Sunday: 6-4, - 0.1 units. Not what I had in mind when I announced a winning day on Sunday. Oh well, I really think you have to hang in there, and get hot for a few days to build up your totals. Then hover around or slightly below .500 the rest of the time.

NYY: RL. The Yanks have had other difficult road trips, but almost always start their home stands with a convincing win. If anything, the Yanks are extremely patient and professional, and approach each game as a separate entity- not worrying about a slight dip in the standings or whatever. Henderson Alvarez is the perfect pitcher for NY. Like Aaron Cook they pitch to extreme contact, hoping that batters will swing at their low stuff dropping below the strike zone. The Yankees have had decent success with Alvarez and very good success vs. Cook. Plus Alvarez is getting hit extra hard lately, with less control. 30 hits in his last 16 IPs. This likely means he is elevating his pitches because hitters are not swinging at the low stuff. Phelps faces a long, long struggling Jays team. Unlike Seattle and SD and Oakland, who are used to long bouts of not hitting(and losing), the Jays look fairly despondent. Phelps has not disappointed the very demanding Yankee fans or the mgt. He has faced good hitting teams, held up well, and has a good K:BB ratio for such a young pitcher. He also has a good BP to finish the game.

The Yanks can stack the lineup with lefties, which is sometimes deadly in Yankee Stadium. I can see them wanting to get off on the right track returning from a poor road trip.

Oakland -1. one unit. Seems like a lot of juice on Oakland tonight for a road game. But I think it's warranted. The Indians got great pitching vs. the Yankees last weekend, barely losing 2 out of 3. Yet they have almost no punch in their bats. Some singles, yes, but only 8 extra base hits in the past week. Oakland had 28, with some of the games vs. good Tampa pitching. Anderson, the A's pitcher, has some major league experience, and has produced well as a starter. Cleveland has hit .228 vs. lefties this year. Carmona/ Hernandez has pitched more, but has been not as productive, and sometimes gets absolutely hammered. The A's are excited about being in contention, have played fairly well on the road in the past 2 months, and have a solid BP.

NYY. Sorry. 4 units on the RL.

STL. ML. One unit. Burnett has a history of late season regression, as do the Pirates. Now that football season has started and the Pirates have faded, the excitement is gone in Pittsburgh. The Pirates also have a good middle of the lineup, but have not gotten production from the top or bottom. I am as shocked as anyone as to how good Lohse has been, but he wins and the Cards hit when he's on the mound. Freese should be back for STL.

SD. ML. One unit. Padres are hitting better than ATL, who are coming off a series with contending SF. The Padres sweep in Arizona shows that they are truly a better team this year and a hot team right now. Maholm has been great in the past 2 months but lately a little more like his norm. SD just faced him and at least know what he offers. Casey Kelly in his first start in the majors. I don't know how many times I've seen first game pitchers do well the past few years, but it seems to happen a lot. Kelly has a good repertoire of pitches, is a top prospect, and showed good command in recent minor league starts. The Padres are coming home after a good road trip and might catch ATL a little out of sorts here.

Seattle-1. One unit. Yes the Mariners got swept in Chicago, but each game was a one run loss. The Mariners could have easily taken 2 out of 3, but had rare pitching issues. The mariners are also showing more patience at the plate, walking more and whiffing less. They also have a huge pitching advantage tonight. Felix is a warm weather, mid to late season pitcher. Liam Hendriks has been pretty awful for the Twins, giving up way too many long balls. Being a RHP also helps the Mariners as they struggle more with lefties. The Twins did win in Texas yesterday, but before that were not hitting all that well.

What a horrific ninth inning in the NYY game. 6-4 NYY game in the bag with Soriano on the mound carrying a 33 saves from 35 attempts...at home no less...going up against 3 TOR hitters with 200-235 BAs and Soriano thows a handing curve for a 3 run jack.

Easily one of the worst beats of the year.

Enjoy the money bookies.
