Sinking Pirates Close Series With Cardinals

Paul Simon's Slip Slidin' Away might be a good choice for background music in the upcoming video documenting the Pittsburgh Pirates' 2012 season.

Pittsburgh will look to stop a recent slide in the National League standings Wednesday night with the conclusion of an important series against the St. Louis Cardinals. ESPN will broadcast the contest starting at 7:00 p.m. (ET) as the Bucs send Wandy Rodriguez to the mound against Cardinals rookie Joe Kelly.

Opening MLB odds for the game listed Pittsburgh a slight -110 favorite with an 8½-run total that leaned 'over.'

Just as the lyrics of Simon's hit song go, the Pirates are getting closer to a playoff destination only to see those chances slowly disappearing. They came out of the all-star break in good form, made a few acquisitions near the trade deadline and stood a season-high 16 games over .500 (63-47) following a 7-6 home win against the Diamondbacks on Aug. 8.

Monday's 4-3 setback in the opener of this series left Pittsburgh 5-13 since that point with Tuesday's second game still pending. St. Louis was a slight favorite (-115) in Game 2 which also carried an 8-run total.

Rodriguez was one of the players the Pirates traded for in late-July, picking the seasoned southpaw up from the Houston Astros. He has pitched to a 4.86 ERA in five starts and a relief outing since the swap, with Pittsburgh 1-4 in the starting assignments and Rodriguez's only dubya coming when he was summoned from the 'pen.

That winning relief appearance did come against St. Louis with Wandy tossing two scoreless frames at the end of a 19-inning marathon. It is the only time Rodriguez has faced the Cards this season, though he has plenty of experience against them over the years while pitching in the NL Central (7-11 lifetime record, 3.73 ERA).

When Pittsburgh sat 63-47, St. Louis was 60-51 and trailed the Pirates by 3.5-games for second place in the division. The Cardinals have gone 11-6 since then and were a season-high 14 games above .500 entering Tuesday's game. They had just about turned the tables on the Bucs who were three behind the Redbirds who are now second in NL Central and NL wild card race.

Offense is definitely the name of the game for St. Louis who has not missed slugger Albert Pujols one little bit. The Cards lead the Senior Circuit in scoring (4.94 rpg), and they routinely sport a lineup that includes 5-6 hitters batting in the upper-.290s or better who are capable of beating you with the long ball or their legs.

Kelly has been working in relief the last couple of weeks, including a long stint in that 19-inning match that Rodriguez won. The young right-hander was called up in June to take the place of the injured Jaime Garcia, and will now move back into the rotation in place of Lance Lynn who shifts to the bullpen following a stretch of rough starts. Kelly's relief outing on Aug. 19 is his only experience vs. the Pirates who are 49-45 against righties.

This game will be the final regular season contest between the Cards and Pirates. The victory on Monday was the seventh for St. Louis in 13 meetings, and gave the Redbirds a 62-35 mark at PNC Park. All four games played in Pittsburgh entering Tuesday's tilt failed to reach the total. Game 1 snapped a 4-game 'over' run for the Cards while four of the Pirates' previous five games have gone 'under.'

Cardinals-Pirates wrap up series Wednesday

ST. LOUIS CARDINALS (71-58)

at PITSBURGH PIRATES (69-60)

First pitch: Wednesday, 7:05 p.m. EDT
Line: St. Louis -120, Pittsburgh +110, Total: 8½

In the NL Central’s dogfight for second place and standings in the NL Wild Card, the Pirates will host the Cardinals for the rubber game of a three-game set Wednesday night.

Lefty Wandy Rodriguez takes the hill for the Pirates in this one as the loser of three straight games, a span in which he has a 5.89 ERA with a 1.64 WHIP. Although he has a 4.06 ERA as a starter this season, with a 7-13 record, that ERA balloons to 4.86 in his six games (five starts, one relief outing) since being traded from the Astros to the Pirates. On Wednesday, he faces Joe Kelly, who has also struggled lately with a 4.76 ERA and 1.77 WHIP in his past three outings, despite earning a 2-1 record in this span. Overall, he is in the middle of a solid season though with a 3.41 ERA and 3-5 record in 12 starts. He will ride a hot Cardinals squad that has won six of its past eight games. In the same span, the Pirates have lost six of eight. And the Cardinals should remain hot facing a southpaw, against whom they are 27-12 (.692) this season. As only slight favorites, take ST. LOUIS in this one.

This rare five-star FoxSheets trend also favors the UNDER:

ST. LOUIS is 20-3 UNDER (87.0%, +14.5 Units) in road games vs. an NL team with a team batting average of .250 or worse this season. The average score was ST LOUIS 3.9, OPPONENT 3.2 - (Rating = 5*).

The Cardinals average a whopping 6.1 runs per game against left-handed starters, hitting an incredible .297 with a .362 OBP. Overall, they average 4.9 runs per game, which leads the National League. Kelly, who has never started against Pittsburgh, averages just 5.7 innings per start so he and the subpar Cards bullpen certainly needs that offensive firepower. The St. Louis relievers have a 3.99 ERA on the season and have already blown 16 saves. On the road, this ERA is even worse at 4.61. But given the offensive support they should get here, take the Redbirds.

This will be an important rubber match for the Pirates, who have protected their home field all season with a 39-26 (.600) record there. They have also done well by regularly beating NL Central opponents, against whom they are 32-23 (.582). Rodriguez has yet to face the Cardinals this season, but has won two consecutive decisions against them, carrying a stellar 1.33 ERA and 1.03 WHIP in this three-start span. Overall though, Rodriguez is 6-11 (team 8-12) with a 3.72 ERA and 1.13 WHIP in 20 career starts versus St. Louis. Fortunately for him, he is supported by one of baseball’s best bullpens that carry a 2.96 ERA and 42 saves in 51 chances (82.4%) in 2012. Pirates relievers are even better at home with a 2.75 ERA and 1.10 WHIP.

Wednesday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Streaking

C.C. Sabathia, New York Yankees (13-3, 3.44 ERA)

The Yankees’ hefty lefty picked up where he left off in his return from the DL last week, giving up only one run on four hits and striking out nine in 7 1-3 innings of work versus Cleveland. That win extended Sabathia’s unbeaten streak to nine starts going back to early June.

Cole Hamels, Philadelphia Phillies (14-6, 2.99 ERA)

Hamels was dealt a no-decision in his most recent appearance, failing to tie his career high in wins. The Phillies’ high-priced hurler has been living up to his new contract, however, and hasn’t tasted defeat since August 2. Hamels has struggled with the Mets in the past, posting a career 5-10 record and 4.39 ERA against his NL East rival.

Slumping

Joe Blanton, Los Angeles Dodgers (8-12, 5.12 ERA)

Blanton has struggled since changing coasts, posting a 0-3 mark and 7.71 ERA in four starts for the Dodgers. The former Phillies pitcher hasn’t won a game since July 16 and has allowed 16 earned runs in his last 15 innings of work.

C.J. Wilson, Los Angeles Angels (9-9, 3.83 ERA)

Wilson can’t wait for August to get over. The Angels’ southpaw has just plain sucked this month, going 0-2 with a swollen 8.78 ERA in four August appearances. He gets another shot at the Boston Red Sox Wednesday after allowing six earned runs on eight hits through five innings versus Boston in his most recent outing.

Game of the day: White Sox at Orioles
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago White Sox at Baltimore Orioles

The Baltimore Orioles might not be content with just grabbing a wild card spot in the American League. The Orioles have won four straight and seven of nine to pull into a tie for the lead in the wild card race and draw within 3 1/2 games of the New York Yankees in the American League East. The team currently in the way of the Baltimore surge is the Chicago White Sox, who are trying to claim a playoff berth of their own.

The White Sox had won six straight before dropping the first two of a four-game set to the Orioles and are still two games up on the Detroit Tigers in the AL Central. Chicago suffered a one-run loss in the opener and was held to one hit in seven innings on Tuesday by Chris Tillman, who is one of several players getting another chance and stepping up for Baltimore. Lew Ford is back in the majors for the first time since 2007 and has homered in back-to-back games, while Nate McLouth continues to give the Orioles quality at-bats. The White Sox have lost five in a row on the road.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, WGN (Chicago), MASN (Baltimore)

PITCHING MATCHUP: White Sox RH Dylan Axelrod (1-2, 5.63 ERA) vs. Orioles LH Joe Saunders (0-0, -.--)

Axelrod was recalled to take the spot of Gavin Floyd (elbow), who was placed on the disabled list on Monday. Axelrod has made six starts among 10 appearances in various stints for Chicago this season, last making a start at Boston on July 16, when he allowed one run and seven hits over 6 2/3 innings in a no-decision. The 27-year-old owns a 1-2 record with a 4.99 ERA in nine career starts.

Saunders is another player getting a chance for Baltimore. The Orioles acquired the veteran left-hander from Arizona over the weekend. Saunders went 6-10 with a 4.22 ERA in 21 starts for the Diamondbacks but was knocked around for 14 runs and 19 hits in 9 2/3 innings during his last two turns. The Virginia native has plenty of experience in the AL after beginning his career with the Los Angeles Angels and is 4-3 with a 3.63 ERA in eight career starts against Chicago.

Wednesday's betting tips: Twins' HR drought good for unders

Weather watch

Hurricane Isaac has forced Texas A&M and Louisiana Tech to reschedule their season-opening contest in Shreveport, La. Thursday. The game has been pushed to Oct. 13. The Aggies were 7-point road faves.

Who’s hot?

Minnesota Lynx – Since returning from the Olympic break, the WNBA’s top team has gone 5-0 SU and ATS. Minnesota most recently defeated the San Antonio Silver Stars 96-84 in overtime as a 7.5-point home favorite Tuesday. The Lynx are 20-4 SU and 14-10 ATS on the year.

Who’s not?

Washington Nationals – The Nats are stumbling into September with five straight losses heading into Wednesday. Washington lost 9-0 to Miami Tuesday and has be outscored 26-6 during this five-game slide.

Key stat

1 – The Minnesota Twins have just one home run in their last 11 games, coming from first baseman Justin Morneau Saturday. The Twins, which rank 25th in dingers (108), have gone 4-7 over/under in that span.

Game of the day

Chicago White Sox at Baltimore Orioles

Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

St. Louis Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina was injured in a collision at home plate against the Pirates Tuesday. While X-rays and a SCAT II concussion test showed no serious damage, the All-Star backstop will need time to recover. Tony Cruz is stepping in behind home plate while minor league catcher Bryan Anderson was called up.

Notable quotable

“I’m not worried about it at all because I have good teammates, and they’ll get me ready for going against the defense. As far as conditioning-wise, we have two weeks to the game. I’ve been working out, I’ve been doing really good conditioning, so that’s not really going to be a problem.” – Pittsburgh Steelers WR Mike Wallace on catching up on conditioning after putting an end to his preseason holdout.

Betting news and notes

-- Los Angeles Dodgers star outfielder Matt Kemp is not expected to play versus the Rockies Wednesday after injuring his jaw and knee while colliding with the outfield wall at Coors Field Tuesday. The Dodgers are -130 road favorites.

-- Redskins backup pivot Kirk Cousins will start at QB in place of rookie sensation Robert Griffin III versus Tampa Bay in the team’s final preseason game. Though head coach Mike Shanahan won’t say for how long, Cousins said on Monday he’ll be in for about a half. Washington is a 4-point favorite.

-- The Tigers have won or split their past five series in Kansas City dating to June 4-6, 2010, when the Royals took two of three. Detroit lost the series opener to Kansas City and is a -133 road favorite Wednesday.

-- Toronto slugger Jose Bautista is done for the season and will undergo wrist surgery next week. The Blue Jays are 12-24 without Bautista in the lineup this season, losing -6.94 units. Toronto is a +224 home pup in Yankee Stadium Wednesday.

-- Vanderbilt has been pegged as a live dog in its season opener against South Carolina Thursday. However, the Commodores, who are 6.5-point home underdogs, are having trouble filling their 40,000-seat Stadium for Week 1 – even with the South Carolina allotment.

Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

Some origins of the fast food industry........

-- 7-11 was first opened in Dallas, in 1927 by Jefferson Green. It was open 16 hours a day, seven days a week, a lot back then.

-- First McDonald’s was opened in San Bernadino by Dick/Mac MacDonald in 1940.

-- First Taco Bell was opened by Glen Bell in Downey, CA in 1961.

-- First In ‘n Out Burger (we need one here in Albany!!!) was opened in 1948 in Baldwin Park, CA by Harry/Esther Snyder.

-- First Sonic Drive-in was opened in Shawnee, OK in 1953, by Troy Smith.

-- First Pizza Hut opened in Wichita in 1958, by Frank/Dan Conner.

*********

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud.......

13) ESPN ponied up $5.6B (that’s billion with a B) to televise baseball for the next eight years; they’ll show 13% more games than before, but don’t expect to see Pirates or A’s, just more New York-Boston-Dodger games.

12) Had to do some research this week about how favorites of 6+ points do in Week 1 of NFL games. On surface, I didn’t find much—they’re 25-24 vs spread over the last decade, but if you break it down further, we find that favorites of 6+ points in divisional games are 7-11 vs spread—in non-divisional games, they’re 18-13, so there is some knowledge there.

11) Reds were treading water this season at 20-19 when they made Aroldis Chapman the closer (what took them so long?); since then, they’re 58-33.

10) How can a save be awarded in a game that is shortened by rain? You get a save by recording the 27th out, not by getting a non-dramatic out in a game that ends an hour or two later because its raining. This is a rule that needs to change.

9) Speaking of change, baseball really needs instant replay on everything but balls/strikes; too many plays are getting missed, especially bang/bang plays at first base. The NFL-like challenge system would work just fine.

8) Carolina Panthers open the season in Tampa; they’re spending all next week at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, because their stadium will be taken over by the Democratic National Convention. Panthers planned this out well in advance, so don’t think it’ll be a negative.

7) One thing that will be a negative will be when our greedy oil companies use Tropical Storm Isaac to jack up the price of gasoline; supposedly 12 gulf coast refineries are being shut down, so they’ll have an excuse to raise the price of gas/oil so their profits don’t go down. God forbid.

Gas went up four cents a gallon here today. Why? Because they can.

6) I’m no advertising executive, but how come no condom company has signed up Antonio Cromartie (12 kids by eight women in six different states) to be a spokesman? “Look at the money I could’ve saved if I had used condoms!!! You should use them!!!” Then they could show child support checks/tax returns as evidence. It would be effective advertising.

5) When Ohio U visits Penn State Saturday, the Bobcat QB will be Tyler Tettleton, whose dad Mickey was a pretty good major league catcher. Tyler has a shot to make the NFL, coming from a league that produced Roethlisberger-Leftwich-Pennington.

4) Redskins signed Billy Cundiff after the Ravens cut him. That kid whose been punting for the Raiders will get scooped up the minute Oakland cuts him, too as teams jockey to improve their special teams.

3) University of Tennessee athletic department lost $3.98M last year; some of that money is the athletic department paying rent to other parts of the school, so it’s the left hand feeding the right, but they also they paid out $37,285,629 to coaches/former coaches—that’s a lot of cabbage!!! Having a good football team erases a lot of red ink. Derek Dooley needs his Vols to be good this year. Or else.

2) Its been a while since a baseball team has been under the scrutiny during the offseason that the Red Sox will be under this winter. Consensus is they did well freeing up Beckett/Crawford money, but now how will they re-spend it? Doubtful their Opening Day first baseman next April will be Mauro Gomez.

1) There are stories in New York papers that New Jersey governor Chris Christie won’t run for Vice President because he is overweight; if this is true, and I sincerely hope it isn’t, what has this country come to? This isn’t America’s Top Model, its one of the most important positions in the whole freakin’ world, one step from being the most powerful person on the planet!!! If he’s a good candidate, he needs to run, haven’t been enough of those running lately.
