to the Dodgers overall since opening in 2004. The Phillies are 15-10 against LA in regular season action on the diamond, 20-10 when including 2008-09 NLCS games. Philadelphia will begin play Monday having won nine of the last 11 vs. LA.

Sunday's Betting Tips: Reds are Sunday's best

Weather to watch

New York Yankees at Detroit Tigers – A 21-mph wind will be blowing out to left. There’s a 30 percent chance of thunderstorms, with a projected temperature of 74 degrees.

Who’s hot

NBA: The home team is 13-5 ATS in the last 18 Heat-Celtics games.

MLB: The under is 7-3 in Oakland A’s pitcher Tommy Milone’s last 10 starts.

MLB: The Reds are 17-4 in their last 21 Sunday games.

WNBA: Tulsa is 5-0 ATS in its last five games following an ATS loss.

Who’s not

NBA: The over is 7-18-1 in the last 26 Heat-Celtics games in Boston.

MLB: The Angels are 3-10 in Dan Haren’s last 13 starts on grass.

MLB: The Cubs are 1-7 in their last eight games vs. lefty starters.

WNBA: Seattle is 0-4 ATS in its last four meetings with Los Angeles.

Key stat

19 – After combining for just 7 points in Game 2, the Celtics’ bench contributed 19 points in their Game 3 win. In addition, Marquis Daniels and Keyon Dooling played tremendous defense. Boston was plus-14 with Daniels on the floor, plus-10 with Dooling on the floor. Daniels finished with 9 points and 5 rebounds, and Dooling had 7 points and 4 rebounds. Look for that duo and Mickael Pietrus to get substantial minutes Sunday.

Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Astros cleanup hitter Carlos Lee remains out with a strained hamstring he suffered Friday. He’s hitting .297 with four homers, eight doubles and 23 RBIs. The first baseman also has drawn 15 walks and has an on-base percentage of .348.

Game of the day

Miami Heat at Boston Celtics (+1, 180.5)

Notable quotable

“Everybody knows we’ve been able to bounce back. … We don’t look at the statistics. We don’t look at the records. Records are made to be broken. We’re just going to take it one game at a time, hopefully hold down our home court in Game 4, and see what happens.’’ – Celtics forward Paul Pierce, on whether his team can come back and overtake the Heat.

Notes and tips

Heat forward Chris Bosh (strained abdomen) went through a light workout Saturday, but media reports indicated he is still not on the verge of returning. Miami hopes to have Bosh back by the NBA finals at the latest, assuming the Heat makes it that far.

The Baltimore Ravens are getting thin on the defensive line. Defensive Player of the Year Terrell Suggs partially tore his Achilles in late April, and now DE Michael McAdoo has ruptured his Achilles. McAdoo underwent surgery Friday. In addition, DT Ryan McBean will open the season with a three-game suspension.

The Phillies placed Jose Contreras on the DL with a strained right elbow and said the 40-year-old reliever's season is likely over. Philadelphia recalled Michael Schwimer from Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Contreras suffered the injury in Friday’s 6-4 win over the Marlins; he entered that contest with six straight scoreless appearances.

Angels ace Jered Weaver (6-1, 2.61 ERA) said his lower back strain is improving and hopes to miss no more than two or three starts. "You don't want to push it too hard, even though the competitor in you wants to," he said. "You have to take it slow, take each bullpen session slow, and just try to work back into it until you get that trust back and go from there."

Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

Phil Steele's college football magazine is out; lot of great info in there for the coming season. Here are his six toughest schedules for 2012........

6) Washington-- Had a screwed up offensive line last season.

5) Florida-- 10 starters back on defense, but expectations are high.

4) Michigan-- First game vs Meyer's Buckeyes should be interesting.

3) Iowa State-- Mizzou/A&M left Big X, West Virginia/TCU are in.

2) Ole Miss-- 6-18 last two years; new coach. Rebuilding. Not good.

1) Notre Dame-- 15-28-2 vs spread as home favorite last nine years.

************

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud..........

13) The Mets are 30-23, a game out of first place; if the season ended this weekend, the Mets would play Miami in the Wild Card game. They need to start thinking like contenders.

12) Friday night, the Mets let their ace, Johan Santana pitch the 9th inning of an 8-0 game because the franchise had never had a no-hitter. He wound up throwing 134 pitches and getting the no-hitter. There was much rejoicing amongst Met fans, those same people who will be bitching like hell should Santana come up lame or have a lousy second half. He is 33 and coming off a serious arm operation. 134 pitches is a serious night's work.

11) By the way, Santana's next start, if he took his regular pitching turn, is Wednesday against the Nationals, the FIRST-PLACE Nationals, a team a game ahead of the Mets in the standings. But Santana isn't going to take that start; he'll either pitch against the Nationals Thursday or against the Bronx Bombers Friday, in the Subway Series.

Bronx Bombers are a local rival, but they're an American League team, not one of the Mets' divisional rivals. If Santana doesn't pitch against the Nats and pitches Friday, letting him go for the no-hitter would've weakened the team in the biggest series they've played so far this season. Not good.

10) Now maybe Santana will stay healthy and keep doing real well and the fans will be delirious because they finally saw a no-hitter pitched by one of their guys, but at the end of the day, management's job is to give the team the best chance to win over the long haul.

Anything else is grandstanding, and grandstanding doesn't win games.

\9) Things change quickly; couple days ago, I was referring to the Spurs as one of the all-time great teams, and they may still be that, but right now, it is a dogfight with the Spurs and Thunder in the Western Conference final. The betting favorite has now won the last 20 NBA games; not beaten the spread, just won the game. That means no road teams are winning, and the Thunder still has to win a road game to upset San Antonio.

8) Spurs are still -$200 to win this series, and +$165 to win the NBA title.

7) Heard Saturday night that in his great career, Torii Hunter has robbed 36 hitters of home runs by catching balls hit over the fence. Thats a lot.

6) Political Stat of Day: No American President has been re-elected when the unemployment rate is over 8%'; right now, it is 8.2%. Someone down in Washington better start finding some people some jobs, or else........

5) Watched the extra inning Mariner-White Sox game Saturday; its hard to put into words how horrible an announcer Hawk Harrelson is, just terrible, a complete homer. Now Hawk was one of my favorite ballplayers when I was a little kid; he came up with the A's in the mid-60's, so I have nothing against him, quite the opposite, but he is really hard to listen to now.

4) Milwaukee's Nyjer Morgan had gone 138 ABs without an RBI so far in 2012, and was batting 2nd for the Brewers; he finally homered Friday night, but not sure how a guy that unproductive bats at the top of the order.

3) UCLA christens the refurbished Pauley Pavilion against Indiana State in November; not only is ISU Larry Bird's alma mater, its the school where John Wooden coached for two years before he came to Westwood.

2) LA Kings beat the Devils again in OT, making them 14-2 in playoffs and 10-0 on the road, an amazing feat. Kings have now played seven games in the Stanley Cup Finals in franchise history; six of them went to OT.

1) Last time the first two games of the Stanley Cup Finals both went to OT was 1951, when Montreal-Toronto faced off for Lord Stanley's Cup.

Public opinion: Bettors going over in Heat-Celts

Odds and Consensus percentages current as of 8 p.m. ET, Saturday.

NBA:

Miami Heat at Boston Celtics (1, 180.5)

Game 3 sailed over the total by 13.5 points, and the over has cashed in five of Miami's last six games. In addition, the over is 7-2-1 in Miami's last 10 playoff games as a favorite of 0.5-4.5 points. Neither team shot it particularly well from 3-point range in Game 3; both finished 5 of 17. However, both were outstanding inside the arc. Miami made just 10 of its 20 free-throw attempts. If you are with the consensus and like the over, you can shop around and find 180.

Consensus: Over, 58 percent

MLB:

Arizona Diamondbacks at San Diego Padres (100, 6.5)

Lefty Eric Stults gets the start for San Diego in place of Jeff Suppan, as the 37-year-old was just designated for assignment. The Padres had dropped six of seven entering Saturday night's game. D-Backs starter Trevor Cahill, who has a 3.96 ERA, deserves better than a 2-5 record. He'll deal with a San Diego lineup that has woken up a bit after being one of the weakest in baseball all season.

Consensus: D-Backs, 65 percent

WNBA:

Tulsa Shock at Phoenix Mercury (-7, 164.5)

The Shock enters winless at 0-5, but has covered three times. The Mercury has failed to cover in five tries, going 1-4 SU. Still, bettors like Phoenix to cover 7 points at home Sunday evening. The Mercury clearly has more talent, led by Candice Dupree (19.8 ppg, 6.4 rpg), DeWanna Bonner (17.8 ppg, 7.0 rpg) and Samantha Prahalis (6.2 apg). And Phoenix has only played one home game so far. If only the team also had Diana Taurasi. The reigning WNBA scoring champ remains out indefinitely with a strained hip flexor. She got hurt during training camp and has played in two games.

Consensus: Mercury, 65 percent

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sunday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Streaking

James McDonald, Pittsburgh Pirates (4-2, 2.20 ERA)

The 27-year-old right-hander has dominated in his last two starts, allowing one earned run over 15 innings. He’s gone at least seven innings in five of his past seven starts, and has a pretty 63:19 strikeout-to-walk ratio this season. Batters are hitting .196 against McDonald. However, his road ERA (3.91) is a lot higher than his home ERA (1.28).

Tommy Milone, Oakland Athletics (6-4, 3.64 ERA)

The 25-year-old lefty has been very effective in his last two starts, allowing three earned runs over 13 2/3 innings. He has a 2.60 ERA over his last four starts. For the season, batters are hitting .237 against him. On April 9 against the Royals, Milone tossed eight shutout innings in a 1-0 win. He allowed three hits and three walks.

Slumping

Justin Masterson, Cleveland Indians (2-4, 5.14 ERA)

The 27-year-old right-hander is struggling with his command, as evidenced by the 34 walks he's issued in 68 1/3 innings. Masterson has been lit up twice in his last four starts, most recently giving up seven earned runs over six innings to the Royals. He has a WHIP of 1.49, and batters are hitting .265 against him.

Alex White, Colorado Rockies (1-3, 6.28 ERA)

The 23-year-old right-hander has given up 18 earned runs on 30 hits over his last four starts, and batters are raking him for a .310 average. Houston pounded him for three homers last time out. In his May 13 start against the Dodgers, White yielded six earned runs in 4 1/3 innings of an 11-5 loss.

Sunday Night Baseball: Cardinals at Mets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

St. Louis Cardinals at New York Mets (105, 8)

A pair of National League teams hanging around second place in their divisions meet for Sunday Night Baseball as the Mets and Jon Niese host the Cardinals and Jake Westbrook.

New York has won the first two of this four-game series, outscoring St. Louis 13-0. Johan Santana threw the first no-hitter in franchise history on Friday, and R.A. Dickey shut down the Cards again on Saturday.

Jake and the fat ERA

St. Louis' Jake Westbrook is a consistent pitcher. For his career he is 89-88 with a 4.32 ERA. He's 4-4 this season, although he has registered two straight losing decisions. Westbrook has allowed 15 runs in his last three outings against Atlanta, Philadelphia and Los Angeles. He has not been in good form since May 8th when he pitched seven innings of shutout ball against Arizona in a 6-1 victory. Westbrook's last appearance in New York came against the Mets on July 21, 2011, when he allowed two runs and four hits in a 6-2 Cardinals' win.

Niese is nice

The Mets' starter will be making his second straight start at home after five straight road outings. He has alternated good and bad outings his last four times out, so if this trend holds true, he is due for a good game against the hard-hitting Cardinals tonight. The southpaw took it on the chin last year against the Redbirds, giving up five runs and five hits in six innings of work on July 21, 2011.

What could have been

Both of these teams have been ravaged by injuries this season. New York's Jason Bay has been on the disabled list since May 14th after fracturing his rib. Joining him is Mike Pelfrey, who underwent Tommy John surgery and is done for the season. For the Cardinals, the list is much worse and filled with even bigger talent. Chris Carpenter is dealing with nerve irritation in his right shoulder, while Lance Berkman has a torn meniscus. Jaime Garcia isn't on the disabled list, but he's dealing with soreness in his elbow and is currently considered day-to-day.

Hitters to watch

Ronny Cedeno -- 4-for-11 vs. Westbrook

Andres Torres -- 3-for-12 vs. Westbrook

Matt Holliday -- 1-for-7 vs. Niese

Trends

*Cardinals are 14-6 in their last 20 Sunday games.
*Cardinals are 15-7 in their last 22 road games vs. a left-handed starter.
*Mets are 5-2 in their last 7 during game 3 of a series.
*Mets are 3-9 in Niese's last 12 home starts vs. a team with a winning record.
