i have this problem as well...took ambien but my wife said i would say very weird things and would forgot what we would talk about the night before....kinda nice bc i had a built in excuse but not very good for the marriage...

I was prescribed ambien and hated it. Stopped taking it and was okay for a few years until the sleep issues came back and was subsequently given lorazepam, which has been very effective. I don't take it often - last night was the first night in a few months, but it's nice to have in the drawer on those bad nights.
If you don't have your meds yet go out and buy your favorite 100-proof liquor. Take 2 shots straight up and go to bed. Think relaxing thoughts like a bubbling brook or birds chirping.
In the last 20 years this has never, ever failed to put me out.
