Last Train To Memphis is an excellent book about Elvis's early life. Not as easy a read as one may expect but worth the time if you are a fan of the fifties and the origins of rock and roll.

by far the largest turn out for Elvis week ever here... Beale St. has been nutso all week from 10am - whenever and the Tunica casinos have been busy as well...Beale is really a good time with all the bars having Elvis contests and stuff... last night 75-80k people showed up at Graceland for the vigil...i think they were guesstimating around 30-40k tops....its in a really shitty almost ghetto part of town, but it all seemed to go smooth...

Ill probably never leave this shithole city, so i have to take advantage of the few good weeks when most people would rather have fun than do the normal dumb shit that always gets the city in the papers..lolz

Hey, at least you have some of the best BBQ in the world there. When I stayed there for a couple months I guess I never saw the shithole parts of the city. I was mostly on the east side. It was a nice area. There could be worse places to live than Memphis.

Top 5 famous American of all time ? As in most famous that is..

Impossible to create that list I suppose when taking into account the history of this country.

If you discounted historical figures like Abraham Lincoln, John Kennedy, Franklin Roosevelt, Martin Luther King, etc. Elvis Presley might just be the most famous American at least in our generation. When I was in Japan during my service years, the Japanesse people were fascinated by Elvis. Any story you could relate about Elvis was just beloved by the people. When you hold that much interest on the other side of the world, even before the internet, you have to really marvel. When I was a kid we still lived with my grandparents. I had just gotten old enough to go with my grandfather into the fields to work. Not so much as a employee but more of a tag along. We came in for the day and my grandmother told us that Elvis Presely had died and it was really a shock in my young life. I still refer to it as the Summer That Elvis Died. Elvis really came from nothing in his roots to become one of the most famous people who ever lived. Could be the best example of the American Dream ever documented.

stay out of the north and south areas of the city and you will be just fine... thats where the gang/ghettos are and sprinkle in some white trailer trash on the north side and you have the majority of the cities bad stats... downtown continues to get cleaner as far as living and new businesses...i agree, it could be worse... i didnt go to the vigil stuff, but have been enjoying some stuff on beale...during the week, its a good time and just not too crowded...saturdays are the nights where (its probably 90-10 black) you really would rather avoid beale st .... even though cops are everywhere, its hard to feel real secure... this week, people really seem to have more fun and there is less trouble...its fukkin crazy all the out of towners who come here for the Elvis experience...

Memphis has been represented by it's murders and shown so many times on the show The First 48 that I almost know the investigators by name.
