Yanks are playing the Mariners tonight, and the Yanks acquired Ichiro Suzuki today.

Obviously his best days are behind him

you never know, seattle has sucked for so long, the playoff race and the big city might light a fire under him for 1 more push. he just needs to get his obp up, he doesnt need to hit hrs or drive in a ton of runs. just score and add some steals

A postive steal on defense no matter what. Watch him come alive with the rest. Seattle was depressing him since he made that I might as well be in the stands drinking a beer crack. Completly hilarious.

looks like a pretty big contract. I think he will do well in NY. Brett Gardner will have to be traded.

think your wrong on a few things here. first ichiro was a free agent at the end of this yr. so well have to wait and see how he does before they possibly resign him. if the yanks get rid of any outfielder, it will be swisher, not gardner. the yanks tried bidding on the cuban rf that just went to the cubs a few weeks back to be his replacement, but lost the bid.

Yes, I'm wrong. I read this and thought he was signed for 2013....

No need to trade Gardner as long as Ichiro is gone in 2013. Can't really retain both when healthy.

About biographical information

but he is a free agent after this season, and the NYY only pay him 2.2 million.

They got rid of Wise. Little downside picking up Ichiro. Nice to get Ibanez out of left.

This is Swisher's contract year. I wouldn't be surprised if the Yanks let him walk and tried to sign Ichiro to a 1 or 2 year deal after the season. Having Ichiro chasing 3000 hits would be a big draw plus great motivation for him personally. The Yanks have plenty of pop on their infield plus Granderson. Gardner and Ichiro combined with Granderson in the OF would pretty nasty next year both on the bases and defensively.

only way swish stays is if he takes around a 50% pay cut, if not he will probably end up on a team like hou or sd for 8 million a yr, but not sniff the playoffs

I agree. I'm a Yankee fan and I like Swish, but he just doesn't quite fit with this team. Maybe it's just me.

hes a defensive liability, he is slow on the base paths, and does not hit for avg. he has some pop in the bat and a good clubhouse guy overall, but he will rather have to decide to take a pay cut and remain on a contender or holdout and play for a team unlikely to see the playoffs before he hangs it up

Nice moment in the game at Seattle last night... Ichiro's first at bat the crowd gave him a big standing ovation... the pitcher Millwood stepped back off the mound so Ichiro could acknowledge the applause. Ichiro took off his helmet and made a couple of bows Japanese style. I thought that was pretty neat.

I think Girardi needs to rework the batting order. Ichiro should move up and A-Rod down.

Something like this....

1 Jeter
2 Ichiro ( if playing RF)
3 Granderson
4 Cano
5 Texeria
6 A-Rod
7 Ibanez as DH
8 Jones or other in LF
9 Catcher

Some changes with Swisher in there, but A-Rod needs to be dropped and put the fast Ichiro ahead of the main HR guys.

brett gardner is twice the player as the current form ichiro.

It doesn't matter. I first thought that Ichiro was signed for 2013, he is not, Gardner is gone for 2012, Ichiro is a perfect gamble to fill in for a couple of months....little risk in only paying him 2.2 million. I think he will respond and hit like .300 , steal bases, play +defense.

The NYY can decide what to do in the off-season. This is a nice pick-up that cost nothing.

Agree with Doug, imo great pickup without much risk and at rather low cost for this year. Just hope they don't let Gardner go in the offseason, in my opinion one of the most underrated players in the game: Great defense, always playing hard, threat on the bases, sees a bunch of pitches and hits for avg and draws walks.
