Richard Dawson known best for hosting the “Family Feud” and starring in “Hogan’s Heroes” has died, ABC News has confirmed.
He was 79. He died Saturday due to complications from cancer.
“It is with a very heavy heart that I inform you that my father passed away this evening from complications due to esophageal cancer. He was surrounded by his family. He was an amazing talent, a loving husband, a great dad, and a doting grandfather. He will be missed but always remembered…,” wrote Dawson’s son Gary in a posting on Facebook early this morning.
Dawson hosted several incarnations of the popular game show the “Family Feud” after it debuted in 1976.
In addition to hosting “Family Feud,” Dawson appeared on the show “Match Game” as a guest panelist.
He also appeared in films like “The Running Man” and television series such as “The Dick Van Dyke Show” and “The Alfred Hitchcock Hour,” according to IMDB.com.
Dawson was born Colin Lionel Emm in Gosport, Hampshire England on Nov. 30, 1932. He was married to Gretchen Johnson. Together they had a daughter named Shannon Nicole Dawson.
Dawson was previously married to Diana Dors and the couple had two sons, Mark Dawson and Gary Dawson.

Loved Hogan's Heroes as a kid. Everyone used to imitate Sgt. Schultz "I see nothing" all day long. Klink was my favorite. Perfect idiotic show just to laugh at for a half hour. RIP Newkirk.

I never knew he married a contestant. Here's the show where he met his wife, the former Gretchen Johnson. She's the girl in the middle. Skip to the 5:30 mark if you want to see him asking her the question.

In the movie "Auto Focus" (Starring Greg Kinnear as Bob Crane and Willem Defoe), it's intimated that Dawson and Crane would pal around looking for tail. Dawson introduced Crane to this guy Carpenter (played by Defoe) and Crane more or less dumped Dawson as his "running" mate and started hanging with Carpenter (who would often film their sexual encounters with various women). Carpenter has always been the prime suspect in Bob Crane's murder.

I'm thinking he must have made alot from doing family fued because I don't think he ever did very much after that. I remember he appeared in that Arnold Shwarzanager(ever how you spell that name on the fly) movie the Running Man, but not much after that.

I remember thinking back in the day $10,000 was alot of money when a family would win. I thought that was big time. I suppose my son will say the same thing about Who Wants to be a Millionaire someday.

G-d Bless Richard Dawson. Been watching alot of old Feuds lately. None of the hosts after Richard were anywhere close to him. Here were his beautiful words on what was, at the time his final Feud.
