Last season, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Alex Smith enjoyed showing his support for the city’s baseball team by wearing a San Francisco Giants hat to some of his postgame press conferences. Although professional athletes didn’t necessarily grow up in the area where they are playing and have allegiances to other teams, fans like to see the symmetry — hence why Tom Brady heard so much grief over this wardrobe selection. However, the NFL has warned Smith that he will be fined $15,000 if he does it again.

According to the San Jose Mercury News, the NFL’s dress code mandates that players wear sponsored gear during the 90 minutes before and after games. Since a Giants hat is non-sponsored gear, Smith is not permitted to wear it.
“Yeah, can you call (Giants chief executive) Larry Baer for me?” Smith joked when reporters suggested that he ask the Giants to pay the fine.

Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com reports that the NFL actually did fine Smith $15,000 for wearing the hat last year but decided to rescind the fine and leave him with a warning. Smith also let reporters know that he is aware of the Giants’ magic number to clinch a playoff spot and didn’t sound like a man who intends to change his postgame wardrobe. And that, my friends, it what loyalty is all about. And wealth…

why exactly cant u relax in interviews after the game.. i mean most of us work for Coca Cola and then drink Pepsi at night also... its not as if he even did that.. he was supporting the same city he plays in.. least they could do is be more realistic about it.

If the players get a piece of the sponsorship money then I understand the fine, if the sponsorship money goes solely to the league and owners then the fine is stupid.

With the money he makes he should gladly wear that SF Giants hat at every postgame interview to prove a point.

Where does the fine money go?

Seriously the league needs to find better things to worry about. However they never will as with any company, the bottom line comes first!

Maybe all teams should wear caps like that, just to collect enough money in fines to pay the regular refs...seems ridiculous to even care about shit like that when you have games like the last MNF where refs aren't able to spot a ball correctly after a penalty, penalize teams for the wrong yardage, when flags (apparently for unsportsmanlike conduct vs the coach) get picked up without any penalty or explanation, when refs almost lose control over the game completely and bench players enter a scrum on the field and drives (and no huddle offenses) get stopped and their rhythm ruined because of constant delays...
Maybe they first should solve their REAL problems before they address nonsense like this or ever talk about anybody hurting the image and integrity of their beloved league again....

It's a business. The sponors pay good money to have their logo's displayed....and the players, owners, league officials, etc are required to comply. Regardless if the player gets money directly from a particular sponsor....the owner is getting the money...and thus paying the players salary w/ a portion of every dollar brought in regardless of where it comes from. It seems like a "silly" rule, but it's their for a reason: money.

How about a hat that says Roger Goodell on it? Have a whole bunch of players start doing this in a way to mock Mr. Goodell.

Just a few years ago Goodell was untouchable. His shine has worn off and has made a few bad decisions recently that seem to have tarnished his image. The guy did a pretty damn good job and got most of the players in check w/ the suspensions/discipline he implemented. The Saints scandal and now the ref issue have taken a toll on him....
