Windshield mounts illegal in 28 states?

June 15, 2012 By Rich Owings 6 Comments
In a surprising (and questionable) bit of gumshoe work, a POI Factory contributor has concluded that windshield mounts are illegal in 28 states and six Canadian provinces.

According to the article, windshield mounting is against the law in the states shown in red, and limited placement is allowed in specific windshield zones in the states in yellow. Green should mean you’re good to go, but I’d take it all with a grain of salt. The commenters on one site linking to the post found quite a few errors and/or misinterpretations. If you have questions, I’d advise you to follow the links below and read the law for yourself.
As for me, I prefer friction/dashboard mounts
ir
. While they can still be placed in such a way as to block your view, technically they aren’t attached!
Key
Yes - GPS receivers can be mounted on the windshield. This is either through being specifically mentioned as being exempt from a regulation, or through the law not specifically mentioning GPS receivers at all while mentioning other items as being prohibited. See the appropriate law for details.
Yes (Limited) - As “Yes” above, but the law limits the location where the receiver may be mounted, usually at the bottom of the windshield in a 5″ square on the driver’s side or a 7″ square on the passenger’s side. See the appropriate law for details.
No - GPS receivers may not be mounted on the windshield. This is generally because of a mention of “non-transparent material” not being allowed on the windshield. A GPS mount would fall under this definition. See the appropriate law for details.

Not really that big of a deal. I mean how often do you really use the GPS in your car if you dont deliver food or products for a living.

At least 80% of the public doesnt really use a GPS receiver more than once per month

Do you deliver pizza for a living?

I mean how do you know how to get to the places that you go daily?

It's not about how often you use it. Personally I had no idea that it was illegal to mount it to your windshield in most states. From now on I'll leave it on the seat and have to look down at it, that sounds safer !

most of the laws are written in a way that you cannot attach anything to the windshield to impair your view of the highway.

I could defend myself in court by saying my GPS is similar to my rearview mirror which is also attached to the windshield. They both enhance my view of the highway, each in their own way.

If you must know, I have 3 teenage kids that are all involved in sports and other activities. I'm constantly driving them to meets and things.
The GPS is an invaluable time saver.

This is bullshit!

says the man from Virginia....the only state where radar detectors are illegal !

Page 4 - Legal issues

The use of a radar detector in a passenger vehicle is legal in all states with the exception of Virginia, Washington DC. and on military bases.
Radar detectors are illegal in all commercial vehicles weighing over 10,000 pounds
In Canada, the only three provinces that allow their use are Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan.

I was under the impression that radar detectors are illegal in many states, and if you're ever pulled over and using one, it could be confiscated.

as far as GPS goes, I have to use mine all the time, but I don't have it attached to anything. It usually sits in my lap or on the console.

According to PO69, you must be a pizza delivery person.

My wife got a ticket for it in Va. Pulled over for speeding and had a radar detector in use. The cop said your choice, speeding ticket or ticket for the detector.....took the non-moving violation.

VA cops are the worst especially in NOVA. I have no idea what it is but they are nazis when it comes to petty traffic offenses. Heaven help you if you have a car with out of state tags for more than a couple of days they will bang you for not getting registered and paying that damn yearly car tax. I used to see the cops bumper lock a car entering my apartment garage to sweep the cars in a private apartment just to check if there were any out of state tags so they could write tickets!

Tpants, I live here and you are right! Fortunately, I'm military so I still have my Florida tags. They do sweeps through apartment complexes parking garages. It's unreal! The "personal property tax" is a load of shit! You paid tax on it when you bought it!
