Braves & Nationals Play First Of Four In DC

A busy weekend of baseball awaits the Atlanta Braves and Washington Nationals with four games stuffed into the next three days in the nation's capital.

Washington had a 4.5-game cushion over Atlanta in the NL East as the two clubs wrapped up series against the Mets and Giants respectively with Thursday matinees. Both contests were still pending and found the Nationals 130 favorites in their home affair with New York while the Braves were laying $1.15 vs. San Francisco who was going for a sweep at Turner Field.

The fourth series of the campaign between Washington and Atlanta gets underway Friday evening (7:05 p.m. ET), and the Nationals will send ace Stephen Strasburg to the mound as a 155 favorite. Tommy Hanson opposes Strasburg, and the opening 7-run total was priced two bits to the 'under.'

There has been a lot of recent chatter regarding just how long Strasburg will continue to pitch this season. His innings count is up to 105 heading into Friday, 106 if you include his frame at last week's All-Star Game, and Nats GM Mike Rizzo has said all along Strasburg would be shut down at some point. Strasburg missed most of his 2010 rookie season and all but the final month of 2011 due to Tommy John surgery.

Rizzo has backed off what was thought to be a 160-inning limit and commented this week, "There is no magic number."

Strasburg is making his fourth appearance of 2012 vs. the Braves, and second against their lineup at home. Atlanta managed to touch him up for seven runs and eight walks in the eight innings he tossed at Turner Field, winning one of those games, but Strasburg quieted the Braves in Nationals Park on June 2 with seven shutout innings while striking out nine with no free passes.

Hanson has run hot-&-cold over his 19 starts, but the end results have been good for the Braves who stand 13-6. A potent Atlanta lineup has bailed the big righty out on several occasions, and came to his rescue last Saturday at home vs. the Mets. Hanson surrendered nine hits and six runs before being chased in the sixth, but the Braves rallied to grab an 8-7 win.

His lone appearance this season against the Nationals was a good one and resulted in a 3-2 win in DC on June 3 as a +125 underdog. The Braves are 3-3 in his six career starts at Nationals Park.

Washington was expected to bolster its strong relief corps Thursday by activating Drew Storen from the disabled list. The right-hander had elbow surgery for bone chips in April after saving 43 games for the Nats a year ago. Storen is not expected to immediately move back into the closer's role since Tyler Clippard has filled in nicely, but it probably won't be long before we see Storen begin to get save ops and reclaim his job.

While the news on Storen is good, the Nats are still playing a bit short on the field with all-star shortstop Ian Desmond limited due to an oblique strain and outfielder Rick Ankiel designated for assignment to make roster room for Storen. Washington also just placed backup catcher Jhonatan Solano (oblique) on the DL and called up backstop Sandy Leon.

The Nationals have won six of the eight meetings this season, with the clubs splitting the two played at Nationals Park. Both of those contests stayed 'under' the mark while all six in Atlanta went 'over.'

A doubleheader is on Saturday's card, made necessary after a June 1 rainout in DC. The Nationals had yet to officially announce their starters for the twinbill, but all signs point to Edwin Jackson in one of the contests and John Lannan for the other. Lannan has been pitching in the minors all season, and the Nats are expected to recall him per the new roster rules that allow for the addition of a player when teams play doubleheaders.

Atlanta is slated to send Ben Sheets out for the opener with Randall Delgado following in the nightcap. Sunday's finale should find Jair Jurrjens opposing Ross Detwiler.

There is an 80 percent chance of thunderstorms in Washington DC on Friday, and a 30 percent chance of scattered storms both Saturday and Sunday.

LA Angels Return Home To Face Rival Rangers

The Los Angeles Angels hope to get some Southern California home cooking against AL West rival Texas Rangers in a huge weekend series.

The first game comes Friday at 10:05 p.m. (ET) and it’s the Angels’ Jered Weaver against the Rangers’ Derek Holland. Los Angeles is a $1.45 favorite on the Don Best odds screen with a total of 7½ (shaded to the ‘under.’)

Let’s begin with a look at the lefty Holland. He’s 6-4 with a 4.57 ERA, but is rounding into form after dealing with a stomach virus and shoulder fatigue. The mustached man looked very good in his only outing after the All-Star break, throwing 7 2/3 scoreless innings (four hits) at Seattle last Friday.

Holland will have had six days off between starts with Texas not playing both Monday and Thursday. He has nine career starts against the Angels and three relief appearances for a combined 5-3 (ERA around 5.00).

The 25-year-old has been much better on the road this year at 4-1 with a 2.58 ERA. The numbers in Arlington, Texas are surprising at just 2-3 with a 6.38 ERA.

Don Best Sports analyst Pat Williams knows that Holland will be facing a different Angels offense with the ‘T&T’ combination of Mike Trout and Mark Trumbo. These guys are both inspiring the other to do great things and Los Angeles is capable of making a run in the AL West even sitting six games back of Texas.

The Angels know this is a huge series for them, especially playing at home. They’re 25-18 there this year, but a more productive 9-4 in the last 13, winning all four series over the Diamondbacks, Giants, Dodgers and Orioles.

Weaver (11-1, 2.26 ERA) is having a great season despite missing time with a back ailment. He had his worst start of the season at Texas on May 13, a huge eight runs allowed over just 3 1/3 innings. He’ll be looking for revenge on Friday.

The 29-year-old right-hander has some gaudy numbers otherwise, including 6-0 with a 0.58 ERA at the Big A in Anaheim (Angels going 7-0). The offense has also shown up when Weaver pitches at home, an average margin of victory of 4.71 runs. Don Best’s Williams thinks the Angels could be an interesting run-line play.

Note these division rivals have met for a pair of 3-game series this season with the home team going 2-1 each time. The Angels won seven of the 10 played in Anaheim last season.

Pitchers' duel expected in Detroit Friday night

CHICAGO WHITE SOX (50-42)

at DETROIT TIGERS (49-44)

First pitch: Friday, 7:05 p.m. EDT
Line: Detroit -175, Chicago +165, Total: 7½

The Tigers, winners of 10 of the last 12, will look to continue their surge in the AL Central as they host the Chicago White Sox for the opener of a three-game set on Friday night.

Reigning AL Cy Young Award winner and MVP Justin Verlander takes the hill for the Tigers, setting them as heavy favorites in this one. Verlander has been spectacular all season with a 2.43 ERA and 0.93 WHIP, but has been even better in his past two starts, allowing just one run and seven hits in 17 innings. Jake Peavy will oppose him in this one after getting clobbered in his first start after the All-Star break, yielding six earned runs on 12 hits in seven innings to the Royals. Still, Peavy is also putting together a stellar season in which he has a 3.12 ERA and 1.04 WHIP, with that ERA dropping to 2.95 on the road. With Verlander on the mound, the Tigers should be expected to win any game, but the White Sox are savvy road opponents with a 26-20 (.565) away split. And Verlander has never quite figured out how to dominate the White Sox despite 25 career starts against them, sporting a mediocre 12-10 record (team is 13-12) and 4.13 ERA against them in those outings. Take a calculated risk on the big money and choose CHICAGO to cool down the Tigers, who are an unimpressive 25-21 at home this year.

This three-star FoxSheets trend also favors the White Sox:

Play On - All underdogs with a money line of +100 or higher (CHICAGO WHITE SOX) - excellent fielding team - averaging <=0.5 errors/game on the season, after 2 straight games with no home runs. (148-111 over the last 5 seasons.) (57.1%, +79.2 units. Rating = 3*).

Losers of four of their past six contests, the White Sox could really use a win to right the ship here. The bad news is they’ve scored just one run in three of their past four games, but that was against a surging AL East foe, a difficult task for Chicago this year. AL Central opponents, on the other hand, have been much easier, with the White Sox tallying a 19-13 (.594) mark against them, splitting their eight games so far with Detroit. Peavy is 3-2 with a 4.26 ERA and 1.13 WHIP in eight starts versus the Tigers in his career, with three of those starts coming in 2012. Although they hit him hard on May 15 (5.1 IP, 9 H, 6 ER), Peavy tossed two quality starts before that (3.14 ERA, 14 K, 2 BB), posting a personal 1-0 record. If Peavy does get into trouble, the Chicago bullpen has been more effective on the road this season with a 3.42 ERA and 1.19 WHIP away from home.

The Tigers have faced Peavy three times in 2012 but the White Sox have yet to see Justin Verlander. He has won his past three starts against Chicago, despite giving up three home runs in that span. Verlander has pitched well enough to give Detroit 10 wins in their past 11 meetings with Chicago when he takes the hill, but he allowed 3+ runs in five of those starts. The Tigers have given him plenty of run support in this span too, scoring 5+ runs in eight of these 11 Verlander outings. An interesting nugget with this year’s Detroit squad is its paltry 23-28 (.451) in night games. Not that the bullpen gets much work when Verlander takes the hill (7.4 IP per start), but if he does get into trouble (4 HR allowed in past three starts), the Tigers relievers have been excellent at Comerica Park this year with a 3.25 ERA and 1.28 WHIP.

Friday's betting tips: Tigers dominant against division foes

Weather watch

Rain is in the forecast for Citi Field, with a 100 percent chance of showers. If the Mets and Dodgers do peel back the tarp, expect a wet and wild coast-to-coast matchup.

Who’s hot?

San Diego Padres – Three wins in a row isn’t much to write home about. But when you’re talking about the Padres, three straight might as well be 13 in a row. San Diego took three of four games with the Astros and hosts the Rockies, starting Friday.

Who’s not?

Toronto Blue Jays – Toronto is mired in a three-game slide, sparked by injuries to sluggers Jose Bautista (15-day DL) and Brett Lawrie, who is questionable for Friday’s matchup with the Red Sox.

Key stat

25 – The Philadelphia Phillies will play 25 of their next 38 games at Citizens Bank Park. They’ve been one of the better home teams in recent history, however, the Phillies are just 17-27 as hosts this season.

Game of the day

Texas Rangers at Los Angeles Angels (-146, 7.5)

Injury not to be overlooked

Kevin Youkilis – The newest member of the White Sox sat out Thursday with hamstring tightness and is listed as day-to-day heading into the weekend. Youkilis is hitting 315 with a .941 OPS and 18 RBI in 19 games since being dealt to Chicago.

Notable quotable

“That’s Melky, and that’s why he’s not here anymore … He got a little happy when I think (Gregor) Blanco hit the home run. That won’t be forgotten.” – Braves veteran Chipper Jones responding to the thrusting taunts of Giants OF and former Brave Melky Cabrera during San Francisco’s 9-4 win over Atlanta.

Notes and tips

-- The Tigers have owned the AL Central in head-to-head action, winning 40 of their last 58 games against division opponents. The White Sox have won nine of their last 11 within the division.

-- The Orioles have dropped six consecutive series openers, and the Indians have won the last five times that Lowe took the mound in the first game of a series.

-- Spanish tennis star Rafael Nadal pulled out of the 2012 Olympic summer games after being set at +300 – the third-overall favorite. Andy Murray has moved to +350 and Roger Federer is priced at +188 behind Novak Djokovic at +150.

-- Edmonton is 3-7 in the last 10 meetings overall and is 0-3 in the newly renovated B.C. Place. The Eskies tried to prepare to overcome that this week by pumping crowd noise into their practice sessions.

Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

-- Since June 24, Orioles are 8-2 in games decided by 1-2 runs, 2-10 in games decided by 3+ runs. They're hanging on as best they can.

-- Big East has pocketed $19.5M from teams leaving, including $5M from TCU, which never played a game in the conference. Must be nice.

-- Brandt Snedeker was 150-1 to win the British Open Wednesday night; now he's 3-1, with 36 holes left to play.

-- Phil Mickelson was +11 thru two rounds, is probably home already.

-- I would weigh 30 pounds less if I lived in Las Vegas; how can people eat french fries when it 100 degrees out? I eat less in hot weather.

-- Rockets had Yao Ming, so they must know the economic value of what Jeremy Lin brings to them, in terms of money from selling stuff in Asia.

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Thoughts from NBA Summer League.....

13) What makes the NBA Summer League interesting is that guys are out there, playing for their basketball lives. Its highly competitive, not a lot of BS, because no one wants to get taken out of games. Its fun to watch, even if the results of the games are totally meaningless.

12) Spent half hour or so talking to a player agent, a guy whose clients play overseas; he was saying that a lot of guys who don't make it to the NBA still make high six-figure salaries in other countries. The majority of players in summer league are those guys, trying to get back to the NBA.

11) The agent was skeptical on Jeremy Lin being a great player, saying that non-athletic guards have a hard time in the NBA when they're #1-2 option on their team. If they're #3 or lower option, its a lot easier for them. This agent played college ball a while back. Thanks to him for his insight.

10) There was one female referee in roughly 80% of the games I saw; none of them stood out either way. Coaches don't carp much at the officials, its actually weird to see games where no one barks at the refs.

9) Speaking of coaches, Sam Cassell is coaching the Wizards' team, and yes, that makes me feel old.

8) Knicks' summer team has Mychal Thompson's son, who played college ball at Pepperdine, and Louis Farrakhan's grandson Mustafa, who played at Virginia. Young Farrakhan doesn't shoot the ball well at all.

7) Kemba Walker has the worst-looking pair of sneakers I've ever seen; they are flourescent orange on top, bright teal on the bottom. If the lights went out in the arena, they could play by the glare from those sneakers.

6) Games are four 10:00 quarters, which surprised me; thought the games would be 48:00, like NBA games. Some of these teams have 14-15 guys; it would make sense that the games be longer to give them more playing time.

5) Memphis may have found a steal in Kansas guard Josh Selby, who had 35 points in the game I saw him play, showing explosive moves around the hoop. Am curious to see how he does this fall.

4) Jimmer Fredette played Thursday in Thomas & Mack Arena, where he had several stellar games while playing for BYU. He played in front of 500 or so people Thursday afternoon, not the 17,000 he played in front of as a collegian. He struggles with his ball handling against pressure defenses.

3) Shooters stand out!!!! Lack of quality shooting is glaring; its why a guy like Fredette will play ten years in the league. He can fill it up.

2) LVH Superbook takes betting action on these games; guy in front of me stormed out of the Cox Arena when the Cavaliers got down 19 in the second quarter against Minnesota. Not sure what information you would use to put your money down on these games. Seems more like guesswork.

1) George Karl was doing double duty, watching the Nuggets' games, while his son Coby plays for Minnesota. Timberwolves have a ton of guys here, so hard to tell if young Karl has a good shot to make their roster.

Friday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

STREAKING

Ryan Dempster, Chicago Cubs (5-3, 1.86 ERA)

You know Theo Epstein is just thinking “cha-ching” every time this veteran righty takes the bump. Dempster, who is being shopped by the Cubs, is on a 33-inning scoreless streak entering Friday’s start.

The British Columbia native sports a tidy 0.85 WHIP (walks + hits per inning) over his last five starts, and the Cubs are 5-0 over that period.

Tommy Milone, Oakland Athletics (9-6, 3.54 ERA)

We were all wondering what Billy Beane was thinking when he traded starting pitchers Gio Gonzalez and Trevor Cahill last offseason. Obviously, he liked the players he was getting back in the deals, but he almost knew he had some arms in his rotation that could fill the void, like Milone.

The 25-year-old lefty has allowed no more than two earned runs in each of his last five starts. The A’s are 5-1 in his last six appearances and Milone has delivered quality four quality starts in his last five turns in the rotation.

SLUMPING

Johan Santana, New York Mets (6-6, 3.59 ERA)

This former Cy Young winner has pitched back-to-back duds for the Mets. He got knocked around for six earned runs all in the sixth inning in his last start and he gave up seven runs in just 4 2-3 innings the start before that.

James Shields, Tampa Bay Rays (8-6, 4.44 ERA)

Makes sense that a hurler with a moniker “Big Game” would have some of his worst performances in July. Shields has allowed four or more runs in five straight appearances and he’s be tagged for double-digit hits in four consecutive outings.

Braves at Nationals: What bettors need to know
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Atlanta Braves at Washington Nationals (-147, 7)

The Atlanta Braves are making a spirited surge in the National League East. Unfortunately for Atlanta, it has dropped six of eight meetings with current division penthouse tenant Washington. The Braves will look to better their standing on Friday when they open a four-game set on the road against the Nationals.

Atlanta posted its eighth win in 10 outings with a 3-2 triumph over San Francisco on Thursday to move within 3 1/2 games of Washington. Freddie Freeman and David Ross belted solo homers to account for two of the Braves' three hits on the day. The offense will certainly be tested by Stephen Strasburg, who will celebrate his 24th birthday on Friday.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, PTV (Atlanta), MASN (Washington)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Braves RH Tommy Hanson (10-5, 4.02 ERA) vs. Nationals RH Stephen Strasburg (10-4, 2.66)

Hanson is heating up with the weather after winning five of his last six decisions. The 25-year-old defeated Washington to start that stretch, tossing seven solid innings and striking out six in a 3-2 win on June 3. Hanson is 3-3 with a slim 1.14 WHIP versus Washington.

Strasburg snapped a career-worst three-game losing skid after scattering six hits over as many scoreless innings in Sunday's 4-0 win over Miami. The phenom lost his lone start versus Atlanta this season, yielding three runs and walking four in three innings on a sweltering 106-degree day on June 30. General manager Mike Rizzo declared earlier in the week that it is his decision when the club shuts down Strasburg. Washington previously had set a 160-inning limit.

TRENDS:

* Under is 4-0 in the last four meetings in Washington.
* Over is 17-6-2 in the last 25 meetings.
* Braves are 2-8 in the last 10 meetings.
* Braves are 1-4 in Hansons last five starts vs. Nationals.

WALK-OFFS

1. Washington's Ian Desmond is expected to return to the starting lineup on Friday. Desmond has been nursing a strained oblique, which has limited him to pinch-hitting duty over the last five games.

2. Freeman is batting .337 since returning from a right index finger injury. He is just 1-for-6 in his career versus Strasburg.

3. Slugger Ryan Zimmerman homered during Washington's 9-5 loss to the New York Mets on Thursday. Zimmerman has struggled mightily against Hanson, going 3-for-21 in his career.
