Brewers & Phillies Continue Series In Philadelphia

Neither team is in the thick of the postseason hunt, removing some of the sheen on this week's series in Philadelphia between the Phillies and Milwaukee Brewers. That doesn't mean there aren't some intriguing pitching matchups, however, and the mound clash for Game 2 is a good example.

Philadelphia and Milwaukee continue their 3-game set with a 7:05 p.m. (ET) first pitch on Tuesday. Southpaw Cliff Lee will deliver that toss for the Phillies and the Brewers counter with Zack Greinke. Early numbers from the Don Best Pro Odds listed Philly as $1.40 chalk and 7½ for the total.

The first meeting of the season between the two clubs was set for Monday and still pending at press. The Phillies were strongly favored at -200 on the MLB money line with Roy Halladay on the hill. Randy Wolf was slated for the Brewers and the 7½-run total was priced 20 cents 'over.'

Milwaukee started the current road trip in very poor fashion by getting swept by the Reds in Cincinnati. That killed any momentum the Brew Crew started to build after taking four of six at home from the Pirates and Cards just following the all-star break. The Brewers reached Philadelphia six games under .500 (44-50, -14.5 units) and 10.5-games behind Cincy in fourth place of the NL Central.

The Phillies would love to be just six games below par and in fourth place of their division. Easily the most disappointing team of 2012 – and by far the biggest drain on bettors at -25.4 units – Philadelphia is all by itself in the NL East basement, 14 games south of the front-running Washington Nationals.

Greinke will be making his first start in 10 days after taking the ball to begin three consecutive Brewers contests before the layoff. An early ejection led to the right-hander starting Milwaukee's final two tilts prior to the all-star break, and he came out of the break to get things rolling for the team in the second half. Brewers skipper Ron Roenicke then decided to skip Greinke's last turn through the rotation, a decision that might have also had to do with the club trying to re-sign and/or trade the impending free agent.

Tuesday will be Greinke's first start against the Phillies since his '04 rookie season when he went six innings at Citizens Bank Park and allowed three runs in a 4-2 loss while with the Royals.

Lee didn't pick up his first win of the season until July 4 in New York against the Mets. The Phils have dropped seven of his last eight assignments, and 12 of 16 overall in 2012. Three career outings vs. the Brewers have resulted in a 4.74 ERA, two no-decisions (both Philadelphia wins) and a loss.

Philadelphia has won 10 of the past 14 meetings with Milwaukee, though the Brewers did take two of the three games played in the City of Brotherly Love a year ago. Both of those Milwaukee wins slid 'over' the total, and neither Greinke nor Lee factored into the decision in any of the seven clashes in 2011.

No new injuries are being reported by either squad, and Tuesday night's forecast for Philly calls for clear skies, temps in the low-80s for the start of the game and a 12 mph NNW breeze (in from left-center).

Deroit Tigers On The Prowl In Cleveland

The Detroit Tigers are one of the hottest teams in baseball and look to continue their momentum Tuesday night when they start a key 9-game road trip at the Cleveland Indians.

The pitching matchup at 7:05 p.m. (ET) is Detroit’s Doug Fister against Cleveland’s Ubaldo Jimenez. Expect to see the Tigers as a 120-130 road favorite on the Don Best odds screen with a total of nine runs.

The Tigers’ new favorite holiday must be Fourth of July. They were 39-42 heading into that day, but have gone 13-2 since and vaulted to the top of the AL Central standings. Only three of those games came away from Motown, so this trip is a proving ground.

Slugger Miguel Cabrera is having a monster year with a .330 batting average, 23 homers and 79 RBIs despite moving over to play third base after the Prince Fielder signing. The Tigers also are not resting with late-breaking news they had acquired right-hander Anibal Sanchez and 2B Omar Infante from the Miami Marlins for top pitching prospect Jacob Turner and a couple of minor leaguers.

Cleveland is 3-7 in the second half and 4.5 games behind in the division pending its Monday finale with Baltimore. The Indians have dropped their last four games in scoring a total of six runs. That includes the first three in the O’s series.

Fister (4-6, 4.04 ERA) was a virtual piñata before the All-Star break, but the switch has gone on with two wins since and just two earned runs allowed over 15 innings. Don Best Sports analyst Pat Williams thinks Fister should continue to shine going forward after battling injuries in the first half.

Jimenez (8-9, 5.24 ERA) has been known to pitch well before the All-Star break in previous years and then fade. His ERA this year was a reasonable 4.50 before two horrible second-half starts at Toronto and Tampa Bay (a combined 13 earned runs over eight innings).

Don Best’s Williams points out that Jimenez has been better at home at Progressive Field (4-3, 3.66 ERA), but believes he’s a risky proposition in the second half, especially compared to the emerging Fister.

The Indians have dominated the Tigers this year at 5-1, including a 3-game home sweep back in May that all went ‘under’ the total. Detroit is just 5-16 in the last 21 games in Cleveland overall.

Despite those recent betting trends, Williams thinks Detroit should have success this series on the way to the AL Central title, with the Chicago White Sox the only real competition.

Don’t forget to check out the Don Best Pro Odds for all the MLB action, plus other sports just around the corner like the NFL and college football.

Dodgers seek 6th straight win Tuesday

LOS ANGELES DODGERS (53-44)

at ST. LOUIS CARDINALS (50-46)

First pitch: Tuesday, 8:15 p.m. EDT
Line: St. Louis -125, Los Angeles +115, Total: 7

The Cardinals will look to cool down a red-hot Dodgers squad in the second game of a four-game set on Tuesday night.

Los Angeles has won five games in a row by a combined score of 33-20, the last four of which have been on the road. Clayton Kershaw kicked off the winning streak and is following up his Cy Young performance of last season with another strong year, sporting a 2.74 ERA and 1.06 WHIP. In his past two starts, he has gone 14 innings, allowing just two earned runs on 11 hits with 13 K’s. On Tuesday he faces Adam Wainwright, who has struggled this season with a 4.42 ERA and 7-10 record (team is 7-12), with that ERA ballooning to 5.01 at home. Despite losing his past two starts, he has been better lately with a 2.79 ERA in July. However, the Dodgers have beaten St. Louis eight straight times and are 4-0 so far in the season series. Even though the Cardinals are at home, they should not be favored in this game against the surging Dodgers, who have found their groove again with star outfielder Matt Kemp back in the fold. Kemp has a .441 BA, 3 HR and 11 RBI in his past eight games versus St. Louis. Take underdog LOS ANGELES to win this one.

This three-star FoxSheets trend also favors the Dodgers:

ST. LOUIS is 8-21 (27.6%, -18.5 Units) against the money line when playing against a team with a winning record this season. The average score was ST LOUIS 3.4, OPPONENT 5.2 - (Rating = 3*).

Kershaw has pitched very well against the Cardinals in his career with a 4-2 record, 2.74 ERA and 1.28 WHIP in 10 career starts. The most recent of those starts was in May 19 when he threw a complete-game shutout, yielding six hits and no walk in a 6-0 victory for Los Angeles. Kershaw is 2-1 with a 1.78 ERA in four career starts at Busch Stadium, tossing six shutout innings with eight strikeouts in St. Louis last season. Although his ERA is more than a run higher on the road (3.38) compared to at home (2.36), he has a better WHIP (1.03) and strikeout rate (10.1 K’s/9) away from Dodger Stadium. Kershaw averages an impressive 6.7 innings per game this season, but should he need it, he has a strong bullpen behind him that sports a 3.23 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 263 K’s in 270 innings.

Wainwright has strong career numbers versus the Dodgers with a 3.02 ERA and 1.16 WHIP in eight starts. The stats are even better in five home games in this series, as he’s 2-1 with an 0.70 ERA, including a streak of 14 straight shutout innings. However, he has not faced Los Angeles since July 17, 2010, when he tossed six shutout innings, allowing just five hits and one walk. Still, he faced the Dodgers in the 2009 postseason when he allowed just one earned run in eight frames with seven strikeouts. The bullpen supporting him is less efficient than the St. Louis one though, with a 4.30 ERA and 1.35 WHIP, converting just 60% of its save chances. And Wainwright usually needs more bullpen help than Kershaw does, only going 6.1 innings per start and just 5.9 at home.

Tuesday’s betting tips: Bulls’ Rose sidelined until March 2013?

Weather to watch

Oakland Athletics at Toronto Blue Jays: Wind blowing in at 11 mph on Tuesday at Rogers Centre. Retractable roof should be open due to only a 10 percent chance of rain.

Los Angeles Dodgers at St. Louis Cardinals: Temperatures are expected to soar to 101 F at Busch Stadium on Tuesday. The wind will also be blowing out to left field at 10 mph.

Boston Red Sox at Texas Rangers: A 13 mph wind is expected to blow in from right field under sunny skies at Rangers Ballpark. Temperatures are also expected to reach near 100 F.

Who’s hot?

Nationals third baseman Ryan Zimmerman went 15-for-30 last week with five homers and 8 RBIs.

Diamondbacks left fielder Jason Kubel had four home runs in six at-bats when he led off the second inning with a bases-empty home run against Houston on Sunday. Kubel also hit three homers in a 12-3 victory over the Astros on Saturday.

Who’s not?

The Houston Astros have dropped six consecutive games and are 1-9 in their last 10 contests heading into action Monday night.

The Chicago White Sox have lost five straight games heading into Monday’s contest with the Twins.

Key stat

Pirates center fielder Andrew McCutchen is on pace to hit .372, 38 home runs, and 114 RBIs. Only six players have hit those marks in a season: Ruth, Hornsby, Gehrig, Helton, Musial, and Klein.

Game of the day

Nationals @ Mets

Injury not to be overlooked

The Chicago Tribune reports that Bulls guard Derek Rose could be sidelined until March 2013 with an ACL injury. The Las Vegas Hotel and Casino has the Bulls listed at 8/1 to win the 2012/13 NBA Championship. Only the Miami Heat, Oklahoma City Thunder and Los Angeles Lakers have better odds.

Notable quotable

"He's not Willie Mays (Angels outfielder Mike Trout), he's a pretty good player, but I think the comparisons have to stop. Let the kid play. When he's been here five years, six years, then you can start doing that."-Texas Rangers manager Ron Washington on Trout’s recent comparisons by the media to Willie Mays.

Notes and Tips

Bettors who have picked the under are 12-1-2 in the St. Louis Cardinals’ last 15 games. The under is also hitting at a 58 percent clip over the last seven days.

The New York Rangers acquired forward Rick Nash from the Columbus Blue Jackets in exchange for Brandon Dubinsky, Artem Anisimov, Tim Erixon and a first-round draft pick Monday. Sports Interaction currently has the Rangers listed as 10/1 favorites to win the Stanley Cup next season. Only the Kings (9/1) and Penguins (6/1) have better odds.

Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

Some knowledge on early season trends in the NFC West.........

NFC West

Cardinals

Home: Much better since they got the dome; won five of last six HO, but since ’88, are still just 3-10 vs spread as favorite in HOs, with five of last six HOs going over the total.

Road: Won three of last four AOs, covering all four, after 0-6 skid (1-4-1 vs spread) before that. Redbirds are 9-6-1 vs spread in last `6 tries as a dog in AOs. Five of last six AOs stayed under total.

Rams
Home: Rams lost last five HOs (0-5 vs spread) by average score of 34-14; over is 9-5-1 in their last 15 HOs. They’re 0-4-1 vs spread last five times their HO wasn’t in Week 1.

Road: Rams are even worse in AOs, losing last ten AOs (1-9 vs spread) by average score of 26-12, with five of last six staying under the total. Last time Rams won season opener was 18-10 home win (+3.5) over Denver in 2006.

49ers
Home: 7-1-1 vs spread in last nine HOs, 3-0-1 in last four as favorite, 4-1 in last five as dog- they’re 5-2 in last seven SU. This year is only second time in last 8 years their HO is a non-divisional game.

Road: Won four of last five AOs, covered six of last eight; 7-1-1 vs spread in last nine tries as road dog in AO. Under is 3-1-1 in last five AOs. Since ’94, they’re 2-6 vs spread in Week 1 road games.

Seahawks
Home: Won/covered eight of last nine HOs, winning last three by combined score of 72-16. Under is 9-1-1 in their last 11 HOs. Since ’88, 2-4 vs spread as dog in HOs.

Road: Since ’00, Hawks are 4-8 in AO’s, allowing 6-0-7-6 points in the wins. Lost last five AOs (0-6 vs spread in last six) by average score of 29-14. Under is 19-5 in their last 24 HOs, but 2-3 in last five. Home team won their last five season openers.

**********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind............

13) College football practice starts pretty soon, like within a week in most places; will be interesting to see how many Penn State players are going to be poached by other schools. They're eligible to play right away.

That said, I don't think these sanctions are worse than a death penalty; as time goes one, the memory of this will fade somewhat, but if they had to shut the while program down, that would've hurt them for decades.

12) Could someone please explain to me why Ernie Els wasn't invited to the Masters this year? He's not good enough to get a special invite? Bull.

11) Its easy to feel bad for Adam Scott for losing the British Open, but he still bagged $812,202; not a bad consolation prize. He'll win a major.

10) If you think athletes are overpaid, and many of them are, consider that Mariah Carey is getting $18M to be a panelist on American Idol this fall. 18 freakin' million dollars. For what?

9) When Matt Cain/Cole Hamels both homered in the third inning in their game Saturday, it was the first time since 1990 that opposing pitchers hit homers in the same inning (Fernando Valenzuela/Kevin Gross).

8) In their last two games, Mets were outscored 11-0, just in 10th inning. How about going out and adding a relief pitcher, just for the hell of it?

7) For what its worth, Atlanta Braves are 0-12 on Monday this season.

6) Akron basketball coach Keith Dambrot signed a 10-year contract to stay with the Zips, good move for a mid-major program. Dambrot first became well-known when he was Lebron James' high school coach.

5) Field goal kickers were 29-30 against the Jets LY; the only miss was from 56 yards out. That doesn't happen a lot.

4) Joe Torre once grounded into four double plays in one game while he was with the Mets; Felix Millan got on base in front of him all four times. .

3) With Dave Duncan retired, Curt Young gets my vote for best pitching coach in the majors. How many big league teams have a stellar reliever who was a minor league first baseman at this time LY? (Sean Doolittle)

2) Wonder how Ichiro Suzuki feels about batting 8th in the Bronx; after he played 1,828 games for the Mariners, his first three post-Seattle games were against the Mariners. Has to feel a little weird for him, especially since he had never batted below third in the order in this country.

1) Guess I feel bad for Penn State football coach Bill O'Brien; this time LY, he was Tom Brady's offensive coordinator; now, he's the captain of what almost has to be a sinking ship. He's an innocent victim of this mess.

Tuesday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

STREAKING

Felix Hernandez, Seattle Mariners (8-5, 2.82 ERA)

King Felix has returned to the Felix of old. The 2010 AL Cy Young Award winner threw eight innings of one-run ball, scattering eight hits to pick up his eighth win of the season against the Royals on Thursday. Even more impressive was his complete-game shutout over the high-powered Texas Rangers in his previous start on July 14. The 26-year-old should be up to an even tougher test Tuesday against the visiting Bronx Bombers.

Edinson Volquez, San Diego Padres (6-7, 3.34 ERA)

The Padres are finally starting to reap the benefits of the offseason trade that saw former staff ace Mat Latos back his bags for Cincinnati. Volquez, who was the key piece coming back to San Diego in the deal, has been rock solid in his last five starts.

Volquez threw a one-hit shutout against the lowly Astros on Thursday to notch his sixth win of the season and lower his ERA to 1.71 in July. There may be some value for his next road start in San Francisco on Tuesday.

SLUMPING

Gio Gonzalez, Washington Nationals (12-5, 3.32 ERA)

Gonzalez hasn’t looked anything like an All-Star over his last five starts. The southpaw surrendered six earned runs in 3.1 innings pitched Thursday against the Mets, ballooning his ERA to 5.75 in July.

To make matters worse, the struggling lefty may not get much run support Tuesday in New York. Knuckleballer R.A. Dickey is a perfect 6-0 at home and is seeking his league-leading 14th win of the campaign.

Ubaldo Jimenez, Cleveland Indians (8-9, 5.24 ERA)

The Indians believed they hit the jackpot last July when they acquired Jimenez from the Colorado Rockies. The 28-year-old is rarely clocked at over 95 mph on the radar gun these days, a major decline from the fireballer who regularly registered triple digits earlier in his career.

Jimenez not only leads the AL in walks, but boasts an ugly 7.48 ERA in July. The righty has surrendered 18 earned runs in just four starts this month. Batters are taking advantage of his control issues, swatting five homers during that span. Prince Fielder and Miguel Cabrera will be licking their lips when the Tigers roll into town Tuesday.

Rounding the bases: The best bets in the big leagues
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Every week we take a look at the hottest and coldest teams as well as the best over and under bets in Major League Baseball.

Hot Team: Oakland Athletics

Last week: 5-1
Season record: 51-44
Upcoming schedule: at Toronto, at Baltimore

Skinny: The A’s are fresh off a four-game sweep of the New York Yankees and are now 9-1 in their last 10 games and 14-2 in the 16 overall. And they’re doing that with lowest scoring offense in the American League and the worst batting average (.228) in the majors.

So how are they winning all these games? Well the eight one-run games during their hot streak, including two walk-off wins in the sweep of the Yanks.

Cold Team: New York Mets

Last week: 1-5
Season record: 47-48
Upcoming schedule: vs. Washington, at Arizona

Skinny: The Mets pitching staff is letting the team down in a big way. The club carries a bloated 5.68 ERA in July – the third worst in baseball – and opponents are batting .291 off them. To make matters worse, the bullpen has blown three of the four save opportunities the club’s had for month.
Outfielder Daniel Murphy has nine hits in his last 11 at-bats but until the pitching improves the Mets will continue to drop in the NL East standings.

Over team: Arizona Diamondbacks

Last week: 4-1-1
Season O/U record: 45-47-3
Upcoming schedule: vs. Colorado, vs. Mets

Skinny: Think the Twins miss Jason Kubel’s bat? We know for sure the Diamondbacks are thankful to have the hefty outfielder in their lineup. Kubel has cracked four homers in his last two games and has six big flies in his last 22 at-bats. Arizona scored 33 runs in three games against the Astros. We’ll see this week if that’s just a Houston sucking thing or if the D’backs have caught fire.

Under team: Milwaukee Brewers

Last week: 5-0-1
Season O/U record: 50-40-4
Upcoming schedule: at Philadelphia, vs. Washington

Skinny: The starting pitching staff is really coming through for the Brewers. Milwaukee has received quality starts in five of its last seven games. Its bullpen – which has really been a sore spot this campaign – is holding up. The relief staff has surrendered just three runs in 12 innings pitched since manager Ron Roenicke took John Axford out of the closer role. The under is now 6-0-1 in the team’s last seven games.
