Cueto & Reds Battle Giants In San Francisco

The San Francisco Giants and Cincinnati Reds are gearing up for a pitcher’s duel on Thursday night and the oddsmakers have adjusted the total accordingly.

An update for Wednesday night is first on the agenda. Miami is a 135 home favorite over St. Louis with Anibal Sanchez facing Joe Kelly. The total on the Don Best odds screen is nine runs.

St. Louis’ Kelly (1-0, 3.52 ERA) is making just his fourth career start, but is coming off his first MLB win over Kansas City. The 24-year-old was a high draft pick and has a 94 mph fastball, but wasn’t striking out a lot of guys at Triple-A (5.60 per nine innings) and is at 4.70 since being called up.

Sanchez (3-6, 3.94 ERA) has been unlucky with a high BABIP (batting average on balls in play). His numbers in June can only be partially blamed for that with 20 earned runs over 22 1/3 innings (8.06 ERA).

Don Best MLB analyst Kenny White likes Sanchez’s stuff and believes he will turn it around. The Miami offense scored 16 total runs on Sunday and Monday after really struggling previously. The ‘over’ is 24-13-3 in Marlins’ home games this year, scoring 4.1 runs per game vs. 3.35 away.

Thursday has Arizona at Atlanta. The Braves are 145 favorites with a total of nine. Arizona’s Trevor Bauer makes his MLB debut as the third pick overall in the draft last year. He was an incredible 11-1 in Triple-A with 116 strikeouts in 93 innings.

Don Best’s White loves Bauer’s electric stuff and he has at least six different pitches. The UCLA alum projects well to this level and the team will also get back shortstop Stephen Drew into the lineup following his rehab from last season's nasty ankle injury.

Jair Jurrjens (1-2, 6.75 ERA) will go for the home team. He had a nice performance at Boston last time out (one earned run over 7 2/3 innings) after 10 Triple-A starts. He was 13-6 with a 2.96 ERA last year, so the talent is there, although he is still something of a wild-card.

Also on Thursday is Cincinnati at San Francisco. The pitching matchup is Johnny Cueto against Madison Bumgarner and San Fran is a 125 favorite with a very low total of six.

Cueto (9-3, 2.21 ERA) had nine strikeouts and seven shutout innings against the Twins last game. He is 4-0 with a 1.47 ERA during June and his ERA is a dominating 2.27 over the last two seasons.

Bumgarner (9-4, 3.10 ERA) allowed 11 hits over six innings at Oakland last start, but still got the win in the 9-8 final. His ERA was around the same last year (3.21), but he went only 13-13. He is benefiting from much better run support this season and he’ll keep winning if the bats stay strong.

Slipping Dodgers Face Dickey & Mets On Friday

Several top-notch pitching matchups take place Friday, perhaps none bigger than Justin Verlander battling David Price as the Detroit Tigers and Tampa Bay Rays continue their series at Tropicana Field.

Detroit has floundered all season after being the chalkiest of picks to win a division with a -650 price in the AL Central in early April. The Tigers began this series three games under .500 (36-39), but well within striking distance of the Chicago White Sox with only a 4-game deficit in the standings.

Tampa Bay has been in a bit of a funk as well and trailed the New York Yankees by 6.5 games in the AL East after leading the division less than three weeks ago. The Rays have dropped 10 of their last 15 since June 10 when they held a slim half-game advantage in the AL East.

The Rays and Tigers opened the 4-game series on Thursday night in a game that was still pending and listed Tampa Bay as a 120 home favorite with a 7½-run total. Max Scherzer was scheduled to start for Detroit opposite Tampa's James Shields.

Friday's second game will get underway at 7:10 p.m. (ET), and the early bird lines priced Verlander at -115 with a 7-run total leaning 25 cents to the 'under.'

Verlander has pitched the Tigers into the winner's circle each of his last four assignments, including a complete-game victory at Pittsburgh last Sunday. He was vying for a complete-game shutout when he faced the Rays in Detroit on April 11, but couldn't pull it off as Tampa Bay rallied for four runs in the top of the ninth after Verlander took a 2-0 lead into the final frame.

The Tigers were $1.65 favorites in that contest, and have been favored in each of Verlander's 16 starts. If the opening number for Friday holds, it will be the shortest price Detroit backers have been asked to lay in a Verlander outing.

Price picked up his 10th win of the campaign last Sunday in Philadelphia, getting some help from his bullpen in a 3-2 Tampa Bay triumph as a slight underdog. The southpaw out of Vanderbilt has notched the dubya in four of his last five starts and is 3-1 in four career efforts vs. Detroit with a 2.36 ERA.

In the April series at Comerica Park, the Tigers won two of the three games with the 'under' cashing twice to go with one 'push.' Detroit won three of the four played in St. Pete a season ago, the 'under' a winner three times along with a 'push' on a 7-run total in a game that Verlander started and won.

Dickey Takes Crack At Offensively-Challenged Dodgers
Another key 4-game set cranks up Thursday when the New York Mets continue their weeklong trip with a stop in Los Angeles to face the Dodgers. Chris Young was in line to take the bump for the Metropolitans opposite LA's Chris Capuano, and the Dodgers were 125 favorites on the Don Best odds screen that also listed a 7-run total priced to the 'under.'

The Mets arrived in Tinseltown off a 17-1 laugher at the Chicago Cubs' expense on Wednesday. The victory stopped a 4-game skid for New York and left the club third in the NL East, 4.5-games south of the front-running Washington Nationals.

The Dodgers were beginning this series on a 1-8 slide and in the throes of a 4-game losing streak after being swept by the Giants. Los Angeles couldn't muster a single run in the broom job at San Francisco who now shares the NL West lead with the struggling Dodgers.

Friday's second game will begin at 10:10 p.m. (ET) and features an initial mound duel between New York's RA Dickey and LA's Aaron Harang. The Mets opened as 115 favorites and the scoreboard hurdle was set at 6½.

Dickey had been the hottest arm in the game before running into the Yankees last Sunday. The knuckleballer allowed five runs in six frames, but didn't factor into the decision that went to the Yanks by a 6-5 count. The Mets had won his previous nine starts, and are 5-2 behind Dickey on the road thus far in 2012.

This will only be Harang's sixth appearance at Chavez Ravine with 10 of his 15 starts to date coming on the road. The Dodgers are 3-2 at home with Harang on the bump, and his ERA is more than two runs lower in LA (2.51) than away from home (4.58).

The teams are meeting for the first time in 2012 after New York won five of the seven clashes last season. The Mets were 3-1 in LA, the only Dodgers win coming when Clayton Kershaw took on New York's Dillon Gee. Those two hurlers are currently scheduled to meet Sunday night in the series finale.

Giants seek 4th straight shutout win Thursday

CINCINNATI REDS (41-33)

at SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS (43-33)

First pitch: Thursday, 10:15 p.m. EDT
Line: San Francisco -115, Cincinnati +105, Total: 6½

Two red-hot pitchers, Johnny Cueto and Madison Bumgarner, collide when Cincinnati opens a four-game set in San Francisco on Thursday night.

The Giants pitching was unbelievable in their just-completed, three-game sweep of the Dodgers, posting three straight shutouts, 8-0, 2-0 and 3-0. That gives them five wins in the past six games, and this pitching dominance doesn’t bode well for the Reds, who are just 3-6 in their past three series, surpassing four runs just twice in this span. However, Cueto doesn’t need a whole lot of run support by the way he’s dominated in his past three outings (25 IP, 2 ER, 24 K, 2 BB). Bumgarner is coming off a poor outing in Oakland (6 IP, 11 H, 4 ER), but he’s been money at AT&T Park this season (2.27 ERA, 0.99 WHIP), fanning 39 and walking just three in these 43.2 home innings. With two excellent arms and suspect offenses, the best play here is the UNDER which is 24-12 in San Francisco this year, as the Giants have scored just 3.4 runs per game while visitors have a paltry 2.7 runs per game.

This three-star FoxSheets trend also favors the Under:

SAN FRANCISCO is 34-12 UNDER (73.9%, +19.9 Units) at home when the money line is +125 to -125 over the last 2 seasons. The average score was SAN FRANCISCO 2.6, OPPONENT 2.9 - (Rating = 3*).

Cueto (9-3, 2.21 ERA, 1.11 WHIP) absolutely owned the Giants last season, throwing 16 shutout innings over two starts, giving up just seven hits and three walks, while fanning 14 batters. He’s helped the Reds post a 10-7 record in the past three years against Thursday’s foe. Cueto has also been one of the best road warriors in baseball in 2012, going 4-2 with a 2.15 ERA and 1.20 WHIP. Cincinnati is 11-4 in his 15 starts this season with some of the credit going to the strong bullpen that has a 2.74 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 234 K in 206.2 IP. Reds relievers have been even more productive on the road (2.60 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 104 K in 90 IP). One player that won’t likely be able to help Cueto is 2B Brandon Phillips who was hit in the head by a forearm while covering second base on Wednesday. He was tested for a concussion and will probably sit on Thursday as a precaution. Phillips has a .359 BA, 4 HR and 15 RBI in his past 16 games.

Bumgarner (9-4, 3.10 ERA, 1.12 WHIP) has had mixed results in his three lifetime outings versus Cincinnati. In 2010, the Reds lit him up for eight runs (7 ER) and three homers in just 2.2 innings. But last season, he limited them to just one run in seven innings at home before pitching poorly in Cincinnati seven weeks later (4 IP, 7 R, 5 ER). The Giants are 10-5 when Bumgarner takes the mound this year, including a 5-1 record at home. He has won four straight decisions, and that streak has been aided by a bullpen that has a strong 3.48 ERA, saving 30-of-36 chances. These numbers are even more phenomenal at AT&T Park: 2.29 ERA, 1.07 WHIP, 17 saves, one blown save.

Thursday’s betting tips: D-Backs’ top SP prospect makes MLB debut

Weather to watch

Cincinnati Reds at San Francisco Giants – 12 mph winds are expected to blow out to centerfield.

Who’s hot

MLB: Under is 20-8 in Yankees last 28 games as a home favorite.

MLB: Athletics are 10-4 in their last 14 overall.

WNBA: Silver Stars are 6-1 ATS in their last eight games overall.

Who’s not

MLB: Padres are 5-23 in their last 28 road games vs. a team with a winning home record.

MLB: Rockies are 4-15 in their last 19 overall.

WNBA: Sparks are 0-4 ATS in their last four road games.

Key stat

2 – Candace Parker scored just two points in the Los Angeles Sparks’ loss to Tulsa Tuesday. The former MVP has scored only 20 points in two games since coming back from a knee injury as the Sparks get set to play their eighth game in 14 days Thursday against San Antonio.

Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

CC Sabathia, New York Yankees - Sabathia was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left adductor muscle. Yankees manager Joe Girardi said Sabathia is likely to return after the All-Star break and would miss only two starts. Sabathia (9-3, 3.55 ERA) felt pain in his groin area during his last start but didn't inform the team until Tuesday's bullpen session. Freddy Garcia will fill his spot in the rotation, making his first start Friday.

Game of the day

Germany -125 vs. Italy +330, Draw +225

Notable quotable

"I think the time has come to beat the next big opponent. We have already beaten Argentina, England, Netherlands and Brazil and I think Italy are next. We certainly have respect for them for what Italy have achieved here, especially with the football scandals back home. But we have no fear." Germany midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger ahead of Thursday's match with Italy.

Notes and tips

The Arizona Diamondbacks’ star pitching prospect Trevor Bauer will make his MLB debut Thursday on the road against the Atlanta Braves. Bauer, the No. 3 overall pick in last year’s draft, was tearing it up in Triple-A Reno with a 4-0 record and a 2.82 earned-run average in eight starts. He had 116 strikeouts in 93 innings spanning 16 starts in Double-A and Triple-A. Arizona is set as a +115 underdog.

Two weeks ago, Bears coach Lovie Smith said he fully expected Brian Urlacher to be on the field when training camp begins in Bourbonnais on July 25. Urlacher told the Chicago Tribune he'll be back "for sure" after missing offseason workouts and minicamp recovering from a sprained MCL and PCL in his left knee on Jan. 2 at Minnesota. "I could have participated in minicamp, but there was no reason to," Urlacher said. Urlacher, 34, likely won't practice more than three straight days and will be rested on days with dual practice.

Deron Williams, one of the top free agents in the NBA this summer, isn't expected to take a tour of cities of interested teams. He has narrowed his choices to his hometown Dallas Mavericks and re-signing with the Brooklyn Nets. If the past week is any indication, the Mavericks have ground to gain on the Nets. It's unlikely another suitor, such as the Houston Rockets, will gain traction in pursuit of Williams. Williams is keeping a regular workout scheduled at the Nets' facility in New Jersey and celebrated his birthday with a dinner in New York that included Nets' coach Avery Johnson.

Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

-- There have been 29 games this year where a pitcher got 20+ swings/ misses; if you bet $100 on that pitcher’s team in his next start, you’d be 16-10, +$222.

-- UConn-Michigan State are playing hoops at an Army base in Germany next November, a real game.

-- Scapegoat alert: Bob Apodaca is out as pitching coach in Colorado, which will solve nothing. The Rockies don’t have any good pitchers, well other than Chacin and de la Rosa, who are both hurt.

-- Gas is $3.59 here, as low as its been in a long time, but its $3.13 in San Antonio, under $3.00 in South Carolina. What the hell’s going on up here?

-- Jim Irsay actually tweeted about the Colts being a 10-point dog in their season opener at Chicago. Think he’ll be getting a phone call from Park Avenue about that one.

-- Odd: Doc Rivers is spending draft night with his son, not the Celtics’ brass. Not like he’s the coach or anything.

*************

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Our major league baseball List of 13......

13) Pirates 39-35—Over his last nine starts, Burnett has turned into Bob Gibson; need another hitter to help McCutchen.

12) Mets 40-36—Santana/Dickey formidable 1-2 punch in rotation; after Wright, who’s their next-best hitter?

11) Braves 40-34-- Can they send Chipper out in style? Beachy’s injury hurts this rating. Need Jurrjens to return to form.

10) Rays 40-35—Longoria needs to train more for durability; second year in row he’s missed extended time. Brooks Conrad hit cleanup Wednesday.

9) Red Sox 40-35—Giving Youkilis away makes Valentine’s life easier, but didn’t improve team. They could see Youkilis again in October.

8) Dodgers 43-33— Kemp/Ethier are both hurt; they didn't score a run in three games at San Francisco. Need the All-Star break, and soon.

7) Orioles 41-33—Will Hammel maintain excellence after he goes to All-Star Game? Showalter is Manager of the Year, to this point.

6) Reds 41-33—Only NL team to use only five starting pitchers this season. Is Chapman the long-term answer at closer?

5) Nationals 43-30—Not sure if it is cortisone shot, Coors Field or poor Colorado pitchers, but Zimmerman hit ball well last four games.

4) Angels 42-33—Pujols has 34 RBI in last 39 games; Frieri has solidified bullpen. A team you will not want to see in a short series.

3) Giants 43-33— If they ever get Lincecum back on track, should pass Dodgers. Might do it anyway. Pagan/Cabrera have been godsends.

2) Bronx 46-28—Would be more impressed if they could score without hitting homers. That said, they do hit lot of homers. Sabathia/Pettitte both got hurt Wednesday; Sabathia is irreplaceable over long term.

1) Rangers 47-29—Two-time AL champs have some holes in rotation, but they do score lot of runs.

Public opinion: Bettors fade King Felix vs. BoSox

Odds and consensus percentages current as of 9 p.m. ET, Wednesday.

MLB:

Boston Red Sox at Seattle Mariners (-105, 7)

Seattle has won each of Felix Hernandez’s last two starts as the big ace held his opposition to just two runs while striking out 17 over 14 innings. Still, Seattle has won just seven of his 15 starts this season averaging only 3.9 runs in his outings.

Consensus: Red Sox, 68 percent

WNBA:

Los Angeles Sparks at San Antonio Silver Stars (-4.5, 162.5)

The Silver Stars have owned the Sparks lately, covering in seven of the last eight meetings between the two teams. The Sparks have been having a terrible time covering a spread against anyone. They head into Thursday’s action riding a 1-5-1 skid against the number.

Consensus: Silver Stars, 57 percent

Thursday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Streaking

A.J. Burnett, Pittsburgh Pirates (8-2, 3.24 ERA)

Burnett keeps forcing us to include him in this section every time he takes the ball. In his last trip to the hill he fired six shutout innings, allowing only two hits while striking out four. It was his seventh straight win and he has allowed more than two runs just once in the last nine starts. He ranks third in the MLB starter money standings, having earned 9.66 units for his supporters.

Johnny Cueto, Cincinnati Reds (9-3, 2.21 ERA)

Cueto looks to cap off a terrific month Thursday against the San Francisco Giants. He improved to 4-0 in June by blanking the Twins over seven innings while striking out a season-high nine batters. Cueto now has 25 strikeouts over his last three starts and has thrown at least 105 pitches in each of his last five outings.

Slumping

Josh Outman, Colorado Rockies (0-3, 8.64 ERA)

There isn't much in the way of true Slumping pitchers set to go Thursday, but Outman is one to tread carefully with after his start was pushed back a day. He has allowed at least four runs in four of his five starts and gave up five runs in 4 2/3 innings in a no-decision against Texas. He fired 92 pitches in that one, the most he has thrown in a start all year. Outman owns a 9.00 ERA and has allowed four homers in his last three.

Afternoon delight: Best day-game bets in baseball
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What do Superman, your high school calculator and the Detroit Tigers have in common?

They’re all powered by the sun.

That must be the case for Detroit. How else can you explain the Tigers’ flip-flopped 20-16 record in day games and their 16-22 record in the evening?

And, even though Detroit has been much better during the day, it still hasn’t produced profits for bettors. The Tigers are -3.16 units in the hole in the afternoon, which stings less than the -11.17 units burned at night.

Detroit may not be the best day-game bet in baseball, but these five clubs are:

Stats as of June 27, 2012.

Cincinnati Reds (20-9 in day games for 9.98 units)

The Reds are the big surprise of the NL Central, using an insane record in day games to climb to the top of the standings. Cincinnati is hitting at 68 percent during matinees, compared to a sub-.500 record at night (21-23). The Reds’ team ERA dips to 3.30 during the day (from 3.66 in the evening) and they're averaging 4.78 runs in the summer sun, compared to 4.06 at night.

Baltimore Orioles (14-8 in day games for 10.23 units)

The Orioles were the No. 1 stunners in the first quarter of the schedule, dropping jaws all the way to the top of the AL East. Now, Baltimore is coming back to earth, losing five of its last seven. However, the O’s remain the most profitable day-game bet in baseball – for now – bringing in more than 10 of their total 16.34 units under the sun.

New York Mets (18-11 in day games for 8.47 units)

The difference between the Mets at day and night is, well, night and day. New York is just 21-25 under the lights this season, nearly erasing all those day-game earnings. The Mets’ bats heat up from the sun, hitting .272 during the day (fourth best in MLB), compared to .245 at night. David Wright, New York’s finest bat, is hitting .400 with four home runs and 17 RBIs during day action, despite having 70 fewer at-bats than night games.

San Francisco Giants (20-13 in day games for 7.36 units)

When the lights go down in the city and the sun shines on the bay, do I want to be there in my city. Ohoh ohohoh ohoh! You better believe you want to be there in the City by the Bay. The Giants are storming up the NL West standings thanks to a stellar record in day games. San Francisco’s pitchers boast a collective 3.05 ERA in day games – third lowest in baseball. Preach on it Journey.

Chicago White Sox (18-11 in day games for 5.37 units)

The other Chicago club is known more for its day-heavy schedule, but the Southsiders' motto has always been "When it's right, it's right". The White Sox have turned modest profits during day games this season, but are among the most consistent breadwinners during day games for the past four seasons. Chicago has gone 137-111 in matinees since 2008, bringing in more than 19 units for ChiSox bettors.
