Neil Reed
, the former Indiana University basketball player who went public with a claim that Bob Knight choked him in practice, died Thursday of cardiac arrest at age 36.
His death was confirmed by the sports editor of the Santa Maria (Calif.) Times. Reed spent the last three seasons as the freshman basketball coach at Pioneer Valley High School in Santa Maria.

Late Thursday afternoon a vigil was being held at the school for Reed.
Reed played high school basketball at East Jefferson High School in Metairie, La. According to the New Orleans Times-Picayune, Reed died Thursday in Nipomo, Calif., after suffering a massive heart attack on Wednesday. That information was confirmed by former East Jefferson Coach Jim Robarts. Nipomo is located about 150 miles northwest of Los Angeles in San Luis Obispo County.

Reed most recently had served as a teacher and coach at Pioneer Valley High School in Santa Maria, Calif. He served as head boys basketball coach at the Santa Maria school for one season during the 2009-10 school year.
Reed is survived by his wife Kelly and two daughters, Marley and Pressley, ages 6 and 4, a sister Michelle Williams and his father and mother Terry and Pat Reed.
Reed played three seasons at Indiana. He averaged 9.8 points in 94 games. He made 72 starts.

Following his junior season, his teammates voted him off the team and Knight agreed. Reed later transferred to the University of Southern Mississippi.

36 year old cardiac arrest is terrible! I've responded to a lot of cardiac red's (heart attacks) in my FD/paramedic career...and only a handful were under the age of 50.

I think it's very unfair to call that a choke.

When i think of choke , i think of 2 hands around the throat and squeezing.

That was an intemidating throat grab but not a choke.

Nipomo, CA has one of the best steakhouses in the world. It's one of the best kept secrets around. Their steak is so tender, they they used to not even give out knives when they served the steak. Jocko's Steakhouse.
