Thought I was just having a light week, but then a package shipped USPS was returned to the seller with no explanation, an I realized that something is clearly up. What are the reasons this could be happening? I'd received mail at this address for over a year previously, it's a small apartment complex with no dogs or anything that would prevent the carrier from delivering...

Any thoughts appreciated, jut want to be somewhat prepared when I go to the main post office to talk to them.

Yea, as far as I know, I should not have been the recipient of anything illegal. I do owe the IRS some money (low 4 figures), but as far as I know that's the only thing law enforcement/feds could have against me.

I am (was) a letter carrier for 26 years before being sidelined with a bad knee caused by over a quarter century of mail delivery.

This is "prime" vacation time for letter carriers. Most likely your "regular" mailman is on vacation and there is a temp filling in. Certainly your regular mailman knows what apt you are in. Look at your mail of late I bet all of it has your apt # on it.. The mail being returned most probably has no apt # on it making it "insufficiant address" in the eyes of the PO. Even the regular carrier "should" return all letters w/o apt # as insufficiant but as a courtesy and wanting to provide the best service we can we (I) always delivered numbered or not as long as we knew the recipiant was living there.

Trust my words the PO is a shadow of its former self....

As far as going to the main PO. Do not waste your time... The manager will just yes you to death, tell you what I told you, take your name and address and "if" he remembers tell the carrier of record (most likely a fill in) about your complaint..

I hope this helped... PM me with any concern about your mail and I will be happy to talk with you

Thanks! I am keeping an eye out my front window for the carrier today, to see if he knows what the deal is.

The apartment # thing should not be an issue, like for instance, with my Amazon purchase that was returned, my apartment # has always been on the boxes. If it is that simple of a problem though, I'll be thrilled.

If the carrier doesn't know what's up, what should my next move be?

Is your name on your mail box? All names are required to be on the mailboxes of multi unit deliveries.

Next move... call Amazon and see if the package was endorsed prior to its return ( no such number, attempted unknown, insufficiant address are a few)

See the carrier today and ask if he is the regular if not please adviser him that you are CelticGreen and in apt 10 for example. Once you introduce yourself he/she will know you are a valid delivery point and numbered or not you should get your mail

Also ask if he/she is the regular carrier -1500 the answer is no

I almost forgot...

Was the Amazon package oversized or require a signature for delivery? If so you would have found a pink attempted delivery receipt in your mail. The PO would then hold your package for 10 days and if unclaimed after that return it as such.. If this was the case you should have gotten a second notice prior to the piece being returned

I don't think they even attempted to deliver it - no attempted-delivery slip... and in terms of the amount of time that passed, there wouldn't have been enough for them to hold it for more than a day or two.

Last summer about this time I didn't receive mail for over a week.I never stop my mail. Sure enough the sub carrier was on that week as my regular carrier almost never screws up. Funny thing is I figured I'd get a pile of it when regular got back but seems that week of mail got delivered elsewhere or was lost.

Keith... Probably delivered elsewhere.... When I would get back from vacation I would scratch my head as to how it was possible for the sub to screw up so badly......I would be picking up misdelivered mail for a week after my return

Celtic Green.........did you catch your carrier today?

No, didn't see him. My building is like, one of those two-story motel looking structures, and he didn't pass by my apt. I might sit outside tomorrow and wait for him.

Mailman, where was your route in MA? Lived all over metro-Boston for 29yrs...

You can call the local post office around 8 or 9 AM before your carrier hits the street, and ask to speak to him to see whats going on.

Pete Yes you can but if it is summer coverage (like I suspect) you might as well talk to yourself
