Processing speed and hard drives are growing at such an enormous rate, the best thing to do is to buy a year old used laptop computer at some computer repair store....that has been wiped clean/windows 7 or 8 reloaded, and has everything you could ever need power wise. 150-200 american greenbacks.....tops. It won't last 5 years anyway, you will get a virus or something will happen like you lose a big bet and throw it ##)

if you are talking about a laptop I agree, I change mine every two years or so, usually buy cheaper available with the features I need and I accept that, given the abuse I subject them to...the keyboard, case or anything like that will break within 2 years.

a desktop on the other hand can easily last 5 or more years.

talk to a techie friend, buy the components and let him build it

I have my son build my machines now. It's not his profession, he couldn't make money doing it, but they're the best machines I've ever had

this is actually a good idea, its more costly as the manufacturers get discounts on the windows license but it will be free from a lot of stupid programs that come preloaded in regular HP/dell/etc boxes.
