Friday: 7-5, + 3.6 units. Glad to be above 60 units again. Still fuming about losing the Tigers/ KC game. Smyly and Sanchez pitch lights out for 5 innings, when they have both been so dependable giving up early game runs for many weeks. Also disappointed in myself for jumping on the Nats game when Pomeranz has looked so good even prior to tonight's game. And Colvin is on fire. Of course, the Oakland win in extra innings evened all things out. But those damn Tigers……….

KC: ML. One unit. No, this is not spite for Detroit not getting more than 2 runs on that bum Sanchez in the first 5. Nice big plus number of +143. Fister has been completely off his game now for last 2 starts, and his velocity is down. Seems to have lingering effects from his injury. After lefty Smyly befuddled the Royals Friday, maybe a change to a righty will bring their bats alive. They have been hitting well. Also, Detroit has been terrible at scoring. They can hit, but can't seem to capitalize. They have been facing some poor pitching too. Bruce Chen is usually competitive, and KC plays well on the road. They have had some big scoring outbursts lately among their clunkers.

Minnesota. ML. First 5. Should be about +180. Derek Holland coming off the DL and has not pitched well at home the past 2 years. Has issues with HRs too and the Twins have been hitting them lately- 13 in the past week. In fact, the Twins have played well since the beginning of June. In the past week they have lost to Verlander and Sale, lost 2 one run losses, but have won their fair share too. Take out the Verlander game, and they have been as hot as anyone. The new kid Deduno has been very good at AAA. It seems that most of these new pitchers coming up pitch well their first couple times out, or more. His curve is his out pitch, but has a slider, change up, and movement on his fastball. The Rangers are not invincible anymore, but I can see them winning this one late against the crappy Twins bullpen.

Chisox: -1. One unit. Romero can't find the plate and when he does he gets hammered. 16 ERs in last 9 IPs, and pitched poorly before that, Maybe a stint on the DL is next. The White Sox are able to bust out in games like this. If Floyd was more dependable, this would be 2 units.
Chisox- 1/2. First 5. One unit. This game also has TT and over potential.

NYY/ Boston. Game 2 has over potential too. No line tonight.

STL. -1. One unit. The Cards have been killing me, but I'm convinced that they have been getting unlucky breaks and will soon bust out against someone. Like Zambrano. His command and fastball have steadily regressed and I'm not sure he is physically right. Or he just got old fast. The Marlins are not offensive dynamos and Lohse has been consistently their best pitcher. Both bullpens are suspect, though the Cards probably play better defense.
STL- 1/2 first 5 IPs. One unit.

LAA. -1 one unit. Weaver has been an ace against almost the whole AL except Texas and Minnesota over the past few years. Baltimore is slogging through this road trip lucky to win a few. One bad pitch by Wilson Friday night, and some good pitching by (once again) a young rookie, and they pulled it out. But the Angels don't usually lose like that often and they pounded Hammel already in Baltimore a week or so back. Hammel is a success story, but he is less likely to pitch a good game here than Weaver. The O's have been struggling at the plate for about a month now, and have squeaked by on some of these West Coast games.

Cubs: TT over 3.5. One unit. Considering that Gee usually give up a few runs every start, and that he only goes 5-7 innings- and that the Mets bullpen is awful- this looks pretty low a total. the Cubs are putting out a pretty strong lineup today, and Samardjzia can even hit a bit. The Cubs also hit much better vs. right handers, and have hit Gee fairly well. Cubs have surprised in recent weeks with occasional run outbursts.

Pirates: TT over 4. One unit. Their first 6 hitters are a murderer's row. Today they have almost all lefties vs. RHP Vogelsong. McCuthcheon can hit everyone. As I said in an earlier post, he is possibly the toughest out in baseball right now. Vogelsong has been pedestrian away from SF, and has faced some poor hitting or slumping teams lately. He has a high LOB rate that can't last. Giants BP has also been a source of concern.

Boston is unraveling. This is not the Red Sox team of yesteryear or even last year (until September). If not for their reputation for winning and scoring in bunches at Fenway, this is a very mediocre team. Their West Coast trip and 2 games with the Yankees are evidence that they are not going to the playoffs unless they get MUCH healthier. With all their injuries, they are playing backups and guys brought up in desperation from the minors. These guys like Punto, Nava, Kalish and a couple of other guys will not produce consistently. Nava is already slumping Badly. Punto is a joke. Middlebrooks was slumping before he hurt his hammy, Gonzalez is just starting to hit and Ortiz at 36 has regressed a bit since early season. Pedroia, Ellsbury and Crawford on the DL. Shoppach is a career sub .200 hitter and Saltalamacchia has been also slumping(lots of Ks). I don't need to go on, but this lineup is about 1/3 of the guys they planned to go with this year. Players are not playing with the same guys day in and day out, and that bonding and communication won't be there.

Then there is the pitching staff. No one has really stepped up to be the ace- Lester and Beckett are much lesser pitchers this year, and Beckett maybe permanently so. The bullpen has improved, but is missing a real closer. And headhunter Vinny Padilla is getting to pitch in close games- that's not a good sign. Now let's get to Felix Doubront since I saw him pitch in Seattle. From what I can see(and read about), batters are figuring him out. He throws hard, but with spotty command- so fastballs end up in the middle of the plate or he walks batters. His slider is too fast and too close in velocity to his fastball, with little command also. The lowly Mariners, if they could hit at all, could have gotten to him. With his spotty command, he toils each inning. With the Yankees, who are more patient, he'll really toil. Miami, whom also has problems hitting, hit him much better the 2nd time around. As with a lot of new pitchers to the league, he had early success, but now batters and scouts have him figured out. He also pitches worse at Fenway. With all that being said……..

Got cut off editing. NYY: TT over 5 for 2 units.
NYY. ML. one unit. Hughes more polished than Doubront, Yanks have better BP and with all the subs for Boston, a better hitting attack. Ortiz does hit Hughes well, but surprisingly Hughes has better stats against lefties.

What a frustrating and uninspired effort by NYY tonight through 6. Hughes pitches OK but idiotic errors kill him...Granderson's first of the year... nobody can field the ball cleanly.

Doubrant gives up 3 early and then shuts em down.

Let's get some runs NYY!
