Chicago White Sox @ Kansas City Royals

To start off the second half of the year, we have a baseball matchup between the Chicago White Sox and the Kansas City Royals. Following the All-Star break, this game will be played in Kansas City. The White Sox finished the first half of the season on a high note and went 5-1 in their last six games. Entering the second half, they are 47-38 overall. They will be on the road here where they are 23-26 so far this season, but are 4-2 in their last six games. As for the Royals, they are entering this game with a record of 37-47 overall. They finished off the first half on a three game losing streak and lost 8 of their last 10. They will be at home here where they are only 14-23 so far this season. In tonight’s pitching matchup, The White Sox will have Jose Quntana on the mound up against Bruce Chen. So far this season Quintana has been a very pleasant surprise for the White Sox. He has helped anchor the rotation, while guys like Floyd have failed to achieve, or guys like Danks and Humber who are the DL. So far this season Quintana is 4-1 with an ERA of 2.04. in his last start, he was able to pitch 8 innings and allow just one earned run against the Texas Rangers. So far this season Quintana has started 8 games. In those 8 starts, he has only allowed more than 2 earned runs once. That start came in Yankee Stadium against the Yankees, which is certainly understandable. However the funny thing is, that was one of the games where he was able to collect one of his four wins. Whether on the road or at home Quintana has done well. This will be his first start against the Royals so there is nothing to review there. As for Bruce Chen, he is coming into this game with a record of 7-8 and an ERA of 5.22. He is coming off of back to back starts where he has allowed six earned runs. He last start game in Detroit where he was only able to survive 3.1 innings after allowing the six earned runs. The start before that came in Minnesota. So far July has not been a good month for Chen as he is 0-2 with a 12.00 ERA. He will be at home here where he is 4-3 with an ERA of 3.21. Some other good news for Chen is the fact he will be up against the White Sox. He is 3-1 with a 1.79 ERA in his last six starts against the White Sox. As for the odds entering this prop, the White Sox are coming in as slight favorites at -117 over the Royals at +107.

Bottomline: This prop could really go either way. The first scenario is that Chen continues with his recent form and gives up 6 early runs, or he continues his recent form against the White Sox and pitches very well. Although I think you should consider Chen’s success against Chicago, I do not think you should overreact. Quintana has been a very effective pitcher and should hold the Royals’ lineup in check. I trust this Chicago lineup can pull together some runs and start the second half on the track.

My Pick: Chicago White Sox

Confidence: 4/5
