absolutely not.

All you are doing is increasing the bits which make's it take up more space on your drive.

If you are an audiofile, you are going to want at least 320kbs if you have any kind of decent equipment.
If you are using IPOD ear buds 128 will do.

I use Apple lossless which make's a near replica of an original CD. Its the highest quality digital track you can have.
It takes up much more hard drive space but the sound quality difference is enormous.

You can only put about 550 songs on a 20gig IPOD using lossless.
If you use 128kbs you can hold almost 5000 songs.

But dont waste your time upconverting

Its impossible to take an inferior source and somehow magically make it sound better.

All you will be doing in that case is duplicating bits that is already in your recording and taking up harddrive space.

Ok, that's pretty much what I thought. Thanks for the detailed answer.

What about if I have a 192 mp3 and convert it down to 128? I would have to have some pretty high end equipment to even tell the difference, right?

It depends on how sensitive you are to sound.
Some people are so tone deaf they cant tell the difference in stereo and mono.

I see no reason to convert down to 128 unless you are having storage issues.

My GF cant tell the difference in the sound coming out of my $50 headphones vs my $1500 headphones.
It blows my mind.

So to answer your question I have no idea if you will be able to tell the difference.

But I would be able to tell.

It would go from bad to worse.
