Rays And Yankees Close Out Series In Bronx

It can often be a double-edged sword when we have a quick rematch of starting hurlers. That is especially true when it's a battle we've seen often in recent seasons, and that is the backdrop when the Tampa Bay Rays and New York Yankees once again pique our interest with an outstanding matchup of southpaws on Thursday to close the crucial AL East series.

CC Sabathia and the Pinstripe Posse opened as $1.45 favorites in the 7:05 p.m. (ET) first pitch at the House That George Built. Tampa Bay's David Price slings in opposition with an 7½-run total that leans 'over.'

Sabathia and Price met exactly four weeks ago on the same diamond, and it was the Yanks who scored a 5-3 win to reward NY backers who were paying -135. Sabathia's stake to being the staff ace of the mighty Yankees since he joined the team for the '09 season is well deserved, and New York is a healthy 8-3 with their rotund lefty on the hill this campaign.

Still, the Rays in general, and Price specifically, have given Sabathia trouble with the Yanks 6-9 in his 15 career starts while wearing pinstripes vs. Tampa Bay. Price checks in Thursday with the Rays 8-5 in his 13 lifetime assignments against New York, and they were a perfect 5-0 when he matched up with Sabathia before May's tussle.

There are some conflicting totals trends for these pitchers; the 'under' is 6-5 in Price's starts, including each of his last four outings, while the 'over' has cashed in Sabathia's last two trips to the mound and seven of 11 for the season.

New York took Game 1 of the set on Tuesday by a 7-0 count. The Yankees were -130 for that contest and -145 for Game 2 on Wednesday, with those results still pending.

Tribe & Tigers Close Motown Series With Matinee
The close-knit races in both East Divisions have served to push the other geographical sets to back burners. Simmering among the groups is the AL Central that was supposed to belong solely to the Detroit Tigers. The Tigers are instead a hunter, instead of the hunted.

Detroit and the Cleveland Indians are indeed on the prowl of the elusive Chicago White Sox as the Tigers and Tribe complete a key series in Motown with a Thursday afternoon affair (1:05 p.m. ET). Cleveland trots Derek Lowe to the Comerica Park bump in a game that opened as a pick against Detroit rookie Casey Crosby. The total is either nine favoring the 'over' or 9½ with an 'under' lean depending where you look.

Cleveland halted a 7-game losing skid in Detroit with a 4-2 victory in Tuesday's opener, which closed with the Indians +145 underdogs. Game 2 on Wednesday found Detroit once again significant 160 chalk with a 9-run total.

Atlanta was simply looking to dump some salary when dispatching Lowe to the Indians in an offseason deal. Lowe lost 17 games for the Braves with a 5.05 ERA last year, and was seen as just a veteran innings eater for a suspect Cleveland staff. Instead, he has elevated his game and his status to ace of the Tribe's rotation.

Cleveland is 7-4 behind Lowe with his backers up about $3.20 so far. He will be facing the Tigers for the first time in about four years, his last start vs. Detroit coming in a 2008 interleague contest while Lowe wore a Dodgers uniform.

Crosby was called up on June 1 to take the rotation slot left vacant by Doug Fister's second stint on the DL for 2012. His MLB debut came against the Yankees and certainly didn't go as either Crosby or the Tigers hoped. He was chased one out into the fourth and ultimately charged with six runs, half of them coming plateward on a Curtis Granderson bleacher bomb.

Detroit owned this matchup from 2009-11, winning 35 of the 54 clashes. The Motown Cats were also on a 13-2 run at Comerica entering Wednesday. Cleveland served notice a couple of weeks ago at home that the Tigers' overall dominance might be coming to an end with a sweep to stop a 10-game Detroit string of dubyas. It should be pointed out, however, that the Indians opened 2011 with a broom job at home before losing 12 of the final 15 meetings on the slate.

Thursday's Tip Sheet

June 6, 2012

Stats do not include results from Wednesday’s games.

Gamblers have 12 MLB games on the menu for Thursday, including a half-dozen afternoon affairs. Let’s take a look at a pair of night games between rivals in the National League East and AL East.

**Braves at Marlins**

--BetOnline.com opened Miami (31-24, +184) as a minus-135 favorite for the rubber match of this three-game set in South Florida. The total was 8 ½ ‘over’ (minus-115) on the send-out. Bettors can bring home a plus-150 return by backing the Marlins on the run line (minus 1 ½ runs, risk $100 to win $150).

--Atlanta (30-25, +245) won Tuesday’s series opener by an 11-0 count behind Tim Hudson’s five-hit shutout. The veteran righty, who improved to 4-2 on the season and continued his dominance of the Marlins, had plenty of help from the bats. Dan Uggla blasted a pair of homers against his former team en route to a 4-for-5 effort that included three runs scored and five RBIs. Jason Heyward went 3-for-4 and drew a walk.

--Mark Buehrle (5-5, 3.53 ERA) will take the mound for Ozzie Guillen’s squad. Buehrle owns a 3-1 record and 3.38 ERA in five home starts. The ‘over’ is 7-4 in the veteran left-handers 11 assignments, cashing in each of his last five outings.

--Fredi Gonzalez will give the starting nod to Mike Minor, who is 2-4 with a bloated 6.98 ERA. The lefty out of Vanderbilt is 1-2 with a 7.27 ERA in six road starts, but we should note that the Braves have prevailed in four of those six games. The ‘over’ is 4-2 in Minor’s six road starts.

--These clubs met in a brief two-game set at Turner Field on May 16 and 17. Miami won the series lid-lifter 8-4 before Atlanta responded with a 7-0 triumph behind Brandon Beachy.

--Atlanta is 10-10 versus southpaws, 18-14 on the road and 23-15 at night.

--Miami is 16-11 at home, 11-6 against lefties and 20-15 under the lights.

--The ‘over’ is 29-23-3 overall for the Braves, 7-2 in their last nine games.

--The ‘over’ is 29-24-2 overall for the Marlins, 11-3-1 in their last 15 contests.

--The first pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. Eastern.

**Rays at Yankees**

--Most spots have installed New York (30-24, -223) as a minus-150 ‘chalk’ with a total of 7 ½ ‘over’ (minus-115). The Yankees are plus-145 on the run line.

--Joe Girardi’s club captured a 7-0 win in Tuesday’s series opener as a minus-127 home favorite. Russell Martin cranked a grand slam for the Yankees and Andy Pettitte dominated again in the Bronx. Pettitte struck out 10, five in a row at one point, and gave up only two hits over 7 1/3 innings of work.

--Tampa Bay (31-24, +427) swept a three-game series from New York at The Trop in April, but it has lost three of its four games on the road against the Yankees going into Wednesday night’s matchup.

--Girardi will send LHP C.C. Sabathia (7-2, 3.68) to the bump. Sabathia is 3-1 with a 2.37 ERA in four home starts. The ‘over’ is 7-4 overall in Sabathia’s 11 outings.

--Joe Maddon will counter with another stellar southpaw of his own, David Price, who is 7-3 with a 2.44 ERA. Price is 3-2 with a 4.00 ERA in six road assignments. The ‘under’ is 6-5 overall in Price’s starts, cashing in his last four times out.

--The Yankees are 15-11 at home, 10-6 against southpaws and 21-17 at night.

--The Rays are 12-13 on the road, 8-12 versus lefties and 19-14 at night.

--The ‘under’ is 30-21 overall for the Rays, 7-2 in their last nine games.

--The ‘under’ is 31-22 overall for the Yankees, cashing in their last three games.

**B.E.’s Bonus Nuggets**

--The ‘under’ is an MLB-best 34-17-3 overall for the Pirates, who pulled to within two games of the NL-Central-leading Reds with Tuesday’s win behind A.J. Burnett. Pittsburgh has the fourth-best money tally in the majors (+760).

--Texas slugger Josh Hamilton is producing huge numbers with an MLB-best 21 homers and 58 RBIs. He and the Rangers will take aim at Oakland on Thursday afternoon at 3:35 p.m. Eastern.

--The best ‘over’ team in baseball is the Mets, who have seen it go 34-20 overall, 19-6 in their road games.

--Best fade (go-against) teams in the majors going into Wednesday’s action?
1-Tigers (-1587)
2-Padres (-1527)
3-Cubs (-1409)
4-Brewers (-1316)
5-Phillies (-945)

Thursday’s betting tips: Bosh ready for more minutes in Game 6

Weather to watch

Texas Rangers at Oakland Athletics – 13 mph winds are expected to blow out to right-centerfield.

Who’s hot

NBA: Celtics are 16-5-2 ATS in their last 23 games as a home underdog.

MLB: White Sox were 14-3 in their last 17 overall heading into Wednesday's action.

MLB: Cardinals are 9-3 in Lance Lynn's last 12 starts.

Who’s not

MLB: Indians are 0-7 in their last seven games with umpire Gerry Davis behind home plate.

MLB: The Cubs are 0-5 in Matt Garza's last five starts.

NBA: Heat are 1-10 ATS in the last 11 meetings in Boston

Key stat

2- The Boston Celtics have lost just two series in franchise history after taking a 3-2 lead (36-2).

Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Paul Konerko, Chicago White Sox – Konerko sat out his second straight game Wednesday after having a loose fragment flushed from his left wrist. He had the same procedure last season and the team hoped he would be able to play Wednesday, he but obviously needs more time. Konerko is hitting .366 with 11 homers and 33 RBI.

Game of the day

Miami Heat at Boston Celtics (+1.5, 179.5)

Notable quotable

"It's probably like a boxer. You just got to go back to your corner right now. We all just have to huddle up and lean on each other. We're the only people we can depend on right now. That can be a very powerful thing." – Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra after his club dropped a 94-90 decision at home to the Boston Celtics as a 7.5-point favorite in Game 5.

Notes and tips

The Miami Heat don’t know if Chris Bosh will start Game 6 in Boston, but they do plan to use him more than in Game 5. Bosh came off the bench Tuesday and chipped in nine points and seven rebounds in a little more than 14 minutes of work. Bosh missed nine playoff games with an abdominal strain and the Heat went 4-5 against the spread without him.

The Toronto Blue Jays' revamped lineup looked good Tuesday in a 9-5 victory over the Chicago White Sox. Brett Lawrie, batting leadoff for the first time as a professional, had three hits and scored three runs. Colby Rasmus, batting second for the fifth time, had a career-best five hits, including a two-run homer, and finished with four runs and three RBI. Rasmus is batting .500 (12-for-24) with four homers and nine RBI as the No. 2 hitter. Not surprisingly, the Blue Jays went back to the well with the same lineup Wednesday.

The Cleveland Indians activated Johnny Damon Wednesday from the Paternity List and optioned Luke Carlin to Triple-A Columbus. Damon, 38, is currently hitting .180 (16-89) with nine runs scored, one home run and five RBI in 25 games for Cleveland since being added to the roster May 1. He last appeared in a game Saturday against Minnesota and is 5-for-17 (.294) over his last five games.

Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

-- Texas-Oakland game was played in 2:04; there were 101 pitches taken in game, with 52 called strikes, 49 balls. First game in major leagues this season with more called strikes than balls.

-- Josh Beckett lost a tough 2-1 game to Baltimore, then refused to talk to the media afterwards; that should go over well in Boston.

-- Mets are five games over .500, despite allowing ten more runs than they have scored. Phillies are 28-30, but are +4 in runs scored/allowed.

-- Devils won Game 4 in Staples Center, delayed the Kings' celebration by at least three days, and sent the Stanley Cup 3,000 miles east for Game 5. Still one more game to win for LA, three more for New Jersey.

-- Spurs lost four straight after winning 20 games in a row, one of the most unusual streaks in sports history. Sad end to a terrific season. Still admire how they go about their business.

-- As happy as you are for the Thunder and their fans, you feel for people in Seattle, a city robbed of its Sonics, who were these Thunder before David Stern and his band of weasels stole the team from Seattle. Too bad.

************

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind........

13) At the beginning of the Miami-Boston series, you had to risk $1,475 to win $100 if you bet on the Heat; right now, if you bet $100 on the Heat, you’d get $120 if they can win Games 6-7.

12) Ohio Bobcats play four football games this November; on a Thursday-Wednesday-Wednesday-Friday; is their campus closed on Saturdays?

Does TV exposure help recruiting that much, even though there aren’t many fans at the games? Maybe it does, I don’t know. Maybe it helps alumni donations to have games on ESPN, even on a Tuesday night. Wish someone would investigate and let me know.

11) Jets’ coach Rex Ryan has lost 90 pounds in the last year after having weight-loss surgery, 40 of it since last season ended. Good for him.

10) Syracuse’s basketball team is actually leaving NY State twice in November this fall, once to play San Diego State in the aircraft carrier game, the other to visit Arkansas in the SEC-Big East Challenge. Wow.

9) Gio Gonzalez is doing great for Washington, but one of the pitchers the Nationals sent to Oakland, Tommy Milone, is also doing well; he has a 2.18 RA in his last three starts, even though the light-hitting A’s scored only one run in losing all three of those games. Brad Peacock and AJ Cole are both struggling in the minors this season; Oakland needs Peacock to be good, and fairly soon.

8) AL East-- Last place Red Sox are 28-28, only four games out. Baltimore is in first place. Go figure.
NL East-- Injury-riddled Phillies are 28-30, still only six games out. Seeing as Nationals are in first, Phils have to be optimistic, if they can get healthy.

7) Seattle Seahawks violated no-contact rules in their off-season workouts, so they couldn’t have any practices Wednesday-Thursday this week. Still think Pete Carroll is stealing Seattle owner Paul Allen’s money; only reason he left USC was to get out before the NCAA got there. Rules violations seem to follow him around.

6) If New Jersey is hosting a Super Bowl, why can’t Chicago-Boston-Philly-Washington? Denver? Kansas City? Seattle?

5) Kansas City Royals have played ten road series, and only lost two of them (6-2-2). Who knew?

4) How about the job Clint Hurdle is doing with the Pirates? Buccos are tied for second in NL Central, three games behind the Reds, only 2.5 games out of the Wild Card slots. They're 28-27 with pretty goood pitching.

3) New Jersey Devils are 26th NHL team to be down 3-0 in Stanley Cup Finals; of the previous 25 teams, only the ’42 Maple Leafs rallied to win the last four games.

2) Kid named Tyler Self averaged only 3.9 ppg in high school LY, but he's going to be on the Kansas Jayhawks for the next four years. How do I know this? Tyler's dad is Bill Self, the Kansas coach. Tyler is a 6-2 walk-on guard who will practice hard and get to spend a lot of time with his dad, and that is pretty cool in itself.

1) Phil Mickelson needs to toughen up; he texted Tim Finchem, PGA Tour commissioner, from the 6th fairway at Muirfield last week, whining because people were taking cellphone pics of him while he was playing. Then he withdrew after the first round, after shooting 79. Too freakin’ bad.

Mickelson likes to present himself as a man of the people, but he does commercials for Exxon-Mobil, the biggest scumbags/thieves in America, and now he whines because he can’t hit a ball that’s standing still because some old lady is Ohio is taking his picture with her cellphone.

Baseball players have to hit pitches thrown 95 mph, with 40,000 fans screaming at them. Get some earplugs and hit the ball.

Public opinion: Game 6 bettors leaning toward over

Odds and consensus current as of 8 p.m. ET, Wednesday.

NBA:

Miami Heat at Boston Celtics (+1.5, 179.5)

The Miami Heat had their chance to take control of the Eastern Conference finals but couldn’t get it done at home in Game 5. Now they have to take care of business in Boston to avoid elimination. The numbers aren’t in Heat bettors’ favor. Miami is 1-10 against the spread in its last 11 trips to Boston. With the over cashing in each of the last four meetings between the two teams, that’s where most bettors are looking.

Consensus: Over, 63 percent

MLB:

St. Louis Cardinals at Houston Astros (-155, 8.5)

The St. Louis Cardinals haven’t hit their stride yet and had won just once in seven games heading into Wednesday’s date with Houston. Still, starter Lance Lynn has been solid all year and St. Louis is producing 5.07 runs per game (fourth in the bigs).

Consensus: Cardinals, 67 percent

Thursday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Streaking

R.A. Dickey, New York Mets (8-1, 2.69 ERA)

The Mets have won each of Dickey’s last six starts and he has been next to unhittable over the last three, allowing only one run. He fired a complete-game shutout in his last turn in the rotation giving up seven hits while striking out nine and walking none. He now has 70 strikeouts in 73 2/3 innings and with his knuckler dancing, has walked only 17 this season.

Mike Leake, Cincinnati Reds (2-5, 4.95 ERA)

It wasn’t long ago Leake was a frequent resident of the Slumping section, but he’s turning it around. The Reds lost five of his first six starts before rebounding to win each of his last four trips to the mound. He’s allowed only six runs over that span while striking out 22 and serving up just a single home run.

Slumping

Henderson Alvarez, Toronto Blue Jays (3-5, 3.75 ERA)

Since a solid stretch from the end of April to the middle of May, hitters have been all over Alvarez. He has allowed at least eight hits in four consecutive outings and has yielded 14 earned runs and four home runs over his three most recent trips to the hill. Even though his strikeout numbers are down this year, he still has that heavy 95 mph sinker and is among the league leaders in ground-ball outs.

Mike Minor, Atlanta Braves (2-4, 6.98 ERA)

Minor’s last turn in the rotation was skipped thanks to a rainout last week and the club hopes the time off served him well. He has allowed at least four runs in his last six outings and served up 12 homers during that span. The lefty hasn’t won a start since April 19.
