Chicago Cubs Host Mets At Windy Wrigley Field

The Boston Red Sox finishing up a 3-game set vs. the Toronto Blue Jays highlights an interesting Hump Day in Major League Baseball. Note this is an early afternoon affair with a 1:35 p.m. (ET) first pitch from Fenway Park.

We first have some Tuesday night updates with the Los Angeles Angels 135 road favorites at the Baltimore Orioles after opening the Halos opened as $1.70 favorites. The total is 8½-runs on the Don Best odds screen.

The Angels are 7-3 in their last 10 games and could end up pushing Texas in the AL West (currently 4½-games back). C.J. Wilson (8-4, 2.44 ERA) has a 1.65 ERA in June with the team winning his last six outings. He is 5-2 in his nine road starts (+5.4 units).

Brian Matusz (5-8, 5.00 ERA) goes for the O’s. He has lost his last three starts, giving up 11 earned runs over 12 1/3 innings. However, Don Best MLB analyst Kenny White has examined his sabermetrics and believes Matusz has had some bad luck and should see more balls start to hit towards his fielders.

The Wednesday look begins with the Cubs and Mets from Wrigley Field. Don Best is sending out New York as a 120 road favorite. White reports that the wind should be blowing out 10-15 mph to center and gusting up to 30. Temps should also be in the low 90s and the total could open at a big 11½-12 because of these factors.

Jonathon Niese (5-3, 3.75 ERA) is on the bump for the Mets. He beat the Yankees last Friday (two earned runs over 6 1/3 innings) and the 25-year-old lefty has had better control with only four walks over 26 1/3 innings in June (2.05 ERA).

Opposing pitcher Jeff Samardzija gave up five earned runs over five innings last Friday at Arizona. He is 3-2 with a 2.36 ERA in six home starts and has a dominating 95 mph fastball. His lineup could also get a boost with the Cubs debut of first baseman Anthony Rizzo.

Getting back to the Red Sox and Blue Jays, Boston is a 140 favorite with a total of 10. Toronto will start Ricky Romero, one of the luckiest pitchers in the league at 8-1 despite a 4.34 ERA. He’s been getting great run support at 9.3 runs per game in his last seven starts.

Boston is 9-3 in its last 12 games even after losing the series opener on Monday (9-6). The Tuesday result is still pending. Jon Lester (4-5, 4.48 ERA) is a frustrated pitcher right now, but he historically starts slow before heating up in June, July and August.

Lester has a 3.71 ERA this June in four starts, but Boston has just one win to show for it in scoring a total of 14 runs.

White sees Lester getting back on track on Wednesday with a 10-5 (3.08 ERA) lifetime mark against Toronto. His one start against them this year came North of the Border in April, three earned runs over eight innings in a 3-1 defeat.

Hot and Not

June 25, 2012

The 2012 Interleague slate has wrapped and the American League once again came out on top – what a shocker! Only two weeks remain until the All-Star break, and we’ll be looking to add to our season-long bankroll by backing and fading the following hot and cold teams.

Money-Makers

Arizona Diamondbacks (5-1, $340): After dropping back-to-back Interleague series to the AL West heavyweight Rangers and Angels last week, manager Kirk Gibson’s squad got healthy this past week by winning both of their home series against Seattle and Chicago; the sweep of the Cubs was the Snakes’ second series sweep in the month of June. In doing so, the D-Backs moved to within 5 1/2-games of the front-running Los Angeles Dodgers and the team looks to be on the up and up as MLB bettors approach the halfway mark of the regular season.

On The Docket: Arizona will look to continue its upwards ascension within the division on the road this week in Atlanta and Milwaukee where Justin Upton and his mates will attempt to improve upon their 17-18 ($132) record away from the desert.

Boston Red Sox (5-1, $310): Kevin Youkilis has been a mainstay at the hot corner in Beantown for close to a decade, but upper management decided to part ways with the beloved member of previous World Series teams on Sunday when they shipped him to the South Side of Chicago. That paves the way for rookie Will Middlebrooks, whose done nothing but rake since getting the call up to the bigs. The BoSox mashed their way to an impressive 5-1 tally this past week against the NL East representative Marlins and Braves, and because of it, only sit 5 1/2-games back in the crowded AL East standings.

On The Docket: Boston will attempt to claw over the .500 mark at home (19-20, -$768) with three set to go with Toronto before heading west to improve upon its 19-14 ($406) road record against the Mariners.

Oakland A’s (4-2, $252): Though manager Bob Melvin’s squad dropped two of three to the intrastate rival San Francisco Giants in Interleague play over the weekend, his troops let it be known that the AL West wasn’t just a two-team race after it swept the Halos and limited their potent offense to a combined two runs earlier in the week. The A’s have amped up their offensive production in the month of June, averaging 5.3 runs per game, and if they can continue to succeed from a pitching perspective (#9 with a 3.62 ERA), they just might be able to make a run at the AL West pennant if everything continues to line up perfectly.

On The Docket: It’s back to divisional play for the A’s this week with a three-game set slated at Safeco against the Mariners before heading to Arlington to battle the Rangers where they’ve won just two of their L/10 visits.

Honorable Mentions: Texas Rangers (5-1, $236), New York Mets (4-2, $230), Pittsburgh Pirates (4-2, $209), St. Louis Cardinals (4-2, $206), Cleveland Indians (4-2, $193), Atlanta Braves (3-3, $147), Los Angeles Angels (4-2, $128)

Money-Burners

Cincinnati Reds (1-5, -$523): What on god’s green earth is going on in Cincinnati? The Reds had all the mojo in the world backing them heading into last week’s Interleague matchups with the AL Central Indians and Twins, but manager Dusty Baker’s squad dropped five of the six matchups and now finds the Pirates and Cardinals both breathing down their necks for division supremacy. Aroldis Chapman played a role in two of the defeats after failing to close out either of his save opportunities; he must rediscover his lights out nature if the Reds are to remain atop the NL Central standings.

On The Docket: The Reds will attempt to reverse course Monday night in their series opener with the division rival Milwaukee Brewers before hitting the road for the west coast where they’ll put their 18-17 road record on the line against the hard charging Giants.

Miami Marlins (1-5, -$461): The month of July can’t come soon enough for manager Ozzie Guillen’s Marlins, who now check in an absurd 5-16 in June, which has equated to a bankroll bursting -$1,260 for their investing supporters. Miami got out to a slow start in April only to bounce back strong in May. If the Fish are to have any shot of competing in the highly competitive NL East, their “every other month” nature best pick back up once the calendar turns over!

On The Docket: The Marlins will take to their home field against the Cardinals and Phillies over the course of the next week, but that’s hardly an advantage for them considering they’ve dropped 18 of their 38 overall games played in their brand new digs (-$923).

Los Angeles Dodgers (1-5, -$392): It was an eye opener to see the Dodgers alternate wins and losses in each of their six home games last week considering they’ve been at their best in front of the hometown faithful (24-12, $874), so it really came as no surprise to see them struggle on the road this past week. That said, Matt Kemp can’t get back into the starting lineup soon enough with LA combining to score just 13 runs versus the A’s and Angels’ respective pitching staffs. Their lead atop the NL West has now been trimmed down to just three games with both the Giants and Diamondbacks charging hard!

On The Docket: The Dodgers will begin a huge series with San Francisco Monday that could see their lead all but evaporate. They’ll then hit the east coast to close out the week with the Mets and hope to avoid falling under .500 as visitors (19-18, $251).

Dishonorable Mentions: San Diego Padres (2-4, -$200), Philadelphia Phillies (3-3, -$154), Chicago Cubs (2-4, -$91), Houston Astros (3-3, -$14), Colorado Rockies (2-4, $10)

Oswalt looks to pitch Rangers past Tigers

DETROIT TIGERS (36-38)

at TEXAS RANGERS (46-29)

First pitch: Wednesday, 8:05 p.m. EDT
Line: Texas -155, Detroit +145, Total: 10

The Rangers will host the Tigers for the rubber match of a three-game set Wednesday night.

This start represents Roy Oswalt’s second of the season for the Rangers after he allowed one run in 6.2 innings in his debut last week. He gave up nine hits, but walked only one and struck out six. He faces Doug Fister who is in the midst of an excellent season, sporting a 2.72 ERA and 1.25 WHIP. Fister has started seven times against the Rangers in his career with a 4.08 ERA and 1.21 WHIP, logging a 3-3 record He has won both of his last two starts against the Rangers, however, including in the playoffs last year when he tossed 7.1 innings and allowed just two runs. Oswalt, despite being quite the veteran, has never faced the Tigers in his career. And, he will face a tough lineup that features Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder, with Cabrera registering a .992 OPS and 23 RBI in 20 career games in Arlington. Although the Rangers are understandably favored, the lines like them too much in this game. Take DETROIT as the heavy underdog to take the game and the series.

This FoxSheets trend also favors the Tigers:

TEXAS is 7-13 (35.0%, -10.5 Units) against the money line vs. an AL starting pitcher whose ERA is 3.50 or better this season. The average score was TEXAS 5.0, OPPONENT 5.6 - (Rating = 1*).

Detroit’s bullpen could prove to be important in this game as Fister averages fewer than six innings per start. On the season, Tigers relievers have a 3.75 ERA and 1.33 WHIP with 220 strikeouts in 223.1 innings. Missing bats could be key against the potent Texas lineup. Fister was roughed up three times ago, yielding six runs in five innings to the Red Sox, but has recovered since then, allowing just two earned in 12 innings in his last two starts with 13 K’s and just two walks. He is more trustworthy at this point than Oswalt. Take the underdog.

Oswalt earned a win his first time out, but had to work out of some dangerous situations, allowing 10 base runners over the course of six innings. The good news is how good his supporting cast is with a bullpen that has a 2.95 ERA on the season and 1.04 WHIP. Unfortunately, that ERA rises to 3.86 in Arlington. And, even if he gets roughed up a little, the Texas offense leads baseball in nearly every major category, including runs (395), batting average (.282) and OPS (.802). The Rangers have also won nine of the past 14 meetings between these clubs in Arlington. But, as heavy favorites, play against.

Wednesday’s betting tips: Utley set to return for Phillies?

Weather to watch

Cincinnati Reds at San Francisco Giants – 14 mph winds expected to blow out to centerfield.

Who’s hot

MLB: Over is 25-12-1 in Homer Bailey's last 38 starts for Cincinnati.

MLB: Home team is 36-16 in Tony Randazzo’s last 52 games behind home plate. He's set to work Wednesday's Rays-Royals matchup in K.C.

MLB: Athletics are 10-3 in their last 13 overall.

WNBA: Minnesota Lynx are 17-6 ATS in their last 23 home games.

Who’s not

MLB: Mets are 3-7 in Jon Niese’s last 10 road starts.

MLB: Dodgers are 5-11 in the last 16 meetings in San Francisco.

MLB: Pirates are 6-20 in the last 26 meetings in Philadelphia.

WNBA: Chicago Sky are 1-5 ATS in their last six home games.

Key stat

2,623 - Spain have completed 2623 passes so far at Euro 2012, more than double as many as Portugal (1159). With the club’s patient ball-possession tactics, Spain has won its last six knockout games at major tournaments, outscoring the opposition 7-0.

Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Candice Dupree, Phoenix Mercury – Dupree is questionable for Wednesday’s game with a left knee contusion and she may not be the only member of the Mercury on the sideline. Phoenix has had to play its last two games with just eight dressed players thanks to other injuries to backup center Nakia Sanford, All-Star Diana Taurasi and forward Penny Taylor.

Game of the day

Portugal +320 vs. Spain -125, Draw +225

Notable quotable

"You've got to be able to walk and talk winning. Our guys are walking better. They're talking better. They believe in things they can't see, but there has been some increments of tangible evidence. We can play this game." Manager Clint Hurdle on the play of his Pittsburgh Pirates this season. The Pirates went into Tuesday’s action two games off the pace in the NL Central while earning 10.78 units for their supporters.

Notes and tips

Portugal will be without striker Helder Postiga Wednesday after he suffered a hamstring injury in the club’s 1-0 win over Czech Republic. Hugo Almeida came on for him and is expected to be in the starting 11 Wednesday.

The Texas Rangers placed starting pitcher Colby Lewis on the 15-day disabled list on Tuesday because of tendinitis in his right forearm. Lewis is one of four Rangers pitchers on the DL. The others are Derek Holland (elbow fatigue), Neftali Feliz (elbow inflammation), and Alexi Ogando (groin). Lewis is 6-6 with a 3.51 ERA this season. In his most recent start on Saturday, he gave up eight runs on 12 hits, both season-highs, in four innings.

Philadelphia Phillies second baseman Chase Utley could return to the lineup as early as Wednesday. He has been out of the lineup since the beginning of the season with cartilage degeneration in his left knee and is expected to make his final rehab start for Lehigh Valley Tuesday before possibly joining the Phillies Wednesday. "There are some people who have given up on this team," he told reporters. "I'll be the first one to tell you that I definitely have not given up on myself and our guys have not given up on this year.”

A four-team playoff to determine a national champion in college football will become a reality in the 2014 season after an oversight committee of university presidents on Tuesday approved the conference commissioners proposal in Washington. The plan involves a 12-year deal, so this format will be in place though the 2025 season.

The Houston Rockets made another move designed to ultimately acquire a franchise building block, sending small forward Chase Budinger to the Minnesota Timberwolves for the 18th overall pick in Thursday's draft. The Rockets are loading up on assets with a goal of acquiring Dwight Howard from the Orlando Magic.

Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

-- Instead of firing managers, why don't two struggling teams just trade managers? Say, Jim Tracy to Miami for Ozzie Guillen. Would save $$$.

-- Marlins lost 17 of their last 20 games and look like a dead team.

-- Albert Pujols has 34 RBI in his last 38 games. Good hitters just hit.

-- 12,411 loyalists saw the A's-Mariners game at Safeco. Total of six runs were scored in the first two series games. Bad hitters don't hit.

-- Its an understatement to say Dodgers miss Matt Kemp; they're 1-7 in last eight games- their NL West lead is down to a single game.

-- Hard to believe baseball won't go to some kind of a replay challenge system next season. Everything but balls and strikes. Its time.

************

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud.........

13) On May 2, AJ Burnett gave up 12 runs/12 hits in 2.2 forgettable innings in St Louis; in nine starts since then, he is 7-0, 1.94 and is a shoo-in for the All-Star Game. Pittsburgh is 38-35 and in the playoff hunt. They’ll need to hit better to make the playoffs.

12) Not sure why, but the Giants-Nationals game on July 4 is an 11am first pitch, which makes it 8am first pitch for everyone watching out west. Washington could be imitating the Red Sox, who play an 11am home game every Patriots’ Day, a state holiday in Massachusetts.

11) Offense is down, which means defense needs to be up, since runs are at a premium now; haven’t been real impressed from what I’ve seen of Dodger SS Dee Gordon, who too often tries for the spectacular play instead of the simple one. He’s very young, but the Dodgers are in first place. To win a championship, you definitely need solid defense up the middle.

On the other hand, have been very impressed by the Simmons kid who is the new shortstop in Atlanta. Very solid defensively.

10) Toronto Blue Jays’ pitchers have been decimated by injury, and when I say decimated I mean they just signed 49-year old Jamie Moyer to a minor league contract. Apparently Dave Stieb and Jerry Garvin weren’t available. Signing Moyer is the personification of desperation.

9) Seth Smith’s homer was only run in Oakland’s 1-0 win Monday night; last time the A’s won 1-0 with a homer the only run was 9/12/04, when Erubiel Durazo homered for the Green and Gold.

8) LSU football coach Les Miles was in Omaha with his daughter for the Olympic swimming trials; he wound up behind the plate for the last game of the College World Series, tweeting his support for SEC rival South Carolina. Arizona wound up unseating the two-time champ Gamecocks. Miles is one of my heroes; a quirky, enthusiastic guy.

7) Weird situation in Chapel Hill, where a QB named Drew Davis will walk-on and try to make the Tar Heels’ squad. Drew is Butch Davis’ son. UNC fired Butch Davis last year after all kinds of NCAA-type violations hit the fan. Carolina's new coach is Larry Fedora, the old Southern Miss coach.

6) Houston Rockets traded Chase Budinger to Minnesota for the 18th pick in Thursday’s draft, as they try and stockpile 1st-round picks in hopes of landing Dwight Howard in a blockbuster trade. Not sure what good Houston’s first-round picks are if they get Howard and have a good team.

5) Time flies; hard to believe this will be Houston WR Andre Johnson’s 10th year in the NFL already. Texans are expected to be very good this season. First NFL exhibition game is only 40 days away.

4) People at Make-a-Wish Foundation say pro wrestler Jon Cena is most generous with his time, having granted over 300 wishes so far. Apparently a week doesn’t go by without Cena brightening the day of some sick child. Good for him.

3) If you know someone who's a Portland Trailblazer fan and they seem a little crabby this week, keep in mind the NBA Draft is Thursday and bad things have happened to Portland at draft time. They once took Sam Bowie ahead of Michsel Jordan, and Greg Oden over Kevin Durant. Whoops.

2) Now that college football is finally going to have a playoff, voices will get loud for football players to get paid. Problem with that is this: if you pay male athletes, the females will wrap themselves in Title IX and demand to get paid too, even though no one gives a rat's ass about watching any of their sports. Hell, no one watches most of the men's sports.

A free college education should be enough, but this playoff is going to free up a boatload of money, and money tend$ to make people greedy.

1) If the baseball playoffs started Wednesday morning, these would be the 10 teams involved:
NL: Nationals-Reds-Dodgers; (Atlanta-San Francisco)
AL: Bronx-White Sox-Rangers; (Baltimore-Angels)

Public opinion: Bettors back Oswalt in his second start

Public consensus percentages and odds current as of 8 p.m. ET, Tuesday.

MLB:

Detroit Tigers at Texas Rangers (-150, N/A)

Early bettors are lining up to support Roy Oswalt in his second start with the Rangers. He threw 6 2/3 solid innings in his debut with Texas, allowing one run on nine hits while striking out six and walking one in a 4-1 win over Colorado. The Rangers had also won four of their last five home games against the Tigers heading into Tuesday’s action.

Consensus: Rangers, 68 percent

WNBA:

Indiana Fever at Chicago Sky (-2.5, 144.5)

After stringing together six straight wins, the Chicago Sky have lost two in a row as they get set to host Indiana. The Sky are just 1-3 against the spread at home this season and the Fever have covered in five of the last six meetings between the two teams. Still, bettors are coming in on the home team with this short line.

Consensus: Sky, 60 percent

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Wednesday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Streaking

James McDonald, Pittsburgh Pirates (6-3, 2.19 ERA)

McDonald is coming off the first complete game of his career, allowing six hits and one earned run while striking out five Minnesota Twins in a 9-1 blowout win. He has helped Pittsburgh to victories in four of his last five starts, yielding fewer than three runs in each of those efforts. The Pirates average just 3.6 runs in his starts this year.

Jason Hammel, Baltimore Orioles (8-2, 2.61 ERA)

Hammel tied a career-high 10 strikeouts in a 2-1 win over Washington last week. He heads into Wednesday’s date with the Angels without allowing an earned run in 19 innings and has helped the Orioles win six of his last seven trips to the hill. He faces off against an equally hot Jered Weaver.

Slumping

Jeff Samardzija, Chicago Cubs (5-6, 4.34 ERA)

Apart from a couple of pitches, Samardzija was pretty pleased with his last outing, a 6-1 loss to the Diamondbacks. He lasted five innings and gave up five runs, but four of those came on a two-run homer and a two-run double. The big righty now has just one win in his last seven starts.

Josh Outman, Colorado Rockies (0-3, 8.64 ERA)

Outman has allowed at least four runs in four of his five starts and gave up five runs in 4 2/3 innings in a no-decision against Texas. He fired 92 pitches in that one, the most he has thrown in a start all year. Outman owns a 9.00 ERA and has allowed four homers in his last three.
