New York Mets @ Atlanta Braves

Next up we have the second game of a three game series between two National League East rivals. These teams entered this series only a half a game apart in the standings. Last night the Braves were able to take the first game and beat the Mets 7-5. After that lose, the Mets are now 46-41 on the year and are only 2-4 in their last 6 games and are currently on a two game losing streak. The Mets are only 20-21 on the road this season, but they are 4-2 in their last six road games. As for the Braves, they are now 47-39 on the season and are on a five game winning streak. The only bad news for the Braves is that they will be at home today, where they have surprisingly struggled this season and are only 21-22. Today should be a good game as the Mets will have RA Dickey on the mound up against Tommy Hanson. So far this season RA Dickey was unbelievable and went 12-1 with an ERA of 2.40 in the first half. Unfortunately, he is coming off of his worst game, where he allowed 11 hits in seven innings against the Phillies. As a result, he allowed five earned runs. Dickey will be on the road today which should not impose and issue for him, as he is 6-1 with a 2.47 ERA this season. Now Dickey does have two starts this season against the Braves, however these starts came back in April. He was able to go 6 innings in the first start while allowing only 2 earned runs. It was the second start where things got ugly and he allowed 8 earned runs in 4.1 innings. That was his worst start as far as runs are concerned, and it was also his shortest outing. Now I think a very important thing to realize is that in the 17 games that Dickey has started for the Mets, they are 14-3. As for Tommy Hanson, he is entering this game with a record of 10-5 and a 3.71 ERA. He has been a solid pitcher, but not quite to the level of RA Dickey. In his two starts in July, he has an ERA of 4.50 and is 1-1. Those starts came against the Pirates and the Cubs. Hanson will be pitching at home today, where he is 3-3 with a 4.63 ERA. Pitching at home has not been is strength, as he is a much better pitcher on the road. Just like Dickey, Hanson has started two games against his opponent this season. Those two starts came back in April as well. In his first start of the season he was able to go 5 innings while allowing only one run. However, in his third start of the season and second against the Mets, he allowed 5 runs (4 earned runs) through 7 innings which resulted in a 6-1 loss for the Braves. When comparing these offenses, the Mets have the slight advantage, as they are ranked 8th in baseball in runs scored, while the Braves are ranked 9th. As for the odds, the Braves are coming in as slight favorites at -110 over the Mets at +100.

Bottomline: When looking at this prop, I do not think you can pay too much attention to the odds because neither team is getting too much of an edge. I think the more important thing to understand is that anytime Dickey is on the mound for the Mets, the Mets are going to be put in a position to win a game. As I mentioned above, Dickey has started 17 games this season and the Mets are 14-3 in those games (1-1 against the Braves). Tommy Hanson has been a solid starting pitcher, but if he allows four earned runs, that may be enough for the Mets to win this game.

My Pick: New York Mets

Confidence: 3.5/5
