Nationals Open Homestand Against Philadelphia Phillies

Their roles were supposed to be reversed this season in the National League East Division race. Instead, it's the last-place Philadelphia Phillies who have been relegated to playing potential spoilers as they open a series on Tuesday at the first-place Washington Nationals.

Scheduled to be broadcast by the MLB Network with a 7:05 p.m. (ET) first pitch, Game 1 of the set has a dandy pitching matchup with Cliff Lee on the mound for the Phils opposite Washington's Stephen Strasburg. Washington went out as $1.40+ chalk with a 6½-run total, right in line with the 6-6½ totals the previous time the two clubs met in the nation's capital.

A 16.5-game chasm divides the teams to begin the series, with the Nats owning a 4-game advantage over 2nd-place Atlanta in the division when play opened Monday. Philadelphia is coming off a sweep at the hands of those Braves this past weekend at Turner Field, and the best thing that can be said about this underachieving bunch is at least the Phillies have summoned up the strength for a winning 8-7 record since the all-star break.

Monday's off day was Washington's first following the Midsummer Classic, a stretch that included 18 games over a 17-day stretch with the Nats winning 12 times. They are coming off a 6-1 road trip through New York and Milwaukee, culminating the journey with an uplifting effort vs. the Brewers on Sunday that saw the Nationals tie the game in the ninth before taking an 11-10 victory in the 11th.

Six games between the Phils and Nats this season, three in each park, have resulted in a 4-2 advantage for Washington, the 'over' also cashing in four of the six clashes. Cole Hamels picked up wins in the finale of both sets to help the Phillies avoid being swept in each series.

Strasburg didn't decision in his only 2012 assignment against Philly, an eventual 4-3 Washington victory on May 4 when the right-hander worked six innings and allowed three runs. The Nationals have struggled in his last six starts dating back into late-June, winning just two of the games while Strasburg's ERA is 3.51 during the span.

There continues to be talk regarding just when the Nationals will shut Strasburg down this year as they hope to keep from overworking the young phenom who had Tommy John surgery in the summer of his rookie 2010 campaign. He threw just over 123 innings that season, including his 11 minor league starts, and currently sits on 117-1/3 IP in 2012.

That Cliff Lee has just one dubya on his ledger, and the Phillies are a woeful 5-12 in his 17 starts, might be the most jaw-dropping stat yet produced through nearly four months of the MLB schedule. Philadelphia did win his last outing, but the victory had nothing to do with the southpaw's performance. Lee surrendered four homers and six runs at home to the Brewers, but the Phils overcame a 6-1 hole with a 6-run eighth to rally for the win.

Lee hasn't faced the Nats this season, and dropped two of his three assignments vs. Washington a year ago. He is also the current subject of trade rumors, with the Texas Rangers reportedly in the mix.

Philadelphia isn't listing new injuries since placing 3B Placido Polanco on the disabled list last week. Washington is playing without all-star SS Ian Desmond (oblique), with Danny Espinosa sliding from second to short in his absence. First baseman Adam LaRoche is also questionable for Tuesday's game with back spasms that flared up in Sunday's contest at Milwaukee. With a southpaw like Lee on the hill, LaRoche might have been given the day off even if he was 100 percent. Chad Tracy and Tyler Moore are candidates to replace him in the starting lineup.

There is a chance for some scattered storms in the DC area on Tuesday, increasing to 40 percent by nightfall. Temps in the low-80s with heavy humidity is the forecast for game time.

Red-Hot Reds Entertain San Diego Padres

Hot information for a hot team as the Cincinnati Reds host the San Diego Padres in the continuation of their series at Great American Ball Park on Tuesday night.

Jason Marquis will get the start for the visiting Padres with Homer Bailey pitching for the Reds. Don Best is sending Bailey and the Reds out as big $1.90 favorites with the run total at nine, shaded to the 'over.'

We start with Marquis (6-9, 5.25) in the matchup, whose numbers don't show how well he's been pitching in his current form. The veteran retired the last 16 batters he faced at San Francisco in his last outing, and has reeled off three consecutive wins for the Padres while lowering his National League ERA a third of a run since joining San Diego in late May after being released by the Minnesota Twins.

"Also, he beat the Giants and the Dodgers, a couple of good-hitting teams," Don Best sports analyst Pat Williams said, also noting Marquis' roundabout venture to the Padres where he has suddenly reinvented himself as a strikeout pitcher.

Current form is also a relevant topic for Bailey (9-6, 3.53) who is 4-0 in five July outings while Cincinnati also get the win in his one no-decision. One of those wins was in San Diego just before the All-Star Game, and Bailey pitched around some shoddy Reds defense to earn the 6-5 win.

This series opened Monday with Cincinnati priced at -145. Mike Leake was on the hill and former Red right-hander Edinson Volquez was slated for the Pads. The game carried an 8½-run total and was still pending.

Cincinnati started the series with 10-straight wins, its longest streak since equaling that number during the 1998 season. The Reds are 14-2 since the all-star break and held a 3-game lead Monday over the Pittsburgh Pirates who come to Cincinnati this weekend.

The Reds were also tied with the Washington Nationals for the top record in all of baseball at 61-40. Cincinnati backers are up more than 15½ units on the year, with the Reds also sporting a profitable 57-38-6 'under' mark.

San Diego was 13-games back in the NL West in fourth place, and had dropped two straight. Betting the Padres would have cost you $8.60 so far.

Verlander, Beckett Tangle As Red Sox Host Tigers

A crucial series in the American League playoff race continues Tuesday in Boston where the Red Sox entertain the Detroit Tigers.

Game 2 of the series from Fenway Park is set for a 7:10 p.m. (ET) first pitch from Boston's Josh Beckett. The right-hander has struggled much of the campaign, and it won't be easy to start turning things around against Detroit ace Justin Verlander. The Tigers opened in the -130 to -140 range on the MLB odds behind the reigning AL MVP and Cy Young winner.

Tuesday's total is eight and priced a little heavier to the 'over.'

Beckett's name has recently come up among a horde of rumors as Major League Baseball heads towards Tuesday's 3:00 p.m. (ET) non-waiver trade deadline. Beckett (5-9, 4.57) is set to make $17 million this year and another $32 million through the end of his current contract which runs through 2014, and that will be a huge stumbling block to any potential deal, not to mention his 10/5 service rights to veto any trade.

If the Red Sox were going to ship him out, they should have done so before he pitched the club to seven losses in his last eight starts. A lack of run support can be blamed on some of those defeats, but Beckett's 5.01 ERA in that span is primarily culpable. His 2012 season started with a rough outing against the Tigers in Detroit, Beckett failing to make it through the fifth inning while serving up five long balls. The good news is he has allowed just four home runs in the subsequent 16 assignments, including a second loss to the Tigers when they came to Boston in May, the only game Detroit won in that series.

Verlander (11-6, 2.60) appeared to be on his way to a fourth consecutive win his last time out before a couple of 7th-inning homers started to unravel his fine effort. Cleveland eventually plated all of their runs against Verlander in a 5-3 win for the Indians who were getting +150 at the baseball betting window.

This will be the third go-around this season for Sox hitters to face Verlander. He tossed eight shutout frames in Detroit on Opening Day, but closer Jose Valverde coughed up a 2-0 lead in the ninth before the Tigers posted a 3-2 victory as $1.40 favorites. Detroit was priced at -155 behind Verlander at Fenway on May 29 when Boston hung a 6-3 loss on the big right-hander.

The Tigers swept the season-opening series in Motown before the Red Sox won three of four in the May series played in Beantown. Boston saw a 7-game home winning streak against Detroit end in the finale of the May set.

This series opened Monday with the outcome still pending. Boston was a slight 115 favorite with Clay Buchholz on the hill. Detroit was countering with Max Scherzer and oddsmakers leaned 'under' on a 9½-run total.

Boston started the series level at 51-51 and in the AL East cellar, 9.5-games behind the front-running New York Yankees. Detroit (54-48) was second in the AL Central and trailed the Chicago White Sox by 1.5-games.

Strasburg tries to shut down Phillies on Tuesday

PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES (45-57)

at WASHINGTON NATIONALS (61-40)

First pitch: Tuesday, 7:05 p.m. EDT
Line: Washington -140, Philadelphia +130, Total: 6½

With the trade deadline looming, the last-place Phillies will face the division-leading Nationals on Tuesday to begin a three-game set for these NL East foes.

With his name blowing in the rumor mill, Cliff Lee takes the mound for Philadelphia, amid a season in which he is pitching reasonably well (3.95 ERA, 1.20 WHIP) but has a measly 1-6 record. Despite his 112 strikeouts in 118.1 innings and just 23 walks, the Phillies are just 5-12 in his starts in 2012. On Tuesday, he faces Stephen Strasburg, who has a 2.76 ERA and 1.12 WHIP this season, sporting a dominant 11-4 record, with the team winning 14 of his 20 starts. Strasburg takes the hill for a rolling Nationals squad that is 8-1 in its past nine games and has won 13 of its past 17 meetings with the Phillies, with that streak starting against none other than Cliff Lee. Furthermore, while Strasburg is coming off a seven-inning, four-hit and 11-strikeout performance, Lee was battered for six earned runs on 12 hits in seven innings, serving up four home runs. All trends point towards WASHINGTON winning this one.

This four-star FoxSheets trend also favors the Nationals:

PHILADELPHIA is 10-26 (27.8%, -21.3 Units) against the money line vs. a starting pitcher whose strikes out 5 or more batters per start this season. The average score was PHILADELPHIA 4.1, OPPONENT 5.4 - (Rating = 4*).

The Phillies have been nothing, if not streaky lately. This month they’ve already had two four-game winning streaks since the All-Star break, but also have had losing streaks of 6, 5, 3 and 3 games since June 27. Philly was most recently swept by the Braves, scoring just four runs in the entire series, and dropping its record to 11-25 (.306) versus NL East foes. Lee is 3-2 with a 2.89 ERA and 1.18 WHIP in his career against Washington, but his two most recent starts—both in 2011—were the two losses on his record, with a 5.84 ERA and 1.70 WHIP in those two outings.

Strasburg has no decisions against the Phils in his career but the Nats are 2-0 in his two career starts against them, in which he has a 3.48 ERA and impressive 0.58 WHIP, allowing just six base-runners in 10.1 innings. His lone start in 2012 versus Philadelphia yielded a six-inning, three-run performance in which Strasburg allowed just three hits, but two of them were home runs. Although Strasburg has averaged fewer than six innings per start this year, he still leads the National League with 151 strikeouts. The Nats bullpen has also been strong in support of Strasburg, posting a 3.52 ERA and 1.25 WHIP this season. And whereas the Phillies struggle against divisional opponents, Washington has dominated them with a 25-14 (.641) record against NL East competitors.

Tuesday's betting tips: Reds scorching hot without Votto

Weather to watch

Philadelphia Phillies at Washington Nationals: A 40 percent chance of thunderstorms could spoil a fantastic pitching matchup between Cliff Lee and Stephen Strasburg.

Who’s hot?

The Atlanta Braves have won five straight heading into Monday’s contest with the Marlins. Atlanta pitchers have held opponents to three runs or fewer in each of the club’s last five victories.

Who’s not?

The Kansas City Royals have lost five straight games and are 2-8 in their last 10 contests. The Royals begin a six-game home stand Tuesday when they host the Indians.

Key stat

.141 – Josh Hamilton’s batting average in July. The Rangers slugger entered the month at a .319 clip with 25 home runs. His four straight games played without a hit matches the second-longest such streak of his career.

Game of the day

Los Angeles Angels at Texas Rangers

Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Carl Crawford – The Red Sox outfielder said he’ll decide in the next 7-10 days whether or not to undergo season-ending Tommy John surgery on his ailing left elbow.

Betting notes

- Pirates right-hander pitcher Kevin Correia asked the team for a trade Sunday. Correia was bumped from the starting rotation last week when the Bucs acquired lefty Wandy Rodriguez from the Astros.

- Yankees general manager Brian Cashman expects left-hander Andy Pettitte (ankle) to return sometime in September and be available for the playoffs. Pettitte was initially projected to miss six weeks when he suffered the fracture on June 27.

-The Reds are 11-2 without star 1B Joey Votto, who is eligible to come off the disabled list Tuesday but has not yet resumed baseball activities.

- Third baseman Chris Johnson was the latest to escape Houston as he was dealt to Arizona for two minor leaguers Sunday. He became the sixth player traded by the Astros this month.

Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

-- Kendry Morales is the 3rd player in MLB history to homer from both sides of the plate IN THE SAME INNING. Wow.

-- Paul Maholm's reward for pitching well in Chicago? They traded him to the Braves in a 4-player deal. Now he's in a pennant race.

-- Astros called Brett Wallace up from AAA and he batted cleanup in his first game. Not often you go from the minors to hitting cleanup.

-- Pirates traded for Travis Snider late Monday, trying for more offense.

-- If you're a curious human, Carlos Baerga/Mark Bellhorn are the other two guys to homer from both sides of plate in the same inning.

-- Trade deadline is 4:00 this afternoon; look for some fireworks, as teams try and position themselves for the stretch drive.

**********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Our major league rankings.........

The bottom five
30) Astros—Lost 27 of last 30 games; in complete rebuild mode, but Rome wasn’t built in a day. Or a year. This will take a while.

29) Rockies—Clint Hurdle had them in the World Series four years ago; why did they fire him? Pitching staff is a complete mess.

28) Brewers—In his last three appearances, Francisco Rodriguez got five outs, allowed nine earned runs. Milwaukee fired its bullpen coach Stan Kyles, who obviously was at fault for all the Brewers' problems (not).

27) Royals— 4-13 since All-Star break. Another bleak season.

26) Twins—Have 44-58 record despite a payroll of $100,435,000. Not sure how trading Liriano helps them; he had been pitching well.

The Top Eight
8) Pirates— Gave up 23 runs in last two games; Monday was first time in last 20 road games they didn't homer. Added Travis Snider after the game.

7) Braves-- Bolstered rotation by adding Maholm Monday nite. Looking to send Chipper into retirement with a playoff appearance.

6) Dodgers—Shut Giants out in back-to-back games in San Francisco for first time ever. Addition of Hanley Ramirez helps.

5) Angels— How would you like to face them in a short series? Trying all out to win division to avoid one-game Wild Card game.

4) Rangers—Two-time AL champs got hammered by the Halos Monday, then traded for a new catcher (Soto).

3) Nationals—Strasburg situation (innings limit) will be worth monitoring. Won eight of last nine games, steamrolling towards October.

2) Bronx— Teixeira hurt his left wrist Monday, will have an MRI. Look for them to try and trade for a stopgap first baseman at the deadline.

1) Reds— On a roll with Votto hurt, but playing mostly lousy teams, too. Had 10-game winning streak snapped by San Diego Monday.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tuesday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

STREAKING

Homer Bailey, Cincinnati Reds (9-6, 3.53 ERA)

Bailey is a major reason why the Reds are 17-2 since the All-Star break and riding a 10-game winning streak into Monday. The righty hasn’t taken a loss since June 27 and is 4-0 in his last five starts. The right-hander has a 1.43 ERA over five July starts and should continue to dominate in his next start against the lowly Padres.

Kyle Lohse, St. Louis Cardinals (10-2, 2.71 ERA)

Lohse has emerged as the staff ace in the absence of Chris Carpenter. The 33-year-old hasn’t given up more than two runs in any of his last seven starts and owns a 2.36 ERA in July. The right-hander hasn’t taken a loss since June 15, and the Cardinals are 5-1 in his last six starts. His next outing is on the road in Colorado.

SLUMPING

James Shields, Tampa Bay Rays (8-7, 4.52 ERA)

Shields continues to be the subject of trade rumors with the Tuesday deadline approaching. The Rays reportedly declined a trade offer for the big righty from the Angels on Thursday that would have sent speedy outfielder Peter Bourjos to Tampa Bay. Shields hasn’t responded well to the rumors, allowing 22 earned runs in 32 July innings. If Shields is still in a Rays’ uniform Tuesday, he’ll take the mound against the red-hot A’s.

Derek Lowe, Cleveland Indians (8-9, 5.09 ERA)

Since starting the season 6-1, Lowe is 2-8 with a 7.59 ERA over his last 12 starts. The sinker-baller has taken the loss in his last three outings, surrendering 16 earned runs in 15 innings pitched. With the Indians losing ground in the Wild Card race, manager Manny Acta is considering skipping Lowe’s next turn in the rotation if he doesn’t put together a strong performance against the Royals on Tuesday.

Rounding the bases: The best bets in the big leagues
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Every week we take a look at the hottest and coldest teams as well as the best over and under bets in Major League Baseball.

Hot team: Cincinnati Reds

Last week: 6-0
Season record: 61-40
Upcoming schedule: vs. Padres, vs. Pirates

Skinny: The Reds enter action Monday on a 10-game win streak and are 17-2 since the All-Star break. Cincinnati is two wins away from tying the franchise mark for consecutive wins that has been done twice – most recently in 1957.

Cold team: Houston Astros

Last week: 1-6
Season record: 35-68
Upcoming schedule: at Milwaukee, at Atlanta

Skinny: The Astros avoided a 13-game losing streak with a 9-5 victory over the Pirates. Third baseman Chris Johnson was the latest to escape Houston as he was dealt Sunday to Arizona for two minor leaguers . He became the sixth player traded by the Astros this month.

Over team: Minnesota Twins

Last week: 5-1-0
Season O/U record: 50-46-5
Upcoming schedule: vs. White Sox, at Red Sox

Skinny: The Twins offense came alive over the weekend against the Indians. Minnesota pounded 28 runs in the three-game series much to the delight of bettors who took the over. Twins pitchers were equally as bad against the White Sox earlier in the week, allowing 26 runs in the three-game set.

Under team: Tampa Bay Rays

Last week: 5-1-0
Season O/U record: 39-58-5
Upcoming schedule: at Oakland, vs. Baltimore

Skinny: The Rays pitching staff stayed true to form last week, surrendering only five runs in six contests. Tampa pitchers posted back-to-back shutouts against the high-powered Angels over the weekend, solidifying under bets. David Price takes the hill opposite rookie A.J Griffin Monday in another game destined for the under.
