Tampa Bay Rays Duel With Darvish & Rangers

UPDATE: Tampa Bay has made a late change to its rotation and will start rookie Chris Archer on Saturday in place of David Price.

The Texas Rangers can look forward to their third straight trip to the playoffs.

The Tampa Bay Rays might get to the postseason for a third consecutive year as well, although their prospects are much less certain.

So, the situations for these two contenders are very much different as they clash in a crucial weekend set in St. Petersburg, with the Rangers beginning to calculate their magic number while the Rays are desperate to collar the Yankees or Orioles, or both, in the AL East.

Down the road in October could also be a third consecutive playoff matchup between these sides, but let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves.

What we do know is that Texas and Tampa Bay will play the middle matchup of a three-game weekend set at Tropicana Field on Saturday, featuring a tantalizing pitching clash between fireballers Yu Darvish (Rangers) and David Price (Rays).

First pitch for the Saturday night showdown is slated for 7:10 p.m. (ET). Odds have yet to be posted with a late pitching change for Tampa Bay.

For the Rangers, they entered this weekend set on the heels of an 11-4 run in their last 15 games that thrust them 5½ games ahead of the suddenly-wobbling A’s in the AL West. Not only is Texas zeroing in on another division title, but the Rangers also entered the weekend in the lead for best record in the league and home-field edge in the Division Round and ALCS.

Not much was decided in two previous series between these teams this season, each winning three of the six meetings. All of those clashes, however, were in Arlington, where Texas won two of three vs. Tampa Bay in their last series encounter in late August.

Recent efforts also suggest the Rangers’ towering Japanese righthander Darvish has found a nice rhythm, as after much inconsistency for the first four months of the season has been flashing dominant form lately. Darvish has allowed only 18 hits over 27 2/3 IP in his last four starts while posting a 2.93 ERA that span. He’s also struck out 53 batters over his last five starts and kept the Rays in check on August 28 at Arlington, blanking them over seven frames while allowing just six hits and striking out 10 in a 1-0 Texas win.

Josh Hamilton's recent success at the plate may give Darvish room for error. Entering the weekend, he was hitting .346 with five homers, 14 RBIs and seven walks in his last 14 games, as half of his six hits over the past five have been homers.

But it’s worth noting how past results indicate Hamilton hasn't come close to being that productive at The Trop, batting .167 with one homer and 12 RBIs in 20 career games in St. Pete.

Adrian Beltre, however, has a .341 average with six homers and 17 RBIs over his last 22 visits to Tropicana Field. That includes the Rangers' last visit in Game 4 to clinch of last October’s ALDS, as Beltre connected for three homers, two of those off Friday’s Tampa Bay starter Jeremy Hellickson.

Beltre also enters this series as one of the AL’s hottest hitters the past few weeks, batting .443 with 11 homers and 21 RBIs in his last 15 games.

Meanwhile, the Rays will take their chances with star lefty starter Price, who has been nothing short of spectacular in this 2012 campaign with a 17-5 record. He’s been even tougher to hit at The Trop, where he sports a microscopic 1.66 ERA in 12 starts this season.

On the negative side, however, Price has not fared well in the past vs. Texas, as the ex-Vanderbilt portsider has had his problems vs. the Rangers, winning only one of eight career starts while posting a hefty 5.98 in those games. Included was a recent shellacking (Price’s only subpar effort sine the All-Star break) on August 27 at Arlington when allowing six runs and 10 hits in just four innings of work in an eventual 6-5 Texas win.

As for the Rays, losers of seven of 12 entering the weekend, every series is crucial these days, as they began the weekend 1½ games behind both the Yankees and A’s in the East, and also involved with the A’s, Angels, White Sox and Tigers in the chase for the two wild card berths. This series vs. the Rangers begins a crucial 10-day stretch in which Tampa Bay will also be facing Baltimore and the Yankees in the next week.

Preview: Tigers (73-64) at Angels (75-63)

Game: 2
Venue: Angel Stadium of Anaheim
Date: September 08, 2012 9:05 PM EDT

The Los Angeles Angels are uncertain how long they'll be without their staff ace. With the way they've been playing lately, though, it might not matter.

The surging Angels look to win their fifth in a row Saturday night against the Detroit Tigers, who give the ball to their ace, Justin Verlander.

Los Angeles (75-63) took Friday's opener 3-2 as pinch-hitter Alberto Callaspo drove home Peter Bourjos with a two-out single in the ninth inning. The Angels won for the ninth time in 10 games and improved to 13-3 since Aug. 21 to pull within two games of Baltimore for the AL's second wild-card spot and one game back of Tampa Bay.

"We're just playing together, trying to do all the little things,' Callaspo said. "We'll keep playing together and see what happens in the end.'

They might have to play without Jered Weaver for a while.

Weaver was originally slated to start the opener, but the Angels announced Thursday they would skip his turn because of biceps tendinitis.

Prior to Friday's contest, the 16-game winner admitted he can't throw his slider or fastball without pain. It is uncertain when he will pitch again, but he insists he'll return before the end of the season.

"It just all depends on how it responds,' he said. "You'd like to just skip the one start, and (see) signs it was getting better. There's no timetable."

Weaver's teammates will likely have their hands full in facing Verlander (13-7, 2.73 ERA), but the way they overcame a stellar outing from Max Scherzer to win Friday should be a confidence booster. Scherzer allowed five hits while striking out nine through eight innings.

The Tigers (73-64), whose best chance to make the playoffs is to win the AL Central, wasted a chance to pull into a first-place tie with Chicago and are one game back. They also are 3 1/2 games out of a wild card.

"We've got to go win games, simple as that," Jim Leyland said.

Giving the ball to Verlander would seem to give the Tigers a good shot at evening the series.

Verlander allowed a leadoff homer Sunday against Chicago, before settling down and giving up just three more hits the rest of the way. The right-hander struck out 11 in eight innings of a 4-2 victory, and in the process, achieved his fourth consecutive 200-strikeout season and sixth straight with 200 innings pitched.

"He wants to step up in the spotlight," catcher Gerald Laird told the Tigers' official website.

This is his first start against the Angels since July 31, 2011, when he took a no-hitter into the eighth inning. He has a 1.74 ERA in his last four starts in the series.

Los Angeles counters with C.J. Wilson (11-9, 3.85), who slowly seems to be regaining his form following an 11-start winless stretch.

Wilson has won back-to-back starts after posting an 8.78 ERA in his previous five. The left-hander gave up two runs in five innings in Monday's 8-3 victory over Oakland while dealing with a blister.

He struggled mightily in his lone start against the Tigers this season on July 18, permitting seven runs, eight hits and five walks in six innings of a 7-2 loss, and will have to be careful facing Prince Fielder.

The slugger hit his 25th homer Friday, and is batting .419 with three home runs, five doubles and six RBIs in his last 12 games. He is also 13 for 26 with two homers and six RBIs in eight games against the Angels this season, and 3 for 5 lifetime against Wilson.

Preview: Dodgers (73-66) at Giants (78-60)

Game: 2
Venue: AT&T Park
Date: September 08, 2012 4:05 PM EDT

The San Francisco Giants are trying to continue padding their lead atop the NL West by capitalizing on a series with the sliding Los Angeles Dodgers.

Giving the ball to Matt Cain may be just what the need as he looks to continue his success against his archrivals Saturday.

San Francisco (78-60) leads the division by 5 1/2 games over second-place Los Angeles (73-66), which is tied with Pittsburgh 1 1/2 games behind St. Louis for the NL's second wild-card spot.

"Ultimately we want to win the division but sometimes it is necessary to look outside the bubble," the Dodgers' Shane Victorino said. "The goal? It's about getting there. The first is to win the division."

The Giants took a step towards a second West title in three years by opening this three-game series with a 5-2 win Friday. San Francisco has won four in a row against Los Angeles since being swept in a three-game home set from July 27-29.

Cain (13-5, 2.98 ERA) looks to keep the Giants rolling, and he's 4-0 with a 2.02 ERA in seven starts versus the Dodgers, holding them to one or no runs in each of those victories. The most recent one came Aug. 22, when the right-hander yielded one run and seven hits in seven innings.

He's entering this meeting with a 3-0 record and 2.86 ERA in five games, all of them San Francisco victories. However, he struggled in his latest outing Sunday, giving up five runs with six strikeouts in five innings while not getting a decision in a 7-5 win at Chicago.

Marco Scutaro continues to make a major impact since being acquired from Colorado. He's batting .331 in 39 games since the deal and is 9 for 20 with four RBIs in four games after getting two hits and driving in two runs Friday.

"We needed somebody to come through for us and he has done that since he came over here, and really his whole career," manager Bruce Bochy said.

Scutaro is 10 for 24 in six meetings with the Giants versus the Dodgers, and he's a career .351 hitter in 25 games against them. He's also 4 for 8 against Saturday's scheduled starter - Chris Capuano.

Angel Pagan is hitting .341 with 22 runs over the past 20 games after collecting three hits and an RBI Friday. The center fielder is 10 for 17 while scoring seven times during the Giants' four-game winning streak against Los Angeles.

The Dodgers are on the verge of their first four-game skid since July 14-17, and Capuano (11-10, 3.63) is 0-4 with a 5.32 ERA in five games - three starts - at San Francisco.

The left-hander's only win in 11 games - seven starts - against the Giants came with Milwaukee in 2005, and he's 0-4 with a 6.75 ERA in four starts and seven games since.

Capuano was battered by them in losing to Cain last month, surrendering six runs and six hits in five innings of an 8-4 home defeat. That performance is part of a four-game stretch during which he's going 0-2 with a 6.94 ERA.

That win drought continued Sunday, when he allowed three runs and four hits - two homers - in five innings before Adrian Gonzalez's two-run, walkoff double gave the Dodgers a 5-4 win over Arizona.

Adrian Gonzalez will try to rebound from his 0-for-4 performance Friday after collecting seven hits with three doubles and four RBIs over the previous four games.

The first baseman is hitting .321 with four homers versus Cain.

Verlander tries to stop streaking Angels Saturday

DETROIT TIGERS (73-64)

at LOS ANGELES ANGELS (75-63)

First pitch: Saturday, 9:05 p.m. EDT
Line: Detroit -140, Los Angeles +130, Total: 7

The sizzling-hot Angels look for a fifth straight victory on Saturday night, but it won’t be easy to score runs against Detroit’s reigning Cy Young Award winner, Justin Verlander.

Los Angeles took the opener of the series 3-2, marking its ninth win in the past 10 games. Verlander is in the midst of another excellent season with a 2.73 ERA (5th-best in majors) and 209 strikeouts, the second-most in the majors. The Angels counter with lefty C.J. Wilson, who has won two straight decisions, but has really struggled since the start of August, sporting a hefty 7.41 ERA and 1.81 WHIP in these seven starts. And speaking of struggling, Wilson has been lit up in his four career starts versus Detroit, carrying a 7.33 ERA and 1.89 WHIP. Considering how well the Tigers have played against winning teams in the second half of the season since 2011 (45-27, .625), the pick here is Verlander and DETROIT to halt L.A.’s win streak.

This three-star FoxSheets trend also sides with the Tigers:

Play Against - All underdogs with a money line of +125 to +175 (L.A. ANGELS) - with a starting pitcher whose ERA is 4.20 or better on the season (AL), with a hot bullpen whose ERA is under 1.50 the last 5 games. (77-26 over the last 5 seasons.) (74.8%, +38.3 units. Rating = 3*).

Verlander (13-7, 2.73 ERA, 1.03 WHIP) has led the Tigers to a 17-11 record, but that mark is subpar 7-8 on the road, where he has been much more hittable with a 3.73 ERA and 1.16 WHIP. His last road start was atrocious, as Kansas City rocked Verlander for eight runs on 12 hits in 5.2 innings on Aug. 28. Although Verlander’s career numbers versus the Angels are mediocre (4-4, 3.68 ERA, 1.28 WHIP), he dominated them in his past two starts, both in 2011. In those 15.2 innings, Verlander allowed just three runs (1 ER) on eight hits, striking out 17 and walking four. In the most recent outing against L.A., he took a no-hitter into the eighth inning. Considering how poorly the Tigers relievers have pitched on the road this year (5-12, 4.29 ERA, 1.38 WHIP), Verlander knows he needs to pitch at least his season average of 7.3 innings per start.

Wilson (11-9, 3.85 ERA, 1.34 WHIP) has led his team to three straight victories, but the Angels were 1-8 in his previous nine starts. Wilson’s command was awful the last time he faced the Tigers on July 18, as he allowed seven runs on eight hits and five walks in six innings of a 7-2 defeat. Wilson has not completed seven innings in any of his past 10 starts, but the Angels bullpen has been terrific at home this year, sporting a 2.65 ERA and 1.18 WHIP to go along with an 8-4 record and 74% save percentage (14-of-19).

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Saturday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Streaking

Kris Medlen, Atlanta Braves (7-1, 1.56 ERA)

The Braves' starter has won five in a row and is 6-0 in his last seven starts going back to July 31. Medlen hasn’t allowed an earned run in his last 33 innings of work including two complete games. He has 34 strikeouts in that span.

Cole Hamels, Philadelphia Phillies (14-6, 3.04 ERA)

Hamels hasn’t tasted defeat since August 2, going 3-0 in his last five starts. He’s had to settled for back-to-back no-decisions in his last two outings but has allowed only nine total earned runs in that five-game span. The southpaw is 3-1 with a 3.48 ERA lifetime versus the Rockies.

Slumping

Chris Capuano, Los Angeles Dodgers (11-10, 3.63 ERA)

Capuano is flirting with a .500 record heading into the weekend. The Dodgers' lefty has lost six of his last 10 starts and has just two wins to show for in that span. He’s gone 0-2 in his last three, boasting a bulky 8.44 ERA in those outings.

Zach McAllister, Cleveland Indians (5-6, 4.26 ERA)

Indians pitchers have been mainstays in the “Slumping” section since the All-Star break and McAllister is no exception. The Tribe’s right-hander is winless in his last four trips to the bump including back-to-back losses heading into the weekend. Add to that a dismal record versus the Twins – Saturday’s opponent. He’s 0-1 with an ERA north of 10.00 versus Minnesota this season
