If a betting exchange is just a mediator between bettors that collects a small percentage of each play, then I guess it would stand to reason that you would be totally safe depositing your money there and receiving payouts since the exchange doesn't care whether you win or lose since its not you against them. Also, no matter how much you win they would never cut you off because, again, they wouldn't care. Is my understanding correct and if so, why would anyone use any other outlet? Obviously traditional books don't want you to win and will place limits, stall on payments, etc... So how do they stay in business?

The answer is because most of these markets are not liquid enough for matches or games people want to bet. You dont have enough want or need on both sides and not everyone who wants to bet can bet then.

Hence why recently betmaker failed in USA.... if you live outside usa of course betfair won't be going anywhere I am sure for a while.

Betfair owns racing station TVG, and has been trying for two years to get wagering exchanges for Horse Racing legalized, with no success. Betfair sponsors many Graded Horse Races all over the country, and now owns Hollywood park, which is now called "Betfair Hollywood Park". If they can not succeed, then no one in this country can. Betfair has poured millions of dollars into this, and so far, has had little success.
