Struggling Red Sox Finish Series At Texas Rangers

The Boston Red Sox are making the wrong kind of history as they finish their 3-game series at the Texas Rangers on Wednesday night.

First pitch from the Lone Star State is 8:05 p.m. (ET). Josh Beckett will start for Boston and he’s one of the poster children for the team’s poor season. Texas will counter will lefty Derek Holland.

The Don Best odds screen is showing Texas -125 on the opener with a 10-run total.

The Red Sox (48-49) dropped the Monday series opener 9-1 despite having their 10-game winner Felix Doubront on the mound and facing a spot-starter in Scott Feldman. They’re now in a freefall with 4-straight losses and are below .500 at the latest point in a season since 2001.

Things won’t be getting any easier for Boston as slight ‘dogs on Tuesday night (result pending) before a weekend series at the rival New York Yankees. The Bronx Bombers just made a huge move by acquiring Seattle outfielder Ichiro Suzuki, while the Red Sox will be sellers at the July 31 trade deadline if they continue to descend.

The Rangers (57-38) have beaten the Red Sox in all three meetings this year and the last four overall. They now lead the Angels by five games in the AL West as they shoot for their third-straight World Series appearance.

Beckett (5-8, 4.53 ERA) is one of the targets of Boston fans’ ire, still blaming him for the September collapse last year when he was one of several starters drinking beer and eating fried chicken in the clubhouse during games.

The often ornery-Beckett never really accepted blame for that fiasco and hasn’t pitched well enough this year for fans to forget. The 32-year-old right-hander pitched pretty good through June (4.06 ERA), but has a 6.88 in three July starts.

Boston is just 1-6 in his last seven starts, scoring a total of eight runs in five of the losses. His ERA in the last six road starts is a solid 3.43, with the ‘under’ 4-1 in the last five of those.

Beckett is a native of Texas and is 3-1 with a 3.48 ERA in five lifetime starts at the Rangers. He did lose to them at home opposite Holland in April despite allowing just three earned runs over seven innings.

Holland (6-5, 4.84 ERA) is struggling to regain his 2011 form when he won 16 games with an ERA of 3.95.

The 25-year-old lefty looked good (1-0, 1.98 ERA) in his first two July starts after coming back from a DL stint with shoulder fatigue. However, he got lit up at the Angels last Friday in allowing two homers and six earned runs over 6 2/3 innings.

Holland needs to take care of business at home where he’s 2-3 with a 6.38 ERA compared to 4-2 with a 3.40 ERA away. He surrendered just two earned runs (four hits) over seven innings in that April win at Fenway.

Both teams are riding some ‘under’ streaks after the 10 combined runs on Monday dipped below the 10½-run total.

The ‘under’ is 7-0 in Texas’ last seven home games, 9-2 in Boston’s last 11 away and 12-0 in Boston’s last 12 against the AL West.

Look For Offense When Cardinals Host Dodgers

A key battle between National League playoff contenders gets ESPN's prime-time treatment on Wednesday when the Los Angeles Dodgers play the third of a 4-game set in St. Louis against the Cardinals.

The 8:15 p.m. (ET) start from Busch Stadium features a pair of right-handers who were Cincinnati teammates briefly in 2006-07. Aaron Harang goes for LA while Kyle Lohse is on tap for St. Louis. Don Best is sending the Cardinals and Lohse out as $1.45 favorites, with an 8-run total shaded to the 'under.'

Baseball analyst Kenny White really likes the St. Louis lineup that he believes is the best offensive group in the majors. The Cards are averaging an NL-best 4.9 runs per game, a figure that would rise to an MLB-leading 5.3 rpg when factoring a designated hitter into the mix.

Harang (7-5, 3.46) will try and keep Redbird hitters off the pay station while keeping his fine month of July going. He is coming off an impressive outing at the New York Mets last Friday in which he surrendered just one run and four hits over five innings. He has been about a run better at home than on the road, however, and White expects Harang to struggle at Busch Stadium against this potent lineup.

Career numbers for Harang against the Cardinals include a 7-13 record in 24 starts with a 4.47 ERA.

Lohse (10-2, 2.71) continues to fly under the radar when NL Cy Young candidates are discussed, but he has been solid all season. The right-hander leads the St. Louis staff with 15 quality starts among his 20 assignments, and Lohse ranks fifth among all NL hurlers in ERA.

White believes Lohse has been a bit fortunate, however, and predicts the Dodgers will put some runs on the board Wednesday. Los Angeles stroked 11 hits against him when the clubs met at Chavez Ravine in May, the most any team has tallied vs. Lohse this year.

Hot, humid weather in the St. Louis area, plus Harang pitching on the road has White thinking an 8-8½ run total is a "cheap number."

Los Angeles extended its streak over St. Louis to 8-straight wins with a 5-3 decision in Monday's opener. The Dodgers were +130 underdogs in that contest, and the Cardinals were once again favored in Tuesday's game (-120) that was still pending.

The clubs close the series out Thursday afternoon, and Don Best will provide a preview of that game. Keep in touch with Major League Baseball all season by following line movement, lineup changes and the latest injuries news with Don Best Pro Odds.

Wednesday's betting tips: The Astros can't buy a win

Weather to watch

Boston Red Sox at Texas Rangers: Wind expected to be blowing in from right field. Temperatures could exceed 100 F.

Minnesota Twins at Chicago White Sox: A 30 percent chance of thunderstorms prior to the game scheduled to begin at 2:10 ET. Strong 20+ mph winds expected to be blowing from right to left.

Los Angeles Dodgers at St. Louis Cardinals: Temperatures expected to be over 100 F for first pitch with 14 mph winds blowing out to left field.

Who’s hot?

The Detroit Tigers, Oakland Athletics, Cincinnati Reds and Los Angeles Dodgers are all riding five-game winning streaks heading into Tuesday night’s action.

Who’s not?

The New York Mets have dropped 10 of their last 11 games prior to Tuesday’s tilt with the Nationals.

Key stat

The Houston Astros have dropped 19 of their last 21 games heading into play Tuesday and are 0-11 since May 10 at home after a 5-plus run loss in a night game.

Game of the day

Los Angeles Dodgers at St. Louis Cardinals (-150)

Injury not to be overlooked

Nationals’ right fielder Jayson Werth is nearing a return from the 60-day DL and is set to return in early August. The slugger went 0-for-3 in a Triple-A rehab game Monday.

Notable quotable

"I don't know how many teams are interested in a 5-plus ERA guy."- Brewers starting pitcher Randy Wolf on his own trade value.

Notes and tips

The Nashville Predators retained the services of franchise defenseman Shea Weber Tuesday by matching the offer sheet submitted by the Philadelphia Flyers on June 18. Weber, who was a restricted free agent, agreed to a 14-year, $110 million contract with the Flyers.

Bettors who have picked the under are 6-0-0 in the Dodgers’ last six contests.

Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

-- I wrote earlier tonight that Carl Crawford is hurt again; apparently not, they are just taking him out of close games in late innings because they do not want him hurting his bad elbow making throws from the outfield. Did I mention he's also 0 for his last 15, and I am an idiot for playing him?

-- Dodgers liberated Hanley Ramirez from Florida, for Nathan Eovaldi-- there were other smaller pieces involved.

-- Top basketball recruit Andrew Wiggins was 36-41 from the foul line at the Peach Jam tournament. Someone who actually practices FTs!!!!

-- Alex Rodriguez got drillled by Felix Hernandez last night and broke his left hand. He makes $185,185.19 per game, so if he missed 15 games, he is making $2,777,777.78 for sitting there, doing nothing.

-- Pirates traded for Wandy Rodriguez; yes, the Pirates are adding pieces at the trading deadline. Must be an exciting time for Buc fans......

-- That said, Pittsburgh scored one run the last two nights, against a bad Cub team. Might want to add a bat (Victorino???) too.

*********

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Random mid-week thoughts.........

13) I think mainstream media underreports how important it is for small market baseball teams to stay in contention thru July, so that the owners don’t give up and sell their more marketable older players elsewhere for prospects before the July 31 trade deadline.

Tears the heart out of the fans to give up like that, with the Ichiro Suzuki trade a notable exception. Ichiro was an expensive, fading superstar in decline on a bad team; to get his salary off the books allows them to move and prepare for the future. Ichiro makes $17M a year.

12) Pro golfers are allowed to carry 14 clubs in their bag during a round; I’m wondering in what percentage of rounds do they use all 14 clubs?

11) Penn State has 39 freshman/redshirt freshman football players, all of whom are free to leave and play somewhere else, without sitting out a year. If they stay, they’ll never play in a bowl game or the Big Dozen conference championship games. It a lot of them leave, the program will be decimated after this season. Unfortunate yet interesting situation.

10) Wall Street Journal reports that of the 204 countries sending teams to the Olympics in London later this week, 80 have never won a medal.

9) Major League Baseball attendance is up 5.5% from this time LY.

8) Umpire Paul Emmel has worked the plate 20 times this season; 19 of those 20 games went over the total. Beckett-Cliff Lee was the matchup in that 20th game.

7) If you care about such things, the US Olympic basketball team was a 10.5-point favorite over Spain Tuesday. Wonder what the spread is going to be for that Tunisia game. Thank God we have Boeheim on the bench for all that tactical advice that'll be needed to fend off Nigeria.

6) Giants are having what they’re calling training camp here in Albany starting later this week, but its really just 14 practices, since 2-a-days are a thing of the past. What used to be called training camp, grueling practices in the summer heat, is now largely obsolete/against the rules.

5) Not even sure what the point is of the Giants packing everything up and moving it three hours north, just for 14 practices.

4) Happy birthday to former Braves catcher (and 1978 NL All-Star) Biff Pocoroba, who turns 59 Wednesday. One of my boyhood heroes.

3) UNLV is recruiting Reggie Theus Jr,, a hooper from Fairfax High in LA and son of the former UNLV/NBA star; what might make it awkward is that Rebel coach Dave Rice beat out the elder Theus for the UNLV head coaching job in spring of ’11.

2) If you take CC Sabathia's salary and add it to Alex Rodriguez' salary, it is more than the entire Oakland A's payroll for this year. Moneyball!!!!!

1) Officially started my NFL research tonight, getting the NFL Record and Fact Book at Barnes and Noble after work. Only seven weeks until Dallas plays the Giants in the regular season opener.

Wednesday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

STREAKING

Tim Lincecum, San Francisco Giants (4-10, 5.72 ERA)

The two-time Cy Young Award winner is finally showing signs of snapping out of his season-long slump. Lincecum allowed two earned runs on five hits, while striking out six over seven innings as the Giants defeated the Phillies 7-2 Friday night.

In his previous start against the Astros, “The Freak” struck out a season-high 11 batters en route to tossing eight innings of shutout ball. He should be able to build on that momentum against the lowly Padres Wednesday night.

David Price, Tampa Bay Rays (13-4, 2.64 ERA)

Not many pitchers have been more consistent than David Price this season. Price has pitched more than seven innings in each of his last six starts and has a sparkling 1.27 ERA in three July starts. Even more impressive, is the fact that his last four starts have been against legit playoff contenders (Indians, Red Sox, Yankees, and Tigers).

The lefty last dropped a decision on June 13 and has picked up the win in five of his last six starts. Bettors may find value with the Rays on the road in Baltimore.

SLUMPING

Tommy Hanson, Atlanta Braves (10-5, 4.50 ERA)

“Big Red” has been torched in his last two starts. The Nationals lit him up for eight earned runs in four innings Friday night, but the Braves rallied late to pull out an 11-10 victory. Hanson also struggled in his previous start on July 14 against the Mets, allowing six earned runs over 5 1-3 innings.

Hanson was solid earlier this year, but his ERA has skyrocketed from 3.54 in mid-June to 4.50 heading into Wednesday.

Wednesday will mark his first start against division-rival Miami this season.

Josh Beckett, Boston Red Sox (5-8, 4.83 ERA)

Is it time to push the panic button in Boston yet? The Red Sox have lost four in a row heading into action in the Lone Star State Tuesday, mostly because of horrendous starting pitching. Beckett’s first-inning ERA now stands at 10.69, with 19 earned runs allowed in 16 innings. His ERA over the other innings is 3.38.

The Texas native has also allowed 13 earned runs in his last 17 innings pitched. It gets worse: His next start is against the high-powered Rangers.

Buy low: Four struggling MLB starters on the rise
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mark Buehrle struggled to find his form in his first few months in Miami, after pitching 12 seasons for the Chicago White Sox.

But after starting the year with a disappointing 5-8 record, the Marlins’ big offseason acquisition won four straight starts and now sits with a respectable 9-9 mark heading into Tuesday’s action.

Buehrle’s struggles allowed MLB bettors to grab the ace at discount prices during that four-game winning run, bringing in +3.92 units to those who kept their faith the left-hander. And even a loss in his most recent outing, as -119 favorites against the Chicago Cubs, stung less than compared to the hefty price tag Buehrle commanded earlier in the year.

There are more than a few stud hurlers who have stumbled during the 2012 season, forcing oddsmakers to trim their teams’ moneyline odds whenever they take the bump. These aces won’t stay down for long, making now the best time to buy.

Here’s a look at four pitchers to purchase while the price is right:

Tim Lincecum, San Francisco Giants (4-10, 5.72 ERA, -9.21 units)

The two-time Cy Young winner was way off the mark through the first four months of the schedule, posting a 3-10 record and 6.42 ERA before the All-Star break. Since the hiatus, the Giants ace seems like his old self again. He’s allowed just two earned runs on 10 hits in his last 15 innings, posting back-to-back quality starts for just the second time this season. The price has come way down on the right-hander, with San Francisco marked as underdogs in four of his last six starts.

Cliff Lee, Philadelphia Phillies (1-6, 3.72 ERA, -13.41 units)

Betting on the worst money pitcher in baseball might seem like flushing hard-earned coin down the crapper, but Lee isn’t your ordinary arm. He picked up his first win of the season on July 4 and has been solid ever since, owning a 1-1 record and 2.05 ERA in July. Lee’s poor record has started the rumor mill, with Texas as a possible destination. But it might be wise for Philadelphia to hang on to the veteran southpaw. Lee was dynamite in the second half of the season last year, going 8-2 with a 1.79 ERA after the break.

Chad Billingsley, Los Angeles Dodgers (5-9, 4.15 ERA, -0.79 units)

Billingsley was strong in his first start off the disabled list, giving up one run on seven hits over six innings for a 5-3 win over the St. Louis Cardinals Monday. The Dodgers righty missed the past two weeks due to elbow inflammation, a big reason why he lost in the five previous starts. He told reporters he had no discomfort during Monday's start and his change-up and curveball were sharper than ever. Los Angeles has been an underdog in 10 of Billingsley’s 19 starts this season. Bettors should continue to get favorable odds as the righty plays a big part in the Dodgers’ postseason push.

Adam Wainwright, St. Louis Cardinals (7-10, 4.42 ERA, -9.79 units)

Wainwright’s elbow surgery and long recovery has led to troubles with consistency, book-ending horrific outings with stellar performances. And not all of those solid showings have translated into wins. He allowed only one earned run and struck out a season-high nine batters in a 4-3 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers Wednesday, with the defense spoiling his efforts in the first inning. Wainwright told the media that St. Louis is still a championship-caliber team and he’s done his best to prove that this month, boasting a 2.79 ERA and 1.03 WHIP in July. He got the call against the Dodgers Tuesday, with the Cardinals listed as -122 home favorites.
