So, my cat Marcus is pretty screwed... He lost, what seemed like a bit of weight, and yesterday started puking all over the place... Not eating, and barely drinking. Took him to the Vet today, and it looks like his liver is completely shot. They gave me an estimate of $1400-$1800, so I gave them a $500 deposit and told them to do whatever they can...

Get a call later today, telling me how fucked my cat really is, essentially just listed how far off his stats are than they should be (most were off by factors of ten or so). Guy says they want to do an MRI and biopsy tomorrow... Which will cost another grand, or so.

I can this, and I will, cause I love the fat fuck,,, But if they do all these tests, just to tell me he´s going to die in days/weeks, I´m going to be pretty pissed. I´ll just pay them for pain killers, take Marcus home, and let him live it out high as a kite. Fuck. What would the pet-owners here do?

sure it is not an ultrasound they want to do.my wife said his liver function could be due to his gallbladder needs removed.she said that is a common reason. wish em well.

Celtic we've butted heads on a few topics on the forum in the past, but in a situation like this bro do what you can to keep your family member around.

If you need any advice or want to chat shoot me a PM.
This is coming from a person who dislikes cats, but at the same time likes all animals.

Come on Marcus, get your surgery and pull through to your joyous old self

Thanks fellas. I know it's hard not to post some shit in here, especially given some of the stuff that I say on here. This has truly been the worst day, that I can remember. The worst part is, I know had I been more aware that I could have taken him to the vet weeks ago, but I thought I knew better... And I'm pretty sure that he won't understand, when I tell him how sorry I am.

You've got to let him go, man.

Sorry.
I'm with this. Family member maybe, but not a fellow human being here, sorry. Unless you have $$$ to burn, you have to view this on even keel and realize that you may pay $2K for each addtl year and should probably expect deterioration. Gloomy yes but it is what it is. FWIW, I've always been an animal/pet lover like 95% of population but you do have to be sensible and know that vets are the most optimistic types out there.

Tough thing to go though. I've been there a few times. The last about 2 years ago.
Just about the same. Losing weight, throwing up, etc. Spent $150 a pop twice in one week , then about $1000 doing all kinds of tests.
Plus the throw up meds.

Bottom line it was the C word. Went from 22lbs. Down to 12.
Kept on bringing him to the vet. Tried everything. But in the end it just wasn't enough.
I just let him play it out until it got to the point where he started to suffer. And put him down.

It's by far the harder thing I had to do. Both myself and the wife were a mess.

I hope your buddy doesn't have to go through it, and things work out.

As long as you trust your Vet, they will tell you the truth.

nothing lives forever.

when it's time to go it's time to go.

don't spend your money on trying to extend your pets life a few more weeks or months unless you know it will be pain free for them.

it's hard but when they start to suffer do the right thing.

pets will love you no matter how sick they get, don't mistake that as them telling you that their suffering isn't that bad.

if this is something your cat can recover from, and you can afford it, then you should do it.

sometimes running expensive tests can be like scratching instant lottery tickets... if that's not what you want to do then talk to your vet to make sure you're not looking for false hope.

hang in there and good luck

If the cat is suffering, not eating, losing control of its bowels, fur is oily/greasy-looking, its time to put it down. i would take it to another vet and get a 2nd opinion. Try giving it some catnip and see if responds to that.

Feel your pain man. My 16 yr old boston terrier starting losing weight and vomiting last december, and a week later and $3000 lighter in wallet we decided to put him down. They never were able to telling us what was wrong. Vets are in business of selling services, and using the emotional attachment of your pet makes it very easy. The most unselfish thing you can do is ease their suffering. Good luck.

I went through this earlier this year, and it cost me more than that. It is the most brutal thing to go through. Tell them to pull the plug now (if you know it is hopeless). It is unbearable at the very end, and the money just makes things worse. They can give the cat a shot and he won't feel pain. It will be tough to deal with for a while, but you will eventually get to a better place.

You are going to have to fight through the pain, though. Just do it honorably and time will make it better.

Heard from the vet just now... Essentially, he´s not in pain (or so they say) and he´s still been fairly active/alert, but he won´t eat. They tried watering food down and using an oral syringe, but he just puked it up. They´ve given him an IV to get hydrated. They could put in a feeding tube, which, would obviously cost more money, and may not even work. The vet thinks it is too early to pull the plug, given his alertness and lack of distress/pain.

Think I´ll bring him home, try to administer whatever drugs they give me, and hope I can get him to eat... Find out when the vet thinks the plug should be pulled, and wait. Thoughts?
