Giants & Braves Continue Series At Turner Field

A key clash of National League playoff hopefuls is part of Wednesday's MLB betting card as the Atlanta Braves and San Francisco Giants play the middle contest of their 3-game set.

First pitch at Turner Field will be delivered by Braves southpaw Mike Minor at 7:10 p.m. (ET). The Giants' Ryan Vogelsong opposes Minor, and the Braves opened at -115 to -120 with an 8½-run total that was priced to the 'over.'

Both clubs are right in the thick of the NL race entering the series that got underway Tuesday with the Braves $1.45 favorites and also listed an 8½-run total. San Francisco bolted into the NL West lead this past weekend by sweeping the Houston Astros, and entered the series with a 2-game edge over the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Braves sported the majors' longest current win streak, seven and counting before the first game of this series, and were 2.5-games behind the Washington Nationals in the NL East while holding the lead in the wild card standings.

Offense is where the biggest disparity between the two clubs resides. Atlanta is third in the NL scoring 4.68 runs per game while the Giants rank 11th roughly three-quarters of a run lower (3.92 rpg). San Francisco pitchers help make up for some of that with a 3.53 staff ERA that is fourth in the Senior Circuit. Braves hurlers come in with a 3.93 ERA, a tick better than the league average.

Vogelsong (7-4, 2.36) has certainly done his part for the Giants, and remains under the radar despite a solid 2011 campaign and ranking second on the NL ERA charts this season. San Francisco is 11-5 in his 16 outings (+6.8 units) and the right-hander has strung together 13 consecutive quality starts that have resulted in 10 Giant victories.

Wednesday will mark his first career assignment vs. Atlanta, with his only appearance to date against the Braves a long relief outing in April 2011.

Minor (5-6, 5.97) has teetered on the edge of losing his job in the Braves rotation most of the season, but does bring a 2-start winning streak into Wednesday's contest. The young southpaw pitched well against the Cubs in his most recent trip to the mound (July 5), allowing just two earned runs in 6-1/3 innings while striking out six. That was one of only five quality starts Minor has made in 16 tries.

His lone collision with the Giants came about 11 months ago, and Minor was outstanding with six shutout frames in Atlanta's 1-0 home win as small 'dogs against Tim Lincecum.

Turner Field has been the epitome of a hostile environment for the Giants since it opened in 1997. The Braves owned a lopsided 39-19 advantage against San Fran on this diamond before Tuesday's affair, and had won nine of the last 12 played in Atlanta.

Neither team is reporting any new injuries since the all-star break. The Giants missed all-star outfielder Melky Cabrera for last Sunday's finale vs. the Astros after he flew to Florida to be with his wife who was expecting the couple's third child. San Francisco will reportedly not place Cabrera on paternity leave, and he should be in the lineup Wednesday.

Wednesday betting tips: Wind blowing out at Yankee Stadium

Weather to watch

Scattered thundershowers are in the forecast for most games on Wednesday. Here’s a few you watch:

White Sox at Red Sox – Meteorologists are calling for a 50 percent chance of rain.

Mets at Nationals – There’s a 50 percent chance of precipitation and it’ll feel like 101 degrees out there with the humidity.

Blue Jays at Yankees – The wind is expected to be blowing out to center field and the temperature will feel like triple-digit hot, thanks again to the humidity.

Who’s hot?

San Antonio Silver Stars – The Stars are 9-0 straight up and 8-1 against the spread over their last nine games. San Antonio visits Tulsa to play the Shock on Wednesday.

Toronto FC – The worst side in the MLS is on a respectable run. TFC is 3-1-4 in its last eight matches, including wins in its last two games. Toronto FC hosts Colorado on Wednesday.

Who’s not?

San Francisco Giants on the road – The Giants are 1-6 in their last seven road games heading into Tuesday’s matchup against the Braves. San Fran is also 1-6 in its last seven games against Atlanta.

Key stat

205 – Bunkers at Royal Lytham & St. Annes course, the location for this year’s British Open which begins Thursday. That’s the most bunkers in an Open Championship venue according to ESPN Stats & Info.

Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Jose Bautista, Toronto Blue Jays – The major league home run leader in 2010 and 2011 was put on the 15-day disabled listed with a wrist injury. Bautista was removed in eighth inning of Monday’s game against the Yankees after an awkward swing left the Blue Jay bopper clutching his left wrist. He has 27 homers this season and 65 RBIs.

Notable quotable

“It’s easier to win the National Championship than the SEC. Ask Nick Saban.”– South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier on his team’s SEC schedule this season. The Gamecocks play at Vandy, Kentucky, LSU and Florida, and host Missouri, Georgia, Arkansas and Tennessee. The LVH has South Carolina’s win total set at 8.5 (over +130).

Notes and tips

The Milwaukee Brewers are making a shakeup in their bullpen. John Axford is out and Francisco Rodriguez is in. Axford was 46 for 48 in save opportunities in 2011 but already has six blown saves, including a bad one on Monday, this season. Rodriguez isn’t having a great season but at least he’s comfortable in the closer role.

Make sure you know who’s playing in Week 1 of the NFL season and who will likely be suspended. Sheriff/NFL commissioner Roger Goodell will have to put some thought into possible bans for Cowboys WR Dez Bryant and Seahawks RB Marshawn Lynch. Lynch was arrested for a DWI while Bryant got in a tussle with his mom. Who beats up their mom anyway? The Cowboys are 3-point road dogs Week 1 against the Giants, while Seattle is getting 2.5 points at Arizona.

Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

Odds on the British Open, which starts in the middle of the night here in Las Vegas, late Wednesday night.........

4-1-- Eldrick Woods-- Its been raining a lot in Lancashire this week.

7-1-- Lee Westwood-- Golf coverage comes on at 1:30am here in Vegas.

10-1-- Rory McIlroy-- Has he played too much golf this season?

15-1-- Luke Donald-- Has been #1 in world for much of this year.

15-1-- Martin Kaymer-- What are the oddsmakers telling us here?

15-1-- Padraig Harrington-- Do Europeans have edge in hideous weather?

************

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Random thought from the desert........

13) I'm going to talk about the NBA Summer League more later this week, but for $28, its a great bargain to sit there for as long as you can and watch guys play for their careers. Not many of these guys are NBA players, but there are still way to make six-figure salaries playing basketball.

12) Its fun to listen to conversations in the bleachers, see what people are saying about the games we're watching. Problem is, I would say 70% of the conversations I've heard weren't in English. What the Summer League really has become is an open tryout for pro leagues overseas.

11) Every high school basketball player should come here and watch these highly competitive games, guys who were outstanding players in college, but are fighting their butts off just to make an NBA roster. You need skills and a lot of them, and it helps to be exceptional at one thing. Ain't easy.

10) ESPNU is awesome this week, getting us ready for college football; lot of game replays and SEC coaches' news conferences. I could listen to Steve Spurrier talk all day. Not only does he have the southern/preacher voice, he is more candid than most coaches, and takes jabs at the writers.

9) Syracuse paid $7.5M to leave Big East a year early, as in this time next year. Why would the Big East want to keep them, if they want to leave?

8) Weird going into a sporting goods store and seeing that orange/blue #18 jersey with "Manning" on the back. Just doesn't seem right.

7) David Ortiz strained his achilles tendon jogging around the bases after a home run. Seriously, he did.

6) I watch these NBA summer games and men 6-7, 6-9 or 7-feet tall sprint like hell up the floor on a fast break, and another guy his size is trying like hell to get back on defense, and no one ever tweaks a hamstring. Why? If I owned a baseball team, damn sure these guys would train differently then they do now. They need to train for durability.

5) I was in Nike Town at Caeser's Palace Monday night, and saw Seattle's new football jerseys. Flourescent trim around the numbers, kind of like the Oregon uniforms, only with Seahawk colors. Very different.

4) I am driving the only rental car in Nevada with New Jersey license plates. Toyota Camry, nice car. Driving out here, at least near the Strip, is trying for someone with very little patience (me). Lot of waiting in traffic.

City is set up in a grid, so its almost impossible to get lost for too long if you're paying attention. Having a rental car makes me more mobile and makes the trip more fun. First time I've rented a car out here.

3) Georgia Tech signed a high school QB this week because they were the only school to promise him a shot at playing QB. Of course, Tech's QB's do not throw the football, they run the option, so easier for them to let a kid who can't pass very well play QB, as long as he can run.

In a related question, why would any high school WR who had another shot at a scholarship choose Tech? All their receivers do is block.

2) Still trying to get used to all these college teams switching leagues. Does not compute yet that West Virginia is in the Big X, or Nevada in the MWC, Missouri in the SEC, or Colorado in the Pac-12, for that matter.

1) Someone in my family (not me) is going to have a seizure soon if Mets don't bolster their bullpen; their loss Tuesday was just painful, especially for a team on a losing streak. Times like this call for a move just to shake it up a little, change for the sake of change. This is a time that calls for panic.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Wednesday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

STREAKING

Jordan Zimmerman, Washington Nationals (6-6, 2.48 ERA)

This righty is on a run of eight consecutive quality starts and has allowed one or fewer earned runs in each of his last four outings. The Nats are 3-1 in Zimmy’s last four trips to the bump.

Francisco Liriano, Minnesota Twins (3-8, 4.93 ERA)

Did Liriano really have 15 strikeouts in his last start or was that just an acid flashback from 2006? All jokes aside, Liriano is pitching much better. He owns a 3.16 ERA since the start of June and the under 6-3 in his last nine appearances. The Twins are 4-1 in his last five outings and were underdogs in three of those wins.

Mat Latos, Cincinnati Reds (7-2, 4.10 ERA)

The Reds had to have been sweating after the first month of the season. Mat Latos, the stud youngster they traded four players to San Diego for, was 1-2 with a 5.97 ERA at the end of April. There have been some up and downs but Cincy backers are beginning to see the big, hard-throwing righty they’d seen in a Padre uniform.

The Reds are 8-2 in Latos’ last 10 turns in the rotation and the 24-year-old has struck out 33 batters in his last 30 innings pitched. The under is 3-0-1 in his last four starts.

SLUMPING

Bruce Chen, Kansas City Royals (7-8, 5.50 ERA)

Wasn’t this guy a hot commodity at last year’s trade deadline? This year… not so much. Chen has allowed six runs in each of his last three starts and opposing hitters have clubbed out seven dingers off him over the same three-game period.

Angels at Tigers: What bettors need to know
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Angeles at Detroit Tigers (+100, 9)

Few 20-year-old major leaguers have made the kind of impact Mike Trout is having on the Los Angeles Angels. The Detroit Tigers found out firsthand Tuesday night, and will look to limit the enigmatic rookie when the teams clash Wednesday in the third contest of their four-game set at Comerica Park. Trout has been sensational so far in the series, hitting 5-for-10 with a homer, three RBIs and four runs scored.

Detroit right-hander Doug Fister is latest pitcher entrusted with the task of silencing Trout and the rest of the vaunted Angels lineup. Fister has been stronger of late after struggling for most of the previous two months. He is opposed by left-hander C.J. Wilson, who has been every bit as good as the Angels hoped he would be when they signed him away from the rival Texas Rangers in the offseason.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, FSW (Los Angeles), FSD (Detroit)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Angels LH C.J. Wilson (9-5, 2.43 ERA) vs. Tigers RH Doug Fister (3-6, 4.39 ERA)

Wins have been hard to come by of late - Wilson is just 0-1 with two no-decisions in his last three starts - but the 31-year-old isn't to blame. He has allowed three earned runs or fewer in all but one of his 19 starts on the campaign and is 6-2 with a 2.07 ERA in 12 road outings. The Tigers are one of the few teams to have given Wilson fits over his career; he's just 0-1 with a 5.56 ERA in 11 appearances (one start).

Fister is coming off back-to-back victories, the latter an impressive seven-inning stint in Baltimore where he limited the Orioles to a run on three hits while striking out eight. Prior to the consecutive wins, the 28-year-old had dropped three straight outings while allowing 19 runs in 14 1/3 frames. Fister is no stranger to the Angels, going 1-3 with a 3.95 ERA in six career starts. He has allowed just two home runs in 41 innings against them.

TRENDS:

* Over is 6-2 in the last eight meetings in Detroit.
* Over is 5-2 in the last seven meetings.
* Angels are 7-2 in their last nine during Game 3 of a series.
* Tigers are 8-2 in their last 10 overall.

UMP TRENDS - Rob Drake:

* Over is 8-3-1 in Drakes last 12 games behind home plate.
* Road team is 6-0 in Drakes last six games behind home plate vs. Los Angeles.
* Angels are 3-7 in their last 10 games with Drake behind home plate.

WALK-OFFS:

1. Trout has scored a run in nine consecutive games, five off the franchise record set by Jim Edmonds in 1995.

2. The Tigers' current roster is hitting just .212 against Wilson.

3. Detroit OF Austin Jackson failed to score a run Tuesday, ending his streak of crossing the plate at 13 games. It was the longest such streak by a Tigers player since Johnny Groth achieved the feat in 1951.
