Police respond to hostage situation in downtown Pittsburgh
Updated at 10:56 a.m.:*Emergency crews, including a police SWAT team and special weapons and tactics officers, have responded to an apparent hostage situation on the 16th floor of Three Gateway Center in downtown Pittsburgh, according to local reports.*
Pittsburgh police said the man walked into the office building around 8:20 a.m. and claimed to have a gun and a bomb.
He has taken an unknown number of people hostage in the office of CW Breitsman Associates, LLC, a firm that helps administer insurance, retirement and pension plans.
"We have a black male that is holding two or possibly one person hostage," Pittsburgh police Chief Nate Harper told WPXI, adding that the suspect has a military background. "We are negotiating with that person right now. No one has been hurt at this time. There have been no shots fired at this time. The individual walked in to the investment office and started asking questions."
It is not clear if the man is an employee.*
The 16th floor has been placed on lockdown. There are conflicting reports as to whether the building has been evacuated.
Workers were seen walking away from the Gateway Center complex, which is a high-rise building complex with four buildings. Police were urging people to stay away from the scene. Bus routes in the area have been rerouted and the Fort Pitt Bridge is closed.*
There are no reports of injuries.*

Pittsburgh police Chief Nate Harper identified the suspect as 22-year-old Klein Michael Thaxton. On his Facebook page, Thaxton says he's tired of the life he's lived and has "lost everything."
Harper said Thaxton entered the 16th floor office of a benefits administration firm around 8 a.m. Friday asking for the man he eventually took hostage.
Harper says Thaxton has been calm and cooperative but hasn't made any demands.
Police evacuated the building, Three Gateway Center, and surrounded it along with county, state and federal agents.
No injuries have been reported.
