I think if you pay the tax in your home country you get a credit against the us income tax owed. I should know this as Im studying tax law but i dont

This is what I think. He would file a non resident return. Receive a credit for foreign tax paid. I don't know the tax brackets for non residents.

Brackets are same as for citizens. He would get credit for the foreign tax paid and pay the difference. I am not sure what GB's rules are as far as foreign income goes, I think they are very lenient and may not be taxing it. He will also be burdened by the state tax where the profits occurred. It also depends on how many days he spends in the US as he could potentially lose the non-resident status and have to pay US tax on worldwide income.

he has to pay taxes to the states on income he earns in the states

he probably even has to pay income tax to whatever individual state he won money in

it gets crazy for US athletes / performing artists, they have to pay income taxes to the states they play in on a prorated basis

Willie stated it correctly. Just NBA players pay 9.04% state tax when they play in california for games played against Lakers/Clippers/Kings/Warriors, regardless of the state they reside in.
