White Sox Host New York Yankees On ESPN2

The Wednesday night battle between the New York Yankees and Chicago White Sox features two division leaders who need to keep winning to stay on top.

The Don Best odds screen has opened with New York as 115 road ‘dogs with a total of 8½ runs. First pitch from the Windy City’s South Side will be a little past 8:00 p.m. (ET) for this 3-game series finale on ESPN2.

This matchup got underway Monday night with the White Sox pounding out a 9-6 win. They lead the AL Central by two games over the Detroit Tigers are 16-5 in their last 21 home games dating back to late June.

New York has a 4-game lead over Tampa Bay in the AL East, but the hard-charging Rays have won 5-straight and 12-of-14 overall. The Bronx Bombers are treading water lately in alternating between wins and losses their last six games.

Note these stats do not include Tuesday’s Game 2 which is still pending. Chicago is a small 109 favorite (total of nine) with the recently acquired Francisco Liriano squaring off against Ivan Nova.

The pitching matchup on Wednesday is a good one with New York’s Phil Hughes (12-10, 4.23 ERA) against AL Cy Young candidate Chris Sale (14-4, 2.72 ERA). However, both guys have had some hiccups of late and some betting trends to take note of.

Hughes is coming off a home win (6-4) versus Boston last Friday, allowing four unearned runs over seven innings. His problem has been on the road this season (3-7, 5.31 ERA), going 0-4 with a 6.75 ERA the last four.

New York is just 1-12 in Hughes’ last 13 road starts against a team with a winning record.

The 26-year-old right-hander beat the White Sox this year on July 1 (two earned runs over eight innings), but it was at Yankee Stadium. He does have a sterling .84 ERA in a limited 10 2/3 career innings (four appearances) at U.S. Cellular Field.

Sale has been a revelation in his first year as a starter, but more human his last five starts (2-3, 4.67 ERA). Homers have been a big problem with eight over that span after just five in his first 17 outings.

The 23-year-old lefty won his last two home starts over Kansas City (4-2) and Oakland (7-3) despite allowing four total dingers. He’s 7-2 with a 1.80 ERA in 10 home starts this year and this is his first career start against New York.

This is the second series between the teams this year, splitting four in the Bronx previously. The loss on Monday ended a 6-game Yankees winning streak at U.S. Cellular going back to 2010.

Chicago centerfielder Alejandro De Aza (oblique) is out indefinitely. He’s third on the team in at-bats (445) and has a .744 OPS.

Hunter & O's Close Series With Holland, Rangers

Tommy Hunter enjoyed a lot of success at Rangers Ballpark early in his career. A 1st-round pick out of Alabama by Texas in 2007, he climbed through the minors quickly and posted a 14-4 record with a 3.57 ERA off this mound working primarily as a starting pitcher from 2008-11.

One thing Hunter never did in this stadium, however, was pitch the bottom of the first inning. That's something he will experience for the first time Wednesday night when he gets the call for the Baltimore Orioles in their series finale against the Rangers.

Derek Holland, a former minor and major league teammate of Hunter's, will oppose him in the 8:05 p.m. (ET) start. Early bird odds made the Rangers $1.90 favorites with a 10½-run total priced to the 'under.'

Wednesday's duel is a rematch from the second game of a doubleheader played in Baltimore earlier this season, a 7-3 decision in Holland's favor with Texas priced at -170 for that clash. Holland allowed three unearned runs in his six innings of work while Hunter was touched for four runs in six frames to suffer the defeat.

Holland has yet to decision this month with Texas 2-1 in his three assignments. It has been a trying season overall for the southpaw who has endured four outings since the all-star break in which he allowed at least five runs. He cruised through five scoreless innings at Yankee Stadium about a week ago before getting chased in the sixth when New York tallied five before he could finish the frame. Texas' offense bailed him out with six late runs in a 10-6 triumph.

Home has not be so sweet for Holland who owns a bloated 5.60 ERA at Rangers Ballpark with Texas 4-6 in his 10 assignments. He did have a nice showing in the Lone Star State his last time on this mound, working into the eighth against a strong Tigers lineup and allowing just a run while striking out nine.

Hunter hasn't won a game since his first start of the second half, and the O's have dropped four of his last five assignments. We noted when he was about to take on Justin Verlander and Detroit last week that the long ball has long been Hunter's downfall, and he surrendered two more clouts to the Tigers in their 5-3 win to bring his total to 29 HR in less than 120 innings this year. Hunter didn't figure into the decision after allowing three runs in his six innings.

Neither club is reporting any new injuries in the past week or so. Baltimore expects to get 3B Wilson Betemit (wrist) back from the disabled list in about a week, but he could be relegated more to a DH role when he does return with rookie Manny Machado having taken over the hot corner with some encouraging results.

Texas has gone nearly two weeks without the services of C-DH Mike Napoli (quad). He's eligible to come off the DL this weekend, but will likely remain out until next week at the earliest.

This series opened Monday when Texas scored a 5-1 victory as a $1.70 favorite. Tuesday's middle game of the set was still in progress and featured a mound duel between Baltimore's Chris Tillman and Scott Feldman of the Rangers who were even heavier chalk at -180.

Monday's victory was the fourth straight at home in the series for Texas and gave the Rangers four wins in the first five contests between the club this season. Dating back to April 2011, Texas had won nine of 10 from the O's.

Wednesday Matinee Tips

August 21, 2012

Even though the NFL regular season is on the horizon, there is still six weeks remaining before the MLB postseason. The Wednesday baseball card is loaded with action during the day though the late-night, but we'll focus on the five matinee affairs. The day begins in St. Petersburg as the Rays look to stay red-hot against Kansas City.

Royals at Rays - 1:05 PM EST

Tampa Bay has stormed back into the Wild Card race with wins in nine of the last 12 games, including a victory in Monday's opener against Kansas City. The Rays are receiving tremendous pitching at the right time, allowing three runs or less in 19 of the previous 23 games (17-6), but dropped a 1-0 extra-innings decision to the Royals on Tuesday. James Shields (11-7, 4.03 ERA) is unbeaten in his last four trips to the mound, as the Rays own a solid 8-3 record during his 11 day starts. Shields dominated the Angels in his last outing as a $1.40 road underdog, 12-3, while winning his seventh outing in 10 road decisions.

The Royals counter with Luis Mendoza (7-8, 4.26 ERA), who has won three of his previous four starts, all in the 'dog role. Since re-entering the rotation in early June, Mendoza has hit the 'under' in nine of 12 trips to the mound, including five of six road starts. Kansas City is winless in each of its last seven matinee away contests, while halting a six-game skid at Tropicana Field in Tuesday's victory.

Cubs at Brewers - 2:10 PM EST

Both these rivals are out of playoff contention, as they wrap up their three-game set at Miller Park. Milwaukee grabbed Monday's opener with an eight-run fifth inning to top Chicago, 9-5 as $1.50 home favorites for its ninth home victory to 11 tries. The Brewers send out ace Yovani Gallardo (12-8, 3.67 ERA), who seeks his fifth consecutive win, while allowing six earned runs in his last four victories. Gallardo has split a pair of starts against the Cubs this season, including a 10-0 defeat at Miller Park in early June as $1.50 favorite.

The Cubs have struggled all season, but not as much as Travis Wood (4-9, 4.83 ERA), who is winless in his previous seven trips to the mound. The last time the southpaw picked up a victory came before the All-Star break in an 8-7 triumph over the Mets as a $1.60 road underdog, the final win of a personal four-game winning streak. Wood tries to get on track even though the Cubs are 2-13 the last 15 day games away from Wrigley Field, while Chicago is 0-2 in Wood's two matinee starts on the highway.

Twins at Athletics - 3:35 PM EST

Minnesota snapped a five-game skid by blowing out Oakland on Monday night, 7-2, while cashing as healthy $1.60 underdogs. The Twins also avenged a sweep at the hands of the A's at Target Field immediately after the All-Star break, which provided Oakland with plenty of momentum for a playoff run. The A's begin Wednesday's action just a ½ game behind the Orioles for the second Wild Card spot in the American League, as Oakland sends out Tom Milone (9-9, 4.03 ERA) for the series finale.

Milone has failed to notch a victory in his last four starts, even though Oakland rallied past Cleveland in his previous outing, 6-4 as $1.25 home 'chalk.' The southpaw allowed a grand slam, but the A's managed to tally six unanswered runs in the first win as part of a three-game sweep of the Tribe. Milone has struggled during the daytime, winning just one of five starts under the sun, but the 'over' is riding a four-game streak in his last four outings. The Twins send out Liam Hendriks (0-5, 7.04 ERA), who searches for his first career win in 13 starts. Hendriks was recalled from Triple-A Rochester to replace Nick Blackburn, who allowed five earned runs in Friday's 5-3 loss at Seattle.

Indians at Mariners - 3:40 PM EST

Two teams going in opposite directions finish up a three-game set at Safeco Field as the Mariners try to stay hot before hitting the road for seven games. Since trading Ichiro Suzuki on July 23, Seattle owns a strong 18-9 record, including a 15-3 mark at home. The Indians have limped to a 10-28 record since the All-Star break, while Manny Acta's club is just 1-17 the previous 18 games away from Progressive Field following Tuesday's 5-1 defeat.

Seattle is building a solid rotation past Felix Hernandez and Jason Vargas, as righty Hisashi Iwakuma (4-3, 4.79 ERA) goes for his third consecutive win. Iwakuma has turned in quality starts in four of his last six starts, including a pair of home victories over the Twins and Blue Jays. Seattle is riding a consistent 'under' stretch at Safeco Field during the day, going 8-1-1 to the 'under' the last 10 home matinee contests. Zach McAllister (5-4, 3.64 ERA) has won only one of his six previous starts for the Tribe, while Cleveland is 4-1 in his next outing after he lost in his last trip to the mound.

Marlins at Diamondbacks - 3:40 PM EST (G1/DH)

For some reason, when Ozzie Guillen's club heads to the West Coast, they fare very well. Miami swept San Francisco and San Diego back in May, while grabbing the first two contests of this four-game series at Arizona, including rallying from a 5-0 deficit in last night's 6-5 triumph. Arizona can't afford to lose ground in the tightly contested NL Wild Card race, as the D-Backs enter the day five games back of Atlanta. A pair of young hurlers take the mound in the first game of this day-night doubleheader in Phoenix.

Jacob Turner makes his Miami debut after being acquired from Detroit in the trade for Anibal Sanchez and Omar Infante. Turner went 1-1 in three starts with the Tigers, while allowing 11 earned runs in 12.1 innings of work. He'll be opposed by heralded rookie Tyler Skaggs, who put together a 4-2 record with a 2.91 ERA at Triple-A Reno. The Marlins have fared well against left-handed starters on the road, compiling a 10-5 mark the last 15 games in this situation.

Wednesday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

STREAKING

Yovani Gallardo, Milwaukee Brewers (12-8, 3.67)

Gallardo pitched seven innings of one-run ball Friday, scattering four hits during a convincing victory versus Philadelphia. He now has four consecutive quality starts, picking up the win in all four with a 1.88 ERA and 26:8 K:BB ratio in 28 2/3 frames. The righty takes on the Cubs on Wednesday.

Kris Medlen, Atlanta Braves (4-1, 2.03)

Medlen tossed a five-hit shutout to earn his fourth win of the season Thursday. The right-hander has allowed just three runs in 25 2/3 innings with a 22:4 K:BB ratio since joining the starting rotation. He has a tough road start in Washington next time out.

SLUMPING

Anibal Sanchez, Detroit Tigers (6-10, 4.52)

Sanchez has struggled since joining the Tigers, posting a 7.97 ERA in four starts. The former Marlin has spent the past week with Tigers pitching coach Jeff Jones to help work on his pitch location and keeping the ball low. He toes the rubber at home against the Blue Jays next.

Jered Weaver, Los Angeles Angels (15-3, 2.74)

Weaver got lit up Friday, surrendering a career-worst nine runs on eight hits to the Rays in a 12-3 defeat. The righty has suffered back-to-back losses for the first time this season and now must face his demons at Fenway Park. Weaver is 1-3 with a 7.16 ERA in 32 2/3 career innings pitched in Boston.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What bettors need to know: Giants at Dodgers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

San Francisco Giants at Los Angeles Dodgers (100, 6.5)

Even if San Francisco completes a three-game sweep of Los Angeles on Wednesday, the National League West race is likely headed for a photo finish. The teams have flip-flopped between first and second place three times in the last five days, with the Giants now 1 1/2 games ahead of the Dodgers. After Wednesday’s series finale, the teams will meet six more times this season, including a season-ending three-game set at Chavez Ravine. The Dodgers have scored two runs on 11 hits in the first two games of the series, and they’ll face Cy Young award candidate Matt Cain in the finale.

The Dodgers’ Matt Kemp snapped an 0-for-21 slump with a single in the ninth inning on Tuesday, but Andre Ethier’s struggles continued. Ethier went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts on Tuesday, and he’s hitless in his last 14 at-bats. San Francisco is 4-2 since losing outfielder Melky Cabrera to a 50-game suspension, and Angel Pagan appears determined to fill the void left by the disgraced slugger. Pagan had three hits on Tuesday and is 11-for-23 with three doubles, a triple and five runs over his last five games. With Tuesday’s win, the Giants improved to 5-0-1 in their six road series since the All-Star break.

TV: 10:10 p.m. ET, CSNBA (San Francisco), KCAL (Los Angeles)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Giants RH Matt Cain (12-5, 2.90 ERA) vs. Dodgers LH Chris Capuano (11-8, 3.14)

Cain improved to 3-2 with a 3.61 ERA in seven starts since the All-Star break after allowing one run over eight innings last Friday against the San Diego Padres. Cain is 3-0 with a 2.14 ERA in his last six starts against Los Angeles, including his outing on July 27 when he allowed three runs over seven innings.

Capuano has been sharp in his past three starts, including last Friday against the Atlanta Braves when he allowed three runs over 7 1/3 innings. Capuano has gone 5-4 with a 2.17 ERA in 12 starts at Dodger Stadium this season. He’s 1-5 with a 5.00 ERA in 10 career games (six starts) against San Francisco.

TRENDS
*Giants are 6-1 in their last seven vs. National League West.
*Dodgers are 0-5 in Capuano's last five starts vs. National League West.
*Over is 9-1 in Giants' last 10 road games vs. a left-handed starter.
*Under is 5-0 in Dodgers' last five overall.

UMPIRE TRENDS- Chris Guccione
*Home team is 6-1 in Gucciones last seven games behind home plate vs. Los Angeles.
*Under is 4-1 in Gucciones last five Wednesday games behind home plate.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Giants are hitting .342 (67-for-196) with runners in scoring position this month, which is the highest average in the majors.

2. The Dodgers optioned RHP Javy Guerra to Triple-A Albuquerque and activated RHP Rubby De La Rosa from the 60-day disabled list

3. San Francisco is 47-16 (.746) when scoring first this season.

Wednesday's betting tips: Mariners hot at home

Weather to watch

The weather forecasts look promising for 15 games on the MLB slate today. Expect the retractable roof to be closed at Chase Field in Arizona, where there’s a 50 percent chance of precipitation this afternoon.

Who’s hot?

Felix Hernandez allowed one run in 7 2/3 innings in the first start following his perfect game to lead the Mariners to their seventh straight victory, beating the Indians 5-1 on Tuesday. Seattle, which has won 14 of its last 15 contests at Safeco Field, has not had an eight-game winning streak since June 23-July 1, 2007.

Who’s not?

The Tribe tries to avoid an eighth consecutive loss Wednesday. The Indians, who are 1-7 on their nine-game road trip, have lost 17 of 18 away from home and 20 of 24 overall.

Key stat

Jacksonville Jaguars running back Maurice Jones-Drew gained 47.7 percent of the team’s total yards last season, the highest percentage in the NFL.

Game of the day

New York Yankees at Chicago White Sox (-130, 8.5)

Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Los Angeles Clippers point guard Chris Paul underwent successful surgery Tuesday to repair a torn ligament in his right thumb. Paul is expected to be out of action for approximately eight weeks, which means he would miss the majority of training camp and the preseason. He should be ready for the Clippers’ opener Oct. 31 against Memphis.

Notable quotable

“I’m going to make a prediction. If Roger throws well for the Skeeters, two or three outings, it wouldn’t surprise me if we saw him at Minute Maid (Park).” Nolan Ryan predicting Roger Clemens will be pitching for the Houston Astros in the near future. Clemens is making a comeback attempt at the age of 50 with the Sugar Land Skeeters of the independent Atlantic League.

Betting news and notes

-Baltimore starter Tommy Hunter is 14-4 with a 3.58 ERA in 30 career games at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington.

-New York Yankees left-hander CC Sabathia declared himself ready to return to the rotation after a pain-free bullpen session on Tuesday. He could return Friday at Cleveland.

-Houston hasn’t won a series in an NL opponent’s park this season. The Astros are 12-49 on the road.

-The Giants are hitting .342 (67-for-196) with runners in scoring position this month, which is the highest average in the majors.

***********

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud...........

13) Former big league pitcher Ron Darling is an excellent analyst on Mets’ telecasts; he was talking about the Little League World Series, how they have pitch counts but let kids throw curve balls; he estimated more than half the pitches in the game he saw were curves, which can screw up a young kid’s arm, if thrown too often or with poor mechanics. Doesn’t make sense to allow curves if you’re preaching safety by having a pitch count.

12) How ridiculously deep is LSU’s football program?

Houston Texans have a 5-foot-5 return man named Trindon Holliday who already has run both a punt and a kickoff back for TD’s this summer; he was on LSU’s football team for two years, but only got into one game, yet he’s run two kicks back for TD’s in NFL games, even if they were exhibition games. What an abundance of talent LSU has!!!

Holliday won an national title as part of LSU’s 4 x 100 relay team in 2008, so he may be short, but he’s fast as hell.

11) Stupid Scheduling 101: Eagles play Cleveland this Friday, then play the Browns in two weeks, in the season opener. Teams will show as little as possible to each other, so once again, fans paying full price are going to see a glorified scrimmage.

10) Red Sox fired pitching coach Bob McClure Monday; I have two thoughts, other than the obviou-- this isn't his fault!!!!
a) It is stupid to hire a manager, especially an experienced one, and not let him bring his own coaching staff with him.
b) From what I’ve read in the Boston papers, Bobby Valentine is a very bright guy who has almost no people skills. He doesn’t get along with many people. Wonder what the ESPN Sunday Night crew thought of him?

9) Former Colorado pitching coach Bob Apodaca was pitching coach when Valentine managed the Mets; he is rumored to be the Sox’ pitching coach if Valentine is around next March, which would make him Boston’s fifth pitching coach in 30 months.

8) I’m not inferring anything here, just reporting facts: Mariners were 42-55 when they traded Ichiro Suzuki, they’re 18-9 since then. Bronx Bombers are 15-13 since acquiring Suzuki; they were 59-38 before the trade.

7) NFL’s lawyers must be relieved to hear the San Diego County medical examiner say that Junior Seau had no brain damage from playing football. Someone online last week published a study that said former NFL players actually live longer than former baseball players. Interesting.

6) ESPN is doing an hour-long, all-access show on Ohio State football. Good exposure for (former ESPN employee) Urban Meyer’s program.

5) Eagles’ backup QB Nick Foles looked better Monday night than he ever did playing for the Arizona Wildcats. Andy Reid’s team does a superior job of coaching QB’s.

4) Not sure what motivated the A’s to announce their acquiring Stephen Drew during Monday night’s game, while a player he will be replacing on the roster was still playing in the game. Seemed insensitive; not like Drew is such a huge acquisition that it deemed an immediate announcement.

3) I’m amazed by the number people on Twitter who take pictures of their food and then post them; why do this?

2) According to people at LVH, hot plays for season over/under win totals are: Bears, over; Miami and New England, under.

1) If you have a gut feeling that the Super Bowl this year will be Jaguars-Vikings, you can get 10,000-1 odds on that online. I’m just sayin’……..
