Prisco's playoff projections: Week 1

By Pete Prisco | Senior NFL Columnist

The Packers had a disappointing Week 1, but they're a good bet over the long haul. (US Presswire) Editor's note: After each week of the NFL regular season, Pete Prisco will update his predictions for which teams will make the playoffs, ranked in order by seed.
Prisco's playoff projections: Week 1

AFC

1. New England Patriots (East champion)
2. Denver Broncos (West champion)
3. Houston Texans (South champion)
4. Baltimore Ravens (North champion)
5. Pittsburgh Steelers (wild card No. 1)
6. San Diego Chargers (wild card No. 2)

NFC

1. Green Bay Packers (North champion)
2. Atlanta Falcons (South champion)
3. San Francisco 49ers (West champion)
4. Dallas Cowboys (East champion)
5. New York Giants (wild card No. 1)
6. Chicago Bears (wild card No. 2)

This is our first installment of my playoff projections, and I can hear the complaining already.

What the heck are the Packers doing in the top spot? Did I see them lose at home to the 49ers?

Yes, I did. But I think the Packers are still the team to beat in the NFC. The 49ers beat them in part because Green Bay's defense is still a work in progress. On Sunday, the 49ers were better.

I just don't think they are for the long haul.

In the AFC, the Patriots remain the team to beat. Two things from their victory over the Titans Sunday might make that even more of a solid projection. They ran it with Stevan Ridley and they got some pressure on the quarterback.

Packers and Patriots are at the top.

Sorry, 49ers fans.

I hate Prisco. He's arrogant and as stubborn as they come.

He's a know-it-all, smug, sawed off douche bag! He used to write for the Jacksonville paper and had a local radio show....the Jaguars come to town and all of sudden he's an NFL expert.

I don't read his non-sense...

Prisco's playoff projections: Week 2

Editor's note: After each week of the NFL regular season, Pete Prisco will update his predictions for which teams will make the playoffs, ranked in order by seed.

Prisco's playoff projections: Week 2

AFC

1. Houston Texans (South champion)
2. New England Patriots (East champion)
3. San Diego Chargers (West champion)
4. Baltimore Ravens (North champion)
5. Denver Broncos (wild card No. 1)
6. Pittsburgh Steelers (wild card No. 2)

NFC

1. San Francisco (West champion)
2. Atlanta (South champion)
3. Green Bay (North champion)
4. New York Giants (East champion)
5. Philadelphia Eagles (wild card No. 1)
6. Arizona Cardinals (wild card No. 2)

Wait a second? The Arizona Cardinals in the playoffs?

Yes, for now. They are 2-0 and have a tissue-paper soft schedule the next five weeks. If they can get by the Eagles this week, they have a real chance to start 5-1 or even 6-0.

It's the defense that makes them a playoff contender. If they can ever get the offense cranked up, who knows? Cardinals in the playoffs? Wow.

The Bolts are the biggest 'guess' here because their two wins against poor teams (Raiders & Titans) could literally mean they're the best of a bad bunch in the AFC WEst.

Could also mean they're a legit threat, we'll know for sure when they play Atlanta on Sunday.

If I had to guess as of right now, I'd say Houston have a better chance at a run than San Diego, but as you say, we'll know more Sunday.

Week 4 playoff picture projections

Editor's note: After each week of the NFL regular season, Pete Prisco will update his predictions for which teams will make the playoffs, ranked in order by seed.

Playoff picture projections: Week 4

AFC

1. Houston Texans (South champion)
2. New England Patriots (East champion)
3. Cincinnati Bengals (North champion)
4. Denver Broncos (West champion)
5. Baltimore Ravens (wild card No. 1)
6. Pittsburgh Steelers (wild card No. 2)

NFC

1. Atlanta Falcons (South champion)
2. Chicago Bears (North champion)
3. Philadelphia Eagles (East champion)
4. Arizona Cardinals (West champion)
5. San Francisco 49ers (wild card No. 1)
6. Green Bay Packers (wild card No. 2)

The way the Chicago Bears are playing on defense, it's hard to imagine they won't push the Packers for the division title.
That defense is nasty. That's why I moved them way up this week.

Jay Cutler to Brandon Marshall is scary good when he gets protected.
Which teams would be in if the playoffs started today? Who else is in the hunt? Check out our updated NFL playoff picture.

Week 5 playoff picture projections

Playoff picture projections: Week 5

AFC

1. Houston Texans (South champion)
2. New England Patriots (East champion)
3. Baltimore Ravens (North champion)
4. San Diego Chargers (West champion)
5. Pittsburgh Steelers (wild card No. 1)
6. Cincinnati Bengals (wild card No. 2)

NFC

1. Atlanta Falcons (South champion)
2. San Francisco 49ers (West champion)
3. Chicago Bears (North champion)
4. Philadelphia Eagles (East champion)
5. Green Bay Packers (wild card No. 1)
6. New York Giants (wild card No. 2)

Where are the Minnesota Vikings?

At 4-1, they should be in this picture, right? I just don't think it's sustainable.

The Packers are 2-3, and probably will go to 2-4 with a loss at Houston this week, but I still think they are the better team.

Arizona is 4-1, but they have major issues on their offensive line, which is why I kept them off the list.

The Seattle Seahawks are in the mix.

That comeback against the Patriots was impressive. Now Russell Wilson has to show he can get it done in a big road game this week at San Francisco.

If not, Seattle will be out next week.

I appreciate the effort to put this guys picks on here, but in all honesty I have followed him closely over the past few years, and he is absolutely awful. Word of advice, skip his weekly picks altogether to avoid him altering your opinion in any way. I learned the hard way.

Would the Steelers be able to hang in the playoff hunt with Byron Leftwich under center? (US Presswire)

I have the Steelers in the sixth spot. But if Ben Roethlisberger is out for any length of time, that could change.

The problem is this: There is nobody in the AFC to take that spot. Can Cincinnati get it going? The Jets? The Dolphins get back on track? San Diego? Who?

Can the NFL move an NFC team over to take that spot? Didn't think so.
