Never crossed my mind, guys. Honestly. I would say better nutrition, training methods and science more than anything. Look at the big leap from 1896 to 1912. Most of the 3 second improvement over the last 116 years was made in that time span. Humans didn't sudden evolve into better runners in 16 years.

2 other big factors:

1. Starting blocks were not used until mid century.

2. The synthetic track surfaces run much faster than concrete or asphalt.
