Reds & Brewers Continue Weekend Set In Cincinnati

No one game on a regular season slate single-handedly determines a team's success or failure. Wins and losses count the same in April as they do in September, and in the end those with the most wins advance into October while the others stay home.

However, there are individual games that define a team's character and resolve. Thursday's contest in Cincinnati just might be that game for the Reds.

Cincinnati heads into a big home series with the Milwaukee Brewers this weekend off a thrilling rally into the winner's circle against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Trailing six-zip heading into the bottom of the sixth, the Reds came back for a 7-6 victory thanks to Brandon Phillips' bat and solid work from four relievers.

The triumph gave Cincinnati a split in the 4-game set with Arizona, and maybe more importantly proved to the Reds that they can deliver on the offensive end without their leading hitter Joey Votto who will miss the next three weeks or so following knee surgery. Now comes the job of building on the momentum from Thursday as the Reds close out a long homestand with three against the Brew Crew.

Milwaukee and Cincinnati get things started Friday night at Great American Ball Park where the Reds are $1.20 favorites after opening in the -140 to -145 range. The Reds were sending Homer Bailey to the mound against Marco Estrada, and the total was listed at 8½-9. The outcome was still pending.

Saturday's second game (7:10 p.m. ET) pits Yovani Gallardo of the Brewers against the Reds' Bronson Arroyo. Early odds priced Cincinnati at -120 with an 8½-run total.

Arroyo had been dormant for 10 days when he climbed the hill in Cincinnati this past Monday, and whether it was the long layoff or simply a case of the Diamondbacks being in an offensive mood, the end result was a loss for the Reds. The veteran right-hander lasted just three innings and 48 pitches, few of which fooled Arizona batters.

The abbreviated outing followed an impressive 3-hit shutout in San Diego just before the all-star break, and ended a string of three consecutive quality starts for Arroyo. He has had success against the Brewers throughout his career, and both assignments vs. Milwaukee this season have resulted in Cincy wins with Arroyo combining for 14-1/3 frames and just four runs allowed.

Most of Gallardo's success vs. the Reds has come in Milwaukee. Pitching in Cincinnati has gone the other way, however, with the Brewers 1-5 in his last six starts at Great American Ball Park. Gallardo's 4.37 ERA isn't real ugly, but his big downfall has been the 18 walks in 35 innings.

He pitched well here in late-June (6 IP, 2 ER), but Milwaukee hitters couldn't overcome a fine performance by the Reds' Mat Latos.

A key to this series, as with most, will be the two bullpens, and Cincinnati has a pronounced edge right now. The Reds relief corps leads the majors with a 2.55 ERA and is anchored by the fire-balling Aroldis Chapman at the back end. Milwaukee relievers rank 28th in the majors with a 4.53 ERA, meanwhile, and a recent switch to Francisco Rodriguez as closer has brought anything but comfort to the Brewers. The former Angels and Mets closer did pick up back-to-back saves vs. the Cardinals earlier this week, but they were adventures to say the least.

The Reds have a 4-2 advantage against the Brewers in this year's series, winning two of three at Milwaukee in early-May and repeating that at home in late-June. The 'under' is also 4-2 (2-1 in each locale) and Cincinnati hasn't lost a season series to the Brew Crew since 2006.

Athletics Look To Stay Hot Against NY Yankees

The red-hot Oakland Athletics continue to turn heads around Major League Baseball as they host the mighty New York Yankees on Saturday night.

The Athletics’ Jarrod Parker will throw the first pitch at 9:05 p.m. (ET) and he’ll be opposed by the Yankees’ Phil Hughes. The Bronx Bombers are $1.20 road favorites on the Don Best Pro Odds and the total is eight, shaded to the ‘under.’

Oakland opened the 4-game set with a 4-3 win on Thursday. Rookie right-hander A.J. Griffin allowed just two earned runs over six innings and he’s part of a young, rebuilt staff by the always-resourceful Billy Beane.

The Yankees did have very good success at O.co Coliseum before Thursday. They had won nine in a row, including a 3-game sweep in late May, and covered the run line during the entire streak.

The Athletics are now 5-1 since the All-Star break and 11-2 overall in July, putting them right back in the wild-card chase despite a payroll just a fraction of the size of New York.

Note the Friday night result is still pending with the Yanks $1.25 favorites behind Ivan Nova.

Parker (6-4, 3.16 ERA) is 3-1 in his last four starts, but only a mediocre 4.44 ERA. He allowed four earned runs over six innings at Minnesota last Sunday, but was fortunate to get nine runs of support.

The 23-year-old right-hander was acquired from Arizona in the Trevor Cahill trade last December. He is 2-2 with a 2.45 ERA in eight home starts. However, the ‘over’ is 3-1 in his last four home outings, with run support again playing a part.

Hughes (9-7, 4.22 ERA) has nice numbers his last four starts at 2-1 with a 2.22 ERA. The ‘under’ is 3-1 in those contests. The team is 6-2 in his last eight outings overall after going 4-6 in the first two months.

The 26-year-old right-hander is 2-0 in seven lifetime appearances against the Athletics, but with a 6.08 ERA. Three of those outings came from the bullpen where he also registered a save.

New York has the best record in baseball and a huge 9-game cushion over everyone else in the AL East. The 147 team home runs easily leads the majors as well and anyone from 1-9 in the lineup is capable of going deep.

The Athletics’ .227 batting average is the worst in baseball, but they do get some timely hits. They have the fourth-best ERA (3.42) in the majors, which keeps them in games, and they will certainly battle for all nine innings (and more if necessary).

Note there are some heavy total betting trends for both teams. New York is +15 units for the season and Oakland +21 units.

Saturday FOX Tips

July 20, 2012

The Saturday FOX baseball card provides bettors with three fantastic matchups, including two in the American League that involves four potential playoff teams. In the National League, it's a rematch of the 2010 Championship Series between two clubs heading in different directions.

Giants at Phillies

These two teams send out their aces to the mound in the second matchup of this three-game series at Citizens Bank Park. San Francisco continues to keep a hold of the NL West lead over Los Angeles as both rivals are on the East Coast this weekend with the Dodgers in New York. The Phillies are running out of time inside the loaded NL East division and are on verge of missing the postseason for the first time since 2006.

Cole Hamels (11-4, 3.07 ERA) has been rumored to be moved before the trading deadline on July 31, but that hasn't stopped the former World Series MVP from pitching extremely well. Hamels put a halt to a three-start winless streak with an eight-inning gem at Colorado in his first outing since the All-Star break, a 5-1 drubbing of the Rockies as a $1.35 road favorite. The southpaw missed the Giants in Philadelphia's visit to the Bay Area in April, but Hamels pitched effectively in two starts against San Francisco in 2011. Hamels lost as a $1.60 home 'chalk' in a 2-1 defeat, in spite of putting together 7.2 innings of six-hit ball. He rebounded at AT&T Park one week later with a complete game triumph as a $1.20 road favorite.

The Giants counter with their stud right-hander as Matt Cain (10-3, 2.56 ERA) attempts to win on the road for the first time since mid-June. Nearly five weeks after tossing a perfect game, Cain shut down the anemic Astros' once again in his last trip to the mound, a 3-2 victory as a $2.20 favorite. In Cain's previous two starts away from AT&T Park, the righty has been the victim of a bullpen meltdown as he left losses at Washington and Oakland with leads after the seventh inning. Cain is one of the top pitchers to back during the daytime, owning a 7-0 record and ERA of 2.09 in matinee action.

Angels at Rangers

The AL West race to the finish between Texas and Los Angeles will likely be the most exciting in baseball. The Rangers are coming off consecutive division titles (and pennants), while the Angels have found a way to come up short when October rolled around. However, the Halos are finally finding their stride after a slow start out of the gate to trail by six games in the division heading into the weekend.

Yu Darvish (10-6, 3.96 ERA) started off on fire for the Rangers, but his struggles over the last two months have come away from Arlington. The Japanese product couldn't find the strike zone in the first inning of his last start at Seattle by walking two and hitting a batter. The Mariners put up four runs in that frame and never looked back in a 7-0 blowout of the Rangers as short home underdogs. Darvish is winless in five of his last six road outings, including a 3-2 defeat to the Angels in early June.

One night after ace Jered Weaver took the mound, the Angels send out another right-hander when Ervin Santana (4-9, 5.60 ERA) looks to get on track. Santana's problems began with an 0-6 start to the season, but things haven't been fixed as the 29-year old is winless in his last four trips to the rubber. The righty will see the Rangers for the first time this season, as Los Angeles lost three of Santana's four starts against the two-time defending AL Champions in 2011 (the only victory came in Arlington).

White Sox at Tigers

After Cy Young winners Jake Peavy and Justin Verlander pitched on Friday night in the opener of this crucial series, a worthy candidate to take the game's top pitching prize goes on Saturday afternoon. Chris Sale has stolen plenty of headlines with his unorthodox pitching style, but the Chicago southpaw continues to deliver strikeouts and wins for the division-leading Sox.

Sale (11-2, 2.11 ERA) ranks in the top three of the American League in WHIP (0.98), while his ERA is best in the Junior Circuit among qualified pitchers. The left-hander has allowed two earned runs or less in 12 starts this season, as the Sox are 6-2 in his six road outings (both losses by one run each). Sale lost at home to the Tigers back in April as a short favorite, 5-2, while his counterpart in that defeat will take the mound in Saturday's matchup.

Rick Porcello (6-5, 4.66 ERA) outdueled Sale in that road victory by tossing 7.2 innings of five-hit ball, the fifth straight time the Tigers have beaten the White Sox when the righty has started. Detroit is 4-0 in Porcello's last four starts overall, even though he allowed eight earned runs and 20 hits in previous two trips to the hill.

Saturday's betting notes: Dodgers' Kemp a Mets killer

Who’s hot?

San Diego Padres – The Padres have won four straight, taking three in a row from the Astros and opening a three-game set versus the Rockies with 9-2 win Friday night. San Diego has outscored foes 26-13 in that span.

Who’s not?

Houston Astros – As mentioned above, the Astros lost three in a row to the Padres then dropped their series opener with the Diamondbacks, 13-8, Friday night. Houston has just two wins in its last 10 outings.

Key stat

92 – The Miami Marlins have 92 stolen bases on the season – a MLB best – after swiping four bags in the series opener with the Pirates Friday.

Game of the day

Texas Rangers at Los Angeles Angels (+113, 8)

Injury not to be overlooked

Nick Swisher, New York Yankees – Swisher was pulled from Friday’s 3-2 loss to Oakland with a hip flexer. His status for Saturday is unknown. New York could replace him with Dewayne Wise in right field. Swisher is hitting .258 with 14 home runs and 58 RBIs.

Notable quotable

"For me, nothing is impossible. It's one of the challenges. If I abandon it, maybe who knows? Another four years to wait, maybe I don't have the opportunity." – Malaysian 10-meter air rifle shooter, Nur Suryani Mohamed Taibi, who will compete in the 2012 summer games even though she’s eight months pregnant.

Notes and quotes

-- Tiger Woods posted dual 67s in the first two rounds of the Open Championship - the eighth time he’s started a major with consecutive rounds in the 60s. In those past seven majors, Woods went on to win the tournament (2000 and 2002 U.S. Open; 2000, 2005 and 2006 British Open; 2000 and 2006 PGA Championship).

-- Los Angeles Dodgers slugger Matt Kemp is a .344 career hitter against the Mets with seven home runs and 26 RBIs in 43 games.

-- Over the last 10 games, the San Diego Padres bullpen has allowed just three runs over 27 innings.

-- Hamilton has covered the number in its past two games, including a 36-27 win over the Argos last week as a 3.5-point home favorite. The Tiger Cats are 1-1 at home so far while Montreal lost its lone road game in Calgary to open the season.

-- Canadian Chris Clements (+135) takes on America Matt Riddle (-160) at UFC 149 in Calgary, Alberta. Canadian fighters are just 4-9 on the main card when competing on home soil – and three of those four wins have come from Georges St-Pierre.

-- Umpire Gary Darling will work behind the plate for Saturday's AL West clash between the Rangers and Angels. The over is 15-7-1 in Darling's last 23 games behind home plate while the home side is 10-1 in his last 11 games calling balls and strikes.

Saturday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Streaking

Chris Sale, Chicago White Sox (11-2, 2.11 ERA)

Sale is creeping up the favorites list for AL Cy Young, taking a 10-game unbeaten streak into Saturday’s matinee with the Tigers. The ChiSox southpaw allowed 10 hits versus the Royals in his last start but didn’t let those translate to the scoreboard, holding K.C. to just one earned run.

Zach McAllister, Cleveland Indians (4-1, 3.17 ERA)

The Tribe is getting the most out of their young righty, going 6-2 when McAllister toes the rubber this season. He’s riding a six-game unbeaten streak heading into the weekend, posting a 4-0 record and not allowing more than three earned runs in a start during that span.

Slumping

Chris Capuano, Los Angeles Dodgers (9-5, 2.75 ERA)

Capuano started the season with a strong push but has hit a bit of a wall in recent outings, posting a 0-3 record in his last four starts. His most recent effort was a tough one to swallow, allowing four unearned runs to score on five errors versus the Padres.

Randall Delgado, Atlanta Braves (4-9, 4.52 ERA)

Delgado wasn’t won since June 6, going 0-4 in his last five appearances, and got booted from the rotation when Ben Sheets joined the roster. However, with the Braves playing a doubleheader Saturday, the right-hander is back. He went four innings against the Nats, allowing two earned runs (four unearned) off eight hits on June 29.

Rangers at Angels: What bettors need to know
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Texas Rangers at Los Angeles Angels (+113, 8)

The Los Angeles Angels expect to make a run at catching Texas in the American League West - and their homefield dominance of the Rangers is a big reason for their increased confidence. The Angels look for their 11th straight victory over Texas at Angel Stadium on Saturday after opening the three-game set with a 6-1 victory. Los Angeles is five games behind Texas but will still face the Rangers 10 more times after this series concludes.

Angels rookie Mike Trout homered in the opener and has scored a run in 12 consecutive games. Only two AL rookies have ever had a better streak – Jake Powell of the 1935 Washington Senators and Don Lenhardt of the 1950 St. Louis Browns. Trout, who leads the AL with a .354 average, can also match the Angels’ franchise record, set by Jim Edmonds, who scored in 13 straight games in 1995. Texas third baseman Adrian Beltre has four homers in 49 career at-bats against Los Angeles starter Ervin Santana.

TV: 4:05 p.m. ET, FOX

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rangers RH Yu Darvish (10-6, 3.96 ERA) vs. Angels RH Ervin Santana (4-9, 5.60)

Darvish has lost back-to-back starts after winning three consecutive outings. He was torched by the Seattle Mariners in his last start, allowing a season-worst seven runs and eight hits in 6 1/3 innings. Darvish has fanned 10 or more batters five times. He is 1-1 with a 3.86 ERA in two starts against the Angels this season.

Santana hasn’t won since June 16 and is 0-2 with a 7.52 ERA over his last four starts. He took a no-decision against the Detroit Tigers in his last outing when he gave up four runs (two earned) and eight hits in six innings. Santana hasn’t faced Texas this season and is 12-9 with a 5.53 ERA in 24 career starts against the Rangers.

TRENDS:

* Under is 4-1 in the last five meetings in Los Angeles.
* Angels are 7-3 in Santanas last 10 home starts vs. Rangers.
* Angels are 1-4 in Santanas last five starts vs. Rangers.

UMP TRENDS - Gary Darling

* Over is 15-7-1 in Darlings last 23 games behind home plate.
* Home team is 10-1 in Darlings last 11 games behind home plate.

WALK-OFFS

1. Texas 2B Ian Kinsler (.383 in 47 at-bats), SS Elvis Andrus (.355 in 31 at-bats) and 1B Michael Young (.351 and three homers in 74 at-bats) have all fared well against Santana.

2. Trout is 3-for-6 with a homer against Darvish, and is batting .400 in 14 career games against Texas.

3. The Rangers expect to activate C Yorvit Torrealba on Saturday. He has been away due to his wife giving birth to their daughter on Tuesday.

Four MLB teams ready to blow up their rosters
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We’ve come to the part of the MLB season in which struggling clubs begin eyeing the dynamite plunger and listening to their inner Wile E. Coyote.

Baseball bettors have already witnessed the Houston Astros’ self-imposed demolition, dealing longtime star Carlos Lee to Miami and sending pitchers J.A. Happ, Brandon Lyon and David Carpenter to the Blue Jays. At 34-59, it was just a matter of time before the Astros blew themselves up.

Houston isn't the only team looking to cut its losses on the 2012 season. Here are four other MLB clubs ready to blow up the roster and start looking ahead to 2013:

Records and stats as of Friday, July 20.

Philadelphia Phillies (41-52, -23.21 units)

The 2012 campaign couldn’t have gone any worse for Phillies bettors, and it might only get nastier if the team decides to pull the plug on its current roster. Mainstays like Jimmie Rollins, Shane Victorino and Carlos Ruiz have all been rumored traded bait, along with struggling ace Cliff Lee. Philadelphia is hoping to hang on to starter Cole Hamels, but nothing is written in stone. With an aging roster and consistent problems providing run support, the Phillies brass may wash their hands of their year’s squad and reload for 2013.

Miami Marlins (44-48, -11.00 units)

The 2012 season was supposed to be a fresh start for the Fish, with a new name, new ballpark and new talent. However, Miami has failed to live up those expectations and the front office is threatening to blow up the team if things don’t turn around - like right now. Hanley Ramirez and struggling closer Heath Bell have been talked about in a deal for Boston’s Carl Crawford and Giancarlo Stanton has shown up in rumors, with the team looking to sell the slugger while his stock is high.

Arizona Diamondbacks (44-48, -7.98 units)

Justin Upton is the hot commodity with the Red Sox and Pirates licking their chops over the talented outfielder. He’s not the only D-backs member being shopped around. Shortstop Stephen Drew, who returned from an ankle injury last month, has rumored suitors like the Tigers, who are also interested in third baseman Ryan Roberts. Arizona should know better than any team that it's not out of the race in the NL West after last year’s comeback. But it does seem like the D-backs are packing it in.

Chicago Cubs (38-53, -7.03 units)

We knew the Cubs were a project when Theo Epstein took the reins in the Windy City. Chicago has rightfully been the center of swirling trade rumors following the All-Star break, most of those centered around pitchers Ryan Dempster and Matt Garza. The Cubbies may also deal Alfonso Soriano to a club looking for a big bat, like the Giants, and part ways with Bryan LaHair and Geovany Soto. Chicago is reportedly focused on getting back prospects for these moves.
