Despite concerted Democratic attacks on his business record, Republican challenger Mitt Romney scores a significant advantage over President Obama when it comes to managing the economy, reducing the federal budget deficit and creating jobs, a national USA TODAY/Gallup Poll finds.

By more than 2-1, 63%-29%, those surveyed say Romney's background in business, including his tenure at the private equity firm Bain Capital, would cause him to make good decisions, not bad ones, in dealing with the nation's economic problems over the next four years.

The findings raise questions about Obama's strategy of targeting Bain's record in outsourcing jobs and hammering Romney for refusing to commit to releasing more than two years of his tax returns. Instead, Americans seem focused on the economy, where disappointment with the fragile recovery and the 8.2% unemployment rate are costing the president.

•Republicans and Republican-leaning independents are much more enthusiastic about the election, an important factor in persuading supporters to vote. By 18 points, 51%-33%, they report being more enthusiastic than usual about voting. In contrast, Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents by 4 points say they are less enthusiastic than usual, 43%-39%.

•A record number of Americans express skepticism about the activist role of government Obama espouses; 61% say the government is trying to do too many things that should be left to individuals and businesses. That's the highest number since Gallup began asking the question in 1992.

•The Democratic attacks on Romney seem to have had little effect on voters' assessments of him. In February, 53% said the former Massachusetts governor had the personality and leadership qualities a president should have; now 54% do. Then, 42% said they agreed with Romney on the issues that mattered most to them; now 45% do.

bam pow ouch wow, R U JK?

if on election day the most important issue to Americans is the economy, and if they believe by a > 2-1 margin Romney would do a better job, Obama can't win.

throw in voter enthusiasm being heavily tilted towards republicans and people thinking government is getting too big, Obama's legs have been amputated, he can't win

there's a reason Obama's campaign is in full force desperation mode, he knows it too

the polls can and do change, there's a political lifetime before election day, but it's trending bad

not sure if I should call it Jimmy Carter II, or 2010 All Over Again. Just like those two elections, this is going to get ugly

I need to point out that this is a poll of "adults", and not the much more reliable poll of "likely voters".

didn't read the cross tabs, but don't expect the left leaning USA today to have right wing bias

also, republicans tend to do better in polls of LV as opposed to polls of RV or A, so the results may even be worse with a more involved polling population

DEAC, the problem is these guys are not getting their usual confrontations in the poli forum anymore(except from vit) because most of us are sick of their one sided ways. So now they have to bring their garbage polls to the general public to see if they can stir up some shit here...They just looking for a fresh audience

The sign that obama is in big trouble is the poll #'s, poll after poll has him in the mid 40's - Bush was in exactly the same place. An incumbant needs to poll 50% or higher to be comfortable since most late voters go to the challenger, especially so if the economy sucks.

Obama needs to get his #'s close to 50% or he has no chance, what was that intrade # 3 months ago?
If this is true why isn't Romney getting pounded at +150. 6kish just sitting there at Betmaker currently. Obama for the limit here please.

Because it's hard to beat an incumbant, and because Romney has not been leading in the polls(2 or 3 pt leads are in the margin of error). Let me ask you this, do you hear alot of people who say Obama has done a good job? Anyone high on him? The bloom is off the rose, does anyone think he's real smart because he talks well with a teleprompter?

He's been exposed for what he is, sure, he'll get the hardcore voters like always, but all those people who were sick of Bush, unhappy with the wars, who wanted a change after 8 years, all those people who he got last time, he probably loses a fair chunk this time.

Good luck going all in on a weak incumbent, during a terrible economy, I would advise caution.

Things won't change until the parties start working together again instead of working against each other. Makes no difference who is President as long as everyone is working together to get things done. You Willie have even said it yourself that the Tea Party's main objective in 2010 was to take control of the house for the reason of STOPPING Obama, not helping him(which is actually their job). Until our government becomes UNITED again, we will continue to be in the mess we are in no matter who is President...
