Why are the NYY concerned about reducing payroll by 2014 ?

Couldn't they have a 500 million dollar payroll and still make money with that YES network ?

They want to trim to 189M, but re-signed A-Rod when he opted out.

They've got a lot of bucks tied up in A-Rod, Tex, Jeter, CC, etc.... and still paying guys like Burnett.

189M only in 2014 , and they will be a sub .500 team, IMO !

Hal Steinbrenner wants the Yankees’ payroll down to $189 million by 2014

Hal Steinbrenner said today that the Yankees plan to decrease their payroll to below the $189 million luxury tax figure by 2014, which is when the new collective bargaining agreement threshold kicks in.
Steinbrenner called it “streamlining” the payroll, which is currently at around $210 million.
Wallace Matthews of ESPN New York notes that Alex Rodriguez, Derek Jeter, CC Sabathia, and Mark Teixeira are already under contract for $75 million in 2014, which would leave about $110 million for Robinson Cano, Curtis Granderson, and 19 other players.
Obviously a $189 million payroll is still massive, even looking ahead to 2014, but the Yankees’ payroll hasn’t been below $200 million since 2007, when it was $190 million. Since then their annual payrolls have been $209 million, $201 million, $206 million, $203 million, and now $210 million.
Toss in the usual inflation of player salaries and $189 million in 2014 would represent a pretty significant change.

Because no one under 45 cares at all about baseball. The writing is on the wall.... I lived in NYC for four years and worked with many Wall St types. I don't recall a single time when anyone wanted to go to a baseball game.

Salaries are gonna come down a lot over the next 20 years.

Spot-on. Say what you want about NBA but young people eat it up compared to boring old baseball. I don't like baseball much but been to a game at Fenway recently? Anyone under 40 is on their smart-phone religiously pre-7th inning or so.

Well if they don't field a contending team in that market, attendance will surely suffer. It wasn't that long ago that the first million dollar a year contract was signed ( Nolan Ryan ?).

Now many make 20M +.

nyy will make the same $ regardless of player salaries, therefore reducing salaries and avoiding the luxury tax = increased profit

this is the strategy used by the second most profitable team, Pittsburgh Pirates, unfortunately disregard for winning screws the fans

How would you compare this with demand for bball and hockey?

I don't buy it. New York fans want results.
As much as people say its not a sport that has under 40 fans is wrong.
Still tons of kids ( little ones ) at these games.
They are brought there by their parents, just like their parents did before them.

Sure Hal wants to save money. Not pay such a high luxury tax. But bottom line if he ever wants to sell the team and fill those seats he needs to keep a great product on the field.

He wasn't really talking kids. He meant like 25-45 crowd, and while I live in a baseball hotbed so its a little skewed, I definitely think he has a point.

Baseball becoming a niche sport, the world series wasn't even trending on twitter last fall and it was 1 of the best....

Not like Yanks cutting payroll down to pirates levels or anything, 190mill still gonna be top 3 payrolls in the game. Not like they are gonna be playing moneyball with those #s!

Never understood when Arod opted out, why they paid him $275, nobody was going to pay him $200. One of the dumber deals in sports history. I thought NYY got a gift when Arod opted out. I would have said here is $190 for 10, take it or leave it.

A-Rod's opting out was a gift. Now they are stuck with him for a few more years. He really needs to hit 40+ HR a year and stay healthy and drive in 100+ runs.

$189 will be tough. They will have lost Mo by 2014, but need to sign Granderson to a big contract and still pay Alex, Tex,CC,Jeter,Cano, and a stud pitcher like a Hamels......not going to be too much left for the other 70% of the team !

I wouldn't sign anybody to a 10 year contract that has him playing past 40 for big bucks. Maybe if the guy was 25 years old, MAYBE !
