White Sox Open Series With Los Angeles Angels

We really need to see a Zack Greinke vs. Ryan Dempster confrontation at some point to decide the American League West Division. Until then, we'll make do when each takes the mound for their new clubs against whoever, and that whoever for Greinke on Friday ain't chopped liver themselves.

The newest acquisition by the Los Angeles Angels continues his re-education in the American League when he opens the series at the Chicago White Sox. His opponent for the 8:10 p.m. (ET) start at US Cellular Field is none other than perfect game artist Philip Humber. The Angels were installed as $1.35 favorites with an 8½-run total.

This has AL playoff matchup written all over it. The Angels were completing a series Thursday at the Texas Rangers, the outcome still in question as we went to press, while Chicago took the day off. The ChiSox and Halos were just percentage points apart in the American League standings, Chicago owning a 2.5-game lead over Detroit in the AL Central while LA was hoping to cut into Texas' 4-game lead in the AL West.

If the Angels can't catch the Rangers, and the Detroit Tigers do catch the White Sox as many expect, this weekend could very well be a preview of the new 1-game, wild card playoff format which goes into effect this year.

Greinke was acquired from the Milwaukee Brewers with designs on the Angels catching the Rangers and reclaiming their prominence atop the division. The right-hander showed that he could help with those designs in his first assignment this past Sunday when he limited the Tampa Bay Rays to two runs over seven innings. However, Rays hurler Jeremy Hellickson was more than equal to the task with six shutout innings in Tampa Bay's 2-0 victory.

Greinke has plenty of experience against the White Sox from his days toiling for the Kansas City Royals. Twenty-two previous starts vs. Chicago have yielded a 7-10 record and 3.98 ERA.

That effort by Hellickson and his bullpen deserves a gold star given how potent this Angels lineup has been. The offense was a big part of the blame for the club's slow start to the campaign, averaging just over 3.5 runs per game through May 21 when the team was 18-25 and dead last in the AL West. In the 62 subsequent games before Thursday's clash at Texas, the sticks have come alive and put up 5.3 rpg.

Humber struggled after throwing his el perfecto in Seattle on April 21, and was even shut down for about a month with a strained elbow. Friday will mark his first start at home since a poor showing vs. the Houston Astros in an interleague battle on June 10.

Among the three starts he has made since returning from the disabled list, one was really ugly in Detroit (3 IP, 6 ER, 4 HR), and two were solid efforts against powerful lineups in Boston and Texas. He faced the Angels one time in 2011, lasting five innings and allowing four runs (2 earned) in a 4-3 home loss.

The Angels and White Sox met in Anaheim for a quickie 2-game set in mid-May, and appropriately split those contests. The clubs are 55-55 against one another dating back to the start of the 2000 season. The Pale Hose won three of the five games played in the Windy City a year ago, and the teams will meet one more time on the 2012 schedule when Chicago travels to Anaheim in September.

Pirates And Reds Collide In Cincinnati

Wandy Rodriguez earned his only experience in a playoff race as a rookie in 2005 when he went 10-10 for the Houston Astros in their only NL Championship season.

Friday night, Wandy gets his first taste of what it's like to pitch in a pennant race since then as he gets the nod for his new club the Pittsburgh Pirates when they open a critical series in Cincinnati against the Reds. Mat Latos will oppose Rodriguez in the 7:10 p.m. (ET) start, and the Reds were sent out on a -150 price with an 8-run total.

The Pirates enjoyed a day off Thursday while the Reds were finishing up their home series with a matinee affair against the Padres. Cincinnati opened play with a 3-game lead over Pittsburgh in the NL Central, a cushion that could increase or decrease by half a game depending on Thursday's outcome which found the Reds $2.00 favorites behind ace Johnny Cueto.

This weekend will mark the fourth series meeting of 2012 between the clubs, with the Pirates winning two of the previous three sets to stake themselves to a 5-4 advantage on the year. The most recent clash was in Cincinnati where the Bucs won twice and the 'over' cashed all three games.

Nearly 20 years of losing baseball appears to be coming to an end in Pittsburgh; whether or not that means the Bucs will make it back to the postseason for the first time since 1992 remains to be seen, but they have taken a few steps with recent deadline acquisitions in hopes of playing on in October. Rodriguez, along with a teammate from that 2005 Houston squad, reliever Chad Qualls, are two of the pick-ups. Pittsburgh also beefed up the offense by acquiring outfielder Travis Snider from Toronto and first baseman Gaby Sanchez from the Marlins.

Rodriguez's first start for the Pirates ironically came against the Astros last Saturday in Houston. Nerves from facing his former teammates so quickly may have played into it, but the Dominican southpaw was uncharacteristically wild with a season-high five walks in six innings, allowing all three Houston runs in six innings. He left the game tied and Pittsburgh ultimately got a 4-3 dubya laying 170 chalk in the contest.

More irony is his final start for the Astros came at home to the Reds on July 23 when he faced Latos. In fact, he and Latos have hooked up twice this season, both games taking place in Houston and both won by Cincinnati. The Reds took Rodriguez to the woodshed in one of those games, hammering four long balls en route to a 12-9 victory. Rodriguez's only outing in Cincinnati this season was a winning performance in late April (6 IP, 2 ER).

While Latos will be opposing Rodriguez for a third time in 2012, it will be just his second appearance this year against the Pirates. He tossed six shutout frames in Pittsburgh on May 6, allowing but two hits while striking out 11, to give him a perfect 3-0 record in four career starts vs. the Pirates (2.16 ERA).

Rodriguez won't have to face Cincinnati 1B Joey Votto who is on the disabled list following minor knee surgery, and who has done very well in past confrontations. However, Wandy will have to face Ryan Ludwick who has batted .317 in 41 previous at bats vs. the lefty, and has been heating up since the two faced off in Houston on July 23. Including that game, Ludwick was hitting .482 in eight tilts with four home runs and 15 RBI before Thursday when he was not in the starting lineup.

Cincinnati could be without 2B Brandon Phillips on Friday due to a calf injury. Keep an eye on the Don Best Pro Odds for updates before making your wagering decision. Pittsburgh was not reporting any new injuries on their roster.

Tigers open series with slumping Indians Friday

CLEVELAND INDIANS (50-55)

at DETROIT TIGERS (55-50)

First pitch: Friday, 7:05 p.m. EDT
Line: Detroit -145, Cleveland +135, Total: 9

The slumping Indians try to snap a six-game losing skid when they head to Detroit for a three-game weekend series starting Friday night.

Cleveland has been pounded during this road trip, getting outscored 48-17 in the six defeats to the Twins and Royals, the two worst teams in the American League. The Tigers are also slumping, losing five of their past seven contests, but the struggling offense appeared to break out of its funk on Wednesday with seven runs on 12 hits, including three home runs, in the series finale in Boston. On Friday, the Detroit batters will be eager to take their cuts against Justin Masterson who has a 6.59 ERA and 1.74 WHIP in his past five starts. The Tigers counter with newly-acquired Anibal Sanchez on Friday. He didn’t fare too well in his first outing since being traded from Miami, allowing five runs (3 HR) in six innings versus the Blue Jays. But Sanchez has already faced the Indians once this year, holding them to just two runs on seven hits over seven strong innings on May 19, fanning four and walking two. This game will come down to offense, and the Tigers certainly sport a better lineup with 23 more runs than Cleveland has this year. Also, the Indians have the second-worst road record in the American League (23-30, .434), while the Tigers have won 11 of their past 12 home games. The play here is DETROIT to win the series opener.

Masterson (7-9, 4.47 ERA, 1.38 WHIP) has not enjoyed pitching on the road this year, going 3-5 with a 6.05 ERA and 1.57 WHIP. Although Masterson’s career numbers versus Detroit are pretty terrible (1-4, 4.59 ERA, 1.63 WHIP), he did pitch well in his lone start against the Tigers this season, leading his team to a 2-1 win on May 24. In that outing, Masterson lasted seven innings, allowing just one run on five hits. But he also had more walks (5) than strikeouts (4) that day. He knows he’ll need to pitch deep into this game, considering the Cleveland bullpen has the second-highest ERA in the American League at 3.97 this season. The Indians are 7-2 versus the Tigers this season.

Sanchez (5-8, 4.11 ERA, 1.28 WHIP) has never pitched in Comerica Park, but his lifetime numbers versus American League teams aren’t good: 3-6, 5.18 ERA and 1.52 WHIP in 14 games (13 starts). Although his last outing was poor, Sanchez did close out his Marlins tenure with three straight quality starts, all on the road. In this span, he had a 2.70 ERA and 1.15 WHIP, racking up 18 K’s and just two walks in 20 innings. Sanchez, who has averaged 6.4 innings per start this year, can’t rely too much on his bullpen to bail him out, considering its mediocre 3.67 ERA and 1.30 WHIP this season.

Friday, August 3

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Friday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

STREAKING

Matt Moore, Tampa Bay Rays (7-7, 4.01 ERA)

Moore tossed 6 1-3 scoreless innings to pick up the win against the Angels Saturday. The lefty has been impressive over his last three starts, allowing just four earned runs over 19 1-3 innings while recording 16 strikeouts. He puts his 1.86 ERA since the All-Star break on the line versus the Orioles at home in his next start.

Ryan Vogelsong, San Francisco Giants (8-5, 2.22 ERA)

Vogelsong surrendered two runs (one earned) over six innings during Sunday's 4-0 loss to the Dodgers. The effort marked Vogelsong's 16th straight quality start and he's been quality in 18 of 19 starts this season. The hurler will make his next appearance against the Rockies at Coors Field.

SLUMPING

Justin Masterson, Cleveland Indians (7-9, 4.47)

Masterson was lit up for 10 runs (eight earned) over 5 2-3 innings and took the loss against the Twins Saturday. The righty started the contest by tossing three scoreless frames before imploding in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Masterson has a 6.05 ERA on the road heading into his next start in Detroit.

Jeremy Guthrie, Kansas City Royals (0-2, 9.58 ERA)

Guthrie fell to 3-11 on the year after giving up six runs on 11 hits over 5 1-3 innings against the Mariners Friday. The righty was also touched up for five runs in his Royals debut on July 22 against the Twins and it shouldn’t be long before the club tires of him and calls up another pitcher from Triple-A. Guthrie has to find a way to turn things around against the high-powered Rangers Friday.

Friday's betting tips: Big Ben could have shoulder troubles

Weather to watch

Houston Astros at Atlanta Braves: A 50 percent chance of thunderstorms throughout the evening hours could cause delays at Turner Field.

Who’s hot?

The Seattle Mariners are winners of seven straight and have 14 victories in their last 19 games. They'll be put to the test in a three-game set with the Yankees beginning Friday.

Who’s not?

The Cleveland Indians have lost five straight and are falling out of contention in the AL Central. They're seven games back of the White Sox for the division lead heading into action Thursday.

Key stat

Albert Pujols is the fourth player in history to reach the 1,400-RBI mark in his first 12 seasons, joining Joe DiMaggio, Al Simmons and Lou Gehrig.

Game of the day

Los Angeles Angels at Chicago White Sox (+124)

Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger says he isn't concerned about the "little torn rotator cuff" in his right arm.

"I'm good. It's OK, just sore," he said when asked about the injury Thursday. "I have a little torn rotator cuff. That doesn't heal. We just have to hope it doesn't tear the rest of the way,"

Notable quotable

“Everyone deserves a second chance in financial situations.”- Jose Canseco after filing for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in Nevada.

Betting notes

- Nationals SP Jordan Zimmermann’s next scheduled start has been pushed back from Friday to Saturday due to minor shoulder inflammation.

- The Philadelphia Phillies are 38-31 (.550) on weekdays this season heading into action Thursday and just 9-26 (.257) on Saturday and Sunday.

- Miami OF Giancarlo Stanton, out since July 7 with a right knee injury, could begin a rehab assignment with Class-A Jupiter on Friday. Stanton, who has 19 homers and 50 RBIs, may return to the majors next week barring any setbacks.

Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

-- LSU is first preseason #1 college football team since 1997 that doesn't have its QB back from the year before. That said, LSU's QB last year was awful, so the new guy almost has to be an upgrade.

-- Ten years ago, Mike Davis coached Indiana to the Final Four; he went on to UAB, where his teams fizzled out. Now he's new coach at Texas Southern, as his career appears headed in the wrong direction.

-- Nebraska has a new 16,000 basketball arena opening next year; they're about to get better under coach Tim Miles, who built a strong program at North Dakota State. If you can win there, you can win anywhere.

-- Ryan Dempster lasted 4.2 innings in his Texas debut, giving up eight runs to the Angels. Not exactly what the Rangers were looking for.

-- Guy who bought the Cleveland Browns is older brother of Tennessee's governor, Bill Haslam; he owns 550 truck stops/travel plazas. Seeing as he paid $1B+ for the Browns, truck stops must be a profitable business.

-- 37 rare baseball cards found in an Ohio attic brought back $565,332 in an auction Thursday night. Go clean out your attics, people......

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Random stuff with the weekend here....

13) How can David Stern, or any NBA executive watch these Olympic basketball games and not see that the game played under FIBA rules is a better game than it is under NBA rules?

More passing/shooting, less pounding the ball with the dribble on isolation plays. Let teams play any defense they want, then its real basketball, but not until then.

12) France-Lithuania game early Thursday morning was great fun to watch; fast-paced, good passing, very spirited play, the way basketball was meant to be played. I am told the Brazil-Russia game in the afternoon was also excellent.

USA-Nigeria? Not so much.

11) I had no idea that Olympic medal winners also got money: $25K for gold medals, $15K for silver, $10K for bronze. Why does no one mention this? Michael Phelps bagged $200,000 back in '08. Not bad.

10) Tony Parker is wearing goggles to protect the eye he injured in a fracas in a nightclub this spring. All five starters on the French team are either in the NBA or were at one time.

9) Showtime’s reality show on the Miami Marlins is very interesting and more up-to-date than I thought it would be. Still strikes me as odd that David Samson, the Marlins’ President, is owner Jeffrey Luria’s stepson. Inquiring minds want to see the mom.

8) Cliff Lee is owed $87M over next three years; am curious to see if Lee passes through waivers, and the $87M makes that more likely, which team would Philly trade him to (Texas makes most sense)? Phillies keeping Cole Hamels over Lee is smart, since Hamels is lot younger, and better.

7) Falcons/Cowboys are both 18-1 to win the NFC; why? Atlanta is not only better than Dallas, they’re in an easier division, with New Orleans having their coaching issues this year. Dallas has to battle Giants (two SB titles in last five years) and the Eagles just in their own division.

At 36-1, Falcons are good longshot to win a Super Bowl, as long as they improve on their 4th-and-1 plays this year.

6) Saints’ over/under for wins is still 10; I just don’t see them winning ten games. Football players don’t do well in unusual circumstances; the Saints’ HC and GM are both suspended for the year, and the interim head coach is gone until Week 7!!!! How does this end well? Who decides if they punt on 4th-and-1? If Drew Brees ever got hurt, they’d be a 3-13 team.

5) Baseball has made Marlins’ closer Heath Bell a wealthy guy, but he never made his high school baseball team until he was a senior.

4) Over/under on games Peyton Manning plays before missing a game due to injury is 8.5, with over a -$170 favorite, under a +$140 underdog. Until last year, Manning had never missed a game due to injury.

3) Carlos Lee turned down trades to the Dodgers/Bronx, but accepted one to the Marlins. Why would you want a guy who obviously cares so little about winning? If you’re a competitor, don’t you want to play in a pennant race?

2) Reno-Tahoe PGA golf tournament, which is played in high altitude, has switched to the modified Stableford scoring system that was formerly used at the now-defunct International tournament that was played in Colorado. Rather than play against par, players get two points for a birdie, five for an eagle, lose one for a bogey. It rewards risk taking more than stroke play.

1) Francisco Liriano averaged 12.9 swings/misses per start with Minnesota this year, with a miss rate of 31.9% on opponents’ swings. His first start for the White Sox was against his old team and they did even worse against him, missing on 17 of 44 swings, a 38.6% clip. Liriano has always had big talent but hasn’t always shown grit in tough situations.

Unusual that after watching him pitch for several years, his old teammates did worse against Liriano than the rest of the league does.
