Do you believe its in the Nationals and Stephen Strasburg's best interest to shut him down after 180 innings pitched?

Key points: Strasburg coming off tommy john surgery, Nats held P Jordan Zimmermann to 160 IP Limit when he came off the same surgery..... Maybe not a 1 shot chance, Nats have a strong young nucleus to this team.

Nats a historically struggling franchise trying to win over a new fan base, currently the best team in Baseball. City could really get behind a Champion.

Currently at 118 IP
20 Starts, 11-4 W/L team is 14-6 in his Starts

2.76 ERA 132K-32BB

So you're entering the Playoffs as a Number 1 seed in the NL: If youre Rizzo the GM, do you start Strasburg

IDK, Strasburg cannot say he wants to shut it down. He's a quiet guy anyway, think he would lose some clubhouse respect...

Only a doctor should say it, even the GM will catch a ton of heat if it's fully his decision. I just don't know how I feel about it.... well I do, I want him to pitch but I would hate if it ruined his career

He should.

Possibly sacrificing at least 3 seasons or more for one does not make sense.

They will be in better position to contend next season.

IMO, he should keep playing. They first said somewhere around 160 innings...now its' 180? They should limit his outings to no more than 5 innings (until the playoffs). How many shots will they get at the post-season? They probably have several playoffs ahead of them, but if they win the NL East they shouldn't shut him down.

It's a daily topic on sports radio around here.....lots of differing opinions.

Seems taxing on the BP to only let him go 5.

As long as they are assured a playoff spot i would shut it down until then.

Do you remember Storm Davis? He was a 19 game winner for the Oakland A's 1989 World Series team. He averaged around 5.1 innings per start (31 starts, 169 innings). When he took the mound they knew he was likely only going 5 innings, no more than 6.:

The starting rotation that Washington has goes well into the 6th/7th inning, often resting their bullpen. They have a top-5 bullpen and would not hurt to let them go. They also have solid middle relief who could easily be prepared to pitch when Stasburg goes.

He only lasted 4.1 tonight as Philly shelled him...

i would have shut him down a few starts ago, let him do his typical side throwing/tossing to keep his arm fresh and come playoffs, i would use him but not abuse him...throw him in game1 and give him 6 days of rest (when typical teams are leaning on their ace on 3 days rest) and try to make a run like that. if it doesnt pan out then so be it, but you cant risk ruining this guy. throw him in game1 and come back with him in a game 6 or 7 if needed.

they are in a weird spot b/c many knew this team was an up and coming team but not many expected them to be this good so soon.....of course it made sense for them to say we are going to limit him to 180 innings at the beginning of the season but no one expected them to have the best record in mlb...bottom like is YOU HAVE TO TRY TO WIN THE WORLD SERIES THIS YEAR! you have one of the best pitchers in mlb, i would have put him down weeks ago and got him ready to go for the playoffs, their spot is assured in the playoffs

Husker, very good analysis. No one expected them to be this good THIS year. It was supposed to be Philly's division for one more year...w/ the Braves giving them a push. I agree that they have to try to win the World Series this year. Look at the Braves & Phillies. One World Series title each w/ those great teams and great pitching staffs.

What exactly does the team ( ownership) get for winning the WS, besides perhaps future fan support ? Do they score tons of cash ?
