I really dont think in ONE persons life span in history has there been a situation in advances in life, like we have now, for instance,

depend on your age, you have seen man go to space,
you have witnessed personally an era where, just a few years ago, the possibility of a black man in the white house was so laughable that they would have thought you were nuts.
You have witnessed the introduction of Water being SOLD in supermarkets,
You have seen the introduction of video games, in its primacy to full fledged practical unable to distinguish what computer generated to real.

You have seen the 8 Track tapes, cassette players to betamax/VHS tapes to CD's to DVDS, to Bluray, to MP3 players

You have seen computers from screens that look like a box, to flat screen, from 14in to 70in,

From one cable channel to over 600 plus

from radio to Satellite radio,

From guys wearing jackets and opening doors for girls to kids with their asses out and becoming girls.

From getting well dressed when taking a flight on a plane to wearing flip flops and a pair of shorts

From no power windows in your car, to talking to your car. and even the damn thing parks itself

From having a pet cat or dog, to signing over $40 millions in a will to your cat

from waiting over a week to two weeks, or more to see your new grand daughters photo that was born in europe to seeing it live, or a picture in less than 5 minutes after birth

the list goes on and on, I cannot recall another generation that was able to "witness" such a variety of advances in the living life time.

EX, some persons lived a life of knowing a horse and cart, and there was no change in their life time to witness any other advancement.

I'd cast a vote for the generation born shortly before the turn of the 20th century. In their lifetime they went from flying being just a made-up story to people walking on the moon; from electricity being a rarity to radios, televisions and telephones in almost every house.

...from rifles and cannons to Hiroshima and gas chambers. Lots of horrific changes as well.

One invention that comes to mind that helped jump start the whole process of transporation was the internal combustion engine. Once man went from steam to coal to gasoline/kerosene power things began to accelerate. The internal combustion engine allowed man to create work with horsepower. Tractors, dump trucks, and heavy equipement can now can be used to build roads, bridges, dams, and canals. Jeeps and tanks now can be used to win World War II. Commerical aircraft is now possible and bombers and fighters were invaluable in the war effort also. Communications and information aspects of progress may have had a primary invention that spurred their advancement, but transportation advances all can be traced back to the piston and cylinder of the internal combustion engine.
