White Sox In Motown To Battle The Tigers

Forgive us this current analogy, but the AL Central race has been about as slow-moving over the past month as Hurricane Isaac was off of the Gulf Coast earlier this week. With the White Sox and Tigers apparently in suspended animation, perhaps this weekend’s set at Comerica Park will lend a bit more definition to a division race that has been mostly on hold since the All-Star break.

Indeed, the Central turned into a two-team race in July when Cleveland dropped off the pace, leaving the Chisox and Tigers to battle each other. Both also remain involved as possible American League wild card entrants as the calendar turns to September.

Beginning with this weekend’s game, Chicago and Detroit will meet seven times over the last five weeks of the season. The return engagement takes place at The Cell in mid-September when the Tigers invade the South Side for a critical four-game set commencing on September 10.

But it’s showdown time on Sunday night in Motown when the Pale Hose send fireballer Chris Sale to the mound to face Detroit’s reigning MVP and Cy Young Award winner Justin Verlander. First pitch at Comerica Park will be at 8:05 p.m. (ET) with the usual Sunday Night Baseball announcing crew of Dan Shulman, Terry Francona and Orel Hershier on hand for the ESPN2 telecast.

For Detroit, it was a mostly-maddening August as it could not mount a sufficient charge to overtake the Chisox, who provided the Tigers with several opportunities to close the gap atop the division. Chicago entered this weekend’s set holding a three-game edge in the Central, which in fact should come as a relief to Detroit after it was swept in a midweek three-game set at lowly Kansas City while the White Sox lost three of four at Baltimore. Which was merely another blown opportunity for the Tigers to make up some much-needed ground.

Perhaps hooking the Pale Hose at Comerica Park is the required tonic for Jim Leyland’s crew. Entering the weekend series, Detroit had won four straight and nine of the last 10 at home against Chicago, which has been held to 15 runs total when losing five of its last six at Comerica.

Playing away from friendly US Cellular Field has become an issue for the White Sox, who entered this weekend having lost six of their last seven on the road and batting just .212 in the process during that stretch. And while big 1B Adam Dunn lead the majors with 38 homers, his production had tailed off entering this series, just 5-for-32 (.152 BA) with two homers in his last nine games after the set in Baltimore concluded last Thursday.

The White Sox will turn tonight to flame-throwing lefty Chris Sale, whose emergence as a feared component in the rotation has been one of the key developments in Chicago’s ascent to the top of the Central. A pleasant surprise all season long for skipper Robin Venture and pitching guru Don Cooper, Sale has nonetheless wobbled a bit in recent outings that have not quite resembled his dominant efforts from earlier in the season.

The Chisox, who had won eight of Sale’s 10 starts through mid-July, have won only four of his last seven turns in the rotation since July 21. Moreover, Sale’s recent efforts on the road have been extremely shaky, with an ERA of 6.75 his last four starts away from The Cell, Chicago losing three of those games. One of those starts was July 21 at Comerica, when Sale was hit hard, allowing five runs and seven hits while walking four in seven innings of work in a 7-1 Chicago loss.

Sale also lost vs. the Tigers on April 15 at The Cell when allowing three runs and five hits over five innings in an eventual 5-2 defeat. Thus, in two starts this season vs. Detroit, Sale is an unimpressive 0-2 with a puffy ERA of 6.00.

Detroit counterpart Verlander, however, has not been that sharp lately, either, especially in his most-recent outing last Tuesday at Kansas City when allowing the Royals to batter him for eight runs and 12 hits over just 5 2/3 IP in an eventual 9-8 Tigers loss. Verlander has not flashed his usual dominance since a pair of early August starts; including the loss this past Tuesday at Kauffman Stadium, his ERA over the last three outings is an un-Verlander-like 5.75.

Verlander has fared decently in his career vs. the White Sox but hasn’t dominated them, either, recording a 13-10 mark and 4.05 ERA in 26 career starts. He did, however, keep Chicago in check in the one time he faced the Chisox earlier this season, limiting them to just two runs and four hits over eight innings of work in a 4-2 Detroit win at Comerica back on July 20.

Preview: White Sox (72-60) at Tigers (71-61)

Game: 3
Venue: Comerica Park
Date: September 02, 2012 8:05 PM EDT

Justin Verlander is the reigning AL Cy Young Award winner, and Chris Sale is considered a front-runner for this year's honor.

Both struggled to live up to that lofty status recently, but they have something more pressing than that individual award Sunday night.

Verlander looks to continue his dominance of the Chicago White Sox in order to pull the Detroit Tigers level with them atop the AL Central by completing a sweep of this three-game set.

Detroit (71-61) is trailing Chicago (72-60) by one game for the division lead after winning 5-1 Saturday following a 7-4 victory in Friday's series opener.

"We know we need to win games," manager Jim Leyland said. "I usually don't emphasize series. I did say this is a bigger series."

Verlander (12-7, 2.80 ERA) will bid for the sweep, which would give the Tigers seven straight home wins over the White Sox and 17 in the last 20 games between the teams at Comerica Park.

The venue hasn't mattered for Verlander, who is 11-1 with a 2.32 ERA in his last 12 starts against the Central rival. He beat them again at home July 20, yielding two runs and four hits in eight innings of a 4-2 victory.

This time, however, the reigning AL MVP will oppose Sale (15-5, 2.81) for the first time.

Sale has emerged as Chicago's ace this year as he attempts to become the first White Sox pitcher to win the Cy Young Award since Jack McDowell in 1993.

He's one victory shy of the AL lead held by Tampa Bay's David Price and Jered Weaver of Los Angeles, and they're also scheduled to pitch Sunday.

Sale, though, has lost both of his starts this year against the Tigers, allowing eight runs and 12 hits with 11 strikeouts and six walks in 12 innings.

While Sale and Verlander are among the league's best pitchers, both had issues in their last appearance.

Sale gave up four runs with five strikeouts and three walks in four innings of a 6-0 loss at Baltimore on Tuesday. Verlander wasn't any better in a 9-8 loss at Kansas City on the same day, getting tagged for a career high-tying eight earned runs and 12 hits in 5 2-3 innings while not getting a decision.

Perhaps a home start can help Verlander rebound. He's 4-0 with a 1.72 ERA and 48 strikeouts in 47 innings over his last six starts there, including his most recent with Chicago.

The Tigers have also won 24 of 30 at home, where Miguel Cabrera has been a spark at the plate batting .366 with 11 homers and 27 RBIs in that stretch.

The third baseman has six hits with one double, one homer and four RBIs in this series as he continues to pound the White Sox at Comerica. He has a .469 average with three homers and eight RBIs in helping Detroit win seven of eight there against them this year.

Cabrera, however, is 1 for 10 versus Sale.

It's unclear if the White Sox will have Adam Dunn back after he sat out Saturday's loss with a strained oblique. The slugger leads the majors with 38 homers while driving in 88 runs, getting three and seven, respectively, in 12 meetings with the Tigers.

Two of his three hits in 20 at_bats versus Verlander have been home runs.

Chicago is concluding a seven-game road trip, trying to win for just the second time. Still, manager Robin Ventura isn't ready to panic.

"There's a long way to go. You're still where you want to be," Ventura said. "No use hanging your head. Still a lot worse places you could be."

Verlander looks to complete sweep of White Sox

CHICAGO WHITE SOX (72-60)

at DETROIT TIGERS (71-61)

First pitch: Sunday, 8:05 p.m. EDT
Line: Detroit -160, Chicago +150, Total: 7

Two of the best pitchers in the American League square off in a key division matchup on Sunday night when Chicago’s Chris Sale duels with Detroit’s Justin Verlander.

The White Sox are just 1-5 on their current road trip, which has shrunk their AL Central lead to just one game over the Tigers, who are 7-4 in their past 11 contests. Although Sale has been outstanding this season with a 2.81 ERA (4th in AL), he has been rocked in both outings versus Detroit, allowing eight runs and 18 base-runners (12 H, 6 BB) in just 12 innings. On the flip side, Verlander’s 2.80 ERA is actually a tad better than Sale, and he is an amazing 11-1 with a 2.32 ERA in 12 starts versus his division rival since 2009. This includes a 1.21 ERA and 0.99 WHIP in his past three outings against the White Sox, a span in which Detroit outscored the Sox 17-3. With Saturday’s 5-1 defeat, Chicago has now dropped six straight meetings in this series and is 3-16 in the past 19 games at Comerica Park. Considering Verlander is 45-11 (.804) as a favorite of -150 in the past three seasons, the pick here is DETROIT to complete the sweep on Sunday.

This four-star FoxSheets trend also supports the Tigers:

Play On - Home teams (DETROIT) - with a starting pitcher whose WHIP is 1.100 or better on the season-AL against opponent with a starting pitcher whose WHIP is 1.200 or better on the season-AL. (71-25 over the last 5 seasons.) (74%, +42.5 units. Rating = 4*).

Sale (15-5, 2.81 ERA, 1.06 WHIP) has been phenomenal in his first season in the starting rotation, as he looks to tie David Price and Jered Weaver for the AL lead in wins. But Sale has been hit hard in his past four road starts, going 1-3 with a 6.75 ERA and 1.71 WHIP, walking 13 batters in 24 innings. This rough stretch began in Detroit, when he allowed five runs and 11 base-runners (7 H, 4 BB) in seven innings of work in a 7-1 defeat. Sale averages 6.8 innings per start this year, and he’ll need to go deep in this one too with a weak bullpen behind him sporting a 3.78 ERA and 17 blown saves this year. Sale does not figure to get much run support against Verlander, especially with slugger Adam Dunn questionable to play because of an oblique injury. Dunn, who sat out of Saturday’s loss, leads the majors with 38 home runs, with three of those coming against Detroit.

Verlander (12-7, 2.80 ERA, 1.04 WHIP) has been dominant in his home park this year, going 6-2 with a 1.75 ERA, 0.92 WHIP and 93 K’s in 93.2 innings. The Tigers are 9-3 in these dozen home starts, and Verlander hasn’t lost at Comerica since June 3. Verlander is eager to get back on the mound after he was shelled in his last outing, allowing eight runs on 12 hits in just 5.2 innings at Kansas City. Verlander is a true workhorse, averaging 7.3 innings per start overall and 7.7 innings per start at home. He’ll look to go deep again, especially with Detroit’s mediocre bullpen (3.64 ERA, 1.28 WHIP). However, Tigers relievers have been pretty strong at home with a 3.19 ERA and 1.21 WHIP. That’s a big reason why Detroit is 24-6 (.800) in its past 30 home games.

Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

-- Max Scherzer won his fifth start in row, as Detroit pulled within a game of the White Sox in the AL Central.

-- Cardinals had scored total of one run in losing their last four games, but they pulled out a 10-9 win at Washington Saturday.

-- With Houston trading Ben Francisco to Tampa Bay, it bears noting that Alex Rodriguez makes $10M a year more than the whole Astro team.

-- Oakland A's won their last eight games, winning last five by a combined score of 54-7. Too bad they've lost Brandon Inge for the year.

-- A's have used 17 different rookies this season, 11 of whom are pitchers.

-- Rays won 5-4 in Toronto, second game in row game ended with tying run getting thrown out at home. Big win for the Rays.

Who’s hot?

Rookie phenom Bryce Harper has collected three homers, eight RBIs and six runs scored during his stretch of four multi-hit games for the Nationals.

Who’s not?

After getting pounded 20-2 by the A’s on Friday, the Red Sox committed a pair of errors and looked sloppy in a 7-1 loss on Saturday. Boston has lost five consecutive games.

Key stat

Diamondbacks starter Wade Miley remains in the discussion for NL Rookie of the Year. The lefty has allowed three runs or fewer in 18 of his 23 starts this
season and has a 1.71 ERA over his last three outings. He toes the rubber in Los Angeles on Sunday.

Game of the day

- The Cubs are 11-3 against NL West teams at Wrigley Field, but 0-13 on the road. They host the Giants on Sunday.

Sunday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

STREAKING

Mark Buehrle, Miami Marlins (12-11, 3.62)

Buehrle allowed just one run on six hits over 5 2/3 innings against the Dodgers on Sunday. The lefty is now 3-0 with a 2.29 ERA over his last three starts. He is one victory away from posting his fourth consecutive 13-win season and will take on the Mets next.

Bronson Arroyo, Cincinnati Reds (11-7, 3.84)

Arroyo held the Diamondbacks to two runs over six innings Monday night and also hit the game-winning home run. The right-hander has won four straight decisions and takes the hill against the lowly Astros next.

SLUMPING

Ricky Romero, Toronto Blue Jays (8-12, 5.50 ERA)

Romero only surrendered two runs on five hits over seven innings, but took the loss in a 2-1 decision against the Yankees on Tuesday night. The lefty has taken the loss in 11 of his last 12 starts and hasn’t picked up a win since June 22. He gets the Rays at Rogers Centre in his next start.

Chris Capuano, Los Angeles Dodgers (11-10, 3.58)

Capuano gave up six earned runs on 10 hits over six innings to the Rockies in his last start. The left-hander continues to struggle, giving up six runs for the second-straight outing. He takes the hill at home against the Diamondbacks on Sunday.

Sunday Night Baseball: White Sox at Tigers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Two of the best pitchers in the AL Central are set to do battle on Sunday Night Baseball as the Tigers host the White Sox.

WINS FOR SALE

Moving Chris Sale to the rotation has paid major dividends for the White Sox and bettors this season. The lefty is 15-5 with a 2.81 ERA while striking out 155 batters this campaign. However, Sale is 0-2 against Detroit this season. His last start against the Tigers came back on July 21, when he gave up five runs and seven hits in seven innings. Sale has given up four runs or more in four straight road starts and in five of his last seven starts overall. One of Sale's strengths is his ability to get big strikeouts when he needs to; he has five strikeouts or more in seven straight games.

ACE STRUGGLES

Justin Verlander is the undisputed Tigers’ ace. He has gone four straight starts with no-decisions despite throwing at least 110 pitches in each contest. The right-hander was rocked by the Royals his last time out, surrendering eight runs and 12 hits in just over five innings. Verlander's only start against Chicago this season was back on July 20, when he gave up two runs and four hits in eight innings. Ironically, that was the last time he picked up a win.

INJURY REPORT

The White Sox and Tigers are two of the healthier teams in baseball. Chicago is without Gavin Floyd and John Danks, who are both on the disabled list. Francisco Liriano and Orlando Hudson are also dealing with ailments, but they are both playing through them with Hudson recently coming off the DL. The Tigers continue to deal with the loss of Victor Martinez, who hurt his ACL in the off-season. Other than Martinez, Detroit has a clean bill of health.

TRENDS

*White Sox are 12-5 in Sale’s last 17 starts
*Under is 5-1-1 in Chicago’s last seven Sunday games
*Tigers are 28-6 in Verlander’s last 34 Sunday starts
*Tigers are 43-14 in their last 57 Sunday games

HITTERS TO WATCH

Miguel Cabrera is 1-for-10 vs. Sale
Prince Fielder is 1-for-7 vs. Sale
Adam Dunn is 3-for-20 vs. Verlander
