Back in 2003, Nick Newlife wagered £1,520 on Roger Federer to win at least seven Wimbledon singles titles. Newlife, of Oxford, was 53 years old at the time he made the bet, which carried odds of 66-to-1.
This year’s Wimbledon championship begins Monday, and Federer will try to capture his seventh title, meaning Newlife stands to make a hefty chunk of money if Federer can pull it off.

Newlife passed away in February of 2009.
But before his death, Newlife arranged to have any proceeds from the outstanding bet go to Oxfam International, a charity that works with 98 countries across the world to try and find solutions to poverty and injustice.
That means if Federer wins, the charity would receive a payout of £101,840. The bet is only valid if Federer, 30, wins prior to 2019.
“Legacies amount to 10 percent of our total income from individuals, so they’re essential to us,” Stuart Fowkes, from Oxfam, told the London Evening Standard. “And as this case proves, they can come in all shapes and sizes.”
Federer is listed at 5-to-1 to win Wimbledon, behind only Novak Djokovic and Rafa Nadal.
