Tuesday: An ugly 4-6, - 8.2 units. I still liked this card. Who would have known that Saunders and Will Smith would pitch like they did? Oh well, almost no excuses.

Washington-1. 4 units. The Nats are putting the nail in the coffin in this one. They can devastate a team in any series with great pitching each and every game. As with other teams, the Mets are shifting from competitive to just ordinary. Other than Atlanta, Strasburg has been deadly this year. He has learned how to take something off his fastball, giving it more movement and trust his very good off speed pitches. He will pitch to contact in parks like Citi Field and Marlins Park, which are more pitcher's parks. Yet batters are not making much good contact, hitting .232 and only 3 HRs in his last 3 starts(2 of those were in Coors). Strasburg also adds a nice bat. The Nats have a huge advantage in BPs. The Mets will likely need it since Hefner is more of a 5 inning pitcher who will need amazing command to stay in this game. The Nats saw him in June while the Mets haven't seen Strasburg since April 11th. Since the Mets hitting attack has also regressed a bit, this makes this Strasburg/ strong BP combination even better. The Nats would love nothing better than to make the Braves and Mets a distant second. Bryce Harper is also becoming the hitter scouts thought he would be.

Yankees: -1. 3 units.
Yankees-1/2 First 5 IP. One unit. The Mariners had an absolutely horrible hitting series in Tampa but won 2 out of 3 on some timely hitting and even worse Rays' hitting. They continue to flog around at pitches in Seattle. But since Felix and their BP held the Yankees down Tuesday, they won another close one. This Seattle team though is so overmatched(especially at home) vs. this Yankee lineup(even though they aren't hot anymore). I've watched much of the last 2 games, and have seen the Mariners time and time again swing at bad pitches on good batter's counts, chase terrible pitches, and barely contact pitcher's mistakes. Saunders has saved their butt(as he did in Tampa), but even he is not anything more than an average hitter. Iwakuma has a good line vs. the Rays because the Rays looked lost as they have going back many weeks. The Yankees will patiently wait for Iwakuma to make a mistake, as he is known to do, and hit him hard- or they'll take bases on balls as the Yankees are also known to do. They are the perfect team to face him- he tries to nibble, but misses too much- then gets desperate for a strike and gets hammered for a HR. 9 HR in just 46 IPs. Nova has the good sinker going and is extremely battle tested in the AL East and vs. LAA, Mets, Wash, ATL, etc. Seattle is the poorest hitting team he has seen in a long while.

Cubs ML. First 5 IP. One unit. Man, the Pirates are just awful. They look like the Pirates of the first 2 months. Dempster vs. Correia is great matchup for the Cubs in the first 5. The Cubs might sweep here.

Oakland. ML. One unit. Toronto is the enigma team. They can sweep the Red Sox in Fenway and then come home and look awful for this series. They've been doing stuff like that all year. They need an intensity check. Toronto hasn't seen Griffin who has pitched very well against some good hitting teams. He'll go 6 and then the very good A's BP will come in to finish off the game. Romero has looked a little better, at least until his last start. Too many walks and homers- too many big innings. The A's can hit homers as well as anybody.

Rays/ Orioles: under 8. One unit. Price is "ON" his game and the Orioles might be lucky to get a run or two off of him. Miguel Gonzalez has also been on his game and is extremely composed for a rookie. Since the Rays are even colder than the O's, they might be lucky to score. Both BPs are decent. Also, both of these teams have some really poor hitters in their lineups- guys that strike out easily, or have no power or just have a"Mariner-type" approach at the plate. Plate discipline is lacking.

I also love the nats today, gl! Strasburg is just like Yu Danish from texas. Only the Mariners can hit him, just like only the braves can hit stras.

Rays/O's total jumped up to 9. Weird.

This is like the game last weekend that defied reason on the total-can't remember which one. It must be a home umpire thing. Does anyone know how to find out who the home umpire is before the game. I know they protect this info prior to the series, but usually can be figured out after the first game. This ump must have a tiny strike zone???

Arizona TT over 4.5. One unit. D-Backs are hot, have seen Francis a lot, and have hit him well, career-wise. Francis is also likely to regress to his mean, which means he'll be getting hit more often the rest of the year. D-Backs are one of the best hitting teams vs. LHP and in their park, even better. Rockies BP will come into play as Francis usually goes 5 IPs.

Extremely frustrating watching Yanks-M's play. Nova had a difficult first, but has pretty much stifled the mariners. Yankees are getting guys on every inning only to DP the rally or get caught stealing. Iwakuma has control issues, but Yanks are swinging and ground balling his pitches. Wouldn't be surprised to see a 2-1 final.

M's have 2 hits so far. Yanks have cooled mightily like the Pirates and Rangers and Red Sox. The new hot hitting teams are: Arizona, maybe Phils, Tigers, maybe White Sox, ???? Any thoughts appreciated.

Big eighth inning by the Yanks. They had men on base all day long, and I was worried it was going to be one of those plays where they just didn't cash in their opportunities. Just need six outs worth of good pitching from here on out. I'm on the Yanks RL\.

And Fred, Zona is definitely a very hot team right now. They are atrocious on the road, but are very good at beating bad teams at home. The Astros and Rockies certainly qualify. They host the reeling Mets this weekend, which might be a tricky series to predict. After that, the D-backs start a road trip...and it'll be fade city...

Big first inning in the TB/Balt game. That one looked fishy all day. Too bad I bet it last night :)
Ouch.

JDeuce- I'm definitely looking at that series with the Mets young stud Harvey going Thursday. Sometimes the phenoms are rushed and do worse than the older AAA guys that get called up but aren't great prospects. I wouldn't want his first game to be against a hot hitting team if I were the Mets.

As for the Tampa game, there is something fishy going on with totals and the Rays. I'm not the conspirator type, but jeez- how would anyone know that Gonzalez would blow up like that- he has pitched well and the Rays have been hitting terribly. That total looked good last night at 8, zoomed up to 9 overnight as if some big shark bet 100 grand on the over.

And now Price is getting hit by the slumping O's. ???????

Maybe this game gets stupider, and the pitching settles and no more runs the rest of the evening.

Maybe it's hitter friendly Camden Yard. But I'm going to be looking for any large overnight swings in Rays' totals this year.

Books are very reluctant to move a game from 8 to 9...it takes a lot of money because they could easily get sided with a 4-4 tie and a 5-4 final. 9 is the second most common total in baseball.

Great start tho...let's get em tonight.
